After learning there was a classic upscale steakhouse open since 1956 near where we were staying, we were excited to visit. Unfortunately we left pretty disappointed. Started with a beer served in the can, waitress returned with a chilled glass and poured. No big deal, just interesting. I'd never seen a beer can in an upscale steakhouse before. Wife complemented her lemon martini. Oyster rockefeller, served in a dish instead of in the shell. A couple were a little gritty, a little much raw onion for my taste and served with tiny cocktail forks that made it a bit of a challenge to eat. House salad was small; the Roquefort dressing I asked for on the side was excellent. Ordered the George special ribeye as it looked to be their signature steak. No hint of the wood grill flavor I'd been really looking forward to. It was a tough cut, and the flavor a bit off, perhaps they season with lemon? Or maybe the cut was a bit past its prime? Anyway, the steak fries it came with were a real highlight of the meal. Wife, wanting a lighter meal, ordered the lobster tail. Her side, badly overcooked and burnt brussel sprouts, was bad. Replaced with steamed mixed vegetables which she liked a lot more. It's a pleasant place in an unexpected location, and service was very friendly and helpful. I want to send love to a locally owned spot like George's, but it's not a place we'd return to. When we want a great steak in a wonderful atmosphere, at about the same price, in the area, sorry guys, but we'll be at the 360 grille. read more

Owner is a jerk. Drove over an hour to eat there arriving 45min before they closed only for the owner huff and puff and tell me how expensive it was to keep his wood fire burning. I thought wood was cheap? Cheaper than my gas to get there I bet. He was a dick about it and raised his voice. read more

The servers were attentive. We had a private room. The cheesecake was the best. The other food items were bland and very poorly seasoned and cooked. It is outrageous that the food is priced way above what it should be based on quality and appearance. George's, look around at other local restaurants for hints on how you can do better. For approximately $100 per person George's is WAY off the game. We will never return. read more

George's is a must try if you are in the Shoals. We went there for dinner and it was great. We were seated quickly and had a nice corner table. I had the grilled shrimp with a baked potato and a salad. My husband had the NY strip with a baked potato and salad. The food is a little bit pricey, but in my opinion, it's worth it. The quality of food and service was top notch. We made reservations and we were glad we did. We got there pretty early about 5:15 PM and it worked perfect for us. The service and ambiance were good. However, the food was only average and very overpriced. We got the oysters Rockefeller for our appetizer, and it was not very good. The signature ribeye was tough and not what you would expect for a $65 steak. All steaks are listed as market price, which seems a little unusual. My wife got the French onion soup which was not good. I got the seafood bisque for an upcharge (they didn't say what the up-charge was, but later found out it was $15) It was good, but I would not have gotten it if I had known the up-charge. For the cost of the meal, you're better off going to the 360 Grille or Odette. read more

My wife said it was absolutely adorable. When we pulled up, she thought it was a barbecue joint. Steaks were delicious, right off the open pit, we enjoyed a beautiful French Bordeaux and the steaks were scrumptious. Also had a little fried shrimp. read more

I've never left a restaurant and felt more ripped off. My $54 steak came with an iceberg lettuce salad absolutely drenched in a soupy blue cheese dressing and a wimpy baked potato. The taste of the steak was very average and my wife had to send her med-rare steak back because it was absolutely frigid in the middle. We like a good mid rare steak but it was almost frozen in the middle. The bar area will melt your eyeballs with the 2 giant TV screens that surround you. Don't look up at the filthy beat up ceiling - eek! And don't look too closely at those weird carts they roll your food out on. My beer in the can I ordered was green (gone bad). Our food took FOREVER to come out. We really expected more from this place especially given that we had a party of 6 (including two kids who just ate chicken tenders) and our bill was $350!!!! read more

Dined alone at the bar but never felt that way. Scott and his wife made me feel very welcome and the service was great. Scott recommended his favorite, Prime Rib blackened and seared with a baked potato. Had the house made Roka blue cheese dressing on my house salad. The meal did not disappoint, cooked perfectly, tender and tasty. Fun atmosphere in the bar area made the experience complete. Could see the expert chef grilling on the wood fired grill from my seat. Went here for mine and my girlfriends anniversary and had a fantastic experience. The first thing you notice about George's is the atmosphere. The restaurant itself is very nice and well put together and is able to feel welcoming while also upscale. The salad was fine but they were gonna charge me extra for cucumber which doesn't make much sense. Other than this though it was a good salad The double delight was in fact a double delight. I ordered the steak medium and it was cooked to perfection. The steak was incredibly juicy and was also seasoned very well. The shrimp were huge and were crisp but not too oily. This is some of the best fried shrimp that I have had period. The potato as well was very good. All in all I would definitely return. It is a bit pricey but you don't feel like you are overpaying. read more

I live in iowa and we have one of the best steak houses in the country near us so I have a preconceived notion on what constitutes the "Best steak ever". When we arrived and were seated I ordered the ribeye. I mean if you are going to test how good a steak place is, a ribeye is what you go for. Steak came out, and was perfectly cooked. As for it being the best steak ever. Not really close. Again, my baseline is high due to the part of the country I live in. The steak was better than average but not the best. What made this place exceptional really want the food, it was the atmosphere and service. I am on my way home from a trip to Augusta, GA (The Masters) and a visit to some of the golf courses on the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail. We drove in from Augusta today and were interested in a good steakhouse after a long day of driving. We hit the jackpot with George's as this restaurant is an upscale, but very down home establishment. Our waiter, Brent, was very knowledgeable and made recommendations that were spot on. We met the current owner, Scott, who personally came by our table to see how we liked our meal. The food was absolutely outstanding and the wait staff superb. I am already planning on a repeat visit next April when we venture out from OKC to Augusta for next year's masters. At first I want to say that the food is superb. My chicken breast and filet mignon was extremely tender and well seasoned. BEWARE- the grilled shrimp is cooked on the same grill as the filet mignon ! Hence cross contamination! I am allergic to shellfish and after only 3 bites of my filet mignon I broke out in a severe rash with itching. When asked if their shellfish and filet mignon are cooked together I was told yes. It was our 32nd wedding anniversary and I was looking for a nice place to eat (we are not local but here for work). We had a fantastic experience at Georges! We were in the Shoals visiting our sons at UNA and had the opportunity to get out of downtown Florence for dinner. I had seen great reviews and decided we would make a special trip to George's Steak Pit. It was about 8:00 on a Thursday night, so honestly we were worried about the experience. From the name, I really was expecting a simple steakhouse, but was sssssoooo wrong in my assumption! We received the best welcome from the owners, assuring us that our two college kids were dressed appropriately, we were worried due to the dress code posted (which we were in FULL SUPPORT OF!). How great to eat somewhere with standards like that, it only makes me look forward to my dining experience. And that experience was awesome. Steaks and sides were so good, but the desserts really took the cake! Crème brûlée and cheesecakes were amazing! Thank you for such a great meal! My husband decided to surprise me last night and take me to a place I had never been, and didn't tell me where until we were on our way. If his surprises are going to be like this, he needs to continue surprising me! Outstanding! George's Steak Pit, a Sheffield landmark for 69 years, somehow unknown to me until now, but now on our list for future date nights, for sure. They are known for their steaks so that's what we went with but I added seared ahi tuna because I'm a seafood kinda gal. The steak, seared and cooked perfectly medium rare for both of us, was smoky and tender and so flavorful. The best steak we've had in a long time! The ahi tuna was good. The deep fried Brussels sprouts were SO delicious, but a little overdone and a bit too greasy. The flavor was on point though! Alternatively, the steak fries were a bit underdone, but still good. Our house salad and Greek salad were both really good. They make all their dressings, and that is evident. The taste is unlike what you're gonna get in a pre-made dressing. We started with the crab claws and they did not disappoint! We also shared a French onion soup and it was very good. We ordered a piece of cheesecake with caramel and chocolate sauce to go and devoured it when we got home. The ambience, friendly staff, and amazing food made for a fantastic experience that we would love to have again very soon. (For honesty purposes: given the aforementioned things, and the price, the plating could have been better on some of the dishes). Verdict: get yourself to George's! Like maybe oil mixed in with it ? Idk ? Ordered medium ribeye, was brought a steak almost raw. Reluctantly sent it back and explained the reason. Waitress was nice and took it back to be on the grill longer. Brought back and darker on outside by very rare inside. Was able to eat 4 bites. Waitress agreed it wasn't close to medium, manager offered a free desert, was charged full price for 4 bites.
