Not sure what has happened to George's restaurant since our last visit. We have happily dined at this restaurant for nearly 40 years. Over the last 2 years (up until last August) I had been gifted several gift cards. The last time I used one was last August. This evening we came into town and decided to have a special dinner at George's restaurant and planned on using our last gift cards. I included the cards and my cc with the bill. The owner (new???) or person running the show came out to tell me the gift cards had expired and actually were no longer accepted by the new ownership. Additionally, when reviewing the bill I noticed that they are now charging for using a credit card. I can't recall the last time I went for dinner at a restaurant and did not use a cc. Charging patrons for using a cc for a high priced meal is about as low as it gets in my book. This is definitely not the George's Restaurant a have frequented over the last 40 years. George's was recommended by our boss and it DID NOT disappoint. We don't go out to have a steak dinner bc we are sooooo picky about our steaks and me and my hubby both agree that I can cook a better steak at home than what we can get at any restaurant. George's Steak Pit is an exception to this rule of ours. We both ordered the 23 Oz. Bone-in Ribeye and it was cooked to perfection and was absolutely the best steak either of us have EVER eaten. We had the Ahi Tuna appetizer, suggested by our bartender/waitress, and it was exceptional as well. We reserved our seats at the bar last minute (about 3pm for 6:30 pm) and they were the only open seats when we got there. We were seated immediately and had excellent service from our bartender, Molly. She was EXTREMELY busy but NOT ONE TIME did she waiver in making sure we had everything we needed and making sure we were taken care of. Our meal was pricey for 2 people but it was absolutely worth every penny. It was our first time here but we will definitely be back to sit at the bar and ask for Molly. We are in town celebrating the upcoming nuptials of dear friends, and we wanted to take them out for a special meal the night before their wedding. I was very disappointed. For the amount of money they charge I expected much better. We arrived at 6:30 and were not greeted at the hostess stand. Not a problem but it did give me the opportunity to notice the fast food large soda cups decorating the area. Trashy. We were taken into the first dining room, but it took a few minutes because there was a giant table of at least 20 people including young children celebrating a birthday and taking pictures, blocking the path to our table. Not exactly the atmosphere for a classy dinner. I asked that we be moved to another table, and was told the other party would be leaving soon. I insisted and a few minutes later we were taken to another dining room. The food: I've had better at Texas Roadhouse. The salad was mediocre at best, the lettuce was actually slightly wilted. The prime rib was cooked medium rare as requested but was lukewarm. Au jus was bland and the horseradish sauce tasted like they added sugar. The steamed broccoli was mushy. I was surprised to see that the bread basked was filled with buttered toast. I would not call it Texas toast as it was not thick enough but I guess that is what they were going for. The service: I had to ask for my water to be refilled several times. The staff scurried from table to table, they were doing their best but it did make us feel rushed. We received our food in a timely manner, no complaints there. This is a white tablecloth establishment with prices in line with fine dining. Unfortunately there was nothing fine about the food we were served. I felt ripped off and will never go back. Two nights earlier we went to Does Eat Place in Russellville, AL. The entire experience was far superior to George's for less money. Try them instead of George's if you want a good steak. Bottom line, this might have been considered a top of the line restaurant years ago, but I would not put it in that category now. Sry disappointed. read more

Not worth it. I don't mind spending $100 on a fine meal. I've spent more than that in the past. Thing is, for the price I expect much much more. George's has the single worst filet mignon I've ever eaten. It's as if the chef was trained at the Western Sizzlin steak house. The grill is obviously too hot and I suspect the "chef" flipped the fillet mignon like a hamburger and squashed it flat with a spatula. Good Lord man, learn how to cook a steak. On the other hand, my wife had a wonderful time... Not having to cook or clean up after our meal. That alone may have made the price of the meal worth it. read more

I had the ribeye special with the baked potato and French onion soup sides. Everything was so delicious. The cheese on the soup was perfectly melted and yummy. The potato was fluffy and hot and buttery. And the steak was the star, cooked perfectly with an excellent rub. Had the creek brûlée for dessert and it was torched tableside. I recently ordered the "tenderloin" kabobs which was priced at $31.95 on the menu, but billed at $34.95. (Welcome to JBiden's 2022, I suppose) The couple of onion wedges, 1 piece of bell pepper and 1 small piece of tomato were fine. The baked potato and toasted bread were very good. The salad was fresh and crispy. The "atmosphere" and our waiter were great, as in the past. On the other hand, the "tenderloin" pieces were completely flavorless and tougher than a cheap sirloin that hasn't been tenderized. I literally had trouble chewing it and even digesting it. I paid close to a third of what I'd pay for a whole tenderloin at Sam's Club and the filets I cook on my Big Green Egg would put the "tenderloin" I had the other night totally to shame. I understand that ownership of George's may have changed recently. I have always had great dining experiences there in the past, although I am not a regular there. If my experience is not an anomaly, and I certainly hope it was, the new management will need to make some serious changes soon or their bottom line will certainly suffer. I am pretty sure this place is meant for locals, because the way they place there sign, there is no way for an out of towner to find this place unless they have the address and a GPS. I walked in just after 5, and no staff were around. I wasn't even sure they where open. I wandered around, called into the back room where several staff were working...no response. Finally, the barkeeper found me, and bade me a set at the bar. No beer on tap, so I ordered a house red. About 5:30, local started coming in. Staff really knew the local folks; I think I was the only non-regular. Seeing as this is a steak place, I ordered the 10 oz Prime Rib with steamed broccoli and French Onion Soup. The prime rib was available in a smaller cut, which is why I ordered it. I love steak, but need to cut back so am normally look for a 6 or 8 oz cut. Anyway, I ordered rare, but the barkeeper came back after checking and said the best they could do was medium rare; which is fine, at least they asked rather than try and pass off medium rare as rare. I love french onion soup, and theirs was very good; could have stood some more toasting on the cheese but for a restaurant it was excellent. The prime rib was okay, have had much better, but have had much worse. Broccoli was pretty good as well. So, there are not a lot of steak houses in Alabama, so this is probably 4.5 stars for the state. Compared with the steak houses in the rest of the country I have visited, I'd give it a 3. read more

We visited George's to celebrate my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. The service was absolutely top notch. From ensuring we had a room with everything we needed, to making sure a glass was never below half full. we were well taken care of! The menu was definitely pricy, but I'd say it was overall worth it. The steak wasn't the best I'd ever had, but it was cooked and seasoned perfectly and paired with a great chicken breast. Since it's December, George's was decorated for Christmas so beautifully. It would be so romantic for a couple's date night! Overall a great experience, we will return again for a special occasion. I have always maintained that this is the best steak period. Frank who represents his father's creation of fifty plus years, runs a tight ship and insists on excellence. He has managed to retain his professional grill masters (for real, any other title would be inadequate)hostess and bartender for many years now. The secret to the flavor is the hickory, George's meats have always been cooked over hickory. Oh yeah, the fact that the meats are dry-aged also has something to do with it, the rib-eye is my personal favorite, but the filet is incredible too. The wine list is not that extensive but I challenge you to find better matched wines to their menu offerings. The front staff are always helpful, pleasant and efficient. I rarely have room for deserts but the last time I had the cheese cake and a George's coffee, it was the perfect end to a perfect meal. Another thing I like about George's is that almost every time I eat there Frank (the owner) drops by to personally inquire about the quality of our dining experience. Really good steaks are getting harder and to find, so I highly encourage you to go experience for yourself what a fifty year old business model looks like today. George would be proud. read more

Sadly, my first experience with George's was less than a week after having oral surgery. I considered not attending a big group dinner since I wouldn't be able to chew steak very well. Thank heavens I didn't!!! I got the seared tuna and it was unbelievable! Cooked to a perfect medium-rare. Seasoned beautifully. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Everyone in our party raved about all of their dishes. The service was impeccable, except for a brief annoyance with the bartender who seemed to want to serve all the men first before acknowledging a couple ladies who don't need our significant others to order for us.
