I was looking for somewhere new to try in the area and came across this place on Yelp. You can definitely tell it's a spot for locals - so much Mason gear and rapport between the staff and customers. They even had newspapers for you to read at your table. It's in a shopping center where there is plenty of parking. Inside was clean and spacious. We recently went to George's Steak & Things after seeing it listed as one of the top cheesesteak spots in the area. Since it was one we hadn't tried yet, we happily made the 30-minute drive. We ordered the steak and cheese sub, Cajun chicken sub, and the meatball sub. The shop is located near George Mason University and is clearly well loved. The space was clean, welcoming, and the staff was very nice--which honestly made me really want to love the food. That said, it just wasn't what I was expecting. Everything leaned a bit dry and bland for my taste. However, I will say that after reheating it the next day, it actually tasted better, which makes me think the real test is eating it fresh and hot in-house. If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I absolutely would. I am visiting from North Carolina with my parents and needed a quick meal before an event. I placed my order by phone at 5:14 PM (I have screenshots showing the exact time). When I had trouble finding the restaurant, I called again at 5:53 PM for directions while I was in the shopping center, which I will also attach. When I arrived, the owner greeted me by saying, "We've been waiting for you. We had to heat your food up again." I was immediately confused. Reheating a customer's food instead of preparing it fresh is not something I would expect from any restaurant. To make matters worse, when I politely asked for ketchup, ranch, and cups of ice, the manager responded, "Oh, you're asking for all this and no tip?" That comment was incredibly unprofessional and inappropriate. Tips are earned through good service, not demanded or used to shame customers. Once I returned to the hotel and opened the food, the quality was extremely disappointing. The bread was stale and dry, the fries were overcooked and tasted like they had been sitting out for a long time, and the entire meal looked and tasted as though it had been reheated multiple times rather than freshly prepared. I called the restaurant to express my concerns, hoping the owner would at least acknowledge the issue or offer a solution. Instead, he insisted that I arrived "an hour late" to pick up my order, despite my call history showing otherwise. He then said, "I'm sorry, sweetheart, I'm busy," and hung up on me before I could even finish speaking. The poor food quality was disappointing, but the owners attitude and complete lack of customer service were even worse. Rather than listening, apologizing, or attempting to make things right, he dismissed my concerns, spoke to me condescendingly, and ended the conversation by hanging up on me. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience deserved one. Between the stale, reheated food, the rude comments about tipping, and the disrespectful treatment from the owner, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. Brightly lit dining area with booths and high-top seating. Great combo price on cheesesteak w/ fries. Add your soda and it's still not bad. Had to compliment the owner on his old school music which made my dine-in at this spot with a "neighborhood gem" vibe enjoyable. Sub came with a decent amount of well-seasoned steak (unlike a lot of places!) on a toasted bun with no up-charge for mushrooms. I've first visited George's back in my college days, a over decade ago. The owners back then were extremely friendly, and it's where I first tried baklava. Fast forward to today and they still uphold in customer service. I love cheesesteaks and have had it many places so I was excited to try this place. Boy was it underwhelming for me. The portion size was a tad lousy. I'm more used to my cheesesteaks being filled to the brim with meat if I'm forking over $10-12 dollars. Maybe if I was a Fairfax Station local and have not tried many places, I'd rate this one higher, but unfortunately, I've tried them all. What can I say but the Cajun sub is addictive? Am waiting to say "I'm Rick James, and the Cajun Sub is a helluva drug." All jokes aside, this and their steak and cheese subs are ridiculously delicious. All of the food items I've gotten here are well portioned, and I doubt you'll walk out hungry. Okay maybe my teenager, who will eat the left side of the menu. Seriously in this era of food and everything else inflation, props to this place. Friendly people are here. It's nice going to a restaurant, where the employees are genuinely having fun. Food is important, make no mistake about that, but a pleasant environment makes a difference.
