I love this place! And they have a healthy business. When I went last week, I noted 7 employees. I took a coat with a broken zipper to see if they could fix it. They examined it and figured out what it would take to fix -- best case, match and add a zipper pull. Worse case, replace the entire zipper. Five days later, I have my coat back with the best case scenario. It zips, and it was an inexpensive fix. Friendly service, and I will definitely go back to George's for future clothing fixes that I need. read more

George's is located in Gayton Crossing Shopping center, which I think is a great place. Nice variety of shops and restaurants. George has been there for years and over the years I have taken many clothing items in for alterations and zipper replacement. I have yet to be disappointed. Recently, all at one time, I took in eight pair of pants. George had me try on each pair and mark them individually rather than just measure my waist and in seam and figuring all the pants are cut they same. I received genuine individual attention with a custom alteration based not just on my body but on the cut of each pair of pants! This is a very busy tailor shop and yet George had all eight pair of pants ready for me in a week. He also stands by his work, if you get home and something is not right just bring it back and he'll make it good. Being a tailor is a skill, it is an art form. You need to understand body shapes, cloth types and how alterations differ for men's and women's clothes. One thing that concerns me is that when I go to George's I don't see any future tailors there. Hey next generation, there are crafts and skills that you can learn and make a good living with. Skills and customer service like you find at George's can certainly be beneficial to have. You would be one of a few people carrying on this legacy. When you need something altered fast, George's is the place to go. You walk in with the garment you need tailored, change into it in the small dressing room and then George will pin it to your specifications. I've taken items here for hems or other easy alterations and gotten them back in about 2 days. Awesome! George has a team of cute old ladies who help him get projects finished quickly. Along with simple hems and taking things in, I've had him do a few more complicated alterations. I bought one dress off the internet and the sleeves were too long, the dress was cut too low under the arms and in the front, and it was a bit too long. I loved the fabric, though, so I took it to George. He shortened the dress and used the fabric he removed to fill in the areas under the arms and in the front. For projects like this, you have to know exactly what you want, but if you tell him he'll make it happen. read more

Similar to my dry cleaning experience, I searched far and wide for a great alterations place in the River City. After having a few misses (though none as bad my dry cleaning fiascos), I finally found George's on the recommendation of a friend. Immediately upon picking up that first alteration, I knew I had found my go-to tailor in Richmond. I've taken multiple bridesmaid dresses to George- some of which needed much more structural work than others. I once needed a hem shortened on a dress with 4 layers. 4 layers! That was not cheap, let me tell ya (it also required additional alterations, so truth be told I don't know exactly what the multi-layer hem would have cost on its own). But George (and his sewing geniuses) did it and he/they did it well. My bf also had a suit altered here - we were in need of a quick turnaround and George provided just that. As Megan said, you walk in and change into your garment in one of the dressing rooms on the right. Then you stand up on one of the pedestals facing the mirrors so George can examine the garment while you tell him what you're looking to change. If you're ever less than 100% satisfied with the outcome, let George know and he will fix it! All of my alterations have been close to flawless, but the sizing should be just right. After all, a perfect fit is what you're paying for with alterations, isn't it? Word to the wise: George's doesn't accept credit cards so be prepared with cash or a checkbook when you're picking up your altered garments! read more

Over the last year, I've had about 6-8 shirts, 2 suits taken in at George's. I've been happy with the results each time. -He's fast. He usually has it ready in a few days. -His prices are reasonable. That's why I had so much tailoring done ($300-400). Bring cash. -He works hard to make sure that you're happy with it. For the shirts, he would take them in once on the side, I would try it on, and he would measure again to add darts. I have a high bar for letting people alter my suits and I felt that I could trust him with them. He showed that he deserved that trust. read more

Went here to get three shirts altered. They did a great job but they were supposed to call me when the job was done. I never received a call, called them instead, spoke to someone who took my name down,and then had to call me back to let me know the order was done. We have always heard good things about George's. I work in retail and have often sent customers to him for alterations. We took my daughter's prom dress to him , when we picked it up he told me the material doesn't steam out. I steamed it out just fine. We had jewelry and shoes specifically for this dress, color and style. When my daughter put it in it had never been gemmed. It was 4:45 the nights of prom. Paid $68 cash and had nothing to show for it. I called Monday to talk to him and he told me "that's impossible". I returned to his shop to show him it was indeed the case. The seamstress said she did the other alterations but didn't know it needed to be hemmed. It was on the card and there were chalk lines on the dress and the lining. First and last time I will ever use them! read more

I read the reviews and one of my friends recommended George's. I took my skirt to have the broken zipper replaced. They delivered on time but the repairs were disappointing. I did not look at it when I picked it up and when I got home was disappointed with the work. i took the skirt back to have it redone as it was not professionally done. and was disappointed with the lack of concern and they refused to redo. the alternation was not done professionally-would not return. After reading the review that George works hard to make you happy i can truly say that this was not my experience at all. Would not go back or recommend him! read more

This review is a month overdue, but it had to write it. I needed a sequin dress altered for a formal event. The dress fit everywhere expect in the waist. I took it to George's a week before the event for alteration. When I picked up the dress Saturday morning it was was not as fitted as I wanted. I expressed my concern to George. It was a busy Saturday morning and his staff was not there. However, George saw my anxiety and within 2 hours he had remedied it! I was ecstatic!!! The dress fit perfectly! Brought in a very expensive blazer that had a micro-tear along the edge of the front below the first button. George sewed it together right there like a surgeon, and in front of me, and refused to take any money. Needless to say I returned with more suits and blazers to have them altered. Needed some alterations....checked Yelp so came here...dropped off a Boy Scout uniform to have numbers sewn on. $18 to so on the patches...so a bit more than I expected...got the uniform back and the numbers were crooked...ask them to do it again, and the woman proceeded to argue with me...George stepped in and did fix it...but too much for mediocre work. read more

I've taken my alterations to George ever since his business was connected to Jos. A. Banks (it must be 25-30 years ago). Neither I nor my three adult daughters ever go in to George's that we're not called by our first names. His alterations are excellent, reasonably priced, and done quickly.
