if there was an option to leave a zero for a review, that is what I would do! I took my daughter's prom dress in today to have alterations done. It was just too long, they wanted to charge me $300 to alter her dress. When I advised the owner that I needed to take her dress somewhere else that I could not afford to spend $300 just to have the length on her dress fixed he would not give me the dress back until he had removed his marking for the alterations and then when he was done with that, he balled my daughter's prom dress up in a knot and threw it at me. I will never go back there again. I would never recommend them to anybody. It was the worst customer service I've ever experienced! read more

Went here on a recommendation to have a uniform dress altered. Was charged $35 and he did an awesome job. It was ready super fast and a great value. Then I got a second dress and took this one in as well. Although he did an equally good job, this time I was charged $65. I asked why it was almost double the price for literally the exact same thing and wasn't given an answer. Now I have a third dress and a skirt and I'd like to take them in but the price is a little bit much for me. My employer doesn't reimburse for this so I'm hesitant to pay that amount again. read more

If it was possible to leave no stars then that is what I would leave! I tried to use their services this morning to simply have them stitch close a small straight line on 2 pillows, just to keep the stuffing from coming out. I didn't need them to be pretty, just sealed. They wanted to charge me $20, the pillows probably weren't $20 in cost! I asked for 1 pillow back due to the high cost and the woman grabbed both, basically threw them at me and shooed me out the door! I was stunned! I have never been treated so rudely. I went here for the first time when I was on my Family Medicine rotation in Mechanicsville, coming here during my lunch break to get my dress shirt fixed (a button fell off). Since then, I have been back three times, each time with phenomenal service. The middle-aged Korean couple that runs this shop are super sweet. They are extremely polite and very friendly despite limited English fluency. Their prices are very reasonable, and often, they can provide same-day service. I saw so many other patrons come here with random problems/requests, and the people at #1 Tailor were able to fix them all. On my most recent visit, I came in for a yet another simple shirt button fix, and the owner chatted with me. He was flattered that I drove all the way from Shockoe Bottom to his store, but I told him it's because they do such excellent work! He said he would press my shirt for me in return for "full service." In the end, he didn't even charge me for the shirt! What a sweet man! Every customer walks out of this store with a smile. I had 3 dresses that needed to have the hem adjusted and one that also needed to have some sleeve adjustments as well. I walked in and was immediately serviced. The owner showed me to the dressing area and proceeded to take measurements when I came out in each dress. The quality of the alterations was excellent and the turnaround time was excellent. I was recommended this tailor by a friend. I had just gotten a new suit for weddings/interviews - but it was tight around the thigh/crotch. I had already taken the pants to another tailor who did not think there was enough material to widen them. The company couldn't switch out the pants for a larger size, so I took it here because I really wanted to keep the suit/especially the jacket. I work at VCU hospital and pretty much came right before closing on a Monday - he fitted me, marked the pant and jacket and offered to have it done for the next evening. I was on call Tues and came back Wed evening, again right before closing, it fits great and wore it for my first zoom wedding. It was $56 to sew buttons on the jacket, hem the pants, loosen the waist/groin. Great turn around time, great service, would definitely be back if I have more tailoring needs. He was wearing a mask the whole time, one changing room to try on quickly, so if there are a bunch of people you may have to wait, although everything moved really quickly and I never had to wait. read more

This is how I was treated at #1 Tailor My son had to have patches sewn on the pockets of his JROTC camouflage uniform. We took it to this establishment by RECOMMENDATION. When we picked it up the patches had been sewn through the pockets so that they were sewn shut. One patch was crooked. I took it back because it seemed like an obvious mistake. The owner wanted to charge me to re do because he says I was suppose to tell him not to sew the pocket shut... I rejected having to pay for this mistake and he decided not to budge. I demanded he fix the crooked patch and advised I was not paying for that. I honestly thought this would be an opportunity to make things right and hoped when we picked it back up it would just be sewn correctly on both sides. Well, not only did that not happen, the owner doubled down to sew the pocket shut again on the corrected patch. I guess some businesses don't need the business... Took it to En Route Cleaners in Rutland (should have gone there first they give the school uniforms a discount!!) They agreed it should not be sewn that way. So it cost me $50 to have 4 patches sewn on a uniform. Just a warning because this felt REAL PETTY!!! read more

I caution anyone to consider this business. I took a pair of pants in to be taken in. I paid. When i tried them on what we discussed had not been done. I returned and explained the issue. I returned to pick them up and was charged the same amount a second time. I advised that I previous paid. The woman screamed at me "no pay no pay". I have been going to this Tailor since we moved into the area four years ago. Although the tailor and the woman who works there with him are very polite and turn the work around quickly, the past few times that I have gone, I have not been pleased at all. I brought a dress to be hemmed and he charged me $20 which seemed like a fair and normal price. I bought the same dress in a different color. I brought it to him and this time he wanted $40. When I questioned him about it, and reminded him that I had just been there with the same dress in a different color, he reduced the price to $20. I never thought that I would have to question a price at a local business. There is no price menu posted in his store. The final straw for me was when I brought my daughter's prom dress to him this week. It is a very simple dress without a lining. It just needed to be shortened 1 1/2 inches. He quoted me a price of $60. This seemed a little steep considering that this dress doesn't have any pleats, complicated fabric, or an abundance of fabric. But, it is a prom dress, so I figured this is what they are charging for hems for prom dresses. When my daughter picked the dress up and brought it home, I opened it up to look at it and I was shocked. All he did was cut off the bottom with a pair of scissors. The fabric wasn't hemmed, it wasn't stitched in anyway, it wasn't surged, it wasn't even steamed. The cut with the scissors was a rough cut with a raggedy edge. I brought the dress right back to him and he tried to tell me that that is how they shorten that type of dress. I told him that for $60 that was ridiculous and reminded him that he told me that he was going to hem it before I left it there with him. He wanted more money to hem it, and I said no. $60 to cut off the bottom inch and a half of a dress is a ridiculous amount of money to charge someone without hemming it. He did take the dress back, he steamed it, and he hemmed it properly. However, if I hadn't opened up the plastic to look at the dress when my daughter brought it home, we would've had a dress with a raggedy cut bottom for her to wear to the prom and we would have paid $60 for that raggedy cut bottom. I don't write these reviews very often. I hate to write a poor review for a business, especially a local business. If I post a review on yelp it is because I really enjoyed my experience at a business or I was very concerned about other people having terrible experience like I did. Between the arbitrary pricing for service, their policy of only taking cash or checks, and my last experience of shabby work, I have to say I think this business is a little sketchy. I am not comfortable with having to haggle for prices and would prefer to go to a tailor that has a price menu posted. This business is the only tailor in the area, but I will travel down to Staples Mill Road to go to K&K next time. Be careful, people! I've been in Hanover for 15 years and this has always been my go-to tailor....until today. I have had my husband's shirts done, my son's suits, my daughters HC dresses and the list keeps going on. They have always been super quick and super priced. This time, I took two dresses for my daughters proms. I thought easy peasy, hemmed both and fixed the slit on both, nothing fancy. We left with our ticket without me checking the price, my mistake completely. I got home and the price on the ticket was $380.00. I thought it was a mistake or he wrote it wrong, so I planned on talking with them when we picked the dresses up. Today, while my daughter was trying the dresses on, I inquired about the price and the seamstress said it was correct. I told her that that price was outrageous and could she take some off. She did not and I told her I would pay it but I would not be back. She responded with "that's ok". To gauge prices during prom season is a horrible way to run a family owned business. That is exactly what they are doing. I'm no seamstress, but for the alterations to cost more than the dress just doesn't seem right to me. I don't normally leave reviews but this experience was NOT pleasant and it saddens me as I thought these were good, honest business owners. Very disappointing. I took my winter coat here to have the zipper replaced, when i called he wouldn't give me a price over the phone, said needed to see the coat. Took coat, he barely even looked at it and quoted me $40! I repeated his quote in astonishment and he just said "yes, $40". I'd driven out of my way, so I left coat with him to fix. I came back 2 days later, he gets my coat and says $40..I ask if he replaced the zippers on the pockets too, and thats why it costs so much? he refused to answer me, he just says "service charge" and points to sign about only paying with cash or check. I went to ATM and came back, he acts as if Im going to give him the cash without him getting my coat, then acts like he cant find it even when I point to it and give him my name, he thrusts my coat at me and commands me to sign bottom of customer copy of the receipt, takes it from me after signing and doesn't give me a receipt. Doesn't say thank you or anything... He's rude and a rip- off, don't go here!!! read more

I've gone here a few times now and just wanted to commend Mr. Yung for his great work :) I always thought that pants would never fit me but going to him has fixed that! I also had an overcoat that I bought on Black Friday. The sleeves went about two inches pass my knuckles and there was a lot of space in the chest--the only part that fit was the shoulders. I thought it would always look really weird to wear in public but I brought the jacket here and everything was fixed in a day. My office moved further away but I still make the 25 minute drive here because I trust this place with my clothes. read more
