I went there on a Wednesday to get an oil change after I talked to the operator on the phone to schedule an oil change she told me that they don't schedule oil change. So when I get there at 5:00pm the service was closed and I went into to sales part and a couple of staffers told me that the service closed at 5 I even showed them the hour they have posted on their website. This is the worst dealership I've ever had the misfortune of going to. I cannot overstate how useless and inept the staff are. My fiancé (who is a doctor) took her new vehicle in to get a flat tire replaced. One of the service reps, who was a complete moron - and I'm not sure he could read Green Eggs and Ham if you paid him - assumed she didn't know what she was talking about because she was a woman. She explained that the tires were covered by warranty (they are), and he insisted they were not, and refused to read the lease paperwork. After he continued to be a complete mouth-breathing idiot, and my fiancé told him for the third time just to read the paperwork and quit acting like an imbecile, he did, and found that the tires were covered by warranty. He then claimed he contacted "the warranty people" and spoke to us like a drunken toddler, and that he never heard back from them, so he charged us for the tire replacement. I don't believe he ever contacted them, and probably never intended to. He was rude, lazy, and a misogynistic oaf. Thankfully the dealership where we originally leased the vehicle from actually cares about customers and reimbursed us when we explained this situation. Sadly, like many businesses in Ames, these baboons do not build a customer base due to good performance. They bank on you having no other options due it being a college town, and they will do the bare minimum at *best*. Do not come here. It may be more inconvenient time-wise, but go out of town if you want service that is worth paying for. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I recently had a transmission output shaft seal failure while travelling in the Ames area. I was stuck with no vehicle and no choice but to have a repair done. I had the van towed to George White and although they were clearly booked full for several days out, they worked me in and had the complete repair done in a day. The cost of the repair was very fair, less than I expected. They really bailed me out of my difficulty. The prompt attention eliminated the need to have Ms T drive form St Louis to pick me up or shuttle to DSM to fly home. I know it is fun to bash automotive service facilities when things don't go well, but this experience could not have been better! read more

I had to have a thermostat replaced on my wife's 2015 Tahoe. The job required less than an hour for an untrained mechanic. There was no disassembly to access the thermostat. This Dealer uses a pre planed software program that set their labor hours to do a job. They bill owners based on the horrible (overpriced charges) software. Their software said that to replace the thermostat on the Tahoe would take 4 hours and they charged 4 hours. Total repair was just under 1000.00$ when it should have cost under 250.00$. The Service Manager would not bend based on actual repair time, and even admitted that the labor charge was excess. The owner/ General Manager refused to return my messages. Word of advice, stay away from rip off dealers like this one. Check repair times before having work done, get a written estimate and don not allow extra charges without them getting your approval. This dealer did repairs without giving me a price or I would have refused. How many people are getting ripped off. There is no State Law Regulating such behavior, no Consumer Protection. read more

It's also a travel log and a history of where I've been and my associated life experiences. And if I scrap-booked many of these reviews (e.g. Shutterfly), I think my son and others would get a decent look at interesting parts of my life. George White Chevrolet is where my parents bought me my first car as a college graduation present (University of Iowa - B.S. - Chemical Engineering). It was a new 2-door blue 1978 Chevy Malibu. That car took me to a summer job at Dow Chemical in Midland Michigan, graduate school at Texas A&M (Gig Em Aggies!), my first real job for Rohm and Haas in greater Philadelphia, and finally Houston Texas, where I eventually traded it in and bought a Red VW Scirocco. I didn't always take care of it the way I should of, and the lack of air conditioning was a real challenge in Texas, but I really enjoyed that car! read more

Car dealerships should be a good experience. If you're buying a new or used vehicle, purchasing parts or getting repair/warranty work done, it should be a good experience. After my last visit to the dealership for repairs I won't go back. I have an older vehicle ('04 Impala) and being 15 years old, it needs repair work done semi-frequently. I recently brought it in so they could replace the blower motor. They did their normal work as usual, charged me the amount they told me they'd charge me and I left satisfied. One day later the blower stopped working again. I took it back in to have them look at it and they told me they'd only do it if I paid their insane "diagnostic" fee. I didn't need anything diagnosed. I knew what was wrong and so did they, yet they wanted to charge me another cost on top of it. Unhappy with the service I spoke with the department manager and they agreed to look at it no charge since they messed it up. It turns out the tech installed it wrong. I told them I wasn't happy with their service and they didn't seem to care too much. I was still treated as if I did something wrong when they messed up. If I ever need another repair or warranty work done I'm driving to Boone and letting Pat Clemons do the work. I'm guessing they at least respect their customers. No more George White for me. read more

Being a parent several hundred miles away from your inexperienced college kid with car troubles, the call "the car broke down" isn't good. Had it towed to Geo White and Randy in the shop was responsive and patient in explaining the upcoming procedures. Of course we aren't happy with a bill, but it is what it is and we will continue to trust the repair shop. read more

George White was fine - This is honestly the first car I personally have assisted in buying, and it wasn't for me. Plus, It's important to mention that my attitude towards car dealers is "I will give you extra money if you just leave me alone and let me make my decision." I was helping Grandma buy a car to replace a 13 year old model, and George White does have a good selection - much larger than the other dealership we looked at in a smaller town. In our case, the winning model, a Pontiac G6, was available in spades. The sales cycle wasn't super high pressure, they allowed us to take the car home overnight to give it a little extended test drive, and didn't seem to be super greasy. We didn't haggle them down for every last penny, but they dealt with us in a reasonable fashion, etc. The specific car we looked at was priced a couple hundred dollars above the blue book, but not outrageously so - within reason, I suppose. I would probably go back to look again if I was in the area. But I'm not, so I personally probably won't be. It does have a decent selection, so if I have to do this sort of thing again, I wouldn't hesitate to stop here. read more

I keep this short without as much detail. My first and hopefully only review. The only reason I'm writing this review is to warm people. I took my truck in for an ac part. They gave a quote and the part which costed 130.00$ by itself. The quote was 950.00$ for them to put in the part. They said they'd have to take apart the dashboard to put in the part ,which is a lie. They were about to charge me 800$ extra for something they wouldn't have had to do. They also charged me extra for the part. It's a stealership at it's best. If you do end up here, do what I did and get a second opinion. read more

Caviler went in for an alignment. Was told they couldn't do the job unless they replaced the bushings. Charged $40 for the 'inspection'. They were told no, do not do the replacement. Car was taken home and the lower control arms were pulled to change the bushings. The bushings were in great shape and no one had removed anything to do an inspection. (all the bolts were still well rusted to the car and a socket had not touched any of them) Put the car back together with new lower control arms (had already purchased them) and took it some where else to have the alignment done. Thanks for trying to rip off my girlfriend for hundreds more than the $40 you raked her over the coals for an 'inspection'. read more

My wife and I were shopping for a larger vehicle to accommodate our growing family. We dealt with Mark Bathe and I should have trusted my gut feeling that he wasnt being truthful. We SPECIFICALLY SAID we wanted something safe and reliable. He said he had his mechanics look at the vehicle and ASSURED us this vehicle was just that. This couldn't be further from the truth as we have had nearly everything go wrong in one year! We currently have NO heat and our 2 year old must ride in this vehicle daily. We have also had to replace a control cluster ($600) tires(600) thermostat/misc (300) still no heat. No one will touch the transmission it is so bad. It is slipping. Oil leaks like crazy. (A quart weekly or more). Unable to turn fan blower up. I'm sure I'm forgetting about something. Regardless, how does he, or anyone that works there sleep at night? I would NOT recommend George White to anyone who is taking is there for service. My 2010 Chevy Equinox (not purchased at George White) Stopped working on my way back to Ames. I got it towed to George White since It was still under warranty. After waiting two weeks to get my car fixed and my entire transmission rebuilt (which I was originally told would only take one week) I went to go on a three hour car ride to find that my transmission was Still not working properly. I immediately took my car back to George White and left it there while I went out of town. I got a call from them telling me that everything was fine on my car, it was driving perfectly for them and I must not know how to drive my AUTOMATIC car. Thankfully, My car made it back to Illinois where I could take it to the dealer I bought it from to find out there was for sure something VERY wrong with the car. After getting it diagnosed again there they found that the transmission that George White Cheverolet "rebuilt" had shards of metal in it. After getting it fixed at the Cheverolet in Illinois it is in perfect working order. I would not waste your time at George White!!!! read more

DON'T come here to FIX your car's problem. They making it worst!! On 09/15/16 I came here to fix the over-heat problem by change the water pump. After a winter, I realized my car was over-heat again so I turn my car to the other auto shop for a check. What they told me is that the installation was not done probably. So I call George White again and they agree to look at it. But this just the beginning of the nightmare, when I take my car into their shop that they told me it was nothing wrong with the car. So I asked them to take a look at the water pump which they refuse to do it and ask me to leave!! The repressive name Bryan said I was "robbery" him. I went back to the shop and give them a second chance to fix the problem and never asking them to refund any money. What I want is fix their mistake!!! They don't even boarder to do the investigation by checking the water pump or simply start my car. This is the worst experience I ever have!! At the end, I have to ask my mechanic friend to take out the water pump at night which was awfully installed. I will never trust them to touch my car ever again. I am also going to file a BBB complaint on this. My advice is DON'T come here!!! If you want to really fix your car!! Find some other dealer! In replied to George white comment: The part that I supplied was GM OEM part and not cheap. The water pump was not defective after take it out from my car and the leaking because the mounting bolt was not tighten when installed. Also the problem so obvious that the you start the engine and will see the leaking coolant but none of you even test it or try to fix the problem. I did not ask for any refund or replacement. My car was in reduce power mode and over-heat for a while. I am so it must have some problem to causes it. What I want to know is what cause the problem and did you make any mistake during installing the water pump. Telling me nothing and denied the mistake was not a solution.You are risking people's life in dangerous. Most importantly, your employee Bryan even called me a "robber" right behind my back. This is totally unacceptable and it is you dishonest your service. read more

Went through for an oil change there were no cars waiting and it appeared bays were open. My oil change took over an hour, and they attempted to upsell for parts I didn't need and services that have already been taken care of. They did what I asked and I will go back but I do feel a bit grumbly about their sales tactics. read more

I have used George White many times for service, and had many problems. I have had to take the car back several times for issues that were not fixed properly the first time. They make mistakes not only in the work but in what they write up about the issues or the service. Unfortunately, I will need to find another place to service my car in the future. read more

I bought a 1998 pathfinder from george white paid almost 5000.00 cash in feb 2011. was told it was a good car. before i got it home the check engine light came on , had to replace the speed sensor 300.00. a week later the truck just died and now it wont start at all. now i find out that iam going to have to pay around 1500 more to get it running again. was sent a letter from paul white that "make sure you are COMPLETELY SATISFIED both before and well after you take delivery of your car." they lied to me now they have my cash they dont want anything to do with making a wrong ,right ........... read more

After having troubles during my initial service, Greg White called me and made sure I would leave a happy customer. He personally took care of making sure my car's issues were fixed and done the right way, giving me a great deal along the way. He didn't have to do that, but was extremely nice of him to make sure a customer didn't leave disappointed. read more

My wife and I bought a used minivan from George White and everything started out fine. They had a good price on it and gave us a fair amount for our trade in. The problems all started later on. The vehicle is fine but it isn't worth all the hassle we've been through. Although everything was done in my wife's name and mine wasn't on any paperwork, all but one of the thank you letters we received was addressed to me. This had my wife more than a little upset. Later while we're filing some of the paperwork we realize the got her birth date wrong. Not really a big deal but still not happy about it. The big thing is today when we get the registration for the van. Instead of having it due in April like we asked they left it in June like our trade in was. This was after the salesman specifically asked us what month we wanted it due. Separately none of these are very serious but taken all together it shows just how little they listen to their customers and pay attention to details. After talking to the sales manager about our concerns his solution was to offer us a couple free oil changes. Not really free when we live 40 miles away. read more
