People of Ames+, rest assured that you have a reliable garage in this place. I have had such…read moreirritating experiences with garages over time. Almost makes me wonder how these people stay so organized, even when they clearly face challenges like being understaffed (which they are rarely, and yet still manage to deliver service at the same pace). I've never asked them to do anything more than an oil change or something very minor like that, but I'm confident that if I asked for more (and wish me luck in not needing it soon!) they'd be able to do it with the same efficiency of anything else. I especially appreciate the way they are able to stay timely with appointments. So many garages don't offer anything like that and seem incapable of even conceptualizing how to do it. Not these guys.

Me and my dad replaced all speakers in the vehicle after I purchased it, I've had them for years and they worked just fine. The speakers are built to support heavy base and high decibels, my speaker would not sound how it does today if I did not take my vehicle to campus garage. Furthermore, a couple years ago I took my vehicle to campus garage because it was leaking oil. They told me my radiator was busted and needed replacing immediately, not true. Antifreeze is green oil is not green. (The misdiagnosis was confirmed incorrect by the dealership). I should've known to not to take my vehicle there again no matter how much time has passed. But, when you're desperate it calls for desperate measures. I do not recommended campus garage.

After my husband had tried, the breaks were VERY soft and we needed to get it to a professional fast. We called around and Magic Muffler quoted us the cheepest price. We took it in and within a couple hours they called to tell me when they got it apart to let me know that one of the calipers had been broken when my husband tried to fix it. They let me know that it would be another $35 on top of the quoted price. They also let us know that the rotors would need replaced soon. I let him know I didn't have the money for that right now and there was no pressure. He explained that the rotors would make it through these new brake pads, but they would wear out faster till the rotors were changed. They called a couple hours later and I picked up my truck. A little more than 24 hours later I felt a vibration in the gas pedal and the whole truck was shaking. I called them the next day and they said bring it on back and we'll check it out. I took it back and told them I that I didn't have another ride that day and was going to have to walk home and back. And one of the workers said someone could give me a ride home. I was so greatful to not have to walk home. They called a couple hours later. And said they checked it all out. Checked their work, retightend the lug nuts, and took it out for a drive. They noticed the emergency break was pushed about halfway down. They gave me peace of mind and accommodated me with everything I asked. I whole hearted recommend these guys to anyone who is looking for a good price and great customer service.

I was out shopping with a friend when my car suddenly started making a really loud noise. I pulled over and realized my muffler was hanging off my car. As an 18-year-old freshman, I completely panicked and had no idea what I was going to do. I found the closest Car-X and got there right as they were closing. One of the workers was just leaving, but he was still really nice and helped me figure out what to do. He told me to leave my car there and come back Tuesday. When I called Tuesday, I was told how much the repair would cost, and unfortunately it was way more than I could afford. I explained that I would have to pick up my car and try somewhere else. He then told me he would at least get the muffler off the ground so I could safely drive it, and that he would do that for free. When I came back to pick up my car, I found out that they had actually fixed the entire thing for me for free. I was honestly shocked. I'm struggling financially right now, so this was such a huge relief and meant more to me than they probably realized. I'm so grateful that they took the time to help me, especially when they didn't have to. It was such a stressful situation, and their kindness made it so much easier. It's really nice to know there are still people willing to help someone who is struggling. Thank you so much to everyone at Car-X who helped me!

I was told to expect my vehicle to be restored within a few hours. Five hours passed, and I called CarX asking about the status of my vehicle. I was told: "Your A/C was fixed and running perfectly, the front alignment is complete, we're working on the rear alignment." I was also told that minimal time was needed to resolve the remaining issues. 3.5 hours had passed, and I contacted CarX again. The mechanic said they needed 30 minutes and that the car would be complete, so I commuted to the shop. I was told the mechanic was having an issue with a rear alignment bolt and given the option to take my vehicle because I had work. At that point, I took my vehicle because if they wanted to fix it, they had 8.5 hours to do so. I was told to bring my car back so the work can be completed. My vehicle will never visit CarX again. Upon receiving my vehicle, I immediately turned on my A/C, it did not work, and my front wheel alignment was still faulty. They did not rotate my tires, they did not complete the rear wheel alignment, and they did not flush the A/C drain unit. My car was the same condition when I dropped it off that morning. It sucks because I was told these things were complete. I do not recommend CarX. I pray the mechanics are truthful with all clients and complete the work they say they will do. It is neither right nor fun to drive 6+ hours with NO A/C during the hottest time of year. I trusted CarX, and I was let down.

Let me preface this by saying that given others' experience, my terrible experience with Wheelock's…read moreseems to be an outlier. Still, it seems wrong not to share what happened. TLDR: I trusted Wheelock's to check a car before I bought it, bought it with their word that it was all good, and now will have to spend more than $1000 to fix obvious problems they missed. On April 12th I test drove a friend's car because I was thinking of buying it. I liked it, but noticed the AC was not working and the check engine light was on. She dropped the car off at Wheelock's to get checked out before I got it, and I had a budget in mind such that if the fixes cost more than that, I wouldn't take the car. We both called them and made sure to list what we wanted to get checked out (she mentioned a couple issues she knew the car had, and I mentioned the stuff you always want to have checked out before buying a car such as the suspension and clutch, plus the AC which was not working). I eventually got a price (~$2000) and told them to go ahead. I then picked up the car on April 23rd, with them telling me it was 100% and all good. Later that day I noticed the AC was still not working and the check engine light was still on. I had some important trips to do in the next few weeks though, so had to drive it like that. This was red flag 1: how can a decent auto shop say the car is 100% without figuring out and fixing the issue with a check engine light? It's literally a light on the panel. I later checked the error code for that and got that I needed to replace a part. So that's $120 off my pocket. Then I tried replacing the AC freon, since that's usually why the AC doesn't cool, and it didn't work. I'm calling them they said - I kid you not - that "the AC was blowing cool air so we thought it was working but it was a cold day". This was the extent to which they had checked a specific part that both the owner and I had mentioned to not be working. This was red flag 2, and a huge one. I was hoping they'd understand this issue and give me a discount with the actual AC fix, so I decided to take the car there for these last few fixes, as opposed to finding a better prepared auto shop. This was my first car in the US, though, and I was unaware that I need to make an appointment with the auto shop before taking a car. So I just took it, and they said it might take a while because I didn't have an appointment. That part is fine, 100% understand. What I don't understand is why they told me on 4 separate occasions that they'd call back with a price "later that day"/"right away", if they clearly weren't ready. Just tell me you'll need a couple more days. This was really frustrating and when I complained they told me to pick up the car and forget it, they would not fix my car. So I wasted a week. It was my fault for giving them the second chance, though - now I know that the issue with my AC is the compressor, so that's $700-900 off my pocket. If they had checked it properly as *two people* explicitly asked them to when they had the car in April, I'd never have bought it. Now I need to materialize $1000+ out of nowhere because of their disrespect for my money. Again, I hope this is an outlier. But I'd recommend you think twice before going here. Any shop that does not check a check engine light and considers checking whether the AC is blowing cold air (ignoring two people's word that it isn't) as properly checking an AC does not seem trustworthy. I'll be down $3000 by the end of this, and who knows which other issues they did not properly check. Very disappointed. Hope they get better in the future.
