I brought my CR-V in for an estimate, understanding there would be an $85 charge only if diagnostic work was required beyond a visual inspection, which was advertised as free. After a visual inspection, your team identified that the noise originated from tire wear and provided an estimate of $1199 plus tax for four new tires and an alignment. Upon declining the service to consider my options, I was billed $100 for diagnostics ($85 + tax). Reviewing the receipt, I discovered an arbitrary "shop fee" had been added to the diagnostic charge to reach the even $100. The tax rate was approximately 17%, which was not told to me beforehand. I find this business practice unacceptable and would not recommend your services to others. read more

One star might be too many. I took my wife's car in for an oil change last January and was told that the car needed a new battery, rear brakes and rear shocks. The car is driven very little and was starting fine in the cold, so didn't have any of that work done. Six months and 650 miles later I had the brakes checked at another shop. Everything was good to go, except that they noted very little oil on the dipstick. (My bad for not checking, but the car has never used or leaked oil.) I've added at least 1.5 quarts and it's still low. Still barely showing on the dipstick. I used Midas for years back when Ron was the manager, and was always happy with the service he provided. Soon after he left when I had the differential oil changed in my truck they also changed the engine oil and filter. I hadn't asked for that. I won't be going back. read more

DO NOT COME TO THIS MIDAS! They will scam you. Giving them 1 out of 5 stars feels generous, because they don't deserve a single Star. My driver side seat belt buckle stopped working, and I couldn't get my seat belt to click into the buckle. I took it into Midas hoping for them to give me a reasonable price but I was heavily mistaken. Jackson at Midas called me saying it was going to be $741 to get it fixed. I questioned the price because it was expensive for a simple seat belt fix, and then he quickly says, "oh my bad I miss calculated, $556 will be the total". I told him I didn't want it fixed and that I was coming to pick it up to get another estimate on it elsewhere. When I enter the shop to get my car, Jackson then tells me that it's going to cost $196 for a diagnostic fee on the car, and that I'm not getting my keys till I pay the amount. Nearly $200 just to look at a freaking seat belt is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS! I asked why it was so expensive and he responded with, "well we looked at it for an hour." As a broke college student this was way out of my budget. I've never had to pay over $50 for a diagnostic. I told him I wanted to step outside and make some phone calls to figure it out. I called the Midas by my home in Minneapolis, and they said they've never charged over $75 for any sort of diagnostic, even for hours of looking at an engine. I then called Midas corporate and they were furious with the price of $196, and filed a claim against this Midas location. Once I found this out, I stormed back in there and told Jackson about who I called. He instantly got nervous when I mentioned that I talked to corporate, so he was fully aware of the extortion he was committing. "How about I just give you the keys back and we call it even," he responded. Since I had been there for 3 hours trying to deal with the situation, I decided to take my keys and go. I questioned myself on why he folded so easily to give me my keys back. After doing research I found out that in Iowa, car repair shops are required to get customer consent before operating on a vehicle if the price is above $50, and that extortion is a punishable offense by law and classified as a felony in most cases, no matter the amount of money demanded. Jackson knew exactly what he was trying to do and didn't want to have to face legal action, so he took the easy way out. I ended up taking my car to Ron's Auto Repair Center where they were friendly, transparent, and only charged me $160 for everything. The frustrating thing is that Ron's called me and explained to me what the seat belt issue was, and that it didn't take much time or effort to fix. This Midas preys on broke college students in Ames and is an absolute disgrace to the Midas name. read more

We had a bad experience with this Midas. My son needed his seat belt fixed. They looked at it and quoted $771 to fix it. That was more than anticipated, and he decided not to get the work done. They wanted $200 for a diagnostic (looking at the buckle) and wouldn't give him his keys back unless he paid the $200. We had to get Midas Corporate involved. He ended up going to a different mechanic who replaced the seat belt for $170 and no diagnostic cost. Driver beware. This was a scam. read more

Warning! Take your car somewhere else if want competent service by honest people. We took our car to Midas in Ames for a simple oil change. The car leaked oil after the change. When we took the car to a different shop that had done good work for us in the past, they quickly determined that whoever had last changed the oil had stripped the threads in the oil pan where the drain plug screws into it. The hole could not be rethreaded because the oil pan metal is too hard, so the whole oil pan would need to be replaced at a cost of $700+. We had to contact Midas five times before they would respond to our complaint. The bottom line is that they took no responsibility for wrecking our oil pan and could offer us only a "courtesy inspection" in their Ankeny shop, with us bearing the cost of any additional work that would be required to fix the problem. I am an Active duty military member who was in the middle of a cross country move with my entire family. my wife's van had a wiring issue that left us stranded. we were able to limp it to Ames where we called Midas 15 minutes before they closed and they openly stayed late and diagnosed my vehicle and were able to fix it!! the Guys at the Ames Midas really helped us in a tight spot!! read more

I went to this shop because they could get me in quickly. I needed the rear door latch assembly replaced. They gave me a sheet with their diagnostic costs and the estimate for the part, which was over $900, a little under $1100. I felt like they pressured me to order the part quickly. I also felt they were exaggerating how impossible it would be to find a cheaper option for this part. It's possible they were giving me the information they believed was in my best interest, but I suspect otherwise and was uncomfortable with many of the answers they gave me. I called our dealership for a second opinion on the part. They could order the part and fix it for us later that week. The total for the part and the labor was $466, and I was in and out in under one hour. I won't be back, and I wouldn't recommend them to others. read more

I broke down on November 30th after the football game on I35 south of Ames. I was told by the tow truck company that Midas would be a good place to go. I called in Monday to see what was going on, and they said at lunch time that they were pulling the truck into the shop to look. I did not hear from them the rest of the day. I called again on Tuesday and I was told that the coil and spark plug on Cylinder 3 of my truck needed to be replaced, and then some wiring needed to be repaired and a fuse. They also suggested to put new boots on the coils. Total cost was going to be $1,300. I started to ask them on what certain costs, and after some talking, it was down to $800 dollars, but they got me because I live out of town and it would have been inconvenient to tow all over town. I reluctantly agreed to the repair, they fix it, and get a ride Wednesday morning to pick it up. I drive it 50 miles and the truck is shuttering again, I am now broke down in Hampton, Iowa. I decided to tow the truck home. Now that the truck is in Mason City, I was able to pull a code of a misfire on cylinder one. I pull the coil, and I see and hear that the new boot is not on the coil at all. I pull the second cylinder, and I realized that the spring on the boot is not even in the boot at all, so it was going to be a matter of time. I called Midas after I find out on a Saturday and Bill, the manager was gone, but was going to get a message and call me back. I get a call on Monday from the same guy that I talked to on Saturday, and he said that Bill was out. He called the district manager with my concerns, and then this guy called me back after only a few minutes and said that the District manager can't do anything, and that the local will have to decide if there is any refunds. I asked to just get a phone call daily to keep on what's going on. Tuesday - No call. Wednesday - I finally called Bill in the afternoon, and he acted as if this was the first of hearing about it. He says now that I have to wait for him to talk with the District manager. Thursday later in the day - Bill is on the phone, but tells the other guy to tell me that he is going to visit with the district manager on Friday to get some sort of resolution. Friday - Stop by around 2:15 as I was back in town, and Bill said that the district manager was not yet in the store, and was tied up in Ankeny. Should see him and will let me know. Saturday - No phone call or anything. Complete lack of professionalism. Complete lack of ownership of shoddy workmanship. The customer should not have to continuously call and check. My kid will be going to ISU next fall and I will be darn sure that this is not a place he goes to for any repairs. read more

I got a faulty oil change done at jiffy lube and my car was leaking oil. I went to just buy the oil and refill it myself. Instead, Jason and the rest of the crew there made sure my oil was filled and the filter was replaced. Kevin was great. I was concerned about my oil level light continuously coming on just weeks after getting my oil changed. Kevin looked at the car and devised a plan to figure out what was happening, since he couldn't find evidence of a leak but did see that the levels were low. Ames, Iowa tookk advantage of my son diagnosed his car and replaced parts that were 3 times higher then dealership and he didn't make it a week and same issue so the $1300 issue from the first go around wasn't fixed they said they miss diagnosed the issue so the parts they replaced were fine and now chargers another $280 to replace a different part that is $13.00 from the dealer and 20 minutes to fix what a scam business will never go to Midas again and will tell everyone else not to go there either these people are suppose to be professionals!! read more

I was wondering did they even change the oil??? My car has been having major problems lately so I brought it somewhere else and they said my oil is completely empty and has been leaking. Took my car in for a good deal on an oil change, and was told that I need my turbo replaced asap due to an oil leak (~$3000). They said they replace turbos all the time. I took my car the Ford dealership for a second opinion because Im a college girl who's easily ripped off, and Ford said the oil leak is so incredibly minor that it doesn't come anywhere near needing repair. They said they couldn't believe someone tried to get me to replace the turbo, and were disgusted that that was recommended. Ford even did the service for free because they felt so bad that Midas tried to rip me off.... don't take your car here. read more

However, only 100 miles later my engine blows out from the coolent being out which they said it was full. Very disappointed in the service I received. I was charged for new brakes and rotors and later found out they just cleaned my old rotors and put them back on. The service at Midas is overpriced. If all they did was just clean my rotors then I should not have been charged over $650. I was definitely taken advantage of by this shop and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I have to make this clear. I went to Midas Mach 7th, a Month & half ago to check my car. They had on the website that they close at 6:00 pm, but the guy told me they would close that day at​ 5 pm. I proceed to bring my car at 3:30 pm. They check everything and called me saying that the car was in great shape (77,000 miles​, great car). When I got there, I asked them details like, what about the oil, the tires, the cooling? the guy said everything looks​ great. I still have the paper they filled saying that everything was okay. Guess what? I went back to Midas here at Ames, IA with the same guy​...​. I told them that I had the engine light on, and I need them to check it out. They found that there was a HUGE problem with the Engine, and its becaue there was almost ZERO Cooling liquid. The guy (who was the same guy as the​ first time I went, the same guy who rush me to leave because they were about to close even though the website stated that they would be open for an extra hour). The second​ time I went this guy, couldn't even look at me, they gave me the cooling liquid for free, and they charged me the Oil change. NOW, I HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO REPAIR ON AN USELESS ENGINE BECAUSE these guys didn't make their job. If you are a person who cares about your car, don't go to MIDAS. THEY SCREW MY LIFE, and now I HAVE TO PAY FOR THEY HORRIBLE JOB THEY DID. The first time, I even gave them tips so that they could get a coffee... NOW, I have NO CAR BECAUSE OF THAT MISERABLE JOB. Got my radiator fan replaced here, I open my hood up to check my oil and find that the dipstick is broken off. I know for a fact it was the technician, as the dipstick head was under the engine cover. Very unprofessional. read more
