Came back for a nostalgic visit after many years away from the island. Well, unfortunately, we left a bit disappointed. On the other hand, prices aren't to bad and they offer a Monday-Friday 10% off lunch special for military and 55+ folks. Back in the day it was a revolving sushi bar. Now, you can place your order with a server or scan the QR code by your table/stool and order via your phone. Nice to have both options available. We chose to order on our phone. You place your order (s) and a boat come out of the kitchen with your dish(es), you push a button and the boat returns to the kitchen. Fun! Service was very hospitable but the food was just average. Anyway, happy they are still around but, honestly, we prefer the revolving sushi bar option where the food comes around and you pick what you want. However, economically this version seems to make more sense these days. Mahalo
I ordered the soft shell crab tempura. It was missing part of the body and half the legs. They were also out 17 dishes.
I love genki for its wide variety of fried options. We got tempura eggplant, string bean, and karaage. Service with the sushi train was fast and food came quickly. Probably would not come again though; for a casual lunch it was a bit pricey.
Food is great, you pay per plate (not all-you-can-eat). The bill stacks up pretty quickly, for three people we paid about $70.The service is top tier, we were the last group and left a little after closing, but they were so kind about it. It's a great place to come and try, the way they deliver some of the food is pretty cool. Check it out!
Decent to good tasting sushi. Service was friendly and polite despite being busy. Overall though for the amount of food you get, it's a little bit on the expensive side. Wouldnt mind eating here again but would probably be able to get a better deal on sushi with better prices elsewhere. 3 stars
It is what it is. Met expectations. While things get more and more expensive locally, this was surprisingly not that expensive for our group. I'm not sure if the same could be said if it were just 1 or 2 people. I set the bar appropriately, so meaning, it's not going to be Japan, frest off the boat best ahi in the world. That being said, if you're okay with Foodland, you'll be happy here. Nothing to brag about as far as Ahi, Salmon or other fish, but it fills the need. My son loved watching the race car delivery cars that bring the nigiri to our table. Extra point for entertaining the young ones. There is tons of parking. If you can't find any on the ground level, take the ramp up to the second level parking where it is generally less than half full. Overall with all the local eateries falling to our economy, wage and rent hikes; I'm happy to still have Genki Sushi :).
Sushi has gotten pricey now but Genki is still a bargain compared to high quality sushi places. I can cure my sushi crave at Genki where they have my favorites. Spicy tuna and their Nigiri sushi are all good. Service is super fast once you place your order via QR code through your phone. The food gets zipped to your table via fast conveyor system. Water, tea is complimentary and they have all the popular soft drinks. They also have good take out menu with various bento combos.
I was at the Kapahulu Safeway and wanted to grab a bite to eat. I'm not a huge fan of Genki, but I'm slowly warming up to them. The last time I ate at Genki at Waikele it was good. I like their bento sets and spicy bomb. I got one bento with chicken karaage and spicy ahi. I got another bento with chicken katsu and spicy ahi. I came back a few days later and picked up the ika karaage with spicy ahi and chicken karaage with spicy ahi. Both times I also ordered the spicy bomb. I have to admit the food was so good both times. The chicken that I received was tender and juicy. However, the fried ika is my favorite. The spicy bomb with ahi and unagi sauce was also yummy. I'm used to my ahi being bite sized. Genki likes to dice up their fish, which is ok, as long as it's not mush like some other spots.
Spend about $40 here I think it's fair pricing not too bad for the amount me and my daughter got
Dinner in Kapahulu, Honolulu, Hawaii... My sister and mom went to a retirement party on Sunday and left my niece, my brother-in-law, and me to find our own dinner. I knew that we had different tastes in food, and this adventure made it more apparent. My brother-in-law chose to dine at Genki Sushi. The Ward and Ala Moana locations close earlier, so we went to Kapahulu, which closes at 9pm. The free shared parking lot (with Safeway, Pita Pit, Panda Express, Chronic Tacos, etc.) was busy at peak dinnertime. I offered to get out of the car and reserve a table for us. Wouldn't you know it... I forgot my phone at home. I wasn't able to scan the QR code and put us on the wait list. The workers were very nice and entered my name on the list. They said they'd call my name when a table (counter or booth) was available - because they couldn't text me. They told me it would be about a half an hour wait. We stood outside in the dark since the benches were taken. The lights eventually went on. When we were seated at a table, we ordered on my niece's phone. My niece and brother-in-law basically had spam sushi and spicy ahi poke nigiri. I got the gyoza, salmon/ikura/cucumber bite, stuffed mushrooms, and the salmon karaage. They didn't have kabocha tempura on the online menu (per my niece. I was looking at the menu at the table.) I was full, but it wasn't the best food I've ever eaten. It was a pleasant time together, and I appreciate the staff for their service at a busy time. Note: they remembered to bring a tea cup for my brother-in-law... but never filled it. At least tea is complimentary! We didn't get a chance to ask staff to fill the cup because the food arrived via conveyor belt system. It's really cool and efficient!
Returned to visit this place after a long while and discovered a couple things. Most importantly, their dishes are still excellent; however, customers no longer can use iPad ton order their dishes. Instead, scan bar code to order is the new method that I am not used to doing it. Also, they no longer give out combination to customs for using outside restrooms. Employee now escorts customers and unlocks the restroom door for them, and the worst part is: only the "female" restroom, is available for all, even for guys!! Well, that really takes some "getting-use-to-it, at least for me. Overall, I think I like the old way, using the iPad, better. Perhaps, the management has good reasons for the changes that may have negatively impacted customers from frequent this highly regarded sushi eatery.
I haven't been in about 3.5 years and decided to give them a try. You first scan the QR code and join the waitlist. Waited about 15 minutes for party of 5. You order everything on your phone and when you are ready you press "send to kitchen". Our food came out within 2-4 minutes after ordering. The whole process is so convenient. The food comes on these train looking dishes right to your table. All my kids had a fun time with it and pressing the button to send the empty dishes back. Everything is very reasonably priced. Nothing over the top or outrageous. Love that they have egg, hot dog, and spam for the kids. Their keiki meal is the best way to go and for only $6 it's a great deal. Customer service was great and the staff was very friendly. We will be back! ***They need to clean the train dishes they look messy and unclean.
Son son and I popped in for lunch today. We arrived just before they opened, so we were the first to sit. The order: Daddy's favorites: Salmon Skin Roll, Ultimate Trio Nigiri (ahi, salmon, hamachi), Son son's favorites: Veg Tempura, Salmon Karaage, Shinko Maki It's our normal order. Tempura was hot and crispy, salmon skin was umami and crunchy, salmon Karaage crispy and soft inside. The staff were friendly and attentive. A great lunch before checking out the Waikiki Aquarium. read more
The food is still as good as ever. Potato fries were less salty, but still the best fries IMO! Last review was 11 years ago! Really? Same gals for dunch! We only stayed 90 minutes this time. We getting old. Booth seats were designed a certain way and they are very effective. Oh so hard and uncomfortable. The service is still great. Loads of available parking off peak hours. read more
This is the Kapahulu shopping center one with the Safeway, AT&T and other businesses. Haven't been here in a long while. Sushi have increased in price. Average plate with 2 pieces run around $5.25. Instead of the sushi going around, you order via your phone with the QR code at your seat. A little more work cuz you have to sign in, etc. After ordering on your phone, the sushi is delivered via the little train right to your booth. Guess less waste that way. The servers were very attentive, making sure your water or tea is replenished. They were super nice. After you press the pay tab button above your seat and go pay the bill at the front. To be honest, even as a sushi lover, Genki hasn't really been on my radar as much as a year or so ago. Ever since price inflation and other sushi options being available, it's rare for me to land on this spot. However, on a random night I was craving sushi but wasn't too hungry, so Genki just happened to be the most fitting option especially as it was still open (this one closes 1 hour later than some other genki locations). We got to the lot of safeway where there was plenty of parking. I scanned to go into the waitlist. We got in fairly quickly, and were seated and got started right away. Food: Everything was honestly so good, please refer to the image I have below, it has all the main things we ordered as well as all the names listed. I'd definitely recommend the ultimate trio, unagi roll, and spicy ahi ebi rolls. Notes: - One thing that initially threw me off was one of the tables was getting all of their orders delivered in a paper box/container. We got dish ware thankfully but I was just thrown off especially when one of the containers got stuck and got flung open right next to us LOL - Another thing is, although expected, the cleanliness of this establishment wasn't exactly the best. I understand that it is a bit old and can be busy but I did see some little critters around and just unattended areas. Didn't bother me too much though. read more

Wow! It's changed a lot. Tablets are gone. Code to scan for menus and the color of plates don't matter. But I'm not complaining! Food seems way more fresh and tasty. New management? Higher standards? I don't know but i loved everything. We tried their udon sukiyaki special today for the first time and I really liked it and so did my daughter. This is really a good place to take young kids or if you like a lot of options I would suggest here. Everything came out super fast and our water and tea was constantly filled up. This is my first time at this location. It's located in the Kapahulu Safeway strip mall where a steak place closed down. Although we sat at the bar area, I requested that no one sits next to me to add space between (COVID precautions). We had come in early before the crowd and nice, not too noisy. We had ordered so much...hunger really took over. We ordered artificial crab, tuna, and cucumber sushi to start with wasabi plus shoyu to dip. The wasabi adds a distinct great flavor with each sushi. I love the sweet inari sushi which changes things after the other sushi, almost dessert like. Other side dish is crunchy shrimp Katsu, The two baked mussels were divine with that Mayo topping. A side dish of tofu with bonito really adds flavor with wasabi shoyu dip and fried chicken wings. All this came out to $61. You should watch those white plates...lol! All in all, it was worth it! AMAZING! I want more of everything! The fish was so fresh, melt in your mouth! All the flavors were so good! My favorite was probably the spicy seared ahi but seriously everything was amazing. Slightly different from the sushi train places that's I've been too. There is a tablet at your booth. You pick what you want from it and a train delivers it right to your table. Service was very quick. There are several locations on the island but I would highly recommend going. read more

At the end of the day i accept that im foolish to continue ordering Genki Sushi through Door Dash thinking it will be a different experience when the past 4x my food arrived in the same condition. The problem im experiencing is I order a Spicy Tuna Ebi Fry roll which if ordered in resturant comes topped with green onions and sweet chili sauce. When I order through these food delivery services it comes with zero green onions and maybe a drip of sweet chili sauce (if im lucky.) It's basically a shrinp roll with a little tuna on top. It's become such an issue that I've started buying my own sweet chilli sauce and green onions from the grocery store in preparation for the nights my wife orders door dash. I'll add photos of the recent "Spicy Tuna Ebi Fry Roll" order, it's sad. I'm sharing my unfortunate dissatisfaction with the food in hopes that perhaps a manager sees it and they can address the issue. Thank you for your attention to the matter. read more

Per their website, "Genki Sushi" is a chain with multiple locations in HI. One feature that differentiates this chain's dine-in experience is the usage of conveyor belts to transfer dishes to the customer. My experience, however, is limited to take-out. This store is located in the same shopping center as a Safeway grocery. During my stay in Honolulu, I would place a to-go sushi order; I would go make purchases in the Safeway; and then pick up my sushi order. On each occasion, the quality of my food was very good. The packaging and presentation was very nice. And they always included a complete set of condiments (soy sauces, ginger and wasabi) and utensils. Sometimes, after a full day of activities, you just want a something light for dinner. And the price for the set meals was reasonable. This restaurant helped to keep it simple. read more

I'm a huge fan of other Genki locations (Ewa Beach in particular) so I was excited there was one near my job. But wow, what a huge disappointment! I ordered three nigiri options: seared spicy ahi, garlic salmon and tamago. Thank goodness I ordered the tamago because other than one of the ahi pieces, it was the only edible thing I received. One slice of ahi had a thick vein of fat through it that couldn't be chewed through. Both pieces of salmon were even worse. So unpleasant, especially after waiting nearly 30 minutes for it to be ready. They included one packet of shoyu and one of ginger, but no chopsticks or napkins. The employees were friendly, and brought my food out to me when it was ready, so there's that. read more

They would have gotten a 5 star if they didn't put us between people on the counter, one seat away would have been nice. They have a electronic check in and wait system which works well. You also have option for a table or counter or next available. We normally select next available, not gonna be picky when you hungry. This place is not your 5 star sushi bar but its great for a fast sushi dinner, comparible the eat all you can sushi bars. Love their new ordering tablets and train system. Prices have gone up in recent years, but its expected with the cost of living on the rise. Service is great, if you need something you can call for help on the tablet or flag someone down, I find flagging the wait help down is faster then the tablet. Can't go wrong with their menu they have a little bit for everyone's taste palette. Some of our favorites are in the pictures. Parking is not always easy you just have to be patient and wait for parking. The location is ideal and in a strip mall and safeway next door so can do your grocery shopping too. This location is kinda smaller than most but its okay, if you get a table. We had the counter and the only downside is they actually seat every seat versus maybe spacing us out a "wee bit". read more

Hi Marlon, I believe they just have beer and maybe sake. I usually just drink tea, so haven't really paid attention as to the brands, etc. No hards though.
