Instead of the sushi going around, you order via your phone with the QR code at your seat. A little more work cuz you have to sign in, etc. After ordering on your phone, the sushi is delivered via the little train right to your booth. Guess less waste that way. The servers were very attentive, making sure your water or tea is replenished. They were super nice. After you press the pay tab button above your seat and go pay the bill at the front. It is what it is. Met expectations. While things get more and more expensive locally, this was surprisingly not that expensive for our group. I'm not sure if the same could be said if it were just 1 or 2 people. I set the bar appropriately, so meaning, it's not going to be Japan, frest off the boat best ahi in the world. That being said, if you're okay with Foodland, you'll be happy here. Nothing to brag about as far as Ahi, Salmon or other fish, but it fills the need. My son loved watching the race car delivery cars that bring the nigiri to our table. Extra point for entertaining the young ones. There is tons of parking. If you can't find any on the ground level, take the ramp up to the second level parking where it is generally less than half full. Returned to visit this place after a long while and discovered a couple things. Most importantly, their dishes are still excellent; however, customers no longer can use iPad ton order their dishes. Instead, scan bar code to order is the new method that I am not used to doing it. Also, they no longer give out combination to customs for using outside restrooms. Employee now escorts customers and unlocks the restroom door for them, and the worst part is: only the "female" restroom, is available for all, even for guys!! Well, that really takes some "getting-use-to-it, at least for me. Overall, I think I like the old way, using the iPad, better. I was at the Kapahulu Safeway and wanted to grab a bite to eat. I'm not a huge fan of Genki, but I'm slowly warming up to them. The last time I ate at Genki at Waikele it was good. I like their bento sets and spicy bomb. I got one bento with chicken karaage and spicy ahi. I got another bento with chicken katsu and spicy ahi. I came back a few days later and picked up the ika karaage with spicy ahi and chicken karaage with spicy ahi. Both times I also ordered the spicy bomb. I have to admit the food was so good both times. The chicken that I received was tender and juicy. However, the fried ika is my favorite. The spicy bomb with ahi and unagi sauce was also yummy. I'm used to my ahi being bite sized. Genki likes to dice up their fish, which is ok, as long as it's not mush like some other spots. read more

To be honest, even as a sushi lover, Genki hasn't really been on my radar as much as a year or so ago. Ever since price inflation and other sushi options being available, it's rare for me to land on this spot. However, on a random night I was craving sushi but wasn't too hungry, so Genki just happened to be the most fitting option especially as it was still open (this one closes 1 hour later than some other genki locations). We got to the lot of safeway where there was plenty of parking. I scanned to go into the waitlist. We got in fairly quickly, and were seated and got started right away. Food: Everything was honestly so good, please refer to the image I have below, it has all the main things we ordered as well as all the names listed. I'd definitely recommend the ultimate trio, unagi roll, and spicy ahi ebi rolls. Notes: - One thing that initially threw me off was one of the tables was getting all of their orders delivered in a paper box/container. We got dish ware thankfully but I was just thrown off especially when one of the containers got stuck and got flung open right next to us LOL - Another thing is, although expected, the cleanliness of this establishment wasn't exactly the best. I knew that we had different tastes in food, and this adventure made it more apparent. My brother-in-law chose to dine at Genki Sushi. The Ward and Ala Moana locations close earlier, so we went to Kapahulu, which closes at 9pm. The free shared parking lot (with Safeway, Pita Pit, Panda Express, Chronic Tacos, etc.) was busy at peak dinnertime. I offered to get out of the car and reserve a table for us. Wouldn't you know it... I forgot my phone at home. I wasn't able to scan the QR code and put us on the wait list. The workers were very nice and entered my name on the list. They said they'd call my name when a table (counter or booth) was available - because they couldn't text me. They told me it would be about a half an hour wait. We stood outside in the dark since the benches were taken. The lights eventually went on. When we were seated at a table, we ordered on my niece's phone. My niece and brother-in-law basically had spam sushi and spicy ahi poke nigiri. I got the gyoza, salmon/ikura/cucumber bite, stuffed mushrooms, and the salmon karaage. They didn't have kabocha tempura on the online menu (per my niece. I was looking at the menu at the table.) I was full, but it wasn't the best food I've ever eaten. It was a pleasant time together, and I appreciate the staff for their service at a busy time. Note: they remembered to bring a tea cup for my brother-in-law... but never filled it. This store has a low rating for a reason. Non-existent customer service and terrible food at crazy prices. Went on a Tuesday evening and there was no crowd. But I guess seats filled, so they pointed at the waitlist qr code and barely acknowledged us. We were waitlist #1 lol. The two Asian girls that were servers had dead drained faces and had absolutely no customer service at all. I could immediately sense the vibes were off the moment I walked in and saw their faces. They were both rude and looked rude. Must be a miserable place to work at. Got seated and the girl server did not explain how to use any of the conveyor belt buttons. This is not your regular sushi boat conveyor belt store, they do not revolve any sushi. It only sends the ones you order yourself on the belt. Ordered a few items, the first few sushi items came quickly but the last item which was a beef bowl that we ordered was no where in sight for a long time. Odd cause the other items came immediately. Tried flagging down servers for a while but they were in their own head and tried using the call button and lol ofc it didn't work. Mind you the place was not crazy packed or busy as the belts do most of the work. Bowl never came. Finally got fed up and went to the front, paid, and left. I haven't been in about 3.5 years and decided to give them a try. You first scan the QR code and join the waitlist. Waited about 15 minutes for party of 5. You order everything on your phone and when you are ready you press "send to kitchen". Our food came out within 2-4 minutes after ordering. The whole process is so convenient. The food comes on these train looking dishes right to your table. All my kids had a fun time with it and pressing the button to send the empty dishes back. Everything is very reasonably priced. Nothing over the top or outrageous. Love that they have egg, hot dog, and spam for the kids. Their keiki meal is the best way to go and for only $6 it's a great deal. I also couldn't resist a second helping of the rainbow sushi roll. The food here is 10/10, but unfortunately the service sucks. You only see the staff to be seated and when you leave to pay the bill. At the end of the day i accept that im foolish to continue ordering Genki Sushi through Door Dash thinking it will be a different experience when the past 4x my food arrived in the same condition. The problem im experiencing is I order a Spicy Tuna Ebi Fry roll which if ordered in resturant comes topped with green onions and sweet chili sauce. When I order through these food delivery services it comes with zero green onions and maybe a drip of sweet chili sauce (if im lucky.) It's basically a shrinp roll with a little tuna on top. It's become such an issue that I've started buying my own sweet chilli sauce and green onions from the grocery store in preparation for the nights my wife orders door dash. I'll add photos of the recent "Spicy Tuna Ebi Fry Roll" order, it's sad. Wow! It's changed a lot. Tablets are gone. Code to scan for menus and the color of plates don't matter. But I'm not complaining! Food seems way more fresh and tasty. New management? Higher standards? This is the first time visiting this location and Genki since COVID and it left much to be desired. Basically ordering is done from your smartphone and the only time you see wait staff is at the beginning and end of your visit. 1) Food- was good and consistent like I remembered. 2) Ambiance- liked the to the table conveyor belt delivery. Cleanliness was an issue with the conveyor belt tracks as there was spilled/dried food that looks as though wasn't cleaned for some time. Weird setup as you have to walk to the left of the front desk/register past a crowded drink area to get to your table. 3) Service- this is where stars were removed and maybe it was a new servers. When my party entered, we were told wait would be maybe a few minutes. Waited close to 20+ min can seem like an eternity when you have hungry kids. But that could've been forgotten had our server not cleared our table and assumed we were done eating when we got up to go to the restroom (uneaten food still on the table) as if we were at a fast food restaurant. When we returned, server said "sorry" and left immediately to leave someone else to wrap up the check (that also took a long time with the server/cashier forcing out a thank you at the very end). Gone are the days when you were greeted with a cheerful hello when entering a Genki Sushi. Needless to say that I will not be visiting this location again. This is my first time at this location. It's located in the Kapahulu Safeway strip mall where a steak place closed down. Although we sat at the bar area, I requested that no one sits next to me to add space between (COVID precautions). We had come in early before the crowd and nice, not too noisy. We had ordered so much...hunger really took over. We ordered artificial crab, tuna, and cucumber sushi to start with wasabi plus shoyu to dip. The wasabi adds a distinct great flavor with each sushi. I love the sweet inari sushi which changes things after the other sushi, almost dessert like. Other side dish is crunchy shrimp Katsu, The two baked mussels were divine with that Mayo topping. A side dish of tofu with bonito really adds flavor with wasabi shoyu dip and fried chicken wings. All this came out to $61. You should watch those white plates...lol! All in all, it was worth it! AMAZING! I want more of everything! The fish was so fresh, melt in your mouth! All the flavors were so good! My favorite was probably the spicy seared ahi but seriously everything was amazing. Slightly different from the sushi train places that's I've been too. There is a tablet at your booth. You pick what you want from it and a train delivers it right to your table. Per their website, "Genki Sushi" is a chain with multiple locations in HI. One feature that differentiates this chain's dine-in experience is the usage of conveyor belts to transfer dishes to the customer. My experience, however, is limited to take-out. This store is located in the same shopping center as a Safeway grocery. During my stay in Honolulu, I would place a to-go sushi order; I would go make purchases in the Safeway; and then pick up my sushi order. On each occasion, the quality of my food was very good. The packaging and presentation was very nice. And they always included a complete set of condiments (soy sauces, ginger and wasabi) and utensils. Sometimes, after a full day of activities, you just want a something light for dinner. And the price for the set meals was reasonable. This restaurant helped to keep it simple. read more

Had to wait for a solo seat, as the host/busser/server? had some picking up to do. No worries, 4-5 minutes later, I was sat. Got on their toast app, I knew exactly what I wanted. Ordered. Everything went fine. I enjoyed my late lunch. After a fast, this was my first meal of the day. I usually only eat half of the shari (sushi rice). Just wanted some fishy protein. Everything was over-sauced, my new fave is the wagyu-ikura nori wrap. So much kabayaki sauce, I could barely taste the beef! And choke ikura. Everything seemed off-balance. I know it's on the bottom of the totem pole for sushi, but it's usually really good! Had to press the bell several times to pay, finally went to the front and waited. And waited. You also have option for a table or counter or next available. We normally select next available, not gonna be picky when you hungry. This place is not your 5 star sushi bar but its great for a fast sushi dinner, comparible the eat all you can sushi bars. Love their new ordering tablets and train system. Prices have gone up in recent years, but its expected with the cost of living on the rise. Service is great, if you need something you can call for help on the tablet or flag someone down, I find flagging the wait help down is faster then the tablet. This location is next to Kapahulu Safeway, between Supercuts and YoonCy, and has a 2 level bullet train delivery system which perfect if you want to entertain kids. I came here to entertain my nieces, who had never been to a bullet train Genki. Ordering is done off the electronic tablet which sends the message to the kitchen, who places your sushi on a train and sends it straight to your seat. I like this better than conveyor belt sushi which sits and goes past everybody's seat multiple times. I wasn't expecting to like the food because I'm not a big sushi eater, but they have some very tasty unique (non-sushi) items that are very good. We accidentally ordered 2 sukiyaki potato (French fries topped with beef sukiyaki, mayo and unagi sauce) and demolished both of them. The agedashi tofu was excellent, the keiki boat was a winner with the 5yr old (spam hot dog egg etc), chicken bowl was delicious. The 3-yr old liked her ikura nigiri, probably because it looks like boba, and the adults enjoyed the rolls and stuff we ordered.
