I was in the area and wanted Japanese food. This place popped up and I decided to try it. Despite the relatively high reviews on Google, the food was quite average. Maybe it is good for the area. There are tables in the middle of the dining room with booths lining the sides. I had the beef teriyaki lunch bento and it was ok. Nothing outstanding or exciting about it. The service was ok. I genuinely do not understand the bad reviews! Yes, it's not a place that you must visit Vancouver just to come here. But it's a stellar place for if you're in the area! The food is not greasy and tastes very fresh and clean. The restaurant itself is also very clean and seems newly renovated. The waitresses here are very friendly and they try their very best to cater to our needs. I already visited this place twice and have not gotten sick once from the raw fish. Situated in Parkgate plaza, it's a quaint family run restaurant. Service was similar to sushi California, have to flag our server down for service. Their take out is also very convenient since COVID happened. Everything is always fresh and on point. The prices are a bit higher than sushi California, but given they're one of three Japanese restaurants on this side of town, I think it's justifiable. I like their sashimi salad, their sauce is a bit spicy. Prawn tempura is also very crispy and tender shrimp, even when we got it home. Rolls were good portions too, and nigiri sushi was on point. I a really solid 3 star place. Really fast, not expensive, and very decent. I've had their miso soup (fine apart from it being weird that it's the first thing that comes out), age dashi tofu / fried tofu in sweet soy broth (the fried tofu is nuked and is only sitting in broth but several Vancouver Japanese restaurants serve it like this so maybe ppl here think that's how the fish should be?), saba shio yaki / grilled mackerel (could use a little more salt and would prefer if it's less nuked, but very happy I can eat this locally at all), dragon roll, uni / sea urchin nigiri, tuna nigiri, ikura / salmon roe nigiri, amongst a few other things, and it's well above average for a Japanese restaurant in a fairly suburban area outside of Japan. I was visiting back in North Vancouver and went to Genji for my first time. I'm so glad I came here. Everything exceeded my expectations. They have nice instrumental music playing, individual booths for an intimate private dining experience, The service was very fast and the quality of the sushi was excellent. I know the quality of a sushi restaurant the moment I see their ginger. If they have pink ginger I know that typically, the sushi isn't as good. The white ginger on the other hand is the better quality and this place has the white ginger. Here are the four rolls I tried: Dynamite: prawn tempura, avocado, and crab meat. This was different than a typical dynamite roll that I'm used to. Nonetheless there is a lot of rice and it was still good. Spencer Roll: prawn, crab meat and special sauce. This was my favorite role! It was so yummy and I loved the sauce. B.C roll: salmon skin, cucumber with sauce. The skin was kind of chewy and the texture was different but a decent roll. Baked Scalp: California roll with scallop on top and baked to perfection. This was a wonderful tasting roll. It was a lot of goodness my mouth. Definitely come here if you were in the Deepcove/North Vancouver area! Worth your while for sure. read more

My main sushi place in the area is closed on Mondays, but I found myself needing the comfort of some sush' and decided to check this place out. I called and ordered take out as I'm feeling particularly antisocial today (called out sick from work because I was feeling nauseous) and the lady was very nice. She asked my phone number and order and thanked me. I had to go to shoppers to buy anti nausea pills and figured I'd pop in afterwards. It was very quick and my food was done about 10 minutes after I called. It is pretty decent sushi. I still prefer Momji but I'd come back if Momji was closed. Anniversary dinner. Our usual Japanese spot closed as it's a Monday. Our 2nd go-to also closed so here we land. 3 of us order a variety of items. The miso was nice. The tea good but don't count on a refill. Not once during our visit were our drinks refilled. Maybe it is due to our seating in a private side table that we were left alone. My hubs figures they are short-staffed. Likely. The dynamite roll was a california roll with a piece of prawn tempura. I don't like california roll so that was disappointing. The yam tempura is ok. A little sweeter than what we prefer. In fact everything felt rather sweet. The best item was the beef teriyaki. It was tasty. The rolls disappointed (cali, avocado, dynamite & spencer). The miso & beef teriyaki were ok. Previous visits left us uninspired and each time we came in was due to the meal out falling on a Monday. Not likely to return. But if we do i will update. read more

After a snow hike up Mt. Seymour we came down pretty hungry. The Raven was topped up full, and so HEY, we got to try something new! Genji Sushi was recommended by a local from that side of the inlet and it did not disappoint. We pretty much all had the Teriyaki bowls. First though, lovely steamed Edamame, with the perfect salty edge for our sweated out bod's. Fresh and satisfying, Gen Mai Chai is also served, (that is toasted rice green tea). Perfect. Service is polite and patient, and there are private booths to sit in, giving the place a little romantic feel to it. read more

So even though I went to an izakaya place for lunch, it didn't satisfy my sushi craving so I had to grab some for dinner. Since Genji is two blocks away from home and it was closed on the long weekend when I tried to grab takeout, it was the easiest choice. The boyfriend ordered a few rolls and said they were pretty decent, although the spicy tuna was way too spicy for his liking. I used to love spicy tuna rolls (or any spicy roll) but now I tend to stay away as I feel that the spice takes away the natural flavours of the fish, however I have tried genji's spicy tuna rolls a few times and I have to say, their spicy sauce is a lot stronger than other places. Much too overpowering. I ordered the temaki combo ($8.95) which consisted of dynamite, spicy tuna and spicy chopped scallop cones, but I asked for non spicy. I'm a huge fan as it's such a cheap meal and the three cones definitely fill me up. All three cones also are highly satisfying and taste pretty good. I typically like places that chop their scallop up more finely (that's just a personal preference) but Genji chops it way too fine and I could barely pick up the pieces with my chopstick so that's one part I didn't necessarily love. My 2 pieces of chopped scallop nigiri were really small and kind of disappointing for $2.25 each. The pieces were slightly thicker than maki rolls and the chopped scallop portion was minimal. Wouldn't order this again. Satisfying enough for a cheap dinner so I'm happy. read more

Delicious! This is the best sushi I've had in North Vancouver. Beautiful presentation, fresh ingredients and friendly service. I brought my 3 year old daughter and they even sliced the rolls extra thin to accommodate her. Came here for a quick bite before guitar lessons in the neighborhood and the food was average. Nothing special, but nothing bad to say about it either. If you're even remotely hungry, skip this place. The quantity of food to cost ratio is ridiculous. I'm all for quality over quantity, but there was nothing extraordinary in the taste of the food, yet it was 1/3 of the portions of comparable sushi spots. Have a look at the pictures yourself. The Yakisoba and Don bowl were $10 each and pretty much appetizer size. The only reason they are getting two stars is because the sushi roll and sashimi quality was good. I have never felt so racially discriminated towards. They ignored me, but managed to serve everyone that wasn't white already. They didn't bring us water even though we asked twice. We ended up walking out after half an hour of nothing. I will never go here again and urge everyone to spend their hard earned money in a place that will treat everyone with respect and equality. We waited about15 and then had to ask for the menus, we also had asked for water - which never arrived ...even though we asked 3 times! Also had to ask for tea ...which came about halfway through the meal. An earmark of how authentic and the quality of a Japanese restaurant is their chicken karaage. Not an easy dish to get right but if you can, it can be absolutely delightful. This is definitely one of the regular places where I like to meet up and eat with friends. I go about twice a month and am always more than happy with the food. My favorite is the spicy chopped scallop roll. But they also make an amazing teriyaki plate. Give it a try, and you'll love it. The service is not very fast here so expect to sit with your tea and talk with friends. I've only had a problem once when one of the servers didn't keep track of orders and we were charged for what we didn't order. But overall it's a cute little place with great food. read more

This is the best sushi restaurant in the vicinity of the Cove. Hands down. The cooks know what they are doing, the rolls are always properly rolled and taste great. One in particular, the Genji roll, is something you must try. Also, if you, like me, have a taste for Japanese food that has surpassed simply ordering rolls - you will like it here. Their uni cones, barbecued squid, tuna tataki and hamachi sashimi are all simply divine. Here's a tip: skip the booths, skip the tables. I went here for lunch recently and was impressed with the initial presentation. It has a cute arrangement for seating. The menu had a lot of options and the food was pretty good. My biggest complaint with the place, was the service. They didn't appear to be very busy, yet it took over 15 minutes for someone to come and take our order. My friend had his 1.5 year old with him, which made that wait seem excruciating. The food also took a long time to arrive. We didn't bother to see how long it would take to receive the bill, we simply went to the cashier when we were finished to pay. It was honestly the worst service I've experienced in a restaurant. I generally enjoy writing positive reviews about places, but I felt that this needed to be pointed out. If you're looking for Sushi in the Cove area, keep moving along one block and go to Momiji Sushi; it's a gem. read more

This place is awesome. Kind of out of my way, but definitely worth it. Came here tonight, Thursday June 9, and it was absolutely fantastic. Between two of us, we had the Hawaiian tuna takaki, the Whistler roll, the Bonjai (?) roll, spicy tuna roll, gomaae, ebi sunomono and some sake. Everything was delicious, fresh and interesting. What stands out though was the service. I didn't catch her name, but our server was the best server we may have ever had. Super attentive, offered us a variety of spicy sauces, everything came out perfectly and quickly, gave suggestions, water was always full, and just overall really friendly. Maybe it's because I have become accustomed to bad service from frequenting Sushi Town so often (it's close and cheap but crap), but Genji really did it for me. read more

This is one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to, and I've been to Japan many times. The quality of the food is fantastic and the service is prompt and friendly. The yam roll is especially delicious - it's made with marinated shitaki mushrooms and yam tempura - so yummy! The bento boxes are huge - if you order one, be prepared! They have some interesting chef's specials as well as all the usual favourites done really well. The decor is very plain, so for that reason, I probably wouldn't go there on an evening date, but the food is wonderful. They also play quality classical music on a nice sound system - no terrible "classical hits" albums or cheesy pop music. read more

The booths are cozy and atmospheric. We have gone there alot when we want to be alone in a crowd. The food is freshly prepared, and we need no concern of how fresh the fish is. If you stick to sushi, it is rather inexpensive ($3.50 - $9 per roll if my memory serves me). Other things on the menu are fairly normal pricing. Servers are friendly and non-invasive - more shy if their English isn't very good. The Yam roll is the best in town! I gave it a four because I reserve five for "amazing", but this place is really good consistently. read more

One star solely due to slow/poor service. We ordered four rolls and one sashimi dish and were told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived on time for pickup and the restaurant was barely quarter full. Paid for the order and was told they were waiting for one roll. Sat and waited another twenty five minutes during which time no new patrons entered and two tables paid and left - of the other patrons, only saw one order delivered to a table and one phone call that appeared to be a takeout/delivery order. No staff came and updated me on status until after twenty minutes one server asked if I was waiting for something. I informed her that my order was supposed to be ready twenty minutes earlier - she went to the back had a discussion with someone and within a few minutes my order finally was brought to me. A mature gentleman (likely the owner by his bearing) had been wandering around the restaurant during my wait and passed me several times without inquiring into my wait. Based on the minimal volume during my visit, I would hate to see how they handled any real volume of business. If you are in any hurry or have a timeline don't order from here. I could have spent less than twenty five minutes driving to the Lonsdale area for similar food and faster service. I will not be ordering from here again. read more
