We ordered Umi Special box, and 2 rolls. The sashimi in the box is tasty and the pieces are generous in size. The dressing is refreshing and not over-sweet. The tempura is crispy and light. The rolls are also long and stuff with goodies. Servers are very attentive. Definitely will come back if visiting Vancouver again. read more

Came here because I heard it was solid local sushi chain. Korean-owned and the service was quick, friendly, and very attentive. I was really looking forward to the sushi here, but was quite disappointed. I tried the: Chopped scallop cone (2/5) - the price of $7.50 is more than most other mainland Vancouver spots, but with subpar quality of scallops (it had more of a rougher texture compared to the smooth and buttery scallops I'm used to), slightly overcooked and too much rice, and the seaweed that was wrapped around wasn't fresh or crisp. Aburi Crispy Holic with chopped scallops (2/5) - the price was not listed on the menu and it came out to be the MOST expensive roll compared to the other menu rolls at $18.50. It has deep fried crunchy rice topped with a mediocre amount of chopped scallops, jalepeno and with copious sauces that was just too overwhelming. Ratio wise was off with way too much rice. Mango Smoked salmon avocado (2.5/5) - loosely rolled so it fell apart easily, mango was sweet and very soft almost mushy, and again too generous with the sauces If I had to come back...I heard the grouse mountain roll and jay's roll were a fan-favourite and I'll give those a go instead. read more

We don't come here very often but we usually enjoy the food immensely whenever we do make it over to this restaurant. On this visit my daughter ordered a Dynamite Roll while I ordered an Avokappa Cone for myself and then shared a Crispy Avocado & a Mango Avocado Roll with her. The Crispy Avocado Roll was the one thing that was kinda "meh" this time. It was indeed crispy as the title indicated, and very hot inside. After biting into it though...it was an interesting experience but not something I need to experience again. Everything else was awesome as usual. I especially enjoyed the Mango Avocado Roll. My sister in law had a plain Avocado roll that looked very nicely made. I think I might go for one of those next time! From where we were sitting we could see stacks and stacks of Avocado boxes. I'd never really thought about how much avocado a restaurant might need to keep themselves stocked with. It was interesting to see so many boxes of avocados. I wonder how they manage to keep so many avocadoes from turning brown. The avocado in our sushi was such a lovely, green colour. read more

Always very welcoming, great variety in the menu and service always quick and efficient. They also have a branch on Granville and both are consistently solid, never had a bad meal at either. read more

Decided to check out this spot in North Van. Plenty of street parking around the place. There's a patio section as well as indoors. The service was good all throughout. Ordered a couple of specialty rolls - Grouse mountain roll and the Rachel Mango Roll - let me tell you... it was humongous! They fill it with crab meat (imitation of course ) but you get your money's worth with one roll alone. The tempura was fresh. Ebi sunomono had good balance of sour and sweet. Salmon sashimi was fresh as well. The foie gras nigiri was good, could've been seared a little more though. Overall a good meal experience. I would go back read more

Okay, this was one of our favourite places when we lived in north van. The earthquake today wasn't the only shakey thing about this joint. First off I want to give credit where credit is due. Food was pretty solid all around, I'm a big fan of the sushi pizza or should say I was. The rice has sky rocketed to 23$ for this one item and size and quality had fallen off. Waaaaaaaaaay too much for such a disappointment. I ordered the John roll and the sushi pizza which is listed as an appetizer combined ran me 37$ after tax. Whole both were delicious, neither item wow'd me like a 40$ sushi Bill should. Service was average, room a whole to get anyie to my table and I do t know if this is common but no ice in the water KILLS ME! Tepid water is my kryptonite! Overall id have to give it a 6.5/10 again food was good but way too far overpriced for what it is. No mange this time! read more

Portions of these rolls were massive! I usually don't order special rolls, but I saw that the volcano and grouse mountain rolls were the most popular so I had to try them out. Very well worth your money here and the presentation is on fleek! The chopped scallop nigiri was more finely minced than what I'm used to but the toro was fatty, just how I liked it. Service was quick and efficient. I've never had sushi in North Van before but it's a great location with lots of parking and can get busy at peak hours. Definitely recommend this place for a quick sushi fix to fill you up. read more

If you want a sushi place in North Vancouver this is the place to go. Personally, I would say this is the best Sushi experience I've had while visiting Vancouver, and I've tried several upon my arrival. Not only is the Sushi great quality, fresh and delicious but the service is very friendly and professional. We never had to ask for anything as our server was incredibly attentive. You truly felt like your were eating out, which is the whole point of eating out. You really feel welcome and your business appreciated! The staff always have a smile on their face and the restaurant is spacious and clean..... Finally I found a Sushi place I love in North Vancouver. Very well done! read more

I make a visit to a new sushi place every time we come out to west van or north van. Today, I visited Sushi Umi with mom and dad to try out their bento boxes and special rolls. We got their white roll which was a california roll with chopped scallop on top. I thought it was very delicious with delicate flavours, not oxersauced and a large portion of tempura mixed scallop on top! The teriyaki box B was also quite good with very crispy tempura, well constructed dynamite roll, and beef teriyaki. The only small complaint is that there wasn't rice that came with the box so it wasnt very filling for the price. Lastly, we got the salmon tataki and mango salad. This was my least favourite as the greens were literally drowning in sauce. I liked the salmon and mango portions but there flavours were much too overwhelmed by the pool of dressing on the bottom. Overall, not a bad place for korean styled japanese food with prices that are a bit higher and a salad that needs work. read more

I always order it through a delivery app and their rolls always hit home!! This time we got a sushi pizza, deep cove roll, ebi gyoza, alaska roll, and green salad. Sushi pizza has half tuna and salmon on top, with a super crispy bottom. The rolls were just amazing like always (deep cove roll can be spicy!!). BUT Ebi gyoza could've been crispier; and the salad dressing was a little disappointing. In short, go for the rolls / sushi products here! 100% recommend. read more

This is our weekly go to for sushi take out. We've tried multiple sushi restaurants in the area, quality and selection is balanced well at a reasonable price. Their consistent in the quality too, so it's reassuring to know it'll be good every time. Their special rolls are really good as are the regular ones. Our favorites include the volcano roll, red roll, salifornia, prawn crunch and dynamite rolls. The tempura is fresh, light and crisp, some of the best I've had and the chicken don is good too, tasty. The sushi fish is fresh and good quality. You can order online with an estimated pick up time which is convenient and makes it a whole lot easier. They're popular, so be prepared to wait an hour for pick up at peak times. Some of their items are a little expensive comparatively such as the miso soup. But the special rolls, while pricey, are hearty and over double the size of the regular rolls, so it's filling and worthwhile. Great sushi, consistent and top quality. I would recommend it for sure! read more

I stopped by this great place after a swim race with my friend. The servers were incredibly friendly and the Menu was quite ample with great selection and very competitive prices. The interior was pleasant And our experiences overall fantastic. My friend ordered the for special Umi roll and i had sashimi, seaweed salad and oshinko maki, all delicious. I recommend this place a lot and hope to be back soon. read more

We tried the Volcano roll, house roll, and negi-hamachi roll for takeout on Sunday. They were very busy with takeout orders and the wait time was about an hour at 5pm. The volcano roll was nicely presented and was very filling. House roll included a nice variety of sashimi, and the negi-hamachi roll was very fresh. They appear to be a Korean-run establishment in the likes of Sushi California, Sushi Town etc. but perhaps a bit nicer. Their chefs greeted us through the barriers while we waited our turn to be served by the front waitress. Pleasant experience, I would add this to our list of sushi places in north van. However, if you're looking for more of an authentic, simple Japanese style sushi, this might not be the place for you. read more

This place makes delightful sashimi and sushi in traditional Japanese style and some nice combination of fusion dishes. Prices are reasonable and location is prime at upper Lonsdale. Sushi Umi has a lot of variety when it comes to different types of Japanese food and their specialty sushi rolls. They are also quite accommodating to changes to certain items (with extra charge of course). Their yakisoba with beef is quite bland and although their service staff are friendly unfortunately it's a bit slower service than expected. Of course, if you have great company then time flies by but on somewhat of an empty stomach. Tonkatsu was a smaller portion of sides then I imagined and their vegetable side for the dish was just regular cabbage with mayonnaise on it, which was a bit different than the traditional broccoli, carrot and bean sprouts. Their fish and ingredients seem to be fresh and it's the little things that matter like the glass bottle pops and the flavourful wakame salad. If you like specialty rolls, this is definitely a place to make sure to visit. read more

Very good sushi! The noodles weren't amazing and most of their dishes other than sushi disappoint. But it's totally worth it, the sashimi is so fresh and they have so many roll options! My favorited are the awesome roll and the grouse mountain roll! The food comes ridiculously fast and they have also have options to use soy paper instead of seaweed for your rolls! read more

I absolutely love the food here. Delicious and not overpriced. The dining experience though was annoying. I went with a friend and he got his food about ten minutes before I got mine plus I also had to wait for mine to cool off. I felt rushed. They came by every 4-5 minutes to check on things which is great, a little overkill but it's fine, however RIGHT as I swallowed my last bite, they came over and asked if we wanted the bill. There was no grace period. I felt stressed and rushed so I said sure. Funny, after we paid (I gave a 20% tip too) no one came by to refill our tea or waters during that 20 minute period we spent after we paid. And no, it wasn't busy. read more

Always the best! year after year. Ive never had a complaint and I always come back.

We ordered from Sushi Umi for 6 people. We really enjoyed their aburi platter and sushi platter (not in party trays, but listed in their nigiri combo). There was hair in my roll and every roll was wrapped terrible and dry falling apart. I called to advise them and the guy could care less and said to tell Uber eats. Wish I could give more stars for Umi. Nice staffs with great service customer skills. Fresh nigiri. Their oden-tang (fish cake soup) is one of best one that I have so far. The broth is delightful and well balance with various fish cake type. One thing that I noticed is the friendly chef greeted us on our way out and said thank you. Excellent sushi! I was very surprised at the quality and the cut of each sashimi piece presented. I ordered an Chirashi Don and the 4 piece tuna sashimi, thinking I needed extra sashimi due to other restaurants I've been to back home in Hawaii. I knew I couldn't finish it once the order arrived. The sashimi pieces were cut thick and large, and was very tasty. The prices were also a big surprise once I remembered this was in Canadian dollars. The staff was great, very attentive and accommodating. Too bad I probably can't return since it's in north Vancouver. I highly recommend this Japanese sushi restaurant. read more

Sushi Umi is a Korean runned Japanese restaurant in the Lonsdale North Vancouver area. I came here later in the afternoon during lunch and it there were a few people at the restaurant dining for lunch as well. There was a good variety of sushi, all day boxes, appy and sashimi to choose from. The prices are about $1 -$3 more than your typical sushi town prices which is reasonable considering it is the North Vancouver neighborhood. We ordered the Sam's Roll, Awesome Roll and the chicken teriyaki box. The rolls were fresh and the box was alright - nothing too special but i wished they had sashimi with theor boxes and that it came with rice. Service was friendly and quick for a let weekend afternoon. read more

They raised their prices a while back on their Bento boxes by $5-8 depending on which one. I was a regular ..not no more

I got takeout for my family here. Initially I chose Sushi Umi because they were the only place in the area that had my son's favorite- an avocado mango roll. When I came to pick up, I noticed that the restaurant was bustling, and obviously a local favorite. The ambience is very nice with lots of natural wood and soft lighting. Everything about our dishes was just a little above average. The two special rolls we ordered were beautifully presented. The miso soup had deep fried tofu puffs in it. Dynamite rolls had not one but two tempura prawns! The price point is a slightly higher than nearby sushi joints, but don't be dissuaded! Sushi Umi is worth a few extra dollars. read more

Sushi Tawara is gone.....or is it? Same location. Same menu. Same prices. Still very good sushi but very expensive. I would recommend this place but only if you are looking for something a little out-of-the-ordinary. The menu selections are unique and quite tasty. The decor is nice but a little stark with strips of clear cedar floor to ceiling. The service is definitely lacking. We came in at 3pm. We were on of two tables but our server hardly ever came by. We had dirty dishes on the table the whole time, not good. I'm giving 4 stars for the quality and variety of the food. read more

Great service and good quality sushi. It is a bit on the pricy side, but I did enjoy the meal. We ordered the nigiri & sashimi box and chicken katsu box along with some bluefin, tamago and uni nigiri. Food arrived fairly quickly. Miso was pipping hot. Tempura and spring rolls were nicely fried. The raw stuff was fresh. No complaints on the quality of the food. The service was fantastic. Our server came by regularly to refill water and checked up on us a few times to clear plates. read more

I was told that the sushi in Vancouver is pretty good. I ordered this over the phone and my yelp app was a lil slow so I wasn't able to see pix.. I'm big on pix when I order food. Anyway, I went with the basics and got a rainbow roll.. really tasty, also got the veggie tempura and the California roll... both of those were really good as well. Wasn't impressed with the spicy tuna.. it's a different mix than what I'm used to in the states. It's much more saucy and more sweet than spicy.. I tried putting it on my California roll to disguise the flavor but that didn't work.. I ended up throwing most of it away. Aside from that, the pick up order was ready when they said it would be and the staff was nice. read more

This is an update specifically regarding using the Sushi Umi website to order. I ordered on a Tuesday night around 7pm and the app said that it would take about an hour for my food to be ready. The app usually updates to say my food is done, but after an 1 hour and 15 minutes, the app still said "Preparing". I called and the restaurant said that the food was actually ready. I went to pick up (I live just a few minutes away) and my husband's Pork Katsu was no longer crispy and my tempura was soggy indicating that the food had been sitting for awhile. The app is usually pretty good about updating, but maybe someone was too busy to do it this time for my order. Next time, I'll just phone earlier and ask whether my food is ready. read more

Excellent quality sushi and sashimi, at very reasonable prices! It was my boyfriend and I's first date out-to-dinner, and not only did we feel properly spaced out, the entire restaurant felt well thought out. I order delivery from Sushi Umi probably at least once or twice a week now, with COVID and all, and they always get my order right, which often isn't the case with delivery. I'm pretty fussy about sashimi and not only is it SUPER fresh from here, the pieces are huge! I always get wild salmon sashimi and agedashi tofu and they are always cooked (or raw, as it were) to perfection. The fish is so fresh that I often order the 8 piece (enough for 2 people easily) and eat it the next day. They're also super fast with delivery. Highly recommended. read more
