Best sushi here I recommend the $55 tray feeds up to 4 been coming here since high school days 2009-2014

This review is 100% based on personal experience. I've tried to order from Genghis Khan Kitchen twice in the past. Today was the latest attempt. Each time, I was bumped for catering orders. Today I called in an order for pick up. They said it would be 30 minutes. I agreed and toured around some Alameda shops and spent some money. I got to the place at round 25 minutes hoping I could save 5. They told me it would be another 35 minutes, bc they were working on catering order and didn't have time to prepare my order. I cancelled. I will never try this place again as this was the second time they've bumped me for a catering order. I understand the catering orders command more revenue, but then don't make commitments yore unable to follow through on. This is just one Alamedan's experience, but don't take my word for it. You can go to there website to assess for yourself whether this is a catering company or an actual restaurant. In my opinion, the level service does not amount to anything close to a restaurant or take out experience. I would personally not wasting your time and effort patronizing this establishment. read more

I've been to a number of Mongolian BBQ restaurants and the formula is usually pretty consistent: a large selection of raw vegetables and frozen sliced meats plus numerous sauces which you combine in your own special way and bring to the Mongolian chef at the big round grill, who cooks it all up (usually with a flair not unlike the flashy chefs at Benihana) and hands it back to you. There's usually also a small buffet of Chinese appetizers (and perhaps a 'main dish' or two, usually noodles) but this is clearly just a small sideshow; it's the Mongolian BBQ that's the main attraction. At Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ in Alameda, they seem to have reversed the traditional formula: the main focus is the ready-to-eat buffet. So rather than a large impressive array of raw ingredients (the stuff you'd collect in your bowl to hand to the chef), they offer a rather skimpy assortment - think of a salad bar at a burger joint. Worse, the night I was there for dinner, there was no chef at the Mongolian grill at all, not when I arrived, not while I was dining, not as I was leaving. Genghis (it appeared) had left the building!! On the plus side, the non-Mongolian buffet (dishes ready to be eaten as-is) was much larger than one would expect in such a restaurant, and the selection was rather generous in its diversity. (Perhaps too generous.. the presence of sushi in a Chinese restaurant always gets my "non-authentic" alarm bells ringing.. makes me think of those silly "Asian buffet" restaurants in Philadelphia and other parts of the east coast that offer chow mein and sushi and pizza and lasagna and french fries and cheesecake. Oh!! There were french fries in the buffet here too.. more alarm bells..) A couple of the buffet items were pretty good (tofu+eggplant.. and crispy-skin chicken), others not as good. Despite what I said above about sushi at Chinese restaurants, I tried a couple of pieces -- and found no reason to change my mind that there shouldn't be sushi at Chinese restaurants. Now I hadn't arrived all that late for a weekday dinner (perhaps 7pm), but it appeared to me that none of the dishes on the buffet had been put out recently, and I certainly didn't see anything replenished while I was there. Obviously the biggest concern with any kind of buffet is how long the food's been sitting there (which is why a Mongolian BBQ is usually a good choice, since the raw ingredients are kept cold and then cooked to order in front of you -- but as I said, this Mongolian BBQ restaurant didn't seem to really offer much of a Mongolian BBQ..) So I'm giving this place two stars because it sure could have been worse, but there are lots of decent Chinese restaurants nearby (a couple right there on Park St, quite a few more in West Alameda, and Oakland's Chinatown a bit beyond that). Of course, none of those are Mongolian BBQ restaurants, but as far as I am concerned, neither is Genghis Khan. read more

Lunch buffet here is $6.99 . That should explain the quality. I knew this in advance , and the food met the expectation. Whether I was having tuna, salmon , eel sashimi or some deep fried roll , or the lemon chicken, beef w/ broccoli , egg rolls, tofu with beef, beef fried rice, it's all mediocre, but you get what you pay for, and here you get as much as you want, which was the whole point in visiting this spot. The waitstaff was sweet, they never filled my water, but I didn't care, I was here to fill up. The crowd on this fine Thursday was 50% Alameda High students, 25% thugs, 24% seniors, and 1% Todd B. It was a Saturday and we were on our way to Crown State beach with junior, and I let my husband choose where we were going to have lunch (for once, ha ha). If it was up to me, we'd be at another one of those yuppie joints, said my husband. He used to drag me here for dinner once in a while and it wasn't too bad, but we recently came for the weekend lunch buffet and it was AWFUL. You know when the steam table trays are half-empty (because there aren't many customers, so the cooks don't make much food)? And what is there gets all dried out and gross ... just had take out vegetable chow mien, tofu and assorted vegetable, and vegetable deluxe sushi with anar. first off i couldn't believe how heavy my togo bag was, for $10 each i got 5lbs each, i think cause normally they are an all you can eat buffet during covid they literally give you ALL YOU CAN EAT PORTIONS!! we have enough for 3 more meals! the huge container of thin rice noodles with finely sliced cabbage onions carrots was light and delicious so tasty usually i've gotten those thick chewy noodle but this was a unique mongolian style delicious the equally huge tofu vegetables was all fresh big chunks of celery zucchini broccoli carrots onions the big blocks of tofu were lightly browned woked firm on the outside and firm on the inside the clear thick sauce was light and tasty much better taste than usual chinese. the sushi was once again huge and fresh with big 4 big pieces of of inari tofu skin pockets filled with sticky sweet rice a wonderful vegan feast can't wait to come back read more

This place is surprisingly good. It has that "Oh this is gonna be a crappy buffet" feeling to it when you first walk in, but give it a chance and you're gonna like it. The two things that i think set this place apart are 1) The Shrimps are BOMB! Seriously, you can get shrimp at any buffet, but Genghis Khan has the good shrimp. The kind with the shell and the legs and the eyeballs all still attached. Yeah, BOMB. and 2) They have one of those stations where they BBQ your food right in front of you. Kinda like in the food courts at the malls where you fill your bowl up with meat and then they stir it up on hot plate in front of everyone-- yeah, that have that here at Genghis Khan. It's not like it tastes amazing or anything, but it's just a really cool bonus. If i had to pick a Chinese buffet in Alameda, I'd choose this one. This place was a serious let down. I wasn't expecting much but man, they were really really bad. The food was cold, old and stale. Even the fried rice was awful. The noodles were just covered in oil and parts of the rice were hard. The seafood was barely eatable, the chicken was cartilagey and the beef was tough. My stomach was almost immediately repulsed by it. I had to waste all my food and ended up buying food from Safeway. Don't waste your time or your money. Not worth 14$. I remember driving by as a teenager every week. This place had huge lines at night the first year they opened. It slowly died down but it's still one of my all time favorites! There is a Chinese buffet along with a Mongolian bbq area where you choose your meats and sauces to be stir fried. Talk about variety! Talk about being able to stuff yourself! Remember to save room for the jello. During college I would come here at least once a week. Lunch was $5.75 then! ALL YOU CAN EAT!!! It is located in a prime location in Alameda. My only concern coming here is the parking. Definitely a must try for the locals this is easily one of those places you would want to come back a few times a month. read more

Genghis K K is a great place for takeout. We have been eating here for years and never disappointed. Food is always prepared with tasty, freshness and care, never greasy. Seafood, chicken, all veggies, beef or pork, chow mein are perfectly seasoned and never salty. The cook (owner) is very consistent with all his dishes. I believe food is not prepared with MSG. Be prepared for large portions and leftovers for the next day. Another wow factor from this family eatery we have excellent service from May. She is always cheerful and ready to serve. I've been a part of the Alameda community for a very long time. I have a big history with Genghis Khan Kitchen. I recently found out that my family would always come here on a monthly basis when I was just an infant. Alamedians generally are very familiar with Genghis Khan. INTRO Genghis Khan has been around for a long time. I personally know the owner, who is a very nice, friendly lady that likes to interact with customers and really build a consistent foundation. She is very motivated and enthusiastic about running her restaurant the right way! This restaurant is relatively cheap considering for a buffet. But as they say, you get what you paid for, right? ENVIRONMENT Walking in with first impression, this is a casual setting restaurant with a nice foundation. Nice carpet flooring and large amounts of tables. The staff does a great job keeping the restaurant clean and sanitized. However, the bathroom might need some renovation. Not as bad a public bathroom, but you may lose appetite when you step foot in there. Gross. FOOD - 6.5/10 rate. There's a decent amount of varieties here at this buffet. You get a lot of the typical usuals from a Chinese restaurant. From sushi, chow mein, fried rice, sweet and sour pork, Mongolian beef, egg rolls, won ton soup, clams, to even oysters (only for dinner). Now, the quality of the food is just adequate. Personally, myself, I am not a picky eater. I may not say the same for others who are picky eaters in regards to this restaurant. A lot people slam their reviews against Genghis Khan. But again, you get what you pay for. The food is good, not great. But for the price, it is a go! CONCLUSION If you're casual and hungry, this place is a go! You cannot go wrong with the cheap price. This buffet is excellent and wholesome. Basically, all you can eat Mongolian BBQ (fresh off the oversized wok) and basic sushi selections with salad and soft serve. The clientele seems loyal - the waiters recognized most of the guests. It's a no brainer if you're extra hungry and craving fried noodles! read more

I love this buffet and I love its lunch buffet even more. For under 10 bucks (lunch), you get the best egg fu yong (Chinese style scramble egg with green scallion) in town and all the rest of the food are delicious! The California roll is delicious and makes me happy by thinking 10 bucks probably buys me one order of such rolls in a sushi restaurant? Let's pop another one! The owner couple and waitresses are very nice and they even have a lunch special (a decent size to go lunch box) for the local high school students. (students only). You know everytime there have been an accomplishment or a family loss there's always a restaurant where you and your family celebrated or grieved at? Well, for me, Genghis Khan Kitchen is our place to go since I was in Middle School. My parents really love buffets me, i'm not the biggest fan of it but, i really do like the selection Genghis Khan Kitchen has to offer despite limiting some items they used to serve back when i was still in middle and high school. What i like about this buffet is that they make everything in small batches. All the times i've came here I've always had hot and fresh choices unlike many other buffets with big batches and being heated by a lamp or hot water overcooking the selection. What I least like about this buffet is that they make everything in small batches. A lot of favorites are always running out due to the meals getting made in small batches. Ironic isn't it. My go to dishes are always the shellfish area. I love that Genghis Khan Kitchen serves crab, oysters, and mussels that are done very well in buffet standards. I've never had a bad oyster coming here! My pop's favorite is the salad bar section mainly, the shredded carrots with mayo and raisins. The prices are great compared to what they serve for lunch and dinner. I've never had but, i'm very interested on trying their Mongolian BBQ where you can select what meat and they'll cook it for you right there. Next time I'm going to have to try it. read more

That being said, $6.99 for lunch a really good deal. I go for the sushi, Mongo BBQ, stir fry, and the traditional Chinese buffet items! They have a decent selections on dessert with a lot of variety, and they also have soft-serve! Yum! :) It's nice a spacious inside, good for groups. Service is also good. I went here yesterday for a Chinese New Year party. The place is a bit tiny and only fits about 30-40 people. The selection of food was really small, considering it was a buffet and also had no signs indicating what kind of food was being served! The food seemed like it had been sitting out there for a while and the replenishment wasn't as fast as it should have been. I ate the pineapple chicken (at least i think it was pineapple chicken), sweet and sour pork, wonton soup, crab, fish, fried shrimp, broccoli, sushi, and some kind of beef. The crab was HORRIBLE and the shrimp was really soft..kind of strange. The wonton soup was good and i also enjoyed the pineapple chicken. The sushi was also pretty decent and they had a variety--eel, california role, crab, and some raw fish ones. For the service and price..i guess u can't complain. I don't think i'd come back here though. I think I was expecting more since it's Chinese New Year's and i usually eat somewhere nicer to celebrate this day. read more

Decent Chinese buffet, decent SUSHI, great service... we didn't even get around to having them whip up something on the Mongolian Bbq part (plus not eating meat leaves little for us to want them to cook up). Only downside was the charge to refill drinks (we realized this by checking them out on Yelp beforehand so we skipped sodas all together). No. Absolutely horrid. For that kind of price you can get a better buffet almost anywhere else. It wasn't expensive at all, but the clams tasted like it had been boiled to its core prior to being served so they would have the clam juice for different uses. The oysters did not have any taste besides black beans and everything else was just subpar. You could've gotten the Asian food that you wanted at a better quality. If you need some place to fill you up and just make you feel as if you got your money's worth then please do visit this place, but I have no other reason again in the world to go back to this place. Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnn! I love this place, whenever my brother sails into town every few months the first thing we do is strongarm our way into the Genghis Khan Kitchen (the doors are seriously in need of WD-40 and are pretty hard to open) and if you get there within an hour of closing time they will subtley try to convince you to leave. The easiest way to deal with the situation is to ignore them, fake right and run left for the buffet plates and start piling food on. Afterwards they may not always make sure your drink is full but you can bet that bill will magically shimmy its way into your hand before the fork touches your mouth. Case in point, last night with T-Reg (My new name for Tea and Greg). After aborting our original plans to meet at Sushi House we show up an inappropriate 45 minutes before closing time, even my brother would of refused a run-through with such a small window of time, and he blows up stuff for a living. While waiting for T-Reg to show up I was attacked from all sides by every host, busboy, and waitress, "Is your party coming? How many? We close at 9, you know that right? Eating alone isn't so bad, [insert strained laughter]." Unfortunately for them I was UNFAZED and told them if they didn't leave me alone I was going to eat all the good seafood dishes so they wouldn't have any leftovers to take home (you can bet the farm that they don't throw out all that food at the end of the day). It worked ilke a charm. There are tons of delicious dishes here, but the food was definitely not Mongolian BBQ, I want to go to Mongolia one day and saw no native dishes. This place is a mix of Chinese and Japanese cuisine with a make-your-own dish center where you pick ingredients you want and they grill it up for you. The sushi is really good and they always have the supply replenished, I saw California rolls, Dragon rolls, sashimi, and Rainbow Rolls. They have a pretty big selection of steamed seafood including clams, mussells, oysters, snow crab, and the mighty octopus, which Tea and me indulged in to maintain our super octopus powers. read more

1 star for the 3 very nice waitresses who work here; and 1 star for nostalgic reason. I used to love this place when I was in high school 17 years ago. Back then, my HS buddies and I used to have an eating contest where we try to eat the most food that we can. We'd stack up the used plates and compared them when we could eat no more. The loser have to foot the bill for the group. Price was $4.50 for lunch, and the food was good. Those were the good times. Sadly, this place has gone downhill ever since. The food selection hardly changed in the past 17+ years. It seems like the cooks know only a fixed number of dishes, so that all they make night in and night out. Other AYCE joints try to vary the selection once in a while. But this place have been offering the same exact menu all these years! The selection is extremely limited! They also keep the same old decoration in place. You can tell right away that this joint is at least 2 decades old the moment you walk in. What does changes is the price. It has been steadily creeping up; like 50 cents every 10 months. Lunch is now $8.95, and dinner is $12.95. If you include tax and tip, a weekday dinner will set you back over $16. For the kind of food you're getting, it's a major rip off. I used to go here once every 2 months because of nostalgia. With the recent price increase, I won't be back anymore. It's just not worth it to eat the same tired food, sitting in a sad, dirty restaurant. There's a lot better choices on Park St. I really don't understand how this place can survive. Genghis Khan Kitchen has always been a favoriteof my family and mine, this coming from a CHINESE background! Not only is the price super cheap or a Buffet, but the food selection is just marvelous!!! There is such a wide and delicious variety ranging from Sushi, to fresh sashimi, to soups, to your Chinese dishes, to seafood, to Mongolian BBQ, to delicious, freshly baked desserts! Got kids? The Soft-Serve Machine will keep them satisfied and quiet for the rest of the night. The staff was super friendly here!! This place woulda received 5 stars if they had a larger variety in food, but what they do have somewhat makes up for it. My review is based on being here a couple of times. Apparently, the food they have here varies. I came back here the second time looking for the deep fried, battered shrimps....but they were nowhere to be found! They switch up their food once in awhile, so beware when going back looking for your fav dish. The freshness also was a little lowered and more stale the second time around. You really have to choose the right time and date to get the best food out of them. They even have a bbq Mongolian section. You put everything you want into a small bowl and they're stir-fry it for you and bring it to your table when its done. But somehow, it comes out waaaay greasier than you remembered...where'd all that extra oil come out from? Thankfully, the sushi makes up for a lot of the failed and lack of variety of food. It's probably one of the better Chinese Buffet sushi I've had, though variety is also limited. Mostly just nigiri and simple rolls. What really earn its 4 stars is the price! This is the first place I masticated when I moved to Oakland years ago, still wet behind the ears. What a piece of Sh!t. Everything here sucks: the customers, the interior, the name, and of course the food. They have a massive buffet assortment of worthless Asian fare: fake sushi, crappy dim sum, horrible desserts. The only reason they even get one measly star is because of the old Chinese man who throws meat and veggies on a hot stone slab for you with your selection of sauces. Still horrible.
