First time here, jury out but we where welcomed in. Photos of menu with current prices. Older photos are have a $3.00 difference. Inflation. Place is small and Cash Only sign on counter. Beverages and some beer in the ice cooler. Tables needed to be cleaned off and floors too but I don't mind maybe they had a lunch rush. Food smell decent enough

For lunch on Wednesday I arrived for the day's special - crispy garlic chicken. The chicken had an appropriate amount of crispiness without being oily or dry. The accompanying cucumbers, while simple, seemed quite fresh. Quite notably, the table had black bean sauce that carried such a complex flavor of umami from anchovies that it must have been homemade. No mass-produced black bean sauce would be more ingredient than sauce and that fragrant. The experience of going to Ben's merits mention. Even at 11:45 AM on Wednesday, 15 minutes after opening, Ben's was already full. A quick rapport with David, manning the cashier and front counter, gave me an hour's estimate for the wait. which proved quite accurate. As I waited outside and grabbing some Tsingtaos from the fridge, David, despite the rush, made conversation multiple times (aside from suggesting the beers) and talked about what orders had been lined up and I could piggyback off/change to get my order more quickly. He also discussed what times of the day have off-peak hours and that Wednesday was extra busy w/the daily special. Despite the long wait, I had an enjoyable time, which offsets my normal annoyance. The meal, simple yet fresh and satisfying, accompanied with the homemade black bean sauce, cements Ben's as an indispensable place to me. For those looking for a quick lunch, this most certainly is not the venue for you. However, I quite enjoyed what I consider the epitome of the mom-and-pop experience.

This place is the diamond in the rough I have been searching for! Everything is so overpriced these days BUT NOT HERE. The quality is 5 stars. (the food was cooked perfectly, not overcooked nor undercooked, nothing burnt. Looks fresh and smells tasty!) The amount is 5 stars. (they give plentiful!) The taste is 5 stars. (spicy like it's supposed to be! used with the correct ingredients) The customer service is 5 stars. (great attitude) The wait time is 5 stars. (speedy cook) They have the sweetest guard dog which is a chow chow who tolerated my pom pom lol

I'm captioning with my mouth full. OMG. So good.

Ben's gets review No. 250. I was thinking, I should write about something really special, because 250 is like some crazy auspicious number and it should be my take on something I find really amazing that knocked my socks off then I got hungry and thought of Ben's and love washed over me. Ben's actually is that special. Ben's looks like the kind of place I'd head to straight after my weekly at the methadone clinic. Appearances can be deceiving. For some reason from time to time I forget Ben's exists, all quietly tucked in the Produce Market without real signage hidden unless you're looking for it. I get sucked into my other JL lunchtime favorites. Yesterday they were worn out and I was all "think, Pooh, think" and the dim bulb illuminated for a second and I remembered Ben's. Yesterday I had the chicken with black bean sauce and it took me an hour of causally nibbling at my desk to finish it. Oh mylanta (which I didn't need) was it so good! In a sec I'm going back over for something porky. It makes me happy just thinking about it. Michael says it best: Ben the two of us need look no more We both found what we were looking for With a friend to call my own I'll never be alone And you my friend will see you've got a friend in me (you've got a friend in me) Ben you're always running here and there (here and there) You feel you're not wanted anywhere (anywhere) If you ever look behind and don't like what you find There's something you should know you've got a place to go (you've got a place to go) I used to say "I and me" Now it's us now it's we (I used to say "I is me") (now it's us now it's we) Ben most people would turn you away (turn you away) I don't listen to a word they say (a word they say) They don't see you as I do I wish they would try to I'm sure they'd think again if they had a friend like Ben Like Ben Lunchtime!

My favorites are the Shandong chicken and their signature hand-pulled noodles, so delicious! They are a popular spot so depending on when you go, can be a bit of a wait to get seated. I usually come with my family, and we order damn near everything on the menu. The aunties serving dishes actually laugh when they see how much food they're dropping off at the table. My favorites are the chili oil wontons, hot and dry noodles, bok choy, and General Tso's chicken. The wontons have just the right amount of heat, the noodles are thicccc and chewy, and every dish somehow manages to disappear before we can even think about leftovers. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything you order. One of my favorite parts is watching them make the noodles by hand. Half the restaurant is dedicated to the noodle-making station, while the other half is for seating. It's not a huge dining room, but they do offer the Yelp Waitlist, so you can check the live wait before heading over. The vibe is very, get your food and head out so they can keep up with table space for incoming guests. Always a hit, never a miss.

When we first walked in, no other diners were there which made me a little suspicious. We were promptly seated and offered hot tea though so we were locked in. I initially ordered to seafood claypot but was told it takes 45 minutes...so pivoted to chicken wonton soup (no noodles). My partner got kung pao chicken. while we waited for our food, a handful of people came in to pick up their to go orders, which made me feel better. Another party eventually dined in as well. Fyi the interior isn't much to write home about but comfortable. Then the food came. My soup was freaking delicious! Loads of chicken meat (just chopped up with the bones so be careful for shards), plenty of dumplings, and the broth was sooo good! I couldn't finish and took some left overs home; the next day, my soup coagulated (full of collagen)!! Partner enjoyed their kung Pao chicken but said they'd order something else next time. With that said although Yu Yu is located in a pretty sketch area of Oakland/Berkeley, I would still recommend eating here just for its authenticity. They seem to have a parking lot in the back but we manage to find street parking in the front. You're better off looking for parking in the back than the front due to limited spaces. As for the food it was delicious. For the jajangmyeon you are given the noodles separately from the sauce; this allows you to pour in as much or as little as you want. I personally felt their flavors were mild enough that I poured in the whole thing. As for the tang su yook, it comes with a sweet and sour sauce that's bomb dot com. Even as stuffed as I was with the jajangmyeon, I managed to still find it in myself to finish the last bits of the tang su yook. Highly recommend. The restaurant itself seems to be newly renovated; don't let the rough exterior fool you. The inside was nice and clean but they only have room for four large tables that can fit a parties of 6, and the rest range from parties of 2-4. Last but not least service, they seem to run lean and understaffed but the gentlemen working did his best. Just be mindful if you come at a busy time you may have to wait. Overall looking forward to coming back here!
