I walk in and the man working does not speak any english so he doesnt understand when I say I placed a take out order online, he took a new order and ran my card. When he went in back he started to have one of the worst sneezing attacks I have ever heard in restaurant. I dont want that food and after 2 minutes of it not stopping I just walked out without asking for a refund, I dont want anyone to touch my card in there. "Dragon Village" is one of the oldest restaurants in Alameda's Webster Street Business District. I believe it used to be called "New China Hut." This place was open when the Navy base was active. I haven't ordered food from here in a really long time. It always gets mixed reviews. Their menu features popular Americanized Chinese food. But last night I had a craving for chow mein, and all my favorite Alameda places were closed. I flipped thru the DoorDash App, and it said Dragon Village was open late and had a $8.00-off promo. So I placed a pickup order for Deluxe Chow Mein and Fried Chicken Wings. Service, Grade (5/5): DoorDash hours are wrong. This place was actually closed when I placed my order. Dragon Village could of refused my order and said "we're closed." But they didn't do that, instead they made my food and it ready when I got there. Thank you. Fried Chicken Wings, Grade (3/5): 9-pieces, fresh and juicy wings. Small wings and tasted salty. Deluxe Chow Mein, Grade (2/5): Combination Chow Mein is like a House Chow Mein. It's fried egg noodles with a little bit of everything.....shrimp, beef, chicken, and veggies. The problem was it had a weird taste. Sort of a burnt after taste and a stale flavor. We randomly chose this to give it a try and I personally probably wouldn't have done it had I seen the location prior to ordering. It's not the cleanest place or the neatest place but I thought hey why not try authentic Chinese food. The garlic noodles were gross and didn't have much flavor other than a burnt oil taste. The wontons or Gross and thick with something inside that resembled meat. By far the worst Chinese I've ever had, although the eggrolls were OK. Sad for such a disappointment, but glad we tried! I love the smoky flavor on their chow mein. Again, it has a smoky taste from sauces poured into a very hot wok, not burnt as I've seen mentioned by another patron. They also make delicious seafood dishes. I recently had their # K8 on the menu - sautéed fish, eggplant, water chestnuts and wood ear mushrooms that had a nice salty, vinegary, and slightly spicy sauce. It was delicious! My uncle was formerly in the navy and lived in Alameda. He introduced me to this great hole-in-the wall Chinese restaurant. When I'm in Alameda, I usually make a stop here. I spend a bit of time at the Pacific Pinball Museum and like to have a bit of dinner after work before playing. Last week, I tried out Dragon Village. They have a small parking lot so that's convenient. I walked in and asked for a take-out menu. The woman there told me that they didn't have a take-out menu but I could look at the regular menu. I think that she thought I wanted a menu to take with me. Sometimes, things get confused in the translation. I ordered two of my standby dishes that I like to rate Chinese restaurants with. Tomato Beef Chow Mein and Potstickers. Paid my money and was told 15 minutes. It was a hot day so I stood inside by the front door and did some work on my phone. When my order came out, she brought it to me. I asked if there was a fork and she said everything was in the bag. Service was minimal. It would have been nice to have been offered a glass of ice water since it was so hot out. When I opened my bag to see what I received, I was happy and dismayed at the same time. Dismay, the goopiness of the Tomato Beef. Way too much sauce. There were tomatoes, beef and noodles. Now I realize that every chef and every restaurant has their own style of cooking a dish. I've even had Tomato Beef without any obvious Tomatoes. Needless to say, that dish was a failure. Here, I found myself missing Green Bell Peppers and Yellow Onions. Those two veg can change the texture and flavor of the dish. A bit of crunchy veg tempering the sweetness of the sauce. (sigh) And while I'm whining, I'll complain about the noodles too. As in too thick and not enough. Dismay, the thickness of the Pot Sticker wrapper. And that it was presented in a plastic clam shell without any vent holes cut into it. Part of the appeal of Pot Stickers for me is the crunchiness of bottom of the wrapper contrasted to the tender body of the rest of the wrapper. Even if cooked properly, the crunchiness will go away if the Pot Stickers are placed into a plastic clamshell, sometimes even if there are vents cut into it. The reason is that the heat of the Pot Sticker will create enough steam to soften itself. Too bad too because the filling was delicious. Happy, instead of just dropping in a packet of soy sauce, Dragon Village dropped in a split package. One side contained Hot Chili Oil and the other contained a mixture of Soy Sauce and Vinegar. I've driven by this spot a million times and finally ordered (looks like they do pickup only). Had a craving for Dim Sum type food in the afternoon, not ideal timing but Dragon Rouge Bistro had a collection of dumplings to satisfy my craving. Ordered: - potstickers: thick wrapper gave it a homemade feel. Yummy filling, not as crisp as I like but I will order again - egg rolls: just the way I like them. Crispy and golden with the soft filling. Generic seems rude, but it's exactly the way I love my egg rolls. - steamed bbq buns: I'd pass on this next time. They tasted and felt not as good as they should. -sui mai/shrimp dumplings: not sure which one I'm thinking of... looked like sui mai but had a lot of shrimp. The shrimp were bay shrimp, which I'm really not a fan of. The other one was good. I'd totally gamble again. One was really good and the other not so much because I don't like bay shrimp. - walnut shrimp: perfect! This is what I want when I order walnut shrimp. Some say too dressed, I say perfect! Great flavor and the walnuts were perfectly glazed. - fried calamari: strips, not rings. Really tender and huge portion! - salt and pepper fish: hidden gem. I'm coming back for this. The dry braised green beans were so good. Good vegetable chow mien & general's chicken (it had jalapeños which is not common but was good). I really liked the fried rice, but did not like the chicken in the rice and would probably try with a different protein. Crab Rangoon was not good. read more

If anyone has lived in Alameda for at least 30 years, then you would know this place used to be called China Hut. My father used to only order two things from here: Shrimp fried rice and Shrimp chow mein. Signature two basic dishes that my father, mother, and I from as early as I can remember, loved. The orginal people did move on, and new owners bought the place. It was not called Dragon village, intially after China Hut. During my college years, when I went in and ordered food, I honestly was disappointed, because the same Shrimp fried Rice and chow mein of yester year that my father used to buy me dramatically changed. It didn't have that nice smoked taste. It was very plain and bland. I gave up on it shortly thereafter. But I received one of their flyers when another owner takeover happened. I looked at the menu, and the one thing of all that stood out? Spicy Chicken fried rice! Talk about hitting lightening in a bottle. I even occasionally order a platter for my church to eat, and they love it. Most of the rice, noodle and pan fried dishes, you can request spicy and they will do it, no problem. Some of my staple dishes to order from here: Spicy combination Chow mein Spicy chicken fried rice Spicy chicken or beef pan fried noodle honey walnut prawns Wor Won ton soup. I have been ordering from the same guy since about 2012. Just a few days ago, I didn't even order the spicy chicken friend rice, but since he recognized my voice on the phone, and in spite the fact I never ordered it, he still accommadated it for me. You know what people say about those hole in the wall type places: some of the best food you will eat come from these type. Please try them. They normally try and keep the same cook there all the time, but like most establishments out there, substitudes and lack of staff on some days will cause some customers to say the food tastes a little stale, etc. It happens. They have not done dine in, since the pandemic. So please make sure that you show up in the time frame the person on the phone provides, otherwise, it might be sitting there cooling down. I ate at this place since 1972 when I was in the service, five different dishes for 2.5. Through the years the food has been consistently good. Today, I ordered the same five dishes I've ordered through the years and was shocked that they charged me 108.00 for the food. I got home and tasted the bland "food" I paid too much for and my admiration for this place went down the toilet. The food, chow me in, deluxe fried rice, honey walnut prawns and potstickers had absolutely not taste. I, reluctantly, do not recommend this place to eat. Horrible! My brothers friend ordered party tray take out for his girlfriends birthday. He ordered Mongolian beef and seafood fried rice. So food arrived and all I could say was Jesus Christ great balls of fire. 80% of the Mongolian beef was just onions. And I'm telling you I love onions and tend to overuse it causing my friends to make a joke of me by saying if I wanted to make onion babies by using too much onions whenever I cooked. Now the Mongolian beef was literally Mongolian onion and has too much black pepper in it. Seafood fried rice were dry tasteful I don't know how to describe it. A menu from Dragon Village was dropped in our driveway a few weeks ago. Since I was doing a few check-ins on some of the businesses on Webster Street, I decided to stop in here, order lunch to go and walk home. Dragon Village is a small restaurant with an extensive menu. The restaurant can probably hold about 15 to 20 people. Service is a little slow, and I guess it's because there is only one cook and the hostess/waitress taking order and serving the diners. Looking over the menu, I have to again chuckle about items associated with my name (such as the monchong fish at Cuatro's in Kihei - Chong is my last name...lol). Dragon Village has a Carol Style Signature Dish - I kid you not. This dish consists of chicken stir fried with zucchini, string bean, water chestnut, carrot in Carol's Special Hot Garlic Sauce - cost $7.99 excluding tax. While wating for my order, husband texted me and said he wanted something with noodles. I ordered chicken chow mein for him. The Carol Style Signature Dish was too spicy for me (muy caliente). Most of the vegetables were pretty good, except the string green beans (overcooked - not crunchy). The portion was huge and it was piping hot (temperature). The only way I could curtail this spicy dish was to let it cool down and eat it with steamed rice - slight improvement - but not enough to give this place a 4 star. Fifteen dollars minimum for delivery. I don't believe they deliver food outside of Alameda. Credit card is accepted (VISA, MC, Discover), but there is a policy on that - $15 minimum purchase; otherwise, there is a 10% fee tacked on for purchase under $15. The food is okay - nothing extraordinary. I might go back to try the G Man Fried Rice (shrimp and crab meat). Price is inexpensive. read more

Ordered deluxe chow mein and jumbo deep fried prawns to go. Haven't ordered from the restaurant in several years after the original owners left. The deluxe chow mein was really good. The deep fried prawns on the other hand were terrible. The coating was heavy and dark you would have never known there was any shrimp under all the heavy coating. Deep fried shrimp or prawns should have a light almost tempura coating so you can taste the delicate shrimp. I will never order the jumbo deep fried shrimp again. They were expensive too. read more

Finally, it arrived 30 min late. The General Tso's chicken was all sugary and tasteless -even the cat wouldn't eat it. This place consistently gives me overcooked food probably because their delivery is really slow and their solution to this is to throw finished food back in the fryer just take a look at the picture it's very easy to tell when a food has been recooked after being sauced. It's hard as a rock and it seems like the mush inside isn't even alway chicken I broke open 5 of these and 2 distinctively looked like chicken and the others look like the picture... mush. They are very obviously giving people half fillers half chicken. This place is a scam. Update: I ate 1 piece of chicken it didn't agree with me so I did not continue. 45 min later I threw up and now I'm hungry, pissed off, and can't eat because I'm sick. Pleasantly surprised.. I was in town for one night and this place was close to my hotel and had decent reviews. I wasn't expecting much but had a great meal. Upon searching for some other chinese places in Alameda, I found all these great reviews. I had seen this place many times in its old state while pumping gas at the Shell station across the street. I was so excited that I decided to try it for tonite. On my way home I stopped in. The guy there was great: very friendly, warm. I ordered some of our usual stuff: pork with garlic sause, mongolian beef, chicken with eggplant, a hot & sour soup and a bbq pork won ton soup and a chinese chicken salad. Plus they would deliver it all. I didn't have to wait. It was about 3.40 and delivery starts at 4. He estimated the food to arrive at 4.30. And it did! Well, I'm very sad to say whereas the food wasn't really bad, it was just bland. It didn't have enough flavor to be bad. The hot & sour soup was an exception. Although one of the better h&s soups I've had, it actually didn't need addition of pepper or vinegar. The wan ton soup was ok, once one added hot chili paste and soy sauce, but the won tons had not only broken apart, the noodle/dough was just a mush. The 3 main dishes were ok, if you have a mid-western palate. The chicken salad had iceberg lettuce, fried chicken, and some sort of lemony dressing which was also bland and not very "Asian" or "Chinese". (Maybe I'm unfair here comparing it to Goi Ga/Vietnamese chicken salad.) All in all I would give this place only 2 stars were it not for the friendly service and delivery. To be fair we have both been coming to Dragon Village for 10+ years (most of which before we knew each other!) so maybe my review is biased, and so let bias be: I still love their food. Consistently over a decade they have been my go-to place even after trying all the other local places (including a couple dozen in China Town Oakland). Portions are generous, and this is the only place I have found crispy enough Orange Chicken and Sweet & Sour Pork to break my former vegetarianism (yes we're complicated). Very very bad experience i went in for my first time since china house is closed down! Went right after work called and ordered for pick up i asked if he took apple pay as a payment if not i was stopping by a bank he said he did. Perfect Chinese take out for a Friday night spent in. Our favorites are the General's Chicken and Egg Flower Soup! We've tried a few of their fried food options like the Fried Prawns & Fried Calamari, they're just alright. They always give us more than enough food & we usually have extras for lunch the next day. $20 and two full tummies. The staff is very friendly, they always have our order done when they say & it always tastes great. Last night my fiancé orders about $80 worth of food & the sad part is we've been coming here for years & it's ALWAYS our first choice! This morning I go to heat up the left overs, me & my children start eating & I see what looks to be a sautéed onion in my garlic sauce chicken (& I ordered it without vegetables so I thought that was odd) but low & behold it was a ROACH ! I'm so disappointed, cause this is the ONLY PLACE I eat my Chinese food from !! I called Alameda County Health services & already filed my complaints & I have pictures. When my fiancé called they had the nerve to ask if we wanted more food, my fiancé refused & they told him to just return the food. We plan on bringing what is left & receiving a FULL REFUND!
