I had my worst repair experience in this shop. I suspected coolant leak since I was seeing some greenish stain once in my garage. One repair shop said they did not find anything wrong with my car but I wanted to get second opinion to make sure. I was fooled by Gene's all 5 star google reviews and took my car there on a Friday. The owner asked me to leave the car and come back in the afternoon. When I went back he said they did not have sufficient time to go over all. He asked me to bring the car on Monday and he kept telling them I should inform him if I see red leak which I never had. The next day, when I pulled my car out of my garage I saw large amount of blood red leak where I parked. It scared me and I did not drive my car until I took it back to them on Monday. This time he said I had a transmission leak and the bill was over $1100. I felt trapped. They broke my car to overcharge me. I never had red leak until I took it to them. Within a year I had red leak again. When I called them to see it it would be under warranty repair I was told and yelled at that it was due to not driving the car much and due to leaving it in hot garage. I believe that all these good reviews they have are fake. I hope they do not enjoy money they make in such dishonest way. This was 4-5 years ago and it still upsets me. read more

In the beginning in 2008 my wife needed a reliable automobile mechanic shop to maintain her vehicle and by word of mouth found this business. Gene took very good care of us until his retirement (2 years ago now??). Now it's late 2025 and it's time to go somewhere else. This is just my opinion based on what happened to us first back in the fall of 2024 where we requested some troubleshooting with a long-term engine coolant leak (performed a pressure test). Mechanic didn't see any evidence of any leak. Fast forward to this year where we only needed an oil change. Lucky for me I had a brief opportunity to speak with the mechanic and he said, "were you aware that you had an engine coolant leak?" (that mechanic doesn't work there anymore - not sure why). Long story short - turned out to be a component (Engine Coolant Control Value) of the Powertrain which lucky for me was still under warranty (ends April 2026). Had this leak been identified last year I would have at least 18 months of warranty on the replacement part. Gene has many good reviews and I'm glad for the new owner however for me failure was not an option for something so easy. Advise to the "front desk", don't tell the customer that you'll put together an estimate and observations of the area of the leak and not follow through. Also, maybe the new owner should change the name of the business to protect the innocent. For a while were treated very well however now is the time to simply say "YOU'RE FIRED".... read more

My check engine light came on, was throwing a coolant code. Took it here to diagnose the issue because it's close to home and has great reviews. Honestly I can't blame the guys it's just business at the end of the day. But I was charged a $75 diagnostic fee and all they did was clear my OBD codes. If I had known that's all the work they were going to do I would've cleared it myself, or asked them to just do a thermostat replacement and not bother asking for a diagnosis in the first place (since that's usually what the problem is with that type of code). If you're gonna charge for a diag, maybe actually diagnose the problem? They said it would be used as a credit for my next service since they didn't actually perform any work, just call them if the CEL came back on. Which it did. Then when I called about it they said they would have to charge me another diagnostic fee if a different code presented. Why are we charging diagnostic fees to read OBD codes, and why would I even take the chance? Took it somewhere else, coolant thermostat was replaced, no diagnostic fee was charged, and no more CEL. $75 may not seem like a lot to many people, but it's the principle for me. read more

I had a great experience at Gene's. I needed wheel bearing hubs replaced and I had my own parts. They installed them for me and everything is working great. My 02 Camry was running fine AND THEN on free coffee day in Dunkin Donuts drive thru started idling really rough! Didn't know if I was going to make to the window let alone home! The check engine light went to orange and started blinking! OMG!! Didn't want to blow engine! Wasn't running hot! Made it home! Oil fine! Googled and called around. I have been in the area for over a decade and have yet to find anyone I would be willing to go back to; until today. I had some brake work that was needed and Gene took care of me at a fair price in a more than reasonable amount of time. But that's not what is important here. I got to spend a few hours in his lobby while he assisted other customers; explaining things multiple times that should have only been explained once. offer deals and discounts to get people on the road in the most efficient way possible for all concerned, giving suggestions that would get people back driving that profited him in no other way other than karma. I love this place. I've had them do a lot of work on my car in the past year or two since I moved to Arizona. It's an old 91 Camry and not all shops know what to do when I call them! Genes autoworx always has good prices. I am so wary of being taken advantage of so I always research my problems first and check various sources for the quotes I'm likely to get. This place consistently offers reasonable rates or even lower than what I'm expecting. Sometimes it's just $20 cheaper but sometimes it's $50-80 cheaper than other places. It makes a huge difference when you don't have a lot of spare cash just laying around. Another huge plus is that they given me a ride home and picked me up later on, to get my car. Most recently I had overheating issues with my car so I dropped it off the next day. When I got off work, I got a call from them saying it was just a loose hose and there was no charge! They also topped up my coolant at no cost to me. They've been good to me since day one. read more

Why does this place have 5 stars? And why are so many of his reviewers out of state? Who brings their car from New York to have it fixed by Gene? I went to Gene's shop with my car and he did incorrect work which did led unnecessary work, charged me more than the dealer would have, tried to milk 850 $ for a new computer (ECU), and pushed me into taking the car to the dealer to have it fixed. The dealer fixed it by fixing the wiring that Gene did wrong to begin with. ================= The whole story ====================== The story started when I got Crankshaft and Camshaft sensor error codes on my Nissan Altima 2005. I bought the parts from Autozone and replaced them myself. It turned out that after spending 5 hours working on getting to a hard to reach sensor, it didn't fix the problem so I decided to take the car to Gene to have it fixed. He proceeded re-wiring a connector that would no longer clip in after I undid the crankshaft sensor. That didn't fix it. He told me the sensors I got from Autozone were no good based on research he did online in auto forums and that I needed OEM sensors. I let him do the job. He replaced the sensors with the dealer sensors and the problem didn't go away. Next he checked all the wiring for which he charged me 120$ diagnosis fee (dealer charges 90$). He told me it all checked out fine and that I needed to replace the computer (ECU) for something like 850 dollars. So I took the car to the dealer to have the computer reprogrammed because usually computers don't just break to the point of no way to repair them. He did encourage me to have the dealer replace the computer so I give him that. Reprogramming the computer didn't fix the problem so I gave the dealer another 90 for diagnosis of the problem. The dealer fixed the problem immediately after for 40 dollars! It was the wiring that was bad which Gene redid, and diagnosed for 200$. Total rip-off Gene. Stay away. If you can't do the job yourself, take it to your dealer. lesson learned for 370$ fee from Gene, 210$ from the dealer, 70$ in parts from Autozone, 5 hours of time wasted, frustration, and inconvenience of having to ask friends for rides for 5 days. Ultimately I took the car back to Gene after the dealer fixed it so that he can see what the dealer did. He refunded me 203$ which included diagnosis and CKP sensor replacement sensor. I'm still down 360$ though for the other stuff he did and the money I had to give to the dealer to diagnose, do what Gene did again and re-program the ECU which Gene said was bad. He also said that I didn't deserve part of the refund because I was the one who broke the connector I had him fix in the first place. The good part is that I got to hang out with my friend who helped me fix it for the 5 hours. read more

When my car started flicking on an off as I drove down Southern I obviously had a few moments of "freak out". But I quickly pulled it together, turned on Hardy and found my Mr. Right. Or Mr. Mechanic? Or would that be my Mechanic Right? Anyhow, you get the point. I've been to Gene's Auto Workx once before when my AC was clicking and clacking but not actually blowing out cold air. In less than a business day it was back out and blowing cold - and for less than $150. This time though - I was concerned. It could be anything from a loose connection to an Alternator. Any other place I went to would have tried to upgrade my issue and it would have been an easy couple hundred. Not Gene. $25 later I'm coasting down the road. As if this wasn't good enough - my favorite part is always Gene's wife who manages the office and drives me back to my office while the work is being done. Sweet lady. She told me how Gene had worked for a nearby Gas Station that did car service as well for almost 20 years when they decided they were closing the shop. He wasn't willing to give up yet and wanted to be in the same area so he could keep helping folks who'd come to count on him. Thus their spot currently in the middle of a rather industrial office area. Sweet AND convenient. I absolutely recommend Gene and his team for wonderful, honest service. read more

I went in with a quote for two things to get done in my car. I also had an estimate as to the amount of time to get the work done at about 3 hours. Now this time might have just been a miscommunication so I'm not going to slam anyone for that. As long as the work is done it's ok. I'd say that's worth half a lost star, but in this case I won't even do that. You were also late to your own place of business which had 3 people waiting outside before I even got there 3 minutes after you opened only to see you stroll up about 10 minutes late. Still no loss of star we all have complicated lives, heck maybe you had car troubles? The reason you get dropped one star is you failed to do both things to my car that I asked to have done. Yes this was a miscommunication on your part. Yes I stated what needed to be done twice before setting the appointment and when I got there, perhaps you didn't hear me because you were in a rush after being late? I dunno. The other bad thing is this could have easily been cleared up with a one minute phone call and yes I gave you my cell phone number. The other thing that made you lose a star was the quote vs the actual charges. I had two things that were supposed to be done, and only one done but had a bill like both things were done... Why? You charged me 60 bucks to diagnose the other problems with my car? I told you about two other things that were going on with my car and asked if you could check it out....You charged me 60 bucks to do that? Who needs to call to get the go ahead to do more work when you simply charge 60 bucks to figure out if you even need to do more work. And I really doubt it took you 45 minutes to figure it out, you charge 80 dollars an hour right? I could have recreated the noise in a minute and a scan at autozone for free in about 3 and a internet search on the code in minutes. Most cool mechanics don't charge you to tell you what else needs to be done, hell even jiffy lube the antichrist doesn't lol. Long story short, super shady...you knew I had a certain amount of money to spend that day and despite not getting all the work done because of a miscommunication on your part you made sure to charge me the same amount regardless. Well that is worth another lost star and frankly 2 but I won't even do that. It is worth a lost costumer and referrals. Had you not charged me that 60 bucks you'd have gained 700 in a few weeks. I'm a loyal customer and a sales person when it comes to good mechanics I'm a chiropractor lol I tend to see a lot of people who need mechanics. I found my last mechanic on yelp and I was with him my entire time in the state, 3.5 years. I drove 45 minutes to see him because he was ethical and did good work. I won't can you because the work you did was good. Your prices were good without the add ons, and you made recommendations which are honest. I think average is fair because of the lack of communication on your part and the bump up on price to make your quota for the day. I'd expect that from an average mechanic because let's face it good mechanics are hard to find but I would not expect that from a great mechanic who I would send everyone I know to. I set my appointment with a new mechanic next week, pretty much the same price you quoted but hopefully without the bump up, better communication, punctuality, and ethics. read more

Were it not for your commentary, I never would have known Gene's existed. And I live in Tempe, for crying out loud. Now let me get straight to the point: I will be taking all of my car-related business to Gene's Auto Worx from here on out. Disgusted by reliably horrendous service from my dealership, Pep Boys, Big O Tires, (insert other crappy chain/massive conglomerate here), and the like, I was desperate for someone - anyone - who would do what they said they would for my vehicle, do it well, and treat me like a real live human being in the process. That person is Gene. Despite having a busy, busy morning, he squeezed me in when I explained that my steering wheel was shaking so bad it felt like it would spin off and harpoon into a passing vehicle. Despite me being female, he talked to me like I really did have the capacity to comprehend something car-related beyond the words "air freshener" and "the shiny part that goes here", and explained exactly what he saw and would do with my car - before he even did it. Despite spending a total of approximately 2 hours on my vehicle (over the span of 2 days...I won't go into details right now), he charged me less than $50 for what needed to be done. Gene is remarkably honest, takes obvious pride in his work, knowledgeable, and the owner of my new favorite car shop. I'm actually very conflicted in writing this review, as this is the kind of place I will grow to appreciate and love so much that I only want people who will do the same to patronize it. First of all, thank you fellow Yelpers, because I found this great mechanic from you! Gene was great- he checked out my car thoroughly and made recommendations. He didn't try to hard-sell me and he didn't just "fix" what I was guessing might be wrong - both of which have happened to me plenty in the past. He also didn't rip me off, which I really appreciate. His pricing was totally fair and he had all of the work done in one day like he said he would. Not at all like the Hyundai dealership who kept my car for three days and never did fix my gas gauge! But you guys - after checking my car and before I even knew when I'd have a day I could leave it with him for the repairs, it overheated on me and I was stranded at a gas station. HE CAME TO ME IN 10 MINUTES and got me back on the road. It was a seemingly simple fix but he dropped what he was doing and came straight over. WHO DOES THAT?? Customer service FTW! Thanks to Gene (and a new set of tires from Discount) my 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT runs like a brand new car. Now, I usually only review restaurants but I absolutely have to nod my head over in Gene's direction. This place saved me hundreds of dollars on my first visit. I needed a new pressure hose for my power steering and I was about to go out and do it myself after getting a rough estimate from Midas. Midas had the audacity to want to charge me $80 to $160 for the hose and $50 to $100 for putting it in. Oh, and let's not forget about a mandatory power steering flush that would have to take place for only $69. The hose costs $12.99 through Autozone, I checked. Livid, I waited for the estimate from Gene, who I had called earlier, after he told me he'd call me back after getting a price together. When he promptly called me back, I was told it would be around $104 for parts and labor. $104!! I brought my Jeep in almost immediately and dropped it off. While they were working on it I got a call from Gene letting me know that my radiator hoses were going bad (something I already knew). I figured it would cost me at least another $150 but I was willing to do it. It was then that Gene told me that it would be around $80. Amazed, I told him to go for it! For less than $200 I was out of there feeling safe to drive my car. I have never ever felt so good about a car shop. I want Gene to have all the business he desires and deserves, and I recommend this place over and over again! Thank you to Gene and your crew! I always have had to buy cheaper used cars due to finishing a long degree, and for the last 10 years have not had anyone in my life (i.e. my mechanic dad) to help me with them. I always have felt ripped off or taken advantage of in some way or another, because I know enough to know when something is not right, but not enough to know what the heck it is. This is the only guy I will ever trust with my car as long as I live in Phoenix. I've compared his services to a variety of shops around Phoenix on 3 occasions, on jobs ranging from 50 to $3000 on my money pit Saab. Fast, Efficient, Honest. I drove in with a front-end steering problem. Several mechanically-inclined friends suggested that I would require a new steering rack. It was thus with great concern that I pulled my ailing car into Gene's parking lot. Long story short: in two days, the man had my car back on the road. Though he could easily have convinced me to pay for the new steering rack, Gene found that he could take care of my steering problem by tightening my power steering belt. It's rare to find a mechanic who would turn down a thousand dollar job in favor of the honest answer to a customer's problem. I needed to find a local mechanic close to my office so I could get a ride back and forth. My 2004 Chrysler needs a lot of repairs, so I decided to try out Gene's to see how well they would do with an outer tie rod end replacement. I called, on a Wednesday, shortly after they opened and asked if they had time to do the job. I was told that if I brought it down ASAP, they could have it done by the end of the day. Woo-hoo! Gene's is located on the west side of the road behind the Kalil office. Look for 2730 and he's right behind it. The waiting room was clean and comfortable looking, but I didn't have to wait. Drop-off was super fast. I filled out some minimal paperwork, gave him my key and off I went. My ride was leaving around 3PM, so I decided to call to see if my car was ready. It was! A few minutes later, I was back at Gene's. Checkout was fast and easy. The cost? It cost a little over $300 to replace both outer tie rod ends and perform an alignment. I actually shopped this around and this is competitive. It's not the cheapest price I found, but it's the least expensive for any five-star mechanic that I've seen! The car drives great; the shimmy is gone, the steering is tight and I had forgotten the simple pleasures of a proper alignment. May I just say that Gene and his staff is the FIRST honest, friendly and talented mechanics/staff around? You have no idea how nearly impossible it is to find mechanics who won't wring your pockets empty. Wait. Yes, you do. That's why you're looking through Yelp to find one such mechanic(s). Look no further. Gene's Auto Worx is the place to go. I've lived in Phoenix for 11 years and went through 4 cars. I shouldn't be proud about this but I have amazingly bad automotive karma. If it's not an accident, it's a freak breakdown of my cars. Mechanic after mechanic, I had to pay through the nose, borrowing money left and right just to keep a car running. Well, a month ago, my Honda CR-V started overheating. Every time I filled the radiator and the reservoir with coolant, I'd find it empty a few days later. After several coolant bottles, I took it to Auto Zone, and the guy there determines that the radiator was cracked and show me this MICROSCOPIC crack in the plastic part of the radiator. A few days and 3 different shop quotes later, I bought a brand new radiator at Auto Zone and replaced the radiator with my buddy. A month later, the car all of a sudden started sputtering on the freeway and I was riding Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I took the car to Gene's for the second time (the first was only to change a tire), and he was honest with what he could determine and what is still hidden. He determines that the 3rd cylinder was misfiring, and that he thought it might be a broken spring, adding that he cannot guarantee that's the cause unless he took the engine apart, all the while explaining this without sounding condescending like so many other mechanics. He said it may cost up to $1500 to repair but he had to know exactly what was wrong to give me a better idea of the repair cost. It's my nature to get a second (or third) opinion so I took it to AAMCO Transmissions in Tempe because they had high ratings too. Well, they checked (without taking the engine apart) and basically told me it would be better to just stick in a used engine in my car and that it would cost $3500 at the very least. I took my car back to Gene's and told them to go ahead and take the engine apart to diagnose the problem. A few days later (Gene's is very busy with repeat customers and new customers so it took a few days) turns out, one of the valve heads in the third cylinder was chipped. Again, Gene kindly explained possible causes of this particular type of chipping. A few days later, I got my car back running like new. He said it was likely that when my car overheated and I ran with it in that condition, it melted a rubber part in the cylinder so when the valve came down, it blew out. He gave me the broken valve as a souvenir and it cost a little over $1300. Sure, it's not chump change, but imagine if I went with the other shop who had high ratings too! Gene said I was lucky this time though that the engine wasn't shot. I'm lucky I found a mechanic I can rely on. Went to the bank to get the money to pay Gene and recommended him to the teller, who promptly took down Gene'es Auto Worx's number and address. read more

Having moved to Arizona just last year, I was worried about finding a good, honest mechanic like I had back east. I jumped on Yelp and to my surprise I find Gene, right down the street from me! I called Gene a couple days ago to talk to him about getting my 75,000 mile service on my Pathfinder and some new Michelin tires. Gene right up front told me that the tires would probably be cheaper elsewhere, but that if I wanted him to do them, he'd be more than happy to help me out. He spent at least 10 minutes on the phone with me going over the different tire choices and the pros and cons of each. Even though the Michelin's were the most expensive, I decided on them and made my appointment for the next day. Upon arrival the very friendly receptionist greeted me and asked me to fill out a very simple form with my information and a description of the work I needed done on the Pathfinder. I had the Nissan recommended 75k service done, as well as an alignment, an a/c check, and of course the new tires installed. I dropped the keys off and came back 7 hours later. Gene thoroughly went over everything that was done to my truck and gave me a very detailed invoice listing out every part used and service performed. Based on past experiences, the prices were very reasonable and may have even been a bit better than what I would have paid for similar service in the past. The real satisfaction came when I drove off though, the truck runs like a brand new vehicle! The new tires give me an AMAZING ride, and its perfectly aligned, no more pulling to the side. Also some weird noises that I had forgotten to mention to him are now mysteriously gone. Who knows what kind of magic he worked under the hood but I couldn't be happier! I plan on moving up to Scottsdale in the near future, but I will still bring my truck down to Tempe to have Gene take care of it, amazing service!!! Thanks Gene!!! read more
