My review is for staying at this location. This is a small historic inn. So to be clear, I am not talking about sweeping master bathrooms and constant upgrades and renovations. The best part of staying here, and I have been a repeat guest when I am in the area, is the very personal service that creates a community kind of atmosphere. They really make the guest feel that they are returning home. I have also met some great regular clientelle here so they do attract some great people as well.
The rooms are charming suites. Each one is unique. I would recommend inquiring if you want one with a larger bathroom or more privacy etc.
The owner, Patrick, is extremely personable and hospitable. He is truly hands on and makes a point of attending to guests in a very positive professional manner. He is super responsible and responsive to his clients.
Catherine (tall elegant blonde) is an inn keeper/host and she is the very best at what she does. She really creates a gracious ambiance at this hotel and she has a lot of personality. She just lights this place up.
I personally have always enjoyed the staff at this hotel, from the bartenders to the servers. I did notice in a review below that there was a comment regarding "Francesca" indicating that she was not the most welcoming staff/server at breakfast. Unfortunately I do have to agree with that reviewer, so I would like to iterate on that. While I do not think this is extreme by far, there is a level of "gruffness" with this particular staff person that does not suit the inn. Furthermore, in what I would consider a very inappropriate manner, she regularly and directly indicates tipping to the guests when she presents one's check out bill at breakfast. In my mind this is inappropriate for a continental b & b inn, this is by far not a "full" breakfast especially in the manner in which she in particular "hosts" it. I noticed her doing this (tip indication) with all of the tables and I have never noticed any other staff do this, if they have done it, they were far more charming and subtle about it because I do not remember it. (As a side note, the last time that I was there and "Francesca" staffed breakfast, the fruit salad was definitely not fresh and my "croissant" was still partially frozen/uncooked inside. Honestly it's not really a big deal as I am not a huge breakfast person, just a note here that her assertiveness for tips was disproportionate to the "meal" and service), As I hope is universally customary, I ALWAYS tip housekeeping staff directly in the room by leaving cash or handing it directly to the house keeping staff personally, so this particular directive to "leave tips on the hotel bill for house cleaning AND BREAKFAST SERVICE" seems rather tacky. By the way not only have I never seen Catherine do this, I have also never felt that I could not have an additional item when Catherine tends.
Regarding dining, I have had mixed experiences over the years, I have gone with family and friends and while I do not make it a destination restaurant when I'm in the area (only because there are so many incredible restaurants to try in that vicinity), I would certainly recommend giving it a try, it has several very lovely dining rooms. We've all had some really good things and sometimes not so good. Use your own discretion, if the place is packed on a Saturday night full of wedding guests dining, then maybe wait for a low key day to check out their menu. Ask the servers/bartenders for recommendations if you want. I prefer to go out to other restaurants in the area, but we usually have a drink at the bar and that sometimes includes a bite. The outdoor garden is really pretty in nice weather and they do always seem to make an effort to improve things. They seem to really care.
A huge plus is that when they have a wedding, which they often do because it's so pretty, it does not impede the hotel guests experience. They keep things under wraps so that the atmosphere is fun (I've even seen some great music in the bar) but it's not an all night blow out kind of place. They wrap things up early and you can still get some quiet/peace and a good night's sleep.
Everyone has an off day and certainly certain glitches and mishaps can color one's stay, but I would highly recommend giving this inn another chance if there had been a slight unfortunate experience. Sometimes things occur that influence a stay that are not of the hotel's doing. This occurred to me only one time when I was there and two young women were not only having a loud business meeting at the quiet morning breakfast, they then proceeded to include a very loud skype meeting over lap top with a superior. It was bizarre and distasteful and totally ruined breakfast, but it was an unfortunately obnoxious client, not the hotel's fault.
Overall this is is a very unique and charming place in an area that is all to full of very anonymous hotels. I do highly recommend it! read more
