I am writing this regarding the review by Shayne F yesterday. It's unfortunate for Jess & his team so I felt it needed explanation. We have a rental in San Jose and received notice from the insurance Co that the trees limbs are hanging over the house. If not removed we lose our policy. The trees are on the neighbors property. We gave him the opportunity to trim them off our property & he could have hired who he wanted but he could not. I immediately called Jess who has done work for us before. We trust him. He came out right away. He knows what insurance companies are looking for. We did not want our policy cancelled. He didn't disappoint. The trees were not done to the neighbors liking but to give a bad review based on that is wrong. We had to take them back further for insurance purposes. He gave me his professional opinion and was very thorough and honest, super easy-going guy and not pushy at all. He worked with my schedule and came on a weekend to finish the job in 2 days. He was punctual on both days which is important for me cause I'm always busy. His crew of men were hard working, and left my yard nice and clean. I am happy with their service and would highly recommend them to any one who needs trees or landscaping services. There is not one thing that is negative about this company. I sent quite a few tree services emails through Yelp explaining my needs and he was the only one that got back with me. They removed 3 palm trees and trimmed up 2 of my Japanese Maples that I had recently purchased beautifully! They came in - did the job - removed the stumps and oh my goodness - did they REALLY do that? They left the area better than they found it! The entire team was great. They are polite, helpful, and apparently, efficient as the task was completed in under an hour. Seriously? Yes! ~ An hour! The space was tight, the tree was right next to a retaining wall that I recently had built, they drilled out the stump with no damage, I'm not even sure how they did that. I completely recommend them. I've already asked if he'd come back next year to trim up the trees to keep them growing beautifully and to keep my hands off them so I don't screw them up. Oh - and the price?! When he gave me the price I asked him to do the job right then. WOW! OK - you're hired! I called for a quote. Jess came out and gave me an estimate that I liked and said I'd get back to him shortly. I called 2 days afterwards after talking it over with my wife. However, after 4 times calling (over a 3 week period) and leaving at least 2 messages, I still haven't received a phone call back 1) acknowledging the message was received and 2) to set up a time when they can come trim my tree. Not sure how or why some of the others gave them a low rating, but in our book, they were tops! From our first conversation I knew that I would give the bid to Jess. He was professional, prompt and asked the right questions. So when I finally got the San Jose permit to have 2 trees removed from the front (sidewalk), I called Jess and he said that his team would be over that week!!! He fully explained the procedures that PG&E and city services would do for marking potential underground pipes and wires, too. His team was thorough and took extra care to protect my picket fence from falling limbs and when the job was over...cleaned up! I called them and left a messaged to asked what happened. They returned my called to rescheduled. They came out promptly the second time around. Then we set a date for the work but they called a day in advance to rescheduled again. But hey, at least they called. They did came out after the first rescheduled and did great work. They were late for over 2 hours. - got to the site 1 hour late with no apology, and then waited for another guy for about 45 minutes while he's bringing more tools. then they took a lunch... the estimated time for work was 4 hours. These guys might have been here for 3 but actual work was for 45 minutes. Charged us $425 for 45 minutes.. When I mentioned that they were late for 2 hours and asked them how long it is going to take.. his response was "so what? you want us to leave now?!" who talks like that to a client?? I had to stand there and tell them branch by branch what to take off.. when i asked to trip the long branches he started to BS me that he cant do it. The job was not done right (and he blamed it on me), they mover heavy potted plants from one are (which if completely understandable) but putting them back into place wasn't on their agenda... also they didn't clean after themselves. and on the phone he was just unprofessional, loud and aggressive. Jess was quick to respond to a voicemail I left asking for a quote for a live tree removal on my property. We scheduled a time for him to come look at the tree, which was arranged pretty quickly. He was on time and gave me more information that I didn't know I needed (i.e. informed me about city license, permits, etc). I assumed that since the tree was on my property, I could do what I want, but since it was still live, there are hoops to jump to please the city (ie. the city needs money so they will charge you everything they can). Jess still provided a quote that was very much in line with others that I received, and he actually included stump removal which one other did not. Because he provided me with knowledge, I opted to go with Jess, but also opted for an aggressive tree trim, rather than removal. I figure I could save a few hundred bucks by not paying the city, and do a trim now, let the tree naturally die, then have Jess come back again to remove a "dead" tree. The schedule for the tree trim was on a friday that I wasn't going to be home until noon. Jess said it was no problem and that he'd probably still be working when I got home. I got home at noon and there was no one to be found. However, the tree was trimmed just how I wanted, the property was cleaned up as if nothing happened, and he even cleaned out all my rain gutters (1st and 2nd story). I will certainly go with General Tree Service again for the dead tree removal, and also recommend his work to any family or friends. Good to see trustworthy and honest business. read more

Jesse trimmed the trees for my rental in Santa Clara. I'm far away and there's a tenant. He did a great job communicating with me at a distance. He uses cell phones, text, emails etc with ease and is very quick to respond via all three. He gave me the written estimate via email the same day I contacted him, and finished the job the next day. The tenant said about his work "- the property looks amazing- he went out of his way to really do a great job-" so I'm happy. His estimate was $400 less than the other estimate, and included more work. Afterwards he described to me how he met my neighbor to let her know he needed to trim so of her trees that were coming onto my property. After our tree decided to go kamakazee on our yard, Jess was able to come out same day for a quote and make arrangements to come out the next day to remove the tree (and several others that didn't need emergency removal.) Jess provided us with a lot of information and recommended that we get photo documentation of the trees damage as there wouldn't be time to get a permit for removal. (Case in point - less than an hour after he left after giving us the quote, another huge branch fell!) All in all, we had him remove 1 tree in the parkway (damaged), 3 yuccas (uplifting the foundation of our house, a juniper (just plain ugly), a tangerine tree (dead and being over taken by root stock), and trim back a maple tree. All the stumps were ground out, and his crew left the yard in good, clean condition. All in all, not what I *want* to spend money on, but we'll definitely use Jess and his crew again. read more

Jess and crew just took a Redwood Tree out of my front yard. The tree was rather large, but he and his crew removed it fast and even removed the stump with a grinder so it is no longer visible. This is only the second review I have ever done on yelp, so read carefully!! So I needed a couple trees removed. One company come out for an estimate, that was a little high I thought. I had two trees and 3 stumps... Realistically I could have cut down the trees, but wouldn't have been advisable. In any case they estimated a large amount of cash that did NOT include stump removal. I called GTS yesterday, to see what they could do.. 1/2 the amount WITH stump removal and they could do it the next day. (Even they were shocked at the other price) Today... they were running late so I called to see what was up. I left a message. They called me back within 5 mins and apologized, said they would be there in 20mins. They were.. had the trees cut, and two of the stumps removed within an hour. One stump was left due to a close water line, but they told me what to do with it. The cleaned up and on their way they went. I have never been more impressed with customer service, price, and just general friendliness with the whole group. Sadly yelp only allows 5 stars. read more

If I could give more than 5 stars I would in a heartbeat, not only for their skill and competence with trees but also for their outstanding customer service and fair pricing. We got bids from other highly-rated companies but none of them were as thorough, kind and responsive as General Tree. Jess came out to identify trees that were at risk of damaging homeowners and their property in and around our 38-unit homeowners association. Called Friday morning to have a broken limb removed. Jess said he would stop by in about 1 hour. Showed up as promised and after surveying the tree we found several other limbs that were suspect. Gave me a very fair quote to clean out all dead and dying limbs. His crew came by the at 7:00AM the following morning; completed all work and cleaned up not only our yard but also the neighbors. Buyer Beware! Having used General Tree (GT) for years to trim our trees, we were shocked by our experience in June. This year in addition to trimming the palm trees, we asked them to totally remove two dying liquid amber trees so we could replant new trees in their place. In the contract with GT, removal was defined as "remove and grind stumps and roots". After the GT crew left, we discovered the stumps and roots were still there. The GT crew had only gone down a couple of inches. We called GT and they came out the next day to complete the job. We assumed they had completed the work and hired a landscaper to plant the replacement trees. The landscaper discovered that both stumps and the major roots were still there--making it impossible to plant. When we contacted GT again, they sent someone to investigate but told the landscape crew, not us, that was all they would do. No one from GT ever responded back to us, the customer. Unfortunately, we had already paid them in full. We were forced to hire a new tree removal service to complete the work we originally hired GT to do. Our advice to you is to not use General Tree. Something has changed with their work ethic. Find someone else to do any of your tree work. read more
