They do what I ask, they tell me upfront what needs done, and wait for my approval. They don't do more than I ask unless I request an investigation. They get work done reasonably fast and I trust them. Also, they don't talk to me like I'm a dumb girl in a man's world (this matters in the realm of cars). read more

Where do I even begin? After everything that's happened, I will never trust this company with my vehicle again. A few months ago, I brought my vehicle in for an oil change and was supposed to receive a tire rotation because I purchased my tires there. The tire rotation was never done, and no one told me my brakes were in serious condition until after I had already paid. Almost immediately after leaving, my brakes started making noise. I was told I had enough brake life to make it until my next oil change. That wasn't even close to true. Before I reached my next service interval, the brakes were grinding, and I was suddenly facing nearly a $600 brake and rotor replacement. If my brakes were already that close to failure, why wasn't I warned before they destroyed the rotors? Then, after paying for the repair, I was once again told I would "probably need brakes again" on the exact same side. That made absolutely no sense and only raised more concerns. The worst part came after my most recent visit. My vehicle started feeling like something was wrong, so I inspected it myself. I found one lug nut completely missing, and the rest were loose and barely holding the wheel on. I'm incredibly lucky my wheel didn't come off while I was driving. That could have cost me my life or someone else's. At this point, I have absolutely no confidence in the workmanship or safety standards at this shop. Between the missed tire rotation, the lack of warning about my brakes, the repeated issues with the same wheel, and the dangerously loose lug nuts, I cannot recommend this business to anyone. I strongly encourage every customer to inspect their vehicle before leaving because what happened to me should never happen to anyone. read more

honest and competent. They do what they say needs to be done and advise when work is needless.

I have always treated my vehicles as an investment, trying to get as much use from the vehicle as possible. So you can imagine I am particular about the people who work on my vehicle. Mike took great care of my vehicle. He told me exactly what he was going to do and didn't hit me with any 'surprise' expenses or 'you really need this done'. When I dropped my vehicle off he said it would be ready for pick up at XX and it was ready when he said it would be (unlike other places that have kept me waiting) . The shop saved me money where possible without cutting the quality of work put into my vehicle. Mike is a great representation of what customer service should be. And it is great to find a place to that does quality work at a fair price. read more

Chris and Mike are honest conscientious and have a competent staff. I've relied on General Auto for over 20 years.

This is the only place I will be taking my car for problems. Mike has been helpful, understanding, transparent, and upfront about pricing. Each time I've needed their help they have been able to take me in and have been quick to work on my car. I greatly appreciate all General Auto and Tire has done for me and highly suggest them for work on your vehicle. read more

Fast and friendly service. I've gotten two state inspections done there for my job on work vehicles and they couldn't be more accommodating and friendly. Thank you Chris! read more

I have been going to General Auto and Tire since I first started driving five years ago. My parents have been going here longer than that. The simple reason that I keep coming back is the people. 1) They are honest 2) They do really, really good and thorough work 3) They are friendly, and respectful 4) They are expedient 5) The same people stick around Unlike many chain locations and other independent mechanics, the staff at General Tire actually care about their customers and don't try to gouge you when it comes to prices or work. Chris (the owner) always remembers me when I come in, and asks about my parents and siblings. Every time, I see the same mechanics working - which is comforting to know that the same people are touching your car, and they keep track of when you need various maintenance performed. They also keep you informed of what is going on with your car. Once, I was told that I would need to get new engine fluid (or something, I can't remember the details), but that I could wait until the next oil change. There was no pressure whatsoever, just a friendly reminder. I decided to just have them take care of it then since I had the time. I have always recommended them to my friends and they are perfect for anyone that needs a great mechanic who will respect you and your car. They definitely deserve all five stars! read more

This auto shop has treated me right on so many occasions. They know your name and have excellent customer service. Chris the owner and the great guys that work there, like Mike, Daniel, and Ted are all just awesome. I am a young female and they never tell me to fix anything that is not broken and they are always very upfront about pricing. I have never felt like I didn't get a good deal and they have even told me, "I didn't fix anything today so I am not going to charge you," when my car wouldn't start and I got it towed there but it started right up when they went to look at it. They told me to just bring it back if I had anymore issues, because my car battery was just dead.(The tow guy had tried to jump it but couldn't get it to start.) I would recommend them to anyone because I know they are trust worthy, but you will need an appt. because they stay busy! They will always do their best to fit you in though. I went just this morning and will continue to go back. read more

I love these guys! Always honest. Always timely and able to get my vehicles in and out quickly. They even schedule maintenance inspections. Most companies are first come first serve for inspections which is inconvenient. Lots of vehicle bays with lifts and updated technology for today's computer run cars. Take your car here. You will not be disappointed. read more

Our 2006 Honda Pilot's alternator stopped working while our youngest daughter was driving it... Since we live an hour or more away from Richmond, we had to have the car towed to the nearest garage who recommended General Auto and Tire. Chris and his team did a great job fitting us in their schedule... the repair was done in a day, at a great price... We can't say enough about how well we were treated by Chris and his team and would really recommend General Auto and Tire to all of our friends and neighbors - honest folks, great work, really fair prices!!! read more

great place. do solid work and explain everything they do/did in layman's terms. I'm lucky to have General Auto in my neighborhood. read more

There is no better Auto maintenance and repair place in Richmond! Possibly in the world! These folks are honest, personable, kind, fair and friendly. I really don't want anyone else touching my car. It's great to have that sense of trust as I know nothing about cars. They just turned an unexpected dead battery into a fantastic day! All the things Matt W. said in his review are true of my experience as well. read more

This business use to be good when the Father ran the business, they use to be honest, now it all for your money, i recently had a vehicle repaired there and they took one broke part off, put another broke part on,and claimed it was new part, another mechanic from another shop checked behind them and then brought it to there attention and John the mechanic at General Tire got angry and was ready to fight. He also told the other mechanic he could have just fix the problem instead of bring it back to him. John got paid for the job, that was not done. read more

I am a second generation customer and my daughter makes that third generation. Service is very dependable and fast. Not the cheapest shop in town, but you get what you pay for. I definitely recommend General Auto and Tire. read more

If I could give this place 100 stars I would. As a single mother, it can be overwhelming when your car breaks down. This place has supported me and given me the BEST customer service time and time again! Not only do they remember my name, but they know my financial situation, and they work hard to make everything manageable for me. When my car is going to be out of commission, they hook me up with a back-up car, and even help me transfer my child's carseat into it so I can get him to school. They talk frankly with me about my vehicle, and always give me the best customer service and advice. On one occasion they didn't fix anything when I brought it in and they didn't even charge me. "Honest" doesn't even do them justice! They are trustworthy and kind and frankly, I am certain that there is nobody better. BRING YOUR CAR HERE. You will not regret it; I am certain that they will be your repair shop for life. read more

I have been 100% pleased with the guys at General Auto & Tire. They are always friendly and they do great work, not to mention they're the most honest mechanics I've ever come across. They'll give you a heads up if you'll be needing work in the next few months, and give you an idea how much it will cost so you can plan for it. I recommend them to everyone that asks for a mechanic, and most of my office takes their cars there to be serviced. read more

I have been having my vehicles serviced at General Auto and Tire since 1993. They have taken excellent care of my vehicles at a fair price. The owner, Chris is very honest and always lets me know if my car will be needing something in the near future. He lets me know what I absolutely need to be safe and to take care of my car so it will last. There is no high pressure and they always let me know what it will cost before they do the work. Many of my friends now deal with General because I have had such a good experience for so long. I always feel like I get good honest service here. read more

For over 20 years we have taken all of our cars and trucks to them. They are honest and experts. They never pad an invoice saying that we need something done but are quick to point out anything dangerous. They are the "car guys" of Richmond! I have recommended them to friends and co workers who always thank me for my suggestion. read more

The General Auto and Tire team are "as good as it gets"...I've been using them since a friend recommended them over 15-years ago. I've also sent many customers/friends to them, who have also had great experiences. They never do work that isn't necessary, the work is always done right and their prices are fair and well below dealership costs. I now live over 57-miles from General and still make the trip. I really wouldn't trust anyone else with my car. read more
