Gene Bean’s Festival of Fun - Lemon Pucker: (Italian Icee)

If you're in Little Italy in The BX, Gene Bean's your sweet tooth's paradise! This Arthur Ave spot…read moreis your answer for ice cream, Zeppoles, Churros (yeah...those too) and of course- Italian Icee. Hubs and I had the most decadent Lemon Italian Icee at an old-time pizzeria in Brooklyn not long ago. Since then, they've been our trustworthy blueprint for Lemon Icee. Gene Bean's located inside the Arthur Avenue Retail Market and came up as "Ice Cream and Sorbet"- offering other sweet treats too. A big check mark for these guys because these Zeppoles are fresh and fried on the spot- but were heavy and thick- missing that true, light feel. Our Italian Icee experience was decent though. When everything was said and done, popping the trunk to enjoy our treats, was a nice ending in Little Italy at night.

So Gene Beans is not there, but O'Caffe is. The cups for the scoops didn't have lids that fit, so I ended up tying individual plastic bags around each and hoping it would work. It ended up a melted mess puddle inside each bag and not in the cups. The flavors were fine, not too much variety, but one plus was their in house affogato was excellent. Though again, the staff seemed confused how to make it and kept asking me which ice cream flavor and how many espresso shots. I'd go back for an affogato in the future, in house only.

A Little Italy tradition worth every stop!…read more Whenever we head to the Bronx for Italian cold cuts and fresh homemade ravioli, stopping at Delillo Pastry Shop is part of the tradition. We simply can't leave without it. Their cappuccinos are excellent--my personal favorite is the Nutella cappuccino--and my 6-year-old always asks for their rich hot chocolate. Before leaving, we always grab a gelato to go and pick up a box of pastries for the week. Everything we've tried has been fresh, delicious, and beautifully made, and they offer a wonderful variety of classic Italian desserts. The shop itself is small and cozy, which adds to its authentic neighborhood bakery charm. Just keep in mind that there isn't a dedicated parking lot, so you'll need to find street parking--and in Little Italy, that can definitely require a little patience! If you're visiting Arthur Avenue, Delillo Pastry Shop is a stop you shouldn't skip. It's one of those places that keeps you coming back year after year.

The affogato was great , son and I loved the mango sorbet was very good and strawberry wasn't bad . Something worth tasting is the pistachio croissant

We chose this spot for a family reunion, and they made us feel genuinely welcomed from the moment we walked in. The food was incredible. I had the Pork Chop Scarparo--perfectly cooked and full of amazing flavor. The pasta was spot‑on too and cooked just right. I had the garlic and oil side dish which was simple but delicious. There are plenty of great places in the area, but Antonios definitely deserves a spot on your list. It made our family gathering feel special, and the meal was unforgettable.

THE FOOD ----------------…read more+ Fried Calamari - Very crispy and as you would expect of any good fried calamari appetizer. Came with a small bowl of marinara. + Baked Clams Oreganata - LOTS of flavor. It was savory with the herb- and garlic-infused breadcrumb mixture and baked perfectly. + Chicken Marsala - 2 pieces of flattened and tender sauteed chicken breast with sliced mushrooms all around. Chicken was drowning in a suppppper delicious marsala wine sauce. Unfortunately, it was not served with any pasta to soak up the sauce. + Fruitti Di Mare - LOTS of delicious seafood - clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp - in marinara sauce. All of the seafood sat on a bed of spaghetti. + Kids' Spaghetti and Meatball - Solid spaghetti and meatball and what you would expect for a kid portion. + Kids' Chicken Parm with Ziti - DELICIOUS parm and sauce. One can argue that this was actually enough of a portion for an adult! + Nutella Pizza - Soooooo gooood. Super warm, thin, savory, a little sweet. Honestly, the best part of our meal. + Menu was traditional Italian and had a lotttttt of delicious foods that we wanted to try, but we only had so much space. THE SERVICE ------------------- + Food came out pretty quickly. - Waiters didn't give us much attention and when we were handed the bill, the waiter just kind of dropped it on the table and walked on, which was strange. THE SURROUNDINGS ------------------------------- + 2 adjacent dining rooms. Main dining room includes a bar and TVs, while the 2nd dining room is more spacious. = Entire bar area was filled with diners and folks watching college football. - Street parking only and can be challenging to find a good spot during weekend dinner hours. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Walked in with a party of 8 at 5:30 PM on an Autumn Saturday evening and were accommodated with a table immediately. = Was pretty crowded on a Saturday evening and there was a wait for some folks who arrived around 6-7 PM, but no wait before 6 PM.

It had loads of charm and offered amble seating. But, the true highlight was the breadth of unique gelato flavors that were on display in their large counters. Some of the more creative varieties that evening were Greek Yogurt with Figs, Roche Chocolate Hazelnut, and Kinder Bueno. I typically need to steer clear of dairy, so I was eager to see what they had in terms of vegan options. Unfortunately, on that evening, the only creamy, non-dairy flavor was Strawberry, which I sampled and found artificial tasting. So, I was then left with only sorbet options of lemon, passionfruit, raspberry, and mango. Sorbet can often be too sweet or too icy in texture, so I was bummed, but I really wanted to get something. I settled on a small cup, which was absurdly expensive at $9, but still allowed me the opportunity to try two flavors. I went with the passionfruit and the raspberry, and I have to say, that both were fantastic! They offered really ripe flavor, while also tasting clean, not artificial, and not super sugary. I was very impressed. I also tried the smallest tastes of the Blueberry Cream, Banana Pudding, and Coffee scoops from family members and had similar sentiments that they were very natural tasting. In fact, the Banana Pudding tasted more like a mashed, frozen banana than a sugar-laden pudding. Bianco Nero certainly delivered on the claims from their website about their creative flavors, their top-tier ingredients, and their playful presentation within their display case and on their fun sprinkle-bedazzled cones. There site also mentioned the shop being a real destination, and I agree that it was a true foodie experience worth the visit.

The moment you walk in,…read moreyou're surrounded by the smell of fresh espresso and classic Italian pastries that have been delighting customers for generations. I ordered a cappuccino and, for the first time, decided to try the Rum Baba. I'm glad I did. The pastry was incredibly soft, perfectly soaked with just the right amount of rum, and had a light sweetness that wasn't overpowering. The service was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. The staff was happy to answer questions and made me feel like a regular, even though it was my first visit. The shop has an old-school Italian bakery feel that's becoming harder to find, making the experience just as enjoyable as the food itself.

I've always walked by Egidio Pastry Shop but now I'm on a mission. I need dessert to carry through out the weekend. Walking inside, it's nostalgic feels from my childhood. Freshly baked Sicilian treats that are proudly on display. I ask: Do you sell Italian bread? I'm told no so I'll gladly take a pound of biscotti. I zero on my favorite, almond biscotti. I ask for a few fruit and nut biscotti as well. Somehow a filler was added, it wasn't even biscotti?? It was a flat, flavorless cookie. I would have enjoyed sesame cookies but I wasn't asked. It was just jammed into the box unbeknownst to me. I don't have these problems in Brooklyn, uncool. There was a cute nonna in front of me ordering Italian pastries. She's directing the counterperson who's preparing her box: I'll have one of those, two of these, while eating a mini cannoli. First time here, I'd like to try the pastries on my next visit. Egidio Pastry Shop, until next time!
