Went in a while ago, first, it was pay what you want night which always throws me off, so I just paid what the normal price was listed. They did have a tray of free donuts someone brought in that were really yummy from a shop nearby. The ambiance is adorable, very cozy and warm. Quiet spot everyone in there seemed to be working on laptops. The girl behind the counter was sweet and polite. the1 girl behind the counter had a handful of people in the cafe, she let me know when I ordered it might take a while- no worries I was there to meet someone anyways. But 30mins of chatting and I noticed I still hadn't gotten my chai, that's okay I knew she was busy. I had also ordered a hummus flatbread with falafel. The chair came and then an hour went by and still no flatbread, eventually I asked and the girl admitted she had gotten behind. Was making it now, well when it came out it had no hummus, just flat bread with falafel and mozzarella.. . She apologized and offered to make me a drink on the house to compensate. the falafel was very very dry. not exactly what I had expected. I only ate 3 bites. I ended up ordering a ginger iced tea. Good, but super spicy possibly too much ginger, my friend ordered the same thing and had the same comment about the spiciness. Gather has a very welcoming and homey atmosphere, with lots of interactive activities such as chalk board walls, games, doodle books. There are frequently people in nooks of the cafe doing work. The cashier was incredibly sweet but I was a bit disappointed with the acai I received. While the acai itself was fantastic, tasting truly like acai, they were out of bowls and resolved to place it in a cup. Although the presentation is disappointing, I wouldn't usually complain. However, I was bothered by the amount of acai was given to me in the cup, barely half way full when I paid $10. read more

This is a great location to grab a drink, listen to live music, socialize with friends, and pet the most adorable dog ever (Peanut is the cutest!) A community space with ample couches and tables so there is no shortage of space to sit down a relax. I've gone here several times to study and I highly recommend ordering the matcha latte while you're here! The baristas are all so nice and I can tell they really put their heart into every drink that they make. All the drinks are at a reasonable price too. This is the best matcha latte that I've had in New Haven so you know that I will come back again. I've also had their kombucha on tap and as an avid kombucha fan, it was delicious - another highly recommended item from me. The open concept of Gather allows you easily walk around the entire location and is a great area for socializing. I've also gone to a private event here at Gather and it was a wonderful venue. There is a calendar on the wall of all the social events available for that month (there's always something every night). I definitely want to check out trivia on Monday. I'll be back again and I highly suggest more New Haven residents check out this location - it is underrated but a great space! read more

Gather comes to Upper State street in the spirit of the continuing gentrification of the area (I have to call it like I see it, sorry). Like the nearby Coffee Pedaler, Gather is molded in the artsy third wave coffee house tradition, but seeks to distinguish itself as a community space (aka third space), record store/live music hybrid that prides itself on highlighting local foods and good coffee. It is a shop that would not be out of place in Bushwick or Williamsburg, with a dark, earthy decor that is extremely calming, forcing you to be a bit more intentional and silent while ordering and browsing the space. It would not be that conducive to studying, but it would be excellent for people watching. They accept cash and card, in addition to SNAP and EBT, one of the few places in the area that seeks to be inclusive of people from all socioeconomic groups. My standards for a coffee shop are pour overs and dirty chai. The Chai is made from scratch and is delightfully spicy, so if you are a ginger fan you will like this. They have a variety of nondairy milks and sweeteners (if you don't eat honey, please ask for a different sweetener it comes default). They use the Kirkland Oatmilk which is plenty sweet so next time I will ask for it unsweetened. The service is very good and for a shop that has been open for 4 months, it has a pretty solid client base, it was fairly packed for a weekday afternoon. Third spaces like these can be a bit disorienting, but it is still welcome as an escape from State Street traffic. read more

I went here on 1/21/23. This is an eclectic, kind of Bohemian coffee shop which is very interesting to try out. The atmosphere was different. There was someone playing guitar in the afternoon, quite nice, and people sit around on the sofas and chairs, just like they are in a living room. However, there was supposed to be some food options, such as flatbreads, and someone in my party was hungry. But the very polite person behind the counter said they didn't have have any food this afternoon, which was very disappointing. I understand this is run in a relaxed style and may not be for everyone, but it's certainly worth checking out. read more

Saffron lattes, live performances, board games, and movie nights answer the question of why East Rock needs another coffeehouse. Gather is a pleasantly dark space (so it doesn't attract study groups) with excellent Terra Nova (New Hampshire) coffee. They're not yet booked solid with activities, so get your bid for a show, art display, or handicrafts table in! When they opened, I'd questioned how they'd differentiate themselves from Chapter Two (the former Neverending Books, also a community performance space), and the answer is that Gather is more food and activities oriented. It's also a lovely place to sit with a latte in that dead spot of Sunday afternoon when relatively little is open, so please keep them busy enough to stay open on Sundays (but skitter away when I want a chair, please and thank you!). read more

Decent coffee and some tasty snacking options! But what you're really coming here for is the mega cozy atmosphere to study in or a fun event in the evening. I love Gather. I started coming here religiously to study for my board exams a few weeks ago and immediately felt so welcomed and part of a community I didn't even know existed. Despite being an anxious mess for this exam, I've been so comfortable spending 10 hour days here because: 1) Sultan (the owner) and Jamie (my favorite barista) are amazing and help create an atmosphere of inclusivity by just being themselves 2) The prices are incredibly reasonable, which I really appreciate as a student 3) They are dog friendly 4) They have couches 5) There are always events going on at night if you're looking for something to do So glad I found this spot. Definitely coming back, despite living a 35 minute walk away!! This is a great place to hang out, with dark intimate lighting and comfy couches.
