Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains along the Kaweah River, The Gateway Restaurant & Lodge was the perfect place to enjoy dinner after a memorable day exploring Sequoia National Park. With our large group of 7, we were seated outdoors, where we enjoyed spectacular views and the calming sounds of the Kaweah River. I had made a reservation earlier in the day, and the staff was very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Service remained attentive & pleasant thruout the evening. The hubs & I wanted to keep things light & healthy, so we shared serveral dishes, to sample more of the menu. We started with the jumbo shrimp cocktail and crab cakes, both of which were heavenly. The shrimp were fresh & sweet, pairing perfectly with the cocktail sauce. The escargot bourguignon was also enjoyable ~ the snails were fresh and not mushy like those I've had at some other restaurants, although I've tasted better versions elsewhere. The colossal snails were imported from France and prepared in the chef's special butter sauce. Next, we shared the Chinese chicken salad, which came in a generous portion. To finish, we shared a 12-oz New York steak with our daughter, and it was cooked perfectly medium-rare. She also added a cup of clam chowder soup, while my son ordered his own filet mignon steak, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, the food was decent for the price, but the real highlight was the relaxing atmosphere & beautiful river view. We recently had brunch at the Gateway Restaurant and Lodge. While the experience had some culinary high and lows, the setting and hospitality made it a memorable visit. The atmosphere here is flawless. The restaurants sits right along a beautiful creek, providing a scenic backdrop. Listening to the peaceful sound of the rushing water made for an incredibly relaxing meal. Our culinary experience was a bit mixed, especially considering the price point. The highlights of the meal were definitely the appetizers and desserts; the calamari was very good, and crème brûlée was excellent. However, the main courses has left something to be desired. There was nothing exceptional about the chicken Alfredo, the steak or the pizza with fries, all of which felt average. Fortunately, the outstanding service more than made up for any shortcomings in the kitchen. A team of highly attentive staff members checked on us promptly throughout to ensure we had everything we needed. Our server, Clarissa, was phenomenal host who look after us beautifully. As a wonderful final touch, they offered a complementary photo to commemorate our visit, taken by John, who is a remarkably talented photographer. Great view but breakfast service ended at 10:20 on a Monday morning, before we even got a chance to sit down. No other customers there at the time, so it's not like they were slammed. We ended up going to Sequoia Cafe down the road instead, which was less expensive anyway. The location has real potential given the view, but cutting off breakfast that early seems like it's costing them business. A little more flexibility on hours would probably help. read more

The service it's always excellent here, but this time was super excellent. Our hosts and our waiter were super attentive. Maybe because I had my beautiful daughters with me and they took all the great attention. It was 2 weeks after my oldest daughter birthday but somehow our male waiter said I heard it was somebody's birthday and I said yes. My daughter's birthday was not long ago. So they treat her with a belated birthday celebration. It was so nice from him. So, when we got there we ordered our drinks and right after we got the drinks we ordered our food. My grandbaby ordered the chicken tenders with fries from the kids menu. My youngest love their burger. My oldest got the filet Mignon with mushrooms and fresh salad. I got my usual the veggie sandwich with fries. The waiter brought us everything but the filet Mignon. It was taking a while to be cooked. So he gravely left offered my daughter complimentary soup to mitigate the wait. And she got it. So when we finished eating the food he arrived with a huge plate with chocolate cake and ice cream and a big birthday torch. It look so nice and delicious. My grand baby ate all his chicken and left some fries. He said he loved the chicken and they were satisfying. My youngest daughter like I mention before. She loves their burger. So she was satisfied too. I so loved the veggie sandwich on a wheat bread. I just love all the fresh veggies they put in there. It had mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. With some mayo. Also the fries were very crispy. I really love it. My oldest mention she loved the soup and the salad. She kind of ate a little bit of the filet Mignon and mushrooms. She took the left over home. She mention the meat was so juicy and well seasoned. It was so tender and tasty. The dessert they brought us for free and the soup. So my youngest, my grand baby and the three of them ate the dessert after we sang happy birthday. I thought it was a very nice gesture of him to do that for my daughter. Highly recommended. After a multi hour road trip, my friend and I Denise got here. It was the last intentional spot in our day. But there was something we had not considered, we were going to be going to a place that required us to be fresh and ready to receive the wonder of place by a lack and we only had the energy for an angry stop at a gas station. So this place I visited when I was tired and that kind of gunked up the experience. If I would have gone with more energy to fully open my eyes than this experience would have been wondrous. When I booked the reservation I did it because it was a place by a lake. I enjoy water front dining and I usually use an ocean for scenery and today I was in a place where I could use a large creek. And since I was not going with any specific expectations that lake hit me like a bucket of wow. I remember like seeing the mouth of the lake going down like actual rocks. Like I was seeing the waters that people raft on with commitment to the outdoors. It felt like I had traveled into a place where trees were purest, bird melodies were the only noise in town (besides the water running in the creek), and cabins belonged to those who called the mountains home. I was in a novel and for some reason I felt like it was written by Twain. And that is really what I can say about this place. That is mostly what I remember the beauty of the creek. I wanted to spend more time there, I could have walked it, they had like a lounge but I did not. But I do remember the forested view that went on, and the roaring, jagged leg being a central character other than that I have small things to say. I remember the salad being ok. Denise and I shared a dish, I can't remember why but we did not eat the whole thing. It was inherently bad. But this could have been an off night, or just not the dish of the place, and really you go here for the lake, and the food was great in some ways just not in this specific way. I went to this place a few weeks ago, and, if I had not make it clear I remember the experience of being with the lake. we wanted to check it out for a possible wedding venue...... unfortunately we will not be returning. thier saving grace is that it's nestled right against the river. brunch is a prefix set menu. $31 for adults, not worth the money. comes with a crappy apple in sweet cream, stale & dense begniets, cold potatoes and something they tried to call an omelette. my fiance had the country fried steak, and daughter had bacon and eggs. dennys offers the same for much less. we at least drank our monies worth in champagne. our server was sweet but the busser was more present and i had to get up and grab my own champagne and condiments. so much potential at this spot, but missing the mark. hundreds of cars drive by daily on the way to the national park, but i can see why no one stops in. read more

Great place to stop after leaving Sequoia National Park. We sat on the outside patio and the views are gorgeous. We didn't have a reservation since we decided to stop in while driving by but they did ask and said we should make them next time. The service was great. Very quick and friendly. I had the eggplant parm with veggies and twice baked stuffed potato. The eggplant was really good. I was thrilled to see it wasn't breaded. It was cooked really well. Not mushy at all. Quality of food is below mediocre or terrible. The kids pizza was definitely at the cheap frozen food level. The salad was ok but tiny. The pasta didn't have much taste. I asked for a well-done burger and after a very long wait they brought an uncooked burger. I asked why it wasn't cooked and they brought a half cooked burger which I returned and finally cancelled my order. The waiter first refused to take responsibility for their mess up so I had to asked for the manager. The manager was impolite and finally with a grumpy and weird attitude took the item off the check. We stopped here to charge our car since they have two charging stations, and were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful this place is. The creek view is stunning, and the restaurant is cozy and welcoming. You can dine while enjoying the scenery, and they also offer Wi-Fi. We ended up getting takeout so we could save time and explore Sequoia National Park. It was great to charge the car and enjoy a delicious lunch before entering the park. Great place next to Sequoia National Park. It's right outside the gate of Sequoia National Park. The restaurant is so cool, it is next to a lake. There are even ducks down by the lake. We ordered Baked Brie $20. It was ok. The Baked Brie was good. Soft cheese with a crispy almond crust. The jam was really good too. But the bread was just plain bread. Nothing special. Sequoia Burger $23 was good. It didn't look at good, cuz the bun and lettuce wasn't put together, but it was good. The fries were not salty and were actually perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Definitely a place to stop by before you go in Sequoia or after. Limited parking spaces. read more

Literal perfection - this tucked-away gem is a MUST VISIT if you're in the Sequoia area! The crab cakes were truly exceptional - delicious, clearly fresh, and great flavor. Best French dip I've ever had (and I've had many) - perfectly seasoned au jus, tender meat, PERFECT bread. The homemade chips were AMAZING - crispy, perfectly salted, clearly made with love. Even the house made fries were incredible. My husband's burger was also phenomenal - juicy, well-seasoned, quality beef you can taste. Basically, everything we tried was outstanding. Gateway delivered on every single dish. Service was top-notch as well. Everyone we encountered was friendly, on-the-ball, orders up in a timely manner. That was just a cherry on the top though because the food and views were the main attraction. Speaking of the views - wow!! The trees, the river, the bridge, the sunset, the patio overlooking the babbling brook, the scenery truly steals the show. Was this heaven? It really gave me a sense of serenity, joy, and peace just to take it all in. We're definitely going to stay at the lodge the next time we're in the area as well. However, the decor was very dated and needed a good cleaning. I've attached a picture of the view from my table of the incredibly dirty door going into the kitchen! Servers are going in, touching this door, and then bringing you food, drinks, plates, etc. Just gross! CLEAN THE DOOR. Bathroom said, "employees must wash hands". Who cares if they walk out and touch this door? The ironic part is you can see cleaning supplies in the top corner of the pic. USE THEM. The riverside setting at The Gateway is absolutely beautiful, and the view is the only reason this review even has a one-star. Unfortunately, the food was one of the most disappointing meals we've had. My husband ordered the pork chops with vegetables and a twice-baked potato, and I had the chicken piccata with a twice-baked potato. The potatoes were nearly inedible. The skins and the potato itself were so hard that we could barely cut them with a knife. It tasted like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours before a potato topping was added right before serving. Even the topping was bland and had almost no flavor. My chicken piccata was equally disappointing. The chicken was tough, dry, and completely lacking in flavor. I only managed to eat about a quarter of it before giving up. The pork chops were average at best, but certainly not memorable. For the prices they charge, I expected a much higher level of quality. The food simply didn't come close to matching the cost or the beautiful setting. If you're visiting Three Rivers, I'd recommend enjoying the scenery somewhere else and spending your dining budget at places like Tony's Taverna instead. We left wishing we had. read more

I'm not even sure where to begin. The restaurant itself is cute from the outside, but unfortunately the inside feels very run-down and poorly maintained. We ended up leaving shortly after being seated because the experience was so uncomfortable. The customer service from the two young ladies working was extremely rude and unwelcoming. In fact, the people seated behind us mentioned that interactions with the staff are usually hit or miss, which was disappointing to hear. Customer service plays a huge role in the relationship between a restaurant and its customers. A friendly attitude and welcoming environment can make all the difference. Thankful, w/ reservations for 5 at 9am on a Friday in July. Attentive service the minute we arrived. Couple minute wait for a table (outdoor patio N/A due to influx of "meat" bees.) Beautiful view overlooking the Kaweah River, from inside as well. Our guests from Italy raved about the pancakes, hash browns, and CHICKEN FRIED STEAK. Fantastic breakfast for everyone with the "Traditional Three Rivers Breakfast", "Peacock Omelette" & crispy bacon hitting the mark. Went there today for lunch. It seemed like the entire restaurant is being neglected. Dirty walls and carpet. No care taken to upgrade or make repairs as needed. Lunch was average. Upon arrival, I eagerly anticipated being seated outside to enjoy the beautiful scenery. To my dismay, despite the outdoor area being completely vacant, we were informed that we couldn't sit there. This was both surprising and disheartening, especially since it seemed like the ideal spot to enjoy our meal. Once you step inside, the experience falls flat. It feels like a shabby indoor diner, dimly lit and cramped. When it came to the food, I found it rather mundane, especially given the high prices on the menu. The dishes tasted more like they were microwaved than freshly prepared. It was disappointing that both the service and the food failed to live up to the reputation of a place celebrated for its views and dining experience. I genuinely wanted to love this place, but I left feeling that the unwelcoming staff and subpar food overshadowed the beautiful surroundings. This my first time dinning here and let me tell you it was amazing. We arrived without a reservation and the staff were amazing. They let us know there was a large amount of people ahead of us but if we waited at the bar they would try and accommodate our large party of 8. They sure did! We had drinks at the very well stocked bar and in 15-20 minutes they had a table for us in the banquet room. We had the entire banquet room to ourselves which was very nice. The food was delicious and prices were fair. We asked about seating outside by the river and all our questions were answered. If you want a table by the river call ahead and make a reservation. But we will definitely be returning to this place. It is a little hidden treasure that is super close to Sequoia National Park. I know this is one of the first places to eat out of the park, but DON'T eat here!! It's some of the worst food we've had and was almost inedible. Cold, over priced, potatoes were hard and chewy. Completely unappetizing. I'm sure the river view is nice, but the inside of the restaurant is filthy. They must stay in business by taking advantage of tourists. Don't let the front of this restaurant fool you, it's huge!! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, we had no issue getting a table on a Wednesday evening. Definitely sit out on the deck by the river, the view is gorgeous. Taylor had us laughing all night long, he was the best server!! He made sure all of our food was made to order (thanks for the Parmesan!). The Marsala pasta with chicken was great and I had enough to take home for dinner the next night too. as i walked in this place, my first impression was the cozy ambiance and scenic view of the river. however, my praise for this place just about stops there... many of the front employees looked frazzled and confused of what to do. the employee at the bar (who i can only assume to be their manager?) kept asking them questions to see if they had room for my group and neither of them knew how to answer. eventually we got seated by a different host; we had to wait for a bit but i didn't mind. i'm not sure if it was just bad timing on our part or a bigger, more consistent issue. either way, once we got sat outside the service improved, so i appreciate that for the food, it was just alright and honestly costly for how it tastes. i split the vegetable pizza with a friend and it was fine. others got the blt with soup and it looked like a really small portion. my friend said ants were on the bread that came with his escargot. he, for some reason, decided not to tell anyone including us, so i don't know any more about this. i would say skip if you are coming back from sequoia and are looking for somewhere to fill up. read more

Simple food and great views. One of the few restaurants outside of the Sequoias and it was reasonably priced given the convenience and portion sizes. We thankfully came before the morning rush and were given a table right next to the river. By the time we finished at 9:30 AM, the parking lot was packed. *Three Rivers Traditional Breakfast: we ordered sunny side up eggs but they came out over easy. The server offered to take it back but we kept them. But everything else was decent. The hash browns were fried well and nicely seasoned with salt and pepper. The bacon was crispy and they glistened with grease. The fruit was lukewarm and the pineapple tasted better than the cantaloupe. Even without the syrup, there was a sweet smell to the pancakes. Very thick and fluffy. *Two Eggs, Bacon and Potatoes: I got my eggs scrambled and they were light in texture and flavor. I definitely leaned on ketchup for some seasoning. *Muffins: all entrees came with a banana muffin. These were buttery and sweet. They were a bit dry but nothing the side of butter couldn't fix. Pork chops were juicy and well flavored, ribeye was also juicy, tender, and flavorful. The sequoia burger was cooked perfectly at medium rare. The only thing was that the chicken Alfredo which was $39!!!! Was not good. The sauce lacked any flavor which is what makes the whole meal. The bow tie pasta wasn't my favorite either. Was really looking forward to eating here as it has a great view of the River. Also, my daughter had eaten here for breakfast and enjoyed it. However, I was not so lucky. My husband and I ate here for dinner since we were staying right next door. (10% discount if you show them your room key.) . We weren't super hungry so we decided to split an app and entree. We ordered the fried calamari, which was good--no complaints other than the price $21. We also split the chicken piccata, which came with a baked potato and a side of green beans and carrots. Where to begin with this? For $35 you get about half a chicken breast. If you know chicken piccata, you know that it's supposed to be pounded thin, coated in flour and cooked so that the coating stays somewhat crunchy on the surface. This chicken was thicker and the coating was soggy and falling off. Taste-wise it was just ok. The baked potato was nothing special but it's hard to mess that up unless you undercook it. Potato was cooked properly and topped with some sour cream and butter. Nothing spectacular. The veggies were ok, but the portion was pretty small, so split between two people, kinda ridiculous. My husband commented that some of his green beans were undercooked. As far as the service, it was just ok. She did her job, but while she didn't have a total attitude, she wasn't thrilled to have this job either. The busboys were super nice and attentive though. Oh, and we sat out on the deck which had bird poop on the railing and a very persistent wasp flying around us the whole time, so for me, that took away from the river view.
