Dr. Albert Kuo set a high bar. After a filling and then a crown failed to solve my tooth pain, I saw Dr. Kuo for a root canal. I am not fearful of the dentist but panicked when the roof of my mouth was numb and felt like I couldn't breath. Of course, I could breathe and swallow just fine, but I had to convince my brain of that. Dr. Kuo: He's very professional, period. Only one thing I would like to point out is that he would unintentionally press against your jaw when he treats you. So if you have plastic surgery you better tell him before the treatment. Dr. Buchanan: He came in for 5 minutes and say hey we gonna do root canals on your tooth and leave. I was not happy with him cause he didn't seem to give me any CHOICES. He could use his time to explain better and answer my questions so I feel alright but he didn't. He just determined what he wants to do on you and boom! that's it! I thought of using another dental office but I really stay for Dr. Kuo and the advance equipments.. Facility: Clean with the most advanced Equipment!! It's my first time seeing dentists using microscope when treating my tooth. The root canal procedure is first enough. and the endodontist Dr. Duo took X-ray after the treatment to make sure it looks right. They have something to bite and something to keep you mouth open unvoluntarily so it's an ease on your face muscle. Never run into this legendary lady Monica, and never have problem with bills. Hygenists: I used to go to dentists and the hygenist put a suction tube in my mouth for the whole procedures to keep my saliva low, but they don't do it here so I was nearly choke for a couple of time. Although they called me and move me to an earlier appointment when other people canceled theirs, it's usually SUPER DIFFICULT to get the appointment (so another star down). read more

Pros- very friendly staff, low wait time for my appt and very educated dentist so I felt like I was in good hands. Cons- I called this office and another one to set up my routine exam based off of my insurance. I chose to go w/ gateway as the other location informed me (upfront and honestly) that my cleaning would occur on the 2nd visit. When I scheduled this appt I was told to allot 1-1.5 hours. 45 minutes into my appt the dentist asks if I could come back for my cleaning. Either (A) the dentist and the scheduler were not on the same page or (B) it was a way to charge an extra visit. Either way not thrilled for the lack of planning on their part up front. Next, the cleaning was backwards. I had my teeth "cleaned" before doing the "scrubbing" w the metal tool (sorry don't know the terminology). Never have I ever had it done in that order. Also, there was ZERO flossing involved. Mind boggled. Lastly, the cleaning total time was 15-20 minutes so there was time to complete. I do not think this is a bad practice however I do not fully trust it so i will probably not return in 2021. read more

Went to have my maryland bridge repaired and had a very good experience. I was a bit worried after reading some reviews but Dr. Kim was great as were the people in the front office. Price was another concern for me and the whole thing ended up costing about half of what they estimated on the phone. I received a bill for $100 in November 2021 for a service ten months earlier. I left six voicemails and emailed six times to both billing and the front desk (the billing emails bounced back). No response. I contacted BBB, they also did not hear back. My insurance has verified they paid this and their check was cashed in March 2021. Just got a second bill for the same amount. Insurance payment of $100 still not credited to my account. Dentist was great, but do not recommend the practice. read more

I came here because my husband at the time worked in Bank of America and it was just next door. Delta insurance sucks and they are one of the only ones who took it. The office looks professional and the staff appeared to be unorganized. You never knew who was going to do what. You just end up standing there like a dummy. The Dr. Kuo is good. He is talkative and keeps the mood light while he examines your teeth. I noticed that here they do the exam and cleaning separately. I came the first time expecting the exam, xrays and cleaning. Well turned out it was the consultation and X ray then I had to reschedule the cleaning. What a waste of time! I made time out of my day to come here and then now I have to go through this again? Sheesh? When I finally got my teeth cleaned the second appointment, the hygenist was nice as well. I checked out and they charged me $5.00 to rinse my mouth out with water! Huh!? What a way to nickel and dime me to death. Overall I would ask what everything costs upfront but the service was decent. I've had better. Two things to remember: Ask about pricing of everything! I was raving about the dentists here, seriously, to everyone. "They really care about my teeth being healthy- they don't just want to sell me invisalign or whitening!" I do really like the dentists, they do a fine job. They check in with you a lot during procedures. All good. But then... I was referred to a specialist that was out of network. Apparently, he is the only specialist they work with. I was assured, numerous times, that the out of network coverage would be approved prior to the procedure or I would have the option to cancel it. I even received a letter from my insurance, outlining the coverage (significant) for the out of network doctor. Anyway, long boring paragraph and one root canal later, I stumble up to the counter and they bill me for the full, uninsured amount. I tried to explain that it must be a mistake etc etc. They say, ok, just a second, Monica will work it out with you. Sounds good. Monica's office: Me explaining the above, over and over and asking what exactly, I should do. Monica being the coldest most evil and unempathetic person I've ever met repeating over and over, "well I don't know what you should do. This is between you and your insurance company now. You knew the doctor was out of network and might not be covered." Crying, frustrated, Monica still apathetic with a capital A. And a bunch of other words too. I leave the office crying, just having put thousands on my credit card. I call my insurance. They tell me that everything is fine. They cover 80% of out of network costs but they never received a claim from the dentist because (the insurance person tells me) it takes them too long to receive payment out of network so dentists like to make patients pay up front, then have the patient themselves file a claim and reimburse themselves. Even as MESSED UP and seemingly unethical as that approach sounds, I would much rather Monica the ugly psycho Monster to have been up front with me and told me to simply and specifically file my own claim and that I wasn't totally screwed. My dental work is incomplete and I absolutely positively will never go back to this place. Update 7/14: So the whole reason I was in a rush to get that root canal done was because I was leaving the city to work in LA for 2 months and would be far from home and unable to get dental care. When they did my root canal, however, they drilled through my crown and simply refilled it, without following up with plans for a new crown. Imagine my surprise when 3 weeks and almost 2000 miles later, I'm sitting in LA and my crown cracks in half and falls out of my mouth. Imagine how unsurprised I was when I called and found them to be psychotic and negligent. I think disputing the original charge on my credit card (oh no, they still haven't reimbursed me the insurance) would be cheaper and easier than a lawyer. read more

Very efficient and practical. Everything is very organized and straightforward, and appointments move smoothly. I just came in for some minor things - we will see how it goes if I have to get something more serious done - but it was one of the most relaxing dentist appointments I've had, because they made sure I knew exactly what was going on and how long the wait would be, etc. There were no surprises, and everything moved like a well oiled machine. Much better than artsy doctor's offices with gorgeous art that can't keep paperwork straight, larger places that seem to be in a state of perpetual chaos, smaller places that don't have enough resources, etc. It just seemed well ran and well equipped. read more

Wasted my time...twice! The office manager and staff aren't very good with customer service, or taking information correctly.. If this is how you run your business, I don't want you touching my teeth. The first time I got there at the crack of dawn just before the end of last year. I waited a good 20 minutes before I was called up to the desk and the woman said- "oh by the way, your insurance for this year is run out, do you just want to pay out of pocket or wait until next year?"...Umm excuse me, I've had this appointment for 2 weeks, could you have told me that BEFORE I woke up at the crack of dawn? Perhaps at least when you did the reminder call 2 days ago? So I waited until my insurance re-upped the next year. I requested an extra long appointment to do cleaning, x-rays and fix a cracked tooth. I took a full afternoon away from my busy job to get this taken care of. When I got there dental assistants were literally running from room to room, and things seemed disorganized. I waited another 15 mins before I was helped. The dental assistant took pictures of my cracked tooth because she said I only had a 30 minute appointment...whhhaaaat? Once again poor business management and poor customer service. read more

This place is awful. I went to them in April 2011 for a first patient cleaning, or what I thought was a cleaning appointment since I hadn't seen a dentist since moving to Seattle.Turned out that they just wanted to take 18 x-rays and then talk to me about all the awful things that I had wrong with my mouth. Their plan for me would cost me thousands above what insurance would cover, and none of it was even necessary or true, according to the dentist I have been seeing for over 20 years. Fast forward to now, trying to get my x-rays from them so I can see another dentist, and they are not cooperating at all. They ignore the requests from the other dentist and they are not returning my calls. This is extremely unethical. I wouldn't go back and wouldn't even be dealing with them again if I didn't need my records. read more

This place is always pretty easy get appointments. They do tend to move patients at a very high rate. Because of this, you get very little time with the actual dentist but they do have very thorough cleanings. I have had several fillings done here and I am happy with the results. Update: I had a crown performed here and it was not fun. The temporary crown they gave me came off after 2 days (it is supposed to last for 2 WEEKS). I went in multiple times to try and get it re-cemented, but it would come off in a matter of hours. I ended up using denture adhesive to stick it on, which would maybe last for a day. Then, right before I went to get the permanent crown, I wake up to find I have swallowed the temporary one. The dentist then made fun of me when I went to get the permanent one on. To top it all off, the permanent crown doesn't even fit right, but I don't want to get it fixed by them. :( read more

Hmmm, not quite sure. What drew me here was 1) they take Delta insurance and 2) they have early appointments (starting at 7 AM, although they are difficult to get). I have been once and absolutely agree that the front desk staff are miserable, but the dentist (Dr. Kim) was quite nice and seemed knowledgeable. I was scheduled to go back yesterday at 7 AM and got a call 45 minutes prior to the appointment saying there was no hygienist scheduled (seems like they should have known that prior to less than 1 hour before), so now I have to wait another month to get in. However, after reading the above reviews, I might just find a new dentist. read more

When you have a place with many different dentists, opinions will vary. My experience over the years has been very positive with Gateway Dental. I have a lot of options with my dental plan so I don't have to go there, I choose to go there. I work a few blocks away and lost my dentist because she decided to stop participating in my dental plan. I had hundreds to choose from and wasn't having any luck finding a replacement. I asked around my office to see what was up and some said they went to Gateway Dental and saw Dr. John Kim. I decided to give it a try and if I didn't like it, no harm, no foul, just a few x-rays. Scheduling: Gateway Dental offers early morning and late evening appointments. That is always a plus for me. Personally, I prefer at 7:30 AM appointment before I really get going with my day. Office staff has been easy to work with in terms of finding the right date. In the years I've been going there, there have only been two emergencies in my family. My child was injured at school and had to be seen the same day by Dr. Kim. No problem. We were in a few hours after I called. The other emergency was with me - for some reason, my tooth decided it would explode for no apparent reason. Since I wasn't in pain, I made an appointment for the next day but I feel fortunate that was possible and know they would have seen me the same day if necessary. Location: As I've said, I work nearby and it's convenient for me. However, if you drive, you have to deal with parking, particularly near Seattle Municipal Tower, Columbia Center, Bank of America Tower, etc. Office Space: It's everything I would expect to see in a dentist's office. The one nice thing is having a view of Puget Sound while you get work done. Even from the 16th floor, it's a nice way to ease anxiety. Dentists: Dr. Kim is my regular dentist and serves my entire family. Prior to that, another dentist at Gateway served my child. Dr. Kim is respectful of our time, listens to our issues, and comes up with a tangible plan quickly. He is non-judgmental while being clear about the consequences of not doing what he tells you (I've been NOT getting my wisdom teeth out for over a year because I'm terrified). I've also seen Dr. Kuo and experienced a high level of service. Staff: I've already mentioned my experience with scheduling, which is done by the front desk staff. In terms of dental assistants, they all do a good job but I have my favorites. They seem to work well with Dr. Kim which goes a long way to everyone's hand being on and around my mouth. Everything seems to be well organized and run smoothly. Often, the assistants are doing the prep and closing work and the dentist comes in for the middle. In a lot of ways, I think their jobs are extremely important. Referrals: The one downside (which isn't a downside for me but may be for others) is that depending on the kind of surgery you need to have, they may need to refer you out. Overall, I look forward to continuing with Gateway Dental for many years to come. read more

I went here for four years when I had braces put on as an adult. I had Dr. Redmond, granted I don't know what to expect but I had four of my permanent teeth extracted and they weren't able to close all four gaps. I went back here I guess because I like the idea of familiarity or I am just stupid. I had to do an extensive cleaning because I was without insurance for a good while. I had one half of my mouth done at a time with two VERY different doctors. The first guy was awesome I don't remember his name but he was a young Indian or Asian guy, he talked to me to make me feel comfortable and made the experience as enjoyable as possible. The other half of cleaning was done by G. Glenn Buchanan. I need my wisdom teeth extracted and they gave me a referral to a surgeon I don't really care so I asked Buchanan for a referral to a different person and he had the nerve to give me back talk, as if I had told him that HE had done a sh*tty job. I don't know why he took it personally but it was 7 in the am and it ruined my entire day. I love the other staff there its too bad one bad apple spoiled the whole experience for me. read more

I have been with this office for long time sine they were in Seattle Municipal Tower. It was good until last time I visit in mid 2020. They charged me additional fees without letting me know. They billed me incorrectly even though I already talked to them at the time I visited. Talked to front desk lady who could not help to fix the billing errors then talked to the office manager and she couldn't fix the errors at that time. She said she needs to write to corporate...well it took few weeks and I still got incorrect statement. Needed to call back 2 times to have it fixed. Hope I won't receive any bill from them. I was really excited to use a dentist located in my building. Sadly my experience has terrible. I was sold on an 2 part deep cleaning, where they numb half your mouth. The assistant who numbed the first time did a terrible job, very painful getting the injections, bad bedside manner. The dentist who preformed the deep cleaning did do a thorough job, but I felt quite traumatized after wards. The second appointment for the deep cleaning was with a hygienist. The ultra sonic wand was used much less thoroughly, with poor results. I had some scale on teeth that was left after the cleaning. The previous cleaning removed it on the other side of my mouth. I called to complain, left a message 4weeks ago. I still have not heard back. To me this says that they do not care one lick about providing good customer service. I don't think I'll be back. Today is Labor Day 2016 and my dentist, Dr. Kim at Gateway Dental- now on 2nd Avenue right by Homegrown- just met me to fix a crown that popped off yesterday. It was on for more than 8 years so it wasn't even one that he personally did. Wow. He called as soon as I called their emergency number and was so pleasant and willing to come down in the middle of a holiday. I am leaving on a long trip tonight and couldn't wait for the office to open. And the cost was nothing. His dentist wife even came to help. I was recommended to Gateway through a co worker since we literally worked next door to Gateway. I was really nervous the first time going only bc I dread going to the dentist and getting my gums all tore up by the hygenist. But I'll admit I've been going to Gateway for a good 5+ years. I enjoy having Dr Kim as my dentist and Anh-Thu as my hygenist. Shes pretty gentle around the gums and Dr Kim is very laid back and chill who seems very passionate in what he does. The few problems I've had with Gateway have always been resolved in a timely manner. When I had an insurance issue/billing problem Monica was always on top of things and getting it resolved but also when I had a hygenist who was really aggresive when I went in for a cleaning I noticed he wasnt there on my next visit which shows that they do look out for their patients. read more

To say this place has offered me the best overall dental services in my life is an understatement. Not only had Dr Buchanan explained things perfectly, regarding my options with a failed tooth and a separate crown I needed, but the crown itself is of superior quality somehow over other crowns I have. It feels like a real tooth. The Dr found an infection I had under an apparent failed root canal, and that's scheduled to be fixed by Dr Wang, and all options were explained excellently. And on top of all that, Monica in the billing department is my hero, giving me information (due to recent changed coverage) that has literally saved me over $2000.00. I love these guys! A 3/15 update: By the way, I am not dating Monica, nor is she a friend I hang out with or know personally. But I have to say she just once AGAIN saved me a lot of money. I went to Gateway for 7 years while living in Seattle. As a person who has had a great need for dental care, I could not have found a better provider to help me with my needs. Basically, I had a mouthful of old dental work that needed to be updated along with some fairly severe new problems that needed to be taken care of. Monica, the clinic director set up a comprehensive treatment plan and schedule. Even another bonus was that, during this treatment period (over 4 years) I lost my dental insurance. Monica helped me find an affordable outside provider that worked with them and who also extended good coverage. The Dentists: Over the course of time was treated, I have seen 4 dentists. I can't remember my first dentist, but I have been treated on a regular basis now by Dr Kim. He is the best dentist I think I have ever had. He is careful, efficient, gentle, and really nice. I also have had multiple root canals performed by both Dr Buchanan and also by a newer addition to the office, Dr. Cubenas. I guess it is as a result of these two doctors that I can safely say I have never really felt like a root canal was a terrible, awful thing. In addition, the dental hygenists here are great! Now I have moved to San Francisco and I am really sad to no longer be able to go there. I highly recommend this extrememly organized, friendly, professional, intelligent group for all your dental needs, both children and adults. read more

Just left Gateway paying over $700 for a bone graft that is not covered in my insurance. Monica's words, "you said you'll think about it?" on Friday 3/23/12 about getting my tooth #32 pulled. I said, "no, don't need more work on it, just pull it." It's the back of my mouth. I have other teeth that needs to be pulled. Today at 7am had the appointment, the doctor never asked me if I wanted a bone graft, in the middle of the operation I hear the assistant will apply the bone graft, not thinking about the price or what we discussed on Friday. What's protocol? Where's the procedure on paper so I see it and the doctor knows exactly what is to be done today. Do they go by he said she said. Especially when my insurance doesn't cover it. Just go by memory? I think he said maybe and then ask on the operating table? Bone graft or no? Shouldn't I see the bill before we go ahead. She rushed this appointment because I'm flying on an airplane in two days, but I'm going to be in pain anyway from the surgery. What a silly mistake. And they had to chart me teeth twice? Once on Friday and then today, Monday. $700 difference today, for someone who makes $700 every two weeks. For a bonegraft that I don't need, thanks Gateway! read more

I chose Gateway Dental because when I lived in Seattle, I took my job so seriously that there was no way I was going to leave my office for half a day just to get my teeth cleaned... and Gateway Dental was only 3 minutes from my office. Anyway, I think they do a great job, and I still drive all the way from Westport to get my teeth cleaned here. First of all, when I first met Gateway Dental, it was my first dental visit in about 4 years (did I mention I took my career to seriously?), and they didn't harass me about it, just spent the extra 45 minutes to clean 4 years of plaque off my teeth, and then complimented me for having such nice teeth despite my lack of dental care. The only major issue I had was that one dentist recommended I get my wisdom teeth removed, and referred me to a surgeon. I never got around to it, and when I went back (6 months later for a cleaning and check up) the other dentist (I just see whoevers available, I'm not married to any one doctor) who saw me that day told me that my wisdom teeth were great, but if I wanted to, he could pull them right there in the office. I figured what the heck, and told him to go ahead, and literally, like 10 minutes later, he had pulled my two top wisdom teeth and it was nothing like all the wisdom teeth horror stories I have heard in my life (and on a side note, holy crap, wisdom teeth are huge). Anyway, I was healed within 3 days, and I think that dentist rocks. Moral of the story, 5 stars, mostly for a great location, super clean office, friendly staff, and the best view ever while getting my teeth cleaned. So good its worth the 2-1/2 hour drive into the city. Disclaimer: I have great dental insurance, so I can't speak to their billing practices except to say that I've never had to pay more than a menial copay. read more
