I came into town for my cousins wedding, and wanted to find a salon that could do an up-do for me. I went for a walk in the neighborhood and found Gary Manuel Salon. Immediately the staff was friendly and professional. I had a special request to find a stylist that knew how to do finger waves and they set me up with Derrick. Derrick was great! He was personable and his attention to detail was impressive. He is also an beauty educator, so he knew to try new techniques and worked flawlessly. I know that I can be opinionated Virgo, so DERRICK IS A GEM! I also had an awesome make up artist (I'm sorry that I forgot her name) touch up my make up. She has been in the industry for many years and was also a pleasure to work with. I really enjoyed my morning with this salon staff. I felt welcomed when I arrived thanks to an attentive reception staff and I felt like a million bucks when I left thanks to a talent staff of stylists. I have been getting my hair cut by Heather at Gary Manuel for over the past year. After moving to Seattle in August of 2006 I didn't know which salon to go to and my hair was starting to get pretty shaggy. After getting a bad haircut at Celsius Salon near Northgate I was reluctant to try other salons in Seattle. Thankfully, favorable reviews of this salon convinced me to try it out-- I am so pleased I found Heather at Gary Manuel. I have probably been in to see her five times since I started going to the salon (plus a number of times for my free fringe trim) and everytime she has done an outstanding job. She is fun and personable and is always up for trying new cuts. She is great at making suggestions when I'm not sure how I want her to cut my hair and I always leave the salon pleased. Love Gary Manuel- they are very high quality without being stuffy. All of the stylists are highly trained and very professional. I have seen Heather who is a wizard with razor cuts for female hair and so much fun to work on hair color with. I currently see Ashley- don't let her age fool you. Love going to Gary Manuel. I went there originally from a Living Social Deal and have been there every 2 to 3 weeks ever since to see Karlie Baptie for either a cut or color. She really takes great care of me and I get compliments on my haircuts all the time. I recommend this salon highly...great location with street parking usually available and every time I come in, I am greeted warmly. Let me start off by saying that I haven't paid for a haircut in 3 years....I just moved here and one of my best friends in FL was also a stylist, so I couldn't get her to let me pay (not that I'm complaining). So, I've been putting off getting a haircut for several months now - but I couldn't wait any longer, and so I came to Yelp to find some referrals. There are some salons right in my neighborhood that probably give fantastic cuts, but range roughly $50-$75 for a ladies haircut. Hard to go from free to $75.....so I started looking for alternatives. Rudy's is just down the street, but for some reason I was apprehensive, and so after some research, I settled on Phase 3. So, finally to the review! I was greeted by a friendly guy at the front desk and offered tea or water - then given a dressing room to change into the obligatory (but nice) smock....a few minutes later and my stylist appeared, ready to cut my locks. She was no nonsense, which was fine by me (I don't need to chit chat and I think she sensed that and was relieved). I gave her an idea of what I wanted done - a large departure from what I came in with - and she gave me a fantastic cut. Trendy, but cut so that I can make it work for visiting clients. All for $27! Yes, that's right, $27! And they use all Aveda products - I was encouraged to purchase the products used, but not in an aggressive way (I passed and it was no problem at all). I would highly recommend Phase 3 for your next cut. I'll be going there again once this one needs some adjusting. read more

David did the best job on my hair color last week. He was friendly, confident, and very relaxing. I would go back for the scalp massage alone! He colored my roots and matched it perfectly to my current hair color. Plus it was a very reasonably price. I thought I would have to pay a lot for such great service, but I was pleasantly surprised when I payed out. I will be going back to see David at Gary Manuel in the future. read more

I currently wear my hair short and it is fine with no curl. Somehow Stephen makes it look great every time I see him. How fortunate I was to be first booked with Maria, way back when she was at Gary Manuel Phase 3. I'd been in Seattle for about 8 years always looking, looking, looking for just the right stylist - you know, "the one." I didn't hesitate for a second to follow her when she moved to the main salon. Now, 4 to 5 years later, I know for sure I've found "the one." I haven't written a review until now because I wasn't sure how I'd be able to describe just how good she is. Maria's amazingly talented -- it is obvious that her career as a stylist is a perfect fit that enables her to use her passion and creativity to make a difference in people's lives. I can say that because she did that for me! In the years I've been seeing her I've been through a lot and she's been there with me every step of the way, encouraging me, cheering for me, pushing me outside of my comfort zones (when I desperately needed to be), and I always walk out of that salon feeling better about myself than when I came in. I always love what she does with my hair - cut and color - and other people love it, too. I receive compliments all the time! Maria encourages me to try new things but she always respects my boundaries. I've never, ever walked away from her chair having had a bad experience...even an "ok" experience. My bridesmaids, mom and I got our hair done here for my wedding, and the service was above and beyond anything I've ever experienced. Truly exceptional! We had brought a bottle of champagne to make mimosas while we were getting our hair done, but I didn't have time to grab orange juice since I was a little scattered the morning of the wedding. Maria and Lucca went to the store to get us orange juice and made sure we were relaxed, had mimosas and enjoyed a really great experience. Two of my bridesmaids didn't like their hair, and Maria went out of her way (and took time she didn't have) to make sure they felt beautiful and had their hair done just right. Gary Manuel is my great hair on a budget secret. Seriously. I have medium/long hair and a haircut never runs me more than $25. That's insane! Plus, my hair always looks great and they give excellent scalp massages. I've been to other beauty colleges, and I'll never go back. At Gary Manuel, the students are always professional, and the instructors are committed to your "spa experience" as well as their student's learning. I've gotten my legs and eyebrows waxed there as well, and I have nothing but good things to say about either experience. One thing to remember is that because they are students and need to have their plan approved several times throughout the process, the whole thing can be time consuming. Bottom line: 100% worth visiting for any of the services that they offer, but make sure you're going on a day you don't have a pressing engagement immediately afterwards. Park accordingly! Visited GM - Phase 3 today, for a foil and cut. After mentioning to the receptionist that I had long, naturally curly hair, she suggested Maria and it could not have worked out better. Maria was AWESOME! She did a combo of highlights/lowlights to help blend all those pesky gray hairs. I have a lot of hair and she was incredibly fast, professional, and also very personable. Maria spent a perfect amount of time getting to know more about me, but also allowed me to just sit and enjoy some relax time. Sometimes when you have long hair, there is a certain level of worry that the stylist might take off too much. Not once did I ever feel like that with Maria. In fact, I felt so comfortable with her abilities, I told her to do what she thought best. Included in the salon "experience" -a lovely cuppa tea, relaxing hand massage, euphoric scalp massage, and great take-away styling tips. I even got a compliment from Gary himself on my way out the door. Which made me feel even more special when I stepped back out onto the city streets. The pricing is really reasonable, since Phase 3 employees are earning their eventual spot into the main GM salon. My only regret....I didn't go sooner. :-) read more

Left to its own devices, my hair is a puffy frizzy disaster. Before I landed at Gary Manual Salon, I'd tried everything from harsh straightening treatments to perms (uh, yeah) and of course countless (and expensive) products. Michelle (along with the fabulous GM team--thank you Kathryn!!) has changed all that. I now see Michelle about once every 6 weeks for assorted combinations of color/highlights, cuts, and Keratin treatments. My hair has never looked better--it's healthy and manageable and I've even succeeded in growing out my bangs! (It takes a seriously great haircut to make that happen!). I cannot find enough good things to say about my experience over the years at Gary Manuel. I started working with Sarah Marsh at the Gary Manuel Institute a few years ago when she was a student and have been a loyal client since then. She has transitioned me between various hair lengths (short, medium, SHORT!, long) and colors(brown, blonde, BLONDE!, red) and made me look and feel beautiful with every change. I have fine but thick wavy hair and Sarah has always taken that into account when suggesting a new hair cut and styling options. She does a great job of getting a feel for you as a person and suggesting a change that you love and never thought of. I came back to her after a brief stint of working with another stylist with fried and broken bleach blonde hair. She helped me to get it back to a color I loved and helped repair what hair could be saved and help me quietly mourn what couldn't. I've been going to Gary Manuel for 5 years now. My hair dresser is Dan and he is really great. He's amazing at what he does, but he's also really nice. I always leave the hair salon in a good mood because of Dan's contagious laughter. The staff is very professional and welcoming. It is a little high end, but everyone is so down to earth and friendly! They really pay a lot of attention to detail - offering you drinks when you walk in, quickly attending you, and super flexible. First off, I have never had my hair cut in a salon before. Secondly, I had never had my hair short before! All on all, I was a bit nervous for this experience. The salon is upscale, but not snooty. Everyone I interacted with was sweet and professional. From phone communications to the stylist to the salon itself, this place took care of everything beautifully! The stylist Shannon was an absolute darling, and SO kind. She listened to what I wanted, worked the details out with me, gave me a fabulous, creative cut, AND taught me how to best recreate it at home! What do I like about Maria Espinoza? Um, everything. I have LOVED every haircut I've gotten from her. She is an artist with hair! (And other media.) She is highly skilled! She listens to what I say (about my hair and other things), and remembers it. She makes me look really good! At one of my recent appointments, several of her other clients were in the salon. All of us were very different: different personal styles, different hair types, and all of us had awesome hair. She's also funny and interesting to talk to, which is a nice bonus. Let me start this review with a note - I have got regular Keratene treatments before, and this time after a year I planned to try Brazilian blowout. I researched a lot as I would be spending a lot of money on this and that too regularly (the treatment stays for 10-12 weeks with post treatment care). Finally I trusted Gary Manuel salon. I visited this newly opened Pioneer Square outlet on 23rd November, a day before my wedding anniversary to get a Brazilian blowout. I was very scared as I did not want to ruin my hair prior to my anniversary day. Before starting the treatment I showed Derek my previous pics (after getting keratene) and the kind of look I wanted. My specialist was Derek and I was payed $500, $350 for the blowout and an additional $80-90 for Shampoo/Conditioner and around $60 for Tip. I happily took the shampoo/conditioner and payed gratuity as I know post treatment care is important. Now lets start with the happenings, 1. I reach the salon and am greeted by Derek's assistant. 2. The shampoo starts and the assistant is literally pulling my hair. She then puts a note that I have sensitive scalp for my future visits. 3. The treatment starts - The assistant comes back twice to Derek asking for the mix composition. How much to add what and what needs to be applied. At this point I get a bit scared that may be I did a wrong thing. 4. The treatment is completed, in 45 mins, which was bit surprising. and I was advised not to shampoo my hair for 3 days. On 26th November, I shampooed my hair and I see that the hair is no longer straight and had lot of frizz!! I immediately called the salon and they asked me to come on 2nd December at 8AM. The caller lady also tells me that it is not a straightening therapy and Brazilian blowout is only to remove frizz!! I have not visited the salon again as I just do not have faith anything will happen. I feel bad that my $500 is wasted here. By far one of the best haircuts and colors I have had in years, which makes this pricey place worth every penny. Dan did an amazing job the first time I saw him and did an even better job fixing a haircut gone awry by another salon. His eye for color is amazing as he mixes highlights and lo-lights to compliment my complexion and keep my blonde color looking naturally blended and not forced. He layered my hair all over to frame my face and kept my hair looking youthful while allowing me to keep my length. I loved my hair so much afterward that I just want to post flyers, scream at the top of a hill, and run around with my big smile shouting "Dan is a stylist god!". I figure I'll budget my money wisely to afford a top notch do. Major, major rave for Heather! She's been my stylist for several years, after I saw a friend's sensational cut and inventive color. I feel that I can trust Heather completely...whether I walk in feeling indecisive (most of the time) or knowing exactly what I want. She is undaunted by my very, very thick hair and has creative ideas about how to get it to look and feel it's prettiest and healthiest. The haircuts always grow out wonderfully, and I can manage to recreate the look at home because she gives me great 'at-home' tips along the way. BTW, Heather is at the main salon, not Phase 3. I am going to be short and sweet....I love this salon. they have amazing service! Specifically, Maria is amazing. She is great with ALL hair types and her services are all executed with precision , true artistry and care! I have ethnic hair (3b/c - which is similar curls to Jewish, Spanish. biracial/ black hair types - which varies, I know) and not only is she GREAT with my hair, but has made it a priority to really understand the nuances of textured and/or naturally curly hair. She has helped me rock it straight and then when I was tired of that she was able to help me transition back to natural. My hair looks so good and healthy right now. She also is part of the texture team who's mission is to understand and specialize in clients with ALL types of hair including textured. GM's attitude towards textured hair far exceeds many mainstream salons. Remember that when you go to GM they are progressive and really give to the community and their upcoming stylist. A newer stylist will work directly with a seasoned stylist as part of their community and training efforts. Don't be surprised if you are washed by a new stylist. Be open to this because the process really works! Best part, Maria is committed to your happiness. She will make sure you are satisfied and takes feed back well. she truly has the philosophy that your feed back will help her grow and service you in the future. I'd been looking for a new hair salon ever since Mode and Seven both shut down. I was super excited when this one opened up so close to my office! Unfortunately it was a big letdown so I'm still searching for a another one. My haircut itself was okay. No major complaints, which is the only reason I gave this place two stars. However, I usually get my hair layered and didn't this time at the suggestion of the hairdresser. In retrospect I wonder if it was to save on time, as I did not like this one as much as my typical cut. The appointment was double booked and no one told me until I was sitting in the chair with wet hair and had been awkwardly waiting for 10 minutes. Had I been informed at any point beforehand, I would have gladly rescheduled. There's no reason it should take an hour and a half for a trim of straight hair with no layers, no bangs. Afterwards when I asked the woman at the front desk if a 90 minute haircut was standard here, she timidly responded "yes, haircuts are 45 minutes long" a few times - a contradictory statement which did not help resolve my confusion and annoyance. And I don't know if it was because he was stalling, but the trainee who dried my hair was holding the hair dryer to my scalp til it hurt from the heat. Not to mention he kept hitting my head with it. I've had better experiences at the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and that was less than a third the price. read more

I have been thinking about this review for months, debating about how I really felt about this in between haircut.... I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate it! Did I mention I HATE it? I decided to give this place a shot after a haircut gone wrong, and I have been going to Gary Manuel for about a year, and it had been decent up until January. I was seeing Collins, and although the haircuts were acceptable, I definitely wasn't jazzed about them and I never left thinking "damn, this hair looks good, I am taking it out tonight." They were the best that I could find and better than the previous so I stayed. With that said, there was not a time that I got my cut done that I didn't have to go back a day or two later and get something fixed, shape, strays, whatever.... Disappointing. Not only am I tipping all over again, but I am wasting additional time on something that should have been done right the first time. Fast forward to January. There was part of the a-line on the back of my head that was longer than the rest, it touched my collar - the other side didn't, I wanted the neck line trimmed for a party we were going to over the weekend... Collins was off, I thought to myself "this place is solid, there should be someone who can get er' done, I mean this is child's play, it's a neck trim for god's sake; there can be no way they can fuck it up, right?" WRONG!!!! I saw Michelle. She gave me the ABSOLUTE, WORST HAIRCUT (which was supposed to be a neck trim) EVER, LITERALLY. I sit down in the chair and say "I am growing my hair out, I just want the neck trimmed for a party," she says "no problem, that's easy." Apparently not, by the time she was trimming on a side I could see it was too late. I literally lost it, I started crying, tears were just trickling down my face and after some dialog, she says to me "well, obviously there is nothing I can do for you right now, how about you take the evening to think about how you really want your hair, come back tomorrow and have someone else help you." What the fuck? Here's the part that just has me floored, I am crying and she is already hiding somewhere.... I was going to just leave, but then thought to myself, "this is bullshit, she doesn't get to fuck up my hair and then act like I am the asshole because I am upset." I decided that even though there was nothing that could be done for this mess, I wanted to talk with the manager, which I did. I ended up in the back office, sobbing - as in gut wrenching sobs. I had worked so hard, the last 6 months growing it out, and in one fatal swoop, it's back to ground zero. And on top of that, I was the bad guy? The manager on duty was Vanessa, she was the only good thing about this fiasco. She felt terrible and was so sympathetic, and apologetic, not only for Michelle's shitty attitude, but for the obviously hack job she managed to "create." Vanessa even had the extensionist come in and see if there was something she would do - the fist thing out of her mouth was "oye" and the final answer was no. Back to Collins to try and get it all straightened out and try to salvage what's left. We spent two months coming up with a plan and a little snip here and a little snip there. She tried. The last adventure ended up in flames.... She ended up adding her own choppy touch and sent me on my way. I followed up with her and made a repeat visit to have her check it out and guess what, I got the, da da duh, wait for it: "You're just going to have to grow it out" speech. OMG, serious? I broke up with her on the spot. How many visits does one stylist get to say "we are working on growing out the old haircut, etc,., etc." At some point, they become involved and responsible for the mess, you can only blame it on another stylist for a few visits.... My hair looks best when: a) I'm asleep, or b) I'm wearing a hat. Every other time, I cannot tell you how pissed I still get. A short shitty haircut just turns into a grown out shitty haircut. I should mention, GM said they would comp my haircuts for a while, to try and work it all out. Um, thanks, that's awesome, but I would rather have skipped all of that just to have a stylist do it right. So to recap: 0-8 months w/Collins, Mediocre everything after, TERRIBLE Vanessa, AWESOME and the reason I am giving GM a star. I am soooo disappointed, I really, really, really, really tried. I kept coming even though I wasn't sure about it, I saw more than one stylist too.... OMG - WHERE ARE ALL THE COMPETENT STYLISTS, THE ONES WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO, VS. JUST A "CAREER"?????????? PS. As a funny side note: I love the institute, I have been there a dozen times for color, and haven only left happy and healthy. Hmmm, there's an idea. read more

My last colorist at another salon retired and I was assigned a new one. My last dye job with the new colorist was an absolute disaster. I ended up with three unintentional different colors on my long hair. That was super frustrating for me because I am not one of those fun, bold people that dye hair in beautiful bright colors. All I want is to look like my boring self by covering the greys my natural color, that is all. Since I was due for a cut and color and Gary Manuel opened the Pioneer Square location, which happens to be 2 blocks from where I work, I decided to give it a shot. I met with David and explained to him what happened to my hair and he was incredibly patient listening to my drama. He then gave me 3 detailed options of how to tackle my issue while taking into consideration the health of my hair and also my budget (my hair is extremely dry from decades of coloring it, which causes a lot of breakage as well). We decided on a single process color but in 3 different colors that would correct the different areas damaged by the old dye job accordingly while remaining true to my roots, pun intended. The final result was fantastic! David said that it will probably take one more session for all the signs of the old dye job to be gone but I can't find any trace of the disaster that it once was. I love my stylist... I realize I do not rave about her enough mostly because she is mine... all mine... Karlie you rock socks... I am loving the blue we did this go round. Also anyone with long hair fear not. She will not whack it off unless you ask her. My hair is so healthy since I have been with her and I have gone red, purple, magenta, burgundy, blue... it still is long and shiny... she won't sugar coat it, she won't damage it, she will tell you what is possibly. Love this place! I started going here on the advice of a friend back in 2000. I started going to a stylist, Theresa, who was in the training portion of the salon (Phase Three) & when she graduated, stayed with her. I've had probably 100s of haircuts & colors there & have been pleased every time. A lot of that is thanks to Theresa of course, but I also like the atmosphere - though sometimes very busy, someone up front always takes your coat, offers you water, tea or coffee & keeps you posted about the wait (if there is one). The few times I had a hair "emergency" (read: I waited too long to get a haircut then expected to get an appt pronto), I had other stylists & both times had good experiences even though they weren't my "regular" person. They had all my notes, had clearly spoken w/ Theresa, etc...I always feel at home & that the service are worth every penny (not inexpensive!) read more

I came here to donate hair to Locks of Love. Derik was fantastic and so helpful. I was nervous because I haven't had short hair since I was 5. He was teaching, so I heard the technique tips that put me at ease. He's sweet and professional. I've gotten tons of compliments from everyone. read more

This salon is great and the service is probably the best I have ever had. I ALWAYS walk out happy with my services. I always have that problem where I have an idea in my head about what I want done to my hair,but am not able to articulate this to the stylist very well. Dena my stylist at G.M. practically reads my mind and just does exactly what I want and sometimes does stuff I didn't even know I wanted. They have a good selection of product and they carry the entire Aveda line. The staff is really friendly and accomodating. I have never had a bad experience here.It is on the pricey side,but you get what you pay for. read more

I've been there several times for both cut and color. Recently I've had Audrey cut my hair. She's done an excellent job. It's a nice salon and very reasonably priced. They have tea, water, etc available as well as magazines and all the stuff you'd find at a regular salon. I've never been to the actual Gary Manuel salon but I'm guessing that it's phenomenal if they're to go above and beyond Phase 3, their training salon. I'd highly recommend it! read more
