I have not found a better eye brow aesthetician than Marita! She is the ONLY person I trust to do my brows and I have received so many compliments on my eyebrows!! Everyone wants to know where I get them done... Look no further! If you are looking for "eyebrows on fleek" get them done by Marita. The Gary Manuel salon is so fabulous! I was greeted with a smile, offered an ice water (with cucumber) and offered a seat. I waited for no more than 2 minutes before Marita came to the front, greeted me with a huge smile and walked me back. The waxing station is very clean! Marita wears gloves and is very gentle and calming during what can be an uncomfortable process. Everyone is so incredibly kind at this salon! The prices are very reasonable and comparable to other salons in the area. I will definitely be back for some more brow love soon! read more

I had purchased the Tippr voucher for 2 haircuts, using one back in July and one this past weekend. Natalia was my stylist for both cuts and I'm disappointed to admit that the whole experience was probably one of the worst I've had. My cut in July involved chopping off about 8 inches of my super-thick, long hair. I was training for an athletic event and wanted something easy to manage for the summer. She listened to my story and proceeded to chop off the hair. Only, she didn't measure and went about 1-2 inches shorter than I had wanted. I have a round face, so the front of my hair SHOULD be lower than my chin. Simple rule, really. Nevertheless, I shrugged it off and figured it will grow back anyway. Forward 5 months later to this past Saturday. My hair grows really, really fast, so it had already come down past my shoulders. I miss my mid-back-length hair in all its thick glory, so I told her from the get go that I wanted to continue growing out my hair, but wanted to just style the existing length a bit differently. I had seen an asymmetrical cut on Lauren Conrad, where the front layers touched her collarbone and the cut gently faded up towards the back. The back touched the bottom of her neck. I had meant to bring in a picture, but in my rush I forgot. I described the cut as much as I could to Natalia and she seemed to understand. I think I mentioned a few times how much I missed my long hair and how last time she cut it a bit too short. She nodded and smiled the whole time. Little did I know, the light was on, but no one was home. She started cutting in the back and pretty much was talking the entire time, so I was distracted (probably my fault--I should have been paying more attention, but excuse me for trusting her!). I noticed she went pretty short up the nape of my neck, but again figured she knew what she was doing. She continued to talk and cut, and talk and cut. 10 minutes later, I checked in the mirror and to my horror, I had a chin-length bob. I had also aged about 15 years and all my gorgeous black hair was on the floor. My instinct was to cry, but I held it back and let her dry it out. Needless to say, I was crushed to see a) all my hair cut off, and b) a cut that was probably the least flattering style I could possibly get. Again to reiterate, any stylist worth her scissors would know that chin length hair is NOT flattering on round faces, especially for women in their 20s. It makes you look rounder and older. My 15 year old brother could have told her hat. So here I am today, hurt that I have to wait at least another 6-8 months before I regain some semblance of proper hair. I could have thrown a fit in the salon, but from past experience that doesn't get you anywhere. Instead of crying over spilled milk, I'm warning anyone out there that if you get your hair cut by Natalia, be sure to take a ruler and a picture of exactly what you want. She tends to get carried away, and as in my case, can end up with disastrous results. Don't get me wrong; she has the technical skills down pat. Her blending was flawless. But she really needs to be re-taught the "measure twice, cut once" lesson. read more

I am SO pleased! I am a full-time college student who had 12+ inches of hair that I wanted to donate, but I could not afford to go to a nice salon for a stylish cut. It seemed my only options were beauty schools, and having had bad luck with beauty schools in the past, that was not an option I cared to give consideration to. I googled "free locks of love haircut seattle" and Gary Manuel came up in my search. I did not notice any other reviewers saying they had gotten a free cut there, nor did I see anything about it on their website, so I sent them an email, and waited to hear back. And waited. And began to get irritated, thinking if they did not provide this service they could just say so! After more than a week, I found their response hidden in my Spam filter! They had actually responded right away! I emailed them back, and they were always SO quick to respond. I made it clear that I had no money whatsoever, and they treated me just as though I were a high-paying customer. Their emails were prompt, friendly, and accommodating. We finally were able to schedule me an appointment for today with Heather. I was late. I thought I had left in more than enough time to get there, but there was an accident on the freeway, and I'm not overly familiar with downtown anyway, so the detour route I had to take to get there was even more unfamiliar to me. I called about 5 minutes before my appointment to let them know, and they were really understanding. When I arrived about 20 minutes late, they were super friendly, and told me not to worry at all about the time. They gave me a robe, brought me some cucumber water (they offered other beverage options too), and sat me down. I pretty much gave her carte blanche to do whatever she wanted, I just gave her a few ideas that I had in mind, and she agreed with my suggestions. As soon as I sat down, I recommended that if they planned to wash my hair, to cut off the donation length first, because my hair is so easily tangled. They agreed, and said it was the preferred method anyway. First, they banded the hair into sections and cut off the length. Thomas was assisting, and he then took me to wash my hair, including a bit of a scalp massage. When he brought me back to Heather, he massaged my hands and arms while Heather cut my hair. While he was doing that, he was also trying to select a lip color for me. When she was done, he applied an Aveda lip color to my lips. It had vanilla and mint in it, and gave just a very faint little tingle that was pleasant. They were both SO nice. Heather did exactly what I had envisioned for my hair. She didn't rush me at all, either for being late or for the cut being free. They treated me like royalty. I'll be honest - when I first began emailing with them, I thought there was something a little bit sketchy about a professional salon bending over backwards to give someone a free cut, so I wasn't holding my breath that it would all work out. At no point whatsoever was I made to feel guilty or lower class for not having any money, or anything but valued. The cut they gave me was stylish, and they didn't skimp on any of the salon amenities. I definitely recommend Gary Manuel Signature Salon. read more

After a seriously depressing haircut from some lady in U-District I decided to go to a proper salon once my hair grew out. And I am glad I chose Gary Manuel. The entire experience was relaxing and the end results were fabulous. I got a partial foil and it took approximately 2 hours. The hairstylist was very pleasant and made lots of helpful suggestions. She also gave me styling tips that suit the color and highlights I got. All in all very satisfied. I highly recommend this salon and will be going back to them for any future salon services. Edit: March 28,2012 I went here for a second time and the experience was not as great. The stylist I was assigned was extremely unprofessional. I went in for a simple shampoo, trim and style. It took 2.5 hours for the stylish to accomplish this. The stylist also had shaky hands and I was just worried he was going to do something wrong. I think this salon is a hit or miss. I went to Phase 3 three times. It's like a "graduate school" for stylists who have completed school and are "practicing" to work at Gary Manuel. It's a small Aveda shop, and it's quite nice. It doesn't feel cheap, but the prices are very reasonable. Rachel did my color and cut, and she is really, really sweet. The prices are amazing--I think I paid $70 for color AND cut. That's pretty damn good. The only problem was the Aveda color. It just wasn't covering my gray hair. I don't have a lot of it (yet...) but the ones that are there, well, they REALLY STAND OUT because the rest of my hair is black-brown. So the whole point of hair color is to cover these gray hairs, and attempt to look good while doing so. I have no doubt that Rachel is very skilled. She listened to me and did exactly what I asked, with her own advice and expertise thrown in. She was a little aggressive with the layering, though. I've been growing my layers out because it was starting to look like I had two different haircuts goin' on. I'd recommend Phase 3 if you don't have to use color to COVER anything. I would be choosy about the stylist, though. When I called, I asked for someone who had been working there for a long time--and almost ready to "graduate" to the Gary Manuel Salon next door. I didn't catch her name, but one of the other stylists was totally ghetto--and in a very bad way. The atmosphere is clean and professional, but having the occasional ghetto stylist in there kind of ruins things. I loved the Aveda hair styling products they used there. I've invested in about ten different types of products, and am happy with all of them. It makes me sad that the Aveda hair color didn't work out...otherwise, I'd still be going there. I've tried so many hair salons and tossed them aside, I really thought this was love....but I had to move on. read more

Rockin' it! I cannot thank Drew, the esthetician at Gary Manuel, enough! During a facial, she saw an area of concern near my temple that she addressed and recommended I have checked out. I went in to my doctor today and had what was labeled as a pre-cancerous area frozen off. The doctor said it was caught early so I'm in good shape! Not only was the facial ahh-mazing, relaxing enough that I fell asleep for a several minutes, but more importantly, Drew's knowledge and experience helped catch what could have been threatening further down the line. I love Gary Manuel. I used to let my hair grow really long, then see Katrin for a really drastic cut - drastic enough to donate my hair. She was great. Awesome conversation, and I would absolutely trust her cutting off 10+ inches from my hair. I was delighted every time. Also for Sunny - my sisters love her, entrusting their hair, as well as their husbands' and sons' hair, with her. Even after moving away from Seattle (to CA and AK), we would go back to Gary Manuel for haircuts. Finally though, we had to tear ourselves away and find new stylists closer to home. Gary Manuel salon isn't cheap - so if you don't want to spend much money on your hair, don't go here. However, it is great value. Yes, you may pay more than other places, but you'll probably get a result you're much happier with - and after all, you do wear your hair with every outfit. I've tried Parker and Natalia and was really happy with both (and I am super picky). The first time I went to the salon, Parker really insisted on making sure my hair colour was EXACTLY right so they would have a record of it for next time. The other staff are also friendly and pleasant. Highly recommend. ***UPDATE*** My stylist Parker just left the salon and Gary Manuel not only sent me a letter to tell me, they also directed me to someone who could recommend a new stylist for me AND gave me a voucher for a free haircut. Thank you first to Prema - your ROTD the other day made me discover this place... and since my hair was looking a little suburbia-ish, I called that it was time for a hair cut. I called yesterday and made an appointment for today... yeay for not having to schedule weeks in advance! I came in and they whisked me right away... no waiting! She listened to what I wanted, and she put in her suggestions (I was pretty breezy about it). All in all, it came out great, and relatively quick for a training salon! Of course they used the wonderful Aveda products, which if I had the money for, I would purchase EVERYTHING THE OFFER. But alas, I cannot. My hair smells and feels great. My hubby also thinks it's cute, so kudos there, too! Only one star taken though - the place was pretty empty (first appointment of the day on a Tuesday) and even then, it felt like I had to scream to talk to her... perhaps the acoustics were a bit much. I get that you want to have it very clean and industrialized (is that even a word??), but I'd like to be able to chat it up while gettin' my hairs did. Heather Dobson, a stylist at Gary Manuel salon, is one of those people. Last year before I started going to Heather, my hair was a mess. I had given up on my hair because no stylist could seem to get it right. I wanted something classic AND edgy. I would try to explain it, but the stylists always made me look like a suburban newscaster or soccer mom. After innumerable disappointments, I decided to save the money: I let my hair grow out, cut my own bangs, and dyed it myself. Then, I met Heather. She was convinced she could give me hair to match my personality. She sat me down and spent time listening to me. She understood what I wanted. She gave me the coolest hair cut and color I have ever had. She managed to walk the fine line between "acceptable at work" and "cool at night." It's a mircacle, really, because NO ONE ELSE has ever been able to figure it out. EVER. Heather is smart, caring, a good listener, and incredibly creative. She knows how to work on problem hair. I've been getting my hair cut at Gary Manuel for more than 10 years. When I lived in Tokyo, I used to come back to get my hair cut in Seattle. I used to say that if I ever won the lottery, I would come to Gary Manuel each morning and have them shampoo my hair and massage my scalp (I'm still waiting on the lottery win). Service is top notch. Nice people greet you. They offer you a protective garment (I wear mine over my clothes while others change in their changing rooms) and something to drink. You usually wait a few minutes -- watch the looping fashion show on the TV screens or surreptitiously spy on the other people getting their hair done. I've had several people do my hair, but my favorites are Amy and Katrin, Both do an excellent job with my cut and color. They make me feel very comfortable even though I'm not metrosexual enough to fit in completely. I like the fact they trim my eyebrows and dye them when necessary -- it's a nice extra touch that they do without me having to ask. The shampoo/scalp massage is amazingly wonderful -- the only hard part is not falling asleep. There is only one bad part and that is the crazy tipping system that goes on in a lot of places. You pay and tip by credit card and then they hand you the cash and a tiny manila envelope with "To" and "From". It makes me feel like I'm sending valentines back in 2nd grade. Give these hardworking people their tip money without making me lick the tiny envelopes (risking a tiny but painful paper cut). Pricing ranges by the stylist, and I've found them all to be very good, so if you want a better value, you can opt for a more junior stylist (Gary Manuel trains its own people). But I'm sticking with Amy (and Katrin if Amy's busy). :) read more

Finally.. a stylist that understands curly, thick hair! I have super long, thick, curly/wavy hair which most people assume would be easy to cut because of the curls ability to 'hide' mistakes - TOTALLY not the case! I have had my hair butchered by more stylists in Seattle over the past 15 years than I can count (and paid +$100 for some of them as well!). And then (thankfully!) I found Christopher Archiopoli at Gary Manuel Salon. He is the first stylist that I have ever known who truly understands the nature of curly, thick hair and loves working with it. For all of you ladies (or guys) out there, I know how frustrating it is to go to stylists who have had zero experience with this type of hair so I recommend that you stop the grueling search and get scheduled with Christopher as soon as possible. I LOVE this salon. When I moved away from my home stylist (across the country) I thought to myself.... Shit - finding a new stylist is going SUCK big time. Luckily I did a little research and found Heather. I am in love. Heather is spunky, sassy, and best of all - she is an amazing stylist. I have gone in there both times not really knowing what I wanted, and I end up leaving looking beautiful and more than satisfied with what she ends up creating. The one time (in WA) that I didn't have time to drive from the Eastside out to Seattle, I went to Seven in Belle Square. OMG what a mess. I regretted it immediately. Heather knows her hair, remembers her clients, writes down exactly what you put on your hair so she knows what to do when you come back. I recently saw Gia at Gary Manuel Salon for my unruly thick CURLY hair, I have to say she did a great job layering and trimming it down, so my usual sphere of a frizzy dome is now sleek and manageable, even weeks after I got it cut. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the woman who cut my hair. What I do remember is thinking my hair cut is fine but being amazed that she washed, cut, and styled my hair in 30 minutes. In hindsight, I don't think it is acceptable or even possible to cut a woman's hair and shampoo and style it in that short of time. Perhaps because I don't have a fancy hair cut she didn't cut very much? Likes: their aveda herbal tea, the front desk staff is very nice, they sell lots of different brands of hair products (not just Aveda) I also find the location in belltown difficult to get to....no easy parking nearby and kinda a hike from everywhere. read more

I've been going to GM for probably 8 plus years now (since college) in Phase 3 Aveda's training salon? I started with Heather when she was just in Phase 3 and have followed her as she's developed and blossomed into "I have to wait 8 weeks to get an appointment with" stylist. I go in never knowing what I want and I just allow her to be creative. I've got dark course hair so the right cut, sheering and texturing is important. Her prices have increased significantly so I try to go to her maybe once every other time. She's awesome if you are into "edgy and different". I had the Victoria Beckham's do way before it became popular! She is excellent w/foils and texturing. When I am feeling frugal I like to go see Serena in Phase 3. She has assisted Heather and does a great job styling and coloring. read more

Clearly these 'training' salons' are a gamble. The first time I had a haircut here it was fantastic. I left with a sexy cut which I got oodles of compliments on. The second time I had a different stylist who really didn't seem to have a clue how to cut hair. She did not understand how to properly layer hair and instead just chopped up my hair on the outside layer! My hair was so unfinished looking that when the stylist moved to take the cape off my shoulders I asked "Are you finished?" She attempted to fix my hair but just seemed unsure of how to proceed. Gary Manuel is a classy place, so when I complained, they offered to fix my hair, but my re-stylist simply evened out the sides (the other stylist couldn't even cut hair symmetrically) and didn't do much for the actual style. I had a third haircut here with my original stylist (he just graduated to the full priced Gary Manuel) and it was really great again. I guess the moral of this story is that you need to get lucky to get a good stylist, but that the good ones move on to the full priced salon. read more

My long hair needed a good chop. A friend recommended Dena at this salon, so i made an appointment with her, not really knowing exactly what i wanted to do with my mop. She was so great! Welcoming, sweet, and really knows hair. She talked me through my options and offered advice, then explained what she was doing while she cut. I also loved the nice scalp massage during the conditioning. So i just got back to my office, and everyone LOVES the new cut! It's a lot shorter, choppy, and just plain looks good. I'd definitely recommend Dena to anyone! Make sure you book in advance, i had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment. The prices differ depending on which stylist you use, but Dena was $50. read more

My favorite stylist, Melissa has always given me the best cut and color. I have yet to find another stylist that I can depend on. Being out of my mind, I went to another salon and had a horrifying experience. I crawled back to Melissa to get it fixed immediately. She happily fixed my hair for me and now, I am getting compliments again. Needless to say, I will never go anywhere else again. I have also had Maria work on my hair as well and she is really good too. Everyone who walks out of this salon looks gorgeous and you can tell by the smiling faces. I also love it that they use Aveda products which are more natural than other haircare products out there. read more

Two reviews in one: Gary Manuel is now offering styling classes for regular folks who love how their hair looks when they leave the salon but can't re-create the look on their own. I attended the round brushing class and have never gotten so many compliments on my hair! I didn't know that I had that much to learn but I learned a ton and (unlike geometry and statistics) I can use this knowledge EVERYDAY! Second part: Tsofia is the color and cut queen. When I started going to GM (many years ago) I sat down and informed Tsofia that I hated my hair and she shouldn't take it personally if I wasn't the most ecstatic client. She transformed my naturally dark never colored hair to a beautiful shade of red. I get compliments on my color from the time I walk out of the salon up until I walk back in for upkeep. It's beautiful even when the color has started to grow out/fade. Her cuts keep my long hair looking healthy and alive. FINALLY!! A place to get pampered! Sure...I'm male, but I've always been known for having good hair. Many years ago, I buzzed off all my hair because I was a poor student. Once I was properly employed, I figured I would get some sense of style back into my hair. I tried many places throughout the years, and was never able to get a proper cut. I know it's tricky to cut thick Asian hair that has a multitude of tough cowlicks, but c'mon! Finally, I decided that if wanted a good cut, I'd have to spend some hard earned doll hairs for it. I bought a deal through LivingSocial for 2 haircuts at this joint, but never used them. Maybe I was a bit timid because this place is pretty posh! A few months afterwards, I finally mustered up the guts to call to make an appointment. I decided I wanted to see Jeff, and realized that I had made an awesome decision by doing so. Since day one, Jeff, has been very attentive to what I've been wanting to do with my hair. I went in with a mop, and walked out nicely coiffed. He's been the designer I had longed for because he actually takes into account all the details that makes you who you are, then bangs out an awesome style just for you. It has gotten to the point where I just let him do what he wants, which I've never done, not even when my mother was cutting my hair. I'm very happy I made the decision to spend my hard earned cash at this place. I get compliments on my cuts all the time, and always leave there feeling pampered and beautiful! Thanks, Jeff! Kami colored my hair last night and I have never been so happy! She listened to what I wanted, made great suggestions and ended up blending 3 colors together, gave me some great highlights and put a toner on that gave me exactly what I wanted. She also recommended dying my eyebrows which I was hesitant about at first but now I will have do do this every time cause I love them! She gives great haircuts and updos too. Kami is an amazing hair stylist and I would recommend her to anyone. Plus, she keeps great company! read more

I came for a balayage and hair cut and spent way more than I normally do to get it done right since there was bleach involved... I was lucky enough to get David! He was professional, kind, had great foresight and was very efficient. He was great at listening and went out of his way to make sure I walked away happy. Front desk staff were a bit awkward at times but friendly enough. They were great at feeding my meter so I didn't get a ticket. ;) Great experience with David! Will be back! 92% of this rating is for my guy Stephen. I'm a loyal hair client. I've stayed with hair dudes longer than husbands. After hooking up with Stephen my hair's potential. Love, love, love this guy. No one understands my bangs like Stephen. Before Stephen, when I was between hair dudes, I tried a less expensive place (name is a number, rhymes with heaven). OMG. what a mess. I'll never try and skimp on hair cuts again. While a cut with Stephen might seem expensive, but the cut lasts longer and I can go in for a bang trim and a hug when I need to. I have been a client of Derik's, a senior stylist and color specialist for over 8 years now and I am in love with the incredible work he does! The minute you walk into the door you are greeted by friendly staff, offered a beverage and then get to relax until your appointment time. For new people, Derik really takes the time to get to know the person prior to doing whatever hair service they are booked for so the client gets the results they want! All stylists give you a hand massage and tantalizing scalp massage when washing your hair. I have always felt very taken care of and treated like family even though it is a large company. Every staff member goes out of their way to make the client's experience as comfortable as possible which is hard to do with the number of people they see on any given day. I've also had other stylists do up-dos for events I've gone to and wouldn't consider going anywhere else for my hair services. I'll continue to see Derik as long as I live in Seattle I recommend this salon without any hesitation! read more

Ok, so i don't normally write reviews, but i have to about my experience. I just moved from South Philly to Seattle on July 4th. I actually sat here and read every review, 8 out of 10 were great and one of the main reasons i decided to go. I assumed my experience was going to be great and my hair was going to look fabulous, Yea Right! I have thick long wavy hair, sometimes coarse. I usually do long layers, with it thinned out a lot and i get blow dried with brushes to be curly. It is very rare that i straighten it. My hair comes to the middle of my back. I had a job interview the next day. I wanted to cut some off for the summer and have a nice blow dry so my hair didn't frizz in the heat. After talking, i decided i wanted to cut 4 inches off, have it thinned out and blow dried straight (not flat ironed). I was so upset with the cut and blow dry. The only thing she got right was the inches. She did not thin out my hair, and she blow dried my hair with a paddle brush! Yes i said Paddle Brush. I even bought the product she suggested. Go figure, i was the sucker. And the kicker, it cost me $136 bucks- for a shitty cut and blow dry. No dye, no highlights, just a hair cut. $136. I could have went to Giovanni & Pileggi and got a fabulous hair cut and an even better blow dry for half the price. I would have been a returning customer, but my experience was awful and i will never go back there. I would fly back home to Philly first before i ever gave that place another chance. read more

They did a wonderful job on my hair I've even did some modeling for their students after this great hair experience they have amazing makeup artists and I use avada products on my unruly ethnic hair its my go to for a quick blowout (´`) hopefully I'll return soon the holidays are coming read more

LOVE my stylist!!! He is a gem & was a godsend after a less than favorable experience elsewhere. Cuts are a dream & gorgeous color & balayage. Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the appt desk & scheduling. 3 times now there has been appt notification for times other than scheduled. Today was only 45 minutes, however last time it was an entire month difference. When I live 45 minutes away that makes a difference. read more
