I didn't have a pleasant experience here. Jane was my stylist, and unfortunately, I was very disappointed with both the service and the overall experience. To begin with, my hair wash felt extremely rushed. She was done washing my hair in barely two minutes. I could see another stylist washing another client's hair nearby and taking the time to do it properly, but nothing of that sort happened with me. Their haircut service description clearly states, "Every haircut includes a consultation, blow dry and scalp massage." There was definitely no scalp massage for me, not even for a minute. Secondly, I found Jane's tone and body language quite snappy and rude. During the consultation, I initially told her I wanted the first layer of my face-framing cut to come down to my chin. Within the first five minutes of her starting my haircut, I mentioned can i actually have it little more shorter than chin. She told me yes that she could always go shorter later and that she was only doing a brief cut initially. When she started drying my hair, I reminded her again that I wanted it shorter, and she said she would do more cutting after drying. However, when she eventually said she was done, I pointed out that she still hadn't cut it shorter. She then snapped at me and said that I had told her I didn't want it short. At that point, I genuinely wondered if she had been even paying attention to any of the conversations we had after she started my haircut. I had also told her that it was my birthday and that I was getting my hair done for my birthday celebration that evening. I specifically asked if she could add curls at the back while styling it so that my hair would at least stay styled through the evening. Unfortunately, the styling was very poor. The curls didn't even last until I got home and were completely gone within an hour. I also realized afterward that my scalp was still oily, which made me feel that my hair hadn't been washed properly in the first place. By then, it was too late for me to wash and restyle my hair before my birthday party that night, which was extremely disappointing. I regret going there for my birthday. Another irritating part of the experience was her long nails repeatedly scratching my neck and face while she worked on my hair. She did apologised once but it still continued happening throughout the service. Overall, I was really disappointed, especially since I had specifically mentioned that this appointment was for my birthday. I definitely won't be returning to Jane, and based on my experience, I would not recommend her for hair styling services. read more

I specifically booked with Dan ( Master Stylist) because he claimed Vidal Sassoon training and experience with precision cutting. I went in explaining that I had just had a disappointing bob haircut elsewhere and was very clear about the look I wanted: a polished geometric bob with a strong perimeter and soft beveled-under shape similar to the reference photos I showed him. Instead of approaching the correction carefully, he flat ironed my hair and cut essentially the entire haircut dry. He told me that if I didn't want significantly more length removed, this was how he would make it look more like the photo I showed him. I also specifically stated that I did NOT want heavy point cutting or excessive texturizing because I wanted to preserve the clean shape and weight of the bob. He argued that point cutting was necessary to create the bevel on the ends. As someone who has gone to an actual Vidal Sassoon salon in NYC for years, this experience did not resemble classic precision cutting methodology at all. The haircut lost the clean perimeter and structured shape I specifically asked for and instead became overly softened and texturized. What made the experience especially frustrating was the defensiveness and attitude when I questioned the technique. Rather than listening to my concerns, he insisted this was "how Vidal cuts are done," which was misleading given the result. I left feeling unheard and disappointed after spending $160 on what was supposed to be a precision correction cut. If you are looking for a true structured bob with classic geometric shape and controlled weight, I would strongly recommend asking extremely detailed questions before booking. read more

I came in with an open mind...left upset. I told my stylist I'd been growing out a pixie, trimming the back for 8 months, trying to get the sides and front to catch up to the back, I said I just need some shape for 1 event the next day. I specifically said to leave the length, and I didn't want a wedge, and I would be wearing a hat for 3 more months until I was ready for a real style in July. She cut the back shorter than the front (!), a slight wedge, so short, with a hat I look like a man, or I'm going through cancer treatment. Without a hat, I look like a Karen with a bad cut. At the boutique I work at, my customers said it was horrid & I should cancel payment. The three things I said I wanted, she did just the opposite. I must have said something to offend her, because this could not be a mistake. The site shows that Nadya is the priciest stylist, and experienced, so it wasn't lack of skill. I guess don't talk about or economy with your stylist? It is so ridiculous looking, I just might cut the front and top and start growing it out all over again. As a male visiting this salon, my experience was a little underwhelming. I know that I have really difficult hair to cut as it is very coarse, thick, and all over the place. So I have been searching for someone who can give it some kind of shape and give me a great haircut. I figured that a salon with a great reputation like Gary Manuel would be a great place to try. First of all, the online booking is really bad. It's 2019, why am I having to fill out an online form to hear back (via e-mail) what is available? Almost all other competitors like (Gene Juarez, Cappelli's, Weldon) have online self-service scheduling where you can easily see who and what is available. Anyway, I was in desperate need to find a new hairstylist so I filled out the form which asked about the day, time, and preferred stylist. I filled out all of the lines. The next day I received an e-mail asking what day and time I'd like to come in for a haircut... Why did I fill out the form in the first place? In other words, if you come here, just call them, it'd be a lot easier. Part of my request was also to see someone who was good with men's haircuts. I know as a male, going to a salon can be hit or miss as they mostly do women's cuts. My hairstylist was very friendly and gave great tips about how to care for my hair which I appreciated. However, during our time she also told me that she "likes a challenge" in regards to my hair. This isn't really what I want to hear about my hair honestly. I kind of want to hear that It's going to look great and you're confident in your skills. She also said "if things don't work out, you should see (another stylist who is good at cutting a certain hair type)". I appreciate that they were open to me seeing the best fit for my hair, but it didn't make me feel easy about what was about to happen. It would've been nice if they rinsed out my hair as well after they cut my hair. She said there was no point since she was going to texturize it and hair was going to get everywhere anyway. I was a little confused why she couldn't just instead rinse it after she texturized it? I give the haircut a 7/10. Overall, my experience as a male at this salon was just kind of meh. The ambiance and customer service was nice. However, the difficulty of booking appointments and the haircut I received was just not up to ~$90 I paid for the haircut (after tip). Would I come back? My first impression was "Wow, it smells like chemicals in here." This didn't bother me for long, however, because soon enough they were hanging up my coat, guiding me to the changing rooms (to put on my robe), and offering me a warm cup of tea to enjoy while I filled out my "new client" form. (Also, waiting area was not filled with the smell of chemicals the second time around.) My stylist was Ashley and she gave me a nice head massage, cut, style for the day and gave me a great suggestion for an easy way to style my hair for those sad days where I have to handle it myself. Several days or weeks after that first appointment I received a letter with a "How did we do?" survey from Gary Manuel Salon. Wow - I've never seen salons put this kind of effort into follow-up! The second appointment went much the same, except that she didn't need to give me a new styling tip. She gave my hair some nice layers and styled it in such a way that made me wish she could just style my hair every day. I enjoyed the conversation and the experience. She's very nice and (based on my experience) does a fine job remembering clients and previous conversations. That "continuing conversation" bit made me remember how wonderful it is to have a regular stylist. (I took a few college years away from being a "regular" anywhere.) On the second appointment I also had an eyebrow wax. It was quick, easy, and low on pain. The gal that handled it (Amy??) introduced one interesting idea - she said she prefers to not wax above the brow because she likes to keep the natural arch. She'll clean it up and all that good stuff, but she prefers to not just rip it all out. A few days after the second appointment I received a card from Ashley thanking me for coming in and wishing me happy holidays. She also included a neat little "Complimentary Cut by Ashley" card so I could gift a friend a free haircut to start the year off. (Expiration date was 12/31 and I got it in late November/early December). I like it! I'm glad I chose to go for a couple of appointments instead of just one because it was the continuation of conversation and two good scalp-massage/cut/style experiences that made me think "I'll schedule my next appointment today." read more

Carrie is a lifesaver: Extension review! I was scheduled with Carrie to have my hair styled for an event just a few days after having some (what I would soon come to learn) botched extensions in by a false advertising stylist at Studio 229 in Capital Hill - avoid avoid avoid!! I asked Carrie if she would give the extensions a once over because I felt like they were peeling! She noted peeling, pulling, weird angles, and extensions place way too high up on my head. She took the time to talk to me about placement, why it's important and how poor placement can cause pain and embarrassment (extensions showing). She styled my beautifully for the event, told me to wait as long as I could because it can be damaging to your hair to take the extensions out to early. I loved the experience of having my hair styled by Carrie so I made a return appointment with her to fix the massacre that was my head. Today, 4 weeks after having the original extensions in, she took them all out (Carrie found extensions that were not ever stuck together!!! WHAT!!??!!) gave my head the most glorious wash and dry and then correctly placed the extensions. What a world of difference! For the first time since having extensions in, I could not feel them. Her response was, "yeah, that's how is should feel..". No pinching, no pulling and to top it off, Carrie was easily able to remove the extension which is yet another sign of really crappy extension work! Carrie, thank you! I recently moved neighborhoods and I had to find someone who could do the magic of the Betty Page bangs on my crazy hair. Believe me, it is no easy task to get the right amount of thickness and bluntness on my crazy cowlicked hair. I was recommended to Ashley. She did an amazing job shaping my bangs into perfection. She did an all over color to cover my grays, and then gave me layers to lighten up my hair for extra wave and bounce. The true test was the first hair washing after I got my hair done which was a day later. When you leave the salon, of course you're going to look great because they've styled your hair into perfection. I blew dry my hair thinking that it was going to look all shaggy because I can't really do the magic of a just-out-of-the-salon look myself. I walked into Gary Manuel Salon (on Westlake) today so excited to finally get my hair done in time for my husband's 50th birthday and our vacation, but unfortunately I walked out and got into my car surprised and disappointed by what I saw in the mirror (I was kind of rushed out as I I think he had another client waiting so I didn't really get a good look). He didn't even show me how it looked in the back and. Just s aid he'd meet me up front after he cleaned his area. The first picture is the picture of what I wanted done. The following ones are ones I took after I already applied a light brown touch up dye to try to cover up the grey that was still there. The stylist didn't apply any color at all. He just bleached my hair, so the grown out grey was still very visible. I understand it would take at least a couple of sessions to achieve the look I wanted, but to pay over $200 and still have the grey hair I was trying to cover in the first place is so very disappointing. I picked up my daughter from her college and she and her friends were so surprised that someone at a salon did this job. Sooo sad and disappointed. read more

Came to this salon for years due to having excellent customer service and my stylist was amazing. Followed them when they moved salons to a less convenient place with far less parking available. Stopped coming due to customer service decline. Called to inquire about an appointment with a stylist and was told I was unable to have my hair dried. When I asked about a price adjustment because I'm African American and I need my hair cut on straight hair. They were unable to understand that need. Previously they only had 1 black stylist in the salon. Very disappointed. This review was removed previously. Hmmmm very strange considering the lack of diversity at this salon and 1 bad review. Please reconsider before removing again because I do have all proof I was a long time client and why Iam no longer a client. After growing out my hair for a year and a half I decided to cut off 12 inches to donate to Locks of Love. I began searching yelp for a salon that was experienced in this and came across Gary Manuel. I yelp messaged the salon and found out that they actually do complimentary cuts when the hair is being donated. The next day I emailed the salon manager to schedule an appointment and the following day I was at the salon getting my hair cut. I generally don't really like getting my hair cut but this was a whole difference experience. Ashley, my hairdresser was very personable and professional. She also gave me some tips for styling and maintaining my new cut. This was definitely the nicest place I've ever gone to cut my hair and it was a real treat considering it had been so long since my last cut. When I came to the salon I wasn't quite sure what the process would be for donating my hair so I brought my own plastic ziplock bag and hair ties. Turns out, the salon handles shipping out the donation to Locks of Love so I all I needed to do was fill out the typical LoL donation form. I thought that not paying for the haircut would be a little awkward but none of the salon employees made me feel that way and seemed to be genuinely happy to help in donating the hair. Michael Diego knows what's up! I was scheduled for a haircut with him because I had read from past reviews that many people have come to this salon for a complimentary haircut for donating their hair. It was the first time I was going to donate and it was going to be the first time I ever cut my hair this short. I was pretty set on my pixie cut, but I was very particular about what I wanted. I brought photos of the haircut I aspired to have and he studied them in great detail. When I was done with my haircut, his details were pretty on point! He even gave me styling tips on different ways I can try styling my hair and I've been having a lot of fun with it! Even though I was donating my hair, they still treated me like a paying customer. They put me in a robe, asked me if I wanted some tea or water, gave me a nice head/neck massage during my shampoo, and Michael only informed me of the different products he was using to style my hair without making me feel like he was pushing me to buy anything. I am not sure how much my haircut would have cost if I wasn't donating it, but after seeing my haircut from Michael, I know I want to come back because his work is worth it! My most all time favorite stylist who I've seen from GM studio and all the way through the main salon is Pepper. She has really great ideas when I'm unsure of what I might want for my new DO. I have really thick hair that grows as fast as grass, so she does an amazing job thinning my hair while keeping length. The staff is great, always ready to check you in, offer a cup of tea or cucumber water. The lobby iis filled with all sorts of Aveda and other products for all of your hair care needs! One word. Nyesha. She can do it all, but most importantly, she can handle my sad, emotionally confused, over processed, wannabe CURLY HAIR. I have naturally curly hair but have done some ungodly things to them in the privacy of my own home. I wanted into the Gary Manuel Salon looking like I had a mop on my head but after Nyesha was done with me, I felt like I could have been part of Cleopatra's entourage! When I first came in I had shoulder length blonde hair. My ends were fried and my Shirley Temple curls were transformed into wet, sad, labradoodle dog curls..I was super curly in my roots but then ramen noodle curls at my ends. I was a hot mess. (RIP curly). Originally I thought I wanted to redo my roots, lighten my hair to a whiter blonde tone but most importantly keep my curls. Nyesha looked at me (one eyebrow up) and shared that if I want to keep my natural curls that I needed to stop bleaching it and let my hair breathe. She then asked if I have ever been short or would be interested in going with a shorter, pixie-like cut and I said: YAS! In the end, Nyesha worked her magic! We didn't touch the color and instead she cut off all my dead ass hair and has revived my curly hair from beneath the grave! The old highlights actually looked legit with my new haircut! I was pleasantly surprised. Most importantly, it was helpful that Nyesha was able to educate me on the steps I needed to take in order to get my curls back and keep them healthy. On September 9th, I had an appointment to get a haircut and a root touch up. I had come in with longer hair, and wanted to get a shorter cut, and had picked a hairstyle that I wanted to match. I showed my stylist an image of the hairstyle I wanted on a model. However, the haircut I received was done very haphazardly and did not match my expectations for matching that hairstyle. Aside from the trimming which was done poorly, the coloring for the hair was also mismatched. I came back for a fixup, but unfortunately they told me that I would have to wait two months in order to fix a portion of the cut, and also they did not fix the color blending of my hair. read more

I've been going to Heather for the last million years (ok maybe 6) and she's so amazing I think she deserves her own review for both color and cut. She has an amazing eye for deep rich brunette tones that are consistently amazing. But Heather referred me to Ashley, the whole point of the review. Ashley did my bridal hair and I was so incredibly happy with it. I did a the hair trial at the SLU location and it was absolutely beautiful. I went to Trader Joe's afterwards and a lady there said, "Your hair is too beautiful for just Trader Joe's!" Yeah, I sure agree, lady. I wish I was doing something else with such a creation! The day of my wedding she was able to recreate the masterpiece and it stayed perfectly in place throughout the night, even on the windy beach for pictures prior to the event. Her and I looked at Pinterest pics (bring in pics for inspiration!) and I felt like she knew exactly what I want and was able to create it effortlessly. Hair is great. I change my hair all the time, and I am damn lucky it doesn't fall out. Breaking the bank with multiple salon visits is not so great. So here is another one of my fashion budget friendly secrets. Phase 3 is right next to Gary Manuel and it is cheaper because all the stylists are students that are almost ready to graduate. I actually like going to Phase 3 better than going to Gary Manuel oooh la la fancy salon. Phase 3 is more laid back and my stylist and I talk about my hair in a very fashion forward technical way because she is in the midst of studying it. I like being involved in the chemical process and thinking about trends and fashion. Plus, the students run by their ideas and talk to a grand master stylist before they do anything to your hair. It is definitely a learning environment and there are dull and bright crayons in every box. So far I have saved money and ended up with a great cuts. The students obviously change all the time so my suggestion is to ask for someone good at what you need before you go. It makes it less of a gamble that way.
