This red raspberry vinegar is great on salads. I pair it with a grapefruit flavored olive oil from Sciabica's in Modesto CA. Yum!

We strolled through here while visiting friends in Salem NY. It is dangerous for food lovers because there are so many things to tempt. I had to resist the urge to go crazy and settled on some local maple syrup and a red raspberry vinegar. The syrup is long gone but I have been nursing that red raspberry vinegar along, mostly using it on salad. Wish they had mail order because I am getting low. I guess I'll see if my friends in Salem will get me some and send it to me.

I'm not really a picky person, so on a hot 90-degree day you certainly won't find me in a field…read morepicking my own blueberries. Enter Star Farm! We discovered them recently on our drive to dinner at the Cock 'n' Bull restaurant. The farm planted their blueberry bushes in 2013 and had their first harvest in 2018. We learned this while talking to the friendly wife of the owning family. They are set back in from Galway Rd, just east of the Galway traffic light. Look for the sign on their truly classic, white (fire?)truck at the edge of their driveway. They have a small retail stand from which you can arrange to pick your own blueberries or purchase pints and quarts of berries freshly picked that morning. They also sell pies from Smith's Orchard, cookies and doughnuts from someplace that I didn't get the name of, girl scout cookies, jewelry, maple syrup, and certainly several other items that I didn't take note of. Besides being a really nice place to stop by, the blueberries are delicious! Large, ripe, flavorful berries, no comparison to the ones coming from New Jersey or from far-off countries and currently available in any supermarket. Their pickers also do an excellent job of removing the stems from each berry. While I can't speak for the picking experience, they expect to be open through August. You may want to go and pick your own.

I used to visit here annually when I lived in NY. I have very fond memories of Indian Ladder Farms…read moreas a child and it was a very special treat to sample their warm apple cider and devour a bag of fresh cider donuts. Many years later they have so much more to offer - several varieties of fresh coffee, fresh warm pies, a huge selection of jarred items such as honey, pickles, olives, jams and jellies, a variety of craft beers and ciders made on site, Danishes, cookies, and other pastries for purchase, clothing and other merchandise, a large produce area with some of the most beautiful fruits and veggies available, a separate building dedicated to just apple varieties, and a large event hall at the back end of the property near their brewery. This place is pretty awesome. Something else to note is that when we arrived, they were setting up for Oktoberfest, so if you don't have any plans for Oktoberfest next year this would be an exceptional venue to share in the celebration. I have to say that it is a little pricy, much more expensive than I remember but we are living in different times now. We purchased one of the warm peach pies and it was exquisite. I even had a piece with my breakfast the next morning, I couldn't get enough, but it was about $25. Three donuts and two coffees cost us $17.55, which is a bit overkill but we wanted to enjoy in the moment. We also purchased a jar of peach jelly Togo and that was about $8. This is a great place to take a friend or date in the afternoon or for an event. There are several walking trails available and the property is gorgeous as you have a great view of the Catskill Mountains. There are several places where you can just sit around and chat for a while and they have their own pub and eatery under the main store. Additionally, there are some livestock chilling on the property and a small petting area where the kids can feed goats, chickens and any other creature wandering around. All-in-all, we had a great time while visiting and would definitely come back next time we are in NY.
