This locally-owned and operated nursery has been a fixture in the community for 40 years, and they pride themselves on the fact that over 90% of the plants they sell are grown right here at their greenhouses in Saratoga Springs, NY. I've been here many times over the years with my parents as they bought hanging baskets of flowers to display on their porch, and perennials to plant around their house. Now that my Dad has moved into a senior living facility, we still go to Sunnyside to find a plant or some decorative vegetation to set outside his front door. My sister and I have wandered through their 20 different greenhouses in search of something colorful to spruce up his place. On this most recent trip, Sunnyside was decorated for the Fall season with their gigantic pumpkin patch, "Monster" mums, Holiday decorations, and a train ride and hay rides for the whole family. The first thing I noticed as I pulled up to Sunnyside were the gigantic hay bales which were stacked and painted to resemble the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- very cool idea, and popular with the kids. From there it was a few steps to start walking through the pumpkin patch where families were in search of the perfect pumpkins to decorate for Halloween. Sunnyside provides little wagons for people to cart their selections up to the registers, and so I found a wagon and loaded it up with some interesting-looking gourds of all shapes sizes, and colors. I proudly marched my selections up to the counter, and was quite surprised to see that everything cost about $10. Much cheaper than I had expected. In the end I had a great time tromping around through their Fall display, and my Dad ended up with a colorful display which made him happy.

I am an avid gardener; gardening is my passion and what I do to maintain my sanity :-). Would have…read moregotten my Master Gardener certification if I had the time to put into the program and the community service they require ... but I have my own business, and I can't make the commitment. So I know a bit about plants, flowers, bushes, and landscaping as I have been doing it for over 30 years. When I moved up to the Saratoga Springs area several years ago, I purchased six crabapple and two dogwood trees from Hewitt's on Route 9 in Wilton. My ex-husband and I planted the crabapples along the driveway, and the dogwoods at the side of the house. We did everything you're supposed to do - big holes, compost in with the root ball, watered well - but for some odd reason the trees never made it (like the marriage, but that's another story). It depressed the heck out of me to see these 'sticks' with nary a leaf on them every time I drove down the 300' driveway. When I went to purchase my annuals at Hewitt's a couple weeks ago, I mentioned to one of the cashiers my disappointment in these trees. The cashier told me that Hewitt guarantees all their trees, to take some photos of the trees, and come back and speak with Chris, the manager. I had an early appointment in town this morning and decided to stop by Hewitt's before this popular place got hopping. Chris could not have been more helpful or accommodating. I didn't have the receipts for the trees because I am now divorced and my ex has those records. I showed him the photos of the trees (which may or may not have been necessary), and we picked out eight replacement trees at no charge to me. I tell you the truth, I almost cried. I've been staring at these ugly 'sticks in the ground' for several years, which is depressing. He loaded them in my Hyundai Tucson (who knew they would fit?) along with a gardenia tree, jasmine plant, and clematis that I purchased. I relay this rather winded story because we're always so quick to complain when things go wrong or we're disappointed with a product or service and people don't assume responsibility, Hewitt's is a local business (they have several locations) that guarantees their trees ... and they keep their word even a few years later! Because of Chris' exemplary customer service, Hewitt's will be getting ALL of my business in the future. They have a very extensive selection of healthy trees (including fruit trees, which might be my next purchase), bushes, vines, and perennial and annual plants, including the tropicals that I love (hibiscus bushes and trees, gardenias, jasmine, bananas, and more) at reasonable prices. Chris, you have made this customer and gardener very happy. Thank you!
