Now I can't say that I have had the pleasure of stopping in at their actual orchard to tour their complex, but yesterday while spending time at the Brattleboro Gallery Walk I taste tested a few of their ciders and spoke with one of their employees regarding the orchard. All I have to say is Wow! Ok, maybe I have more to say. The employee representing Champlain Orchards was polite, knowledgeable and a hell of a salesman during the Gallery Walk. We ended up trying a few different types of ciders, but the Macintosh and Maple sealed the deal for us. It was so good that we returned to buy a few four packs and bottles. In the end, if you don't like super sweet hard ciders then this is the cider for you. It was crisp and delicious but not overly sweet.

What a lovely birthday afternoon! Beautiful weather in the garden surrounded by flowers while trying flights of delicious cider. The food was super tasty! Try the soup and baguette or a savory tart. But, leave room for a turnover! The only thing nicer than the food was the gals who served us in the shop and the tasting room. Don't miss this hidden gem! read more

We came apple picking here in October, and had the best time. The views from the orchard were incredible and beautiful. The orchard was clean, well maintained, and well marked so it was easy to wander to find apples we were looking for. We loved the Ruby Mac's! read more

I stopped by for a tasting, however, when I got there, they were not offering any tastings that day. Unfortunately, I was unable to open and try any cans onsite and had to take them with me. The ones I tried were very good and would purchase more again if they were sold near me. Call ahead for tastings since there is no notification of them offering it or not. read more

I absolutely LOVE the hard ciders produced at this orchard. The Mac & Maple is my go-to cider over everything else; the maple comes through in the aftertaste and adds a sweetness that balances out the Macintosh apples used. We placed an order online and picked up midday on a Wednesday during June. Surprisingly busy time; a large group of teens and chaperones were there doing a you-pick of fruits and getting cider donuts. We shopped around while waiting for them to wrap up, and ended up going home with apple cider donuts, apple cider syrup, an ice cider, and a bunch of cheese curds. Everything we've tried has been delicious so far! Highly recommend, and I do believe they ship if you can't make it over to the orchard too. read more

So much fun picking apples and berries. We also did the cider tasting . It was a bit cold but it was an awesome experience. All the staff was super nice and helpful . This is the only reason why I came to Vermont (other than the foliage ) to pick apples .. very silly but just a great thing to do in fall . Can't do this in California for sure . read more

Such a welcoming staff. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with warm smells of fresh baking and a delightful staff! I had tastes of their plum and ginger spiced ciders, wow! Overall a great experience and highly recommend you check it out! read more

This is a great Orchard!! As owner of Shelburne Orchards I recommend this orchard highly! It's not only a beautiful location, they grow all kinds of wonder fruits and vegetables.. They make hard cider!! How awesome is that!! Great people working there, you will feel like you are in the heart of Vermont at it's best!! read more

Superb hard ciders and ice cider (cordial) produced right at the orchard. Amazing apple pies loaded with fruit (choice of double crust, oat topping, or sugar glaze). The BEST sweet cider around. Irresistible cinnamon cider donuts made right in their farm store. Devoted, committed, genuinely nice staff. And when you go in the fall to the pick-your-own hillside of the main orchard, it's so beautiful, looking over and through the apple-laden trees - west over Lake Champlain to the Adirondack Mountains, and east to Vermont's Green Mountains. And at that time of the year, they also have bluegrass musicians playing there on the weekends. This is one wonderful place! read more

History

Established in 1998.

Champlain Orchards began in 1998 when Bill Suhr, at 27 years old, purchased 60 acres in Shoreham, Vermont, motivated by a dream to live sustainably off the land. Despite lacking experience in apple growing and fruit farming, Bill’s passion for the environment and his entrepreneurial spirit drove the orchard's transformation. Over the years, the growth of Champlain Orchards has been substantial. Annually, the orchard harvests over 100,000 bushels of apples, largely due to the introduction of diverse and disease-resistant apple varieties. This bounty supports not just local markets but also reaches schools, hospitals, and stores across the region, underscoring the orchard’s impact on Vermont’s local food system. Today, Champlain Orchards is a testament to sustainable agricultural success, managing over 220 acres and offering more than 115 varieties of apples alongside a diverse range of fruits like plums, peaches, and berries.

Meet the Business Owner: Bill S.

Bill grew up in the Maryland suburbs and began developing a love for Vermont from a young age by spending summers with his grandparents in Greensboro. Once he completed high school, it was a natural choice to attend UVM where he studied Natural Resources and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Biology in 1994. Right out of school, he began a career as an environmental consultant, but as he gained professional experience, it became clear that his goal was to be self-employed and earn his living off the land. He would frequently spend weekends land-hunting and toyed with plans of managing a woodlot or becoming a furniture maker. Once it came to his attention that the Larrabee Point Orchard was for sale in Shoreham, it was an opportunity he could not overlook, and Champlain Orchards was born.
