One of the worst things about traveling as a woman alone (Eek! OMG! A woman alone!) is running into places like this. But, it was just down from my hotel, and when I checked it out online the menu seemed okay and the reviews weren't bad. And, at first, it wasn't. I got there at about 7:30. It took a while--maybe 5 minutes--for a server to notice me, but when she did she was helpful with some questions I had about the drink menu. She even got me a sample of a Tom gin that was very nice. Alas, I had arrived at the dreaded SHIFT CHANGE! (Eek! OMG! A woman alone at SHIFT CHANGE!!!) The initial server came over to tell me that she was closing out, and that another dude would be picking up the table. I hadn't gotten my drink by then, but I did see it sitting...and sitting...and sitting on the bar while two dudes came in and sat a couple tables away. Eventually, the bar tender brought me my drink, which seemed not to be the martini I ordered but a concoction on the menu with gin and St. Germaine that seemed to sweet for my taste so I hadn't ordered it. It was too sweet, but not awful. What was awful was that the little dude who was supposed to take my order flitted immediately over to the two dudes who had come in 15 minutes after me. He took their order, which involved going inside to get a bottle of wine, never once even so much as farting in my general directing. Then he went and chatted with the barkeep, who didn't bother to remind him that he had another table. After a full 20 minutes, the first server, who was ending her shift, came round on her way out to check on me. I told her I was leaving b/c no one would wait on me. Sadly, god bless her, she offered to take my order. But I'd had enough by then and walked out feeling sad not only for my own sad experience but for the poor server who has to put up with those douchebag dudes day after day. I can't say how the food is. I ended up at the bar at my hotel, where the wedge salad was just not bad. But the service was awesome. And here's where the tip for the Garage comes in: Good service tastes better than awesome food and bad service makes everything taste like crap no matter how hip you might think it is. read more

Went to the Garage for a Christmas party. Had it catered and the mezzanine reserved. It was loads of fun, and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The bartender was even the same one we had last year - *and* he remembered me. Go figure! The drinks were spot on (and I have a lot of strict, weird dietary requirements, such as no sodas, no juices except apple, no lemon, but lime is okay.... and on and on and on), creative, and delicious. The food was adventurous *enough* for me, but within the field of comfort for the majority of our party, who are more the meat-and-potatoes type. Bravo! read more

I finally found where all of the sexy and lazy people hang out in Seattle: The Garage. Seriously, this place is filled with those people in expensive artistic sweatshirts and sparkley make-up who love drinking and slacker sports. I showed up in a rat's nest sweatshirt and glasses. But I was still loved. I was served a delicious falafal sandwich and a slew of shots while we scoped other players among the amazing rows of pool tables. The beer was flowin' (they have great food and drink specials every night). The music was blowin'. The place was pretty packed. I had a good time sauntering between the pool tables making friends and interrupting other people's bowling games (it gets kind of dark in the bowling area). The bad part is, you have to wait FOREVER to get a lane. The good part is, everyone is definitely in the mood to party and they really don't mind if you come over (even if you're not wearing bowling shoes). All in all, I enjoyed the lazy, sexy crowd at The Garage. Two thumbs up for great service and me racking up a huge bar tab. The lights will be on for one more night at The Garage! read more

$2.50 drafts $10/hr bowling for happy hour. We didn't have any food here, but we did enjoy drinks a-plenty and some we tried to knock some pins over (mostly unsuccessfully). This is a great place to have a adult birthday party or a stop on a bachelor/bachelorette night out. It's probably the hippest bowling alley you will ever go to. How about those ceilings? The reason for the 5 stars is the fact the waitress would come around around every 10 min or so to make sure we were ok and our glasses were full. The Garage plays good music. My company also took us here for our quarterly "fun event" and it worked great. We were there in the early afternoon so there were plenty of tables open and lots of room to roam. The place fills up on the weekends so if you're going with a big crowd I would show up a bit early. The bowling's pricey. But they have shuffleboard and that rules. ***UPDATE*** Just went to a WWU Alumni event here where they'd rented out the entire bottom portion for bowling. Now: For a staff that knows they're not getting tipped great (free drink tickets!), they were incredibly accommodating and friendly. I thought this was a fabulous place to have a networking even because it was spacious enough for 50+ people to roam but not so vacuous that it felt lame. I often come here with groups since it's an easy place to get large amounts of people in without reserving or putting a deposit down. I've been here during happy hour and regular hours. The bowling and pool tables are cool. As far as the drinks, during happy hour, you can get $2.50 draft beers and $3.00 well drinks. Love it! I also love their some of their "tini" drinks. The food...is nothing special and quite frankly, not really worth eating unless you've consumed large quantities of alcohol. The chorizo pizza has a thin crust that goes beyond thin. It's a cracker. My friend literally watched me eat it for an hour and a half. Even though I didn't say anything, he knew I didn't like it and repeatedly asked if he could buy me something else to eat. Apparently, I reminded him of one of his kids who refused to eat their dinner. The chicken strips are okay. The fries are shoestring, which I enjoy. The steak fold is good. The meat has a nice flavor but they haven't quite figured out just the right amount of spice. Some bites will have a perfect balance and some will not. The tomatoes in it are cut way too think, pretty much tomato steaks. My friends enjoy burgers there but since I tend to be quite picky about burgers, I haven't tried one. Staff is often friendly but there is often confusion about which groups are taking up which tables. Maybe it's because I grew up playing pool and bowling on military bases in alleys that were well lit, clean, and free of cigarette smoke (if sparsely decorated) but I am thoroughly unimpressed by The Garage. I like pool, and I like bowling, but not for these prices. The food is good, but even if there are only one or two bowlers around and you get a table, it's not really an atmosphere that lends itself to "good food" so the quality of the grub is somewhat wasted. On a weekend night, it's impossible to keep your drink full, and unless you come early or are super relentless about getting a spot in line, you can't get a table or a lane anyway. So, what are you left with? A packed bar that gets about 8,000 times louder in here than in a normal bar. So not my scene. read more

My friends and I lost a very dear friend recently who loved pool. The garage was a place he would go often and stomp my boyfriend at billiards. We played pool In his honor this past Sunday. The garage knew and loved him too. They graciously hooked us up with some tables to play on and our waitress patiently served the 50 or so people that showed up. I showed upon a Friday night around 8 for a friends surprise 30th birthday party. When we showed up, it wasn't packed (which I expected given the time). If you've never been here before (it was my first time), expect to walk around a bit dazed and confused if you don't know exactly where you're meeting someone or where you're going. There's a pool area (up and downstairs), a few different bars, bowling alleys (up and downstairs too) ... This place had a lot to offer! The food menu selections were okay. I had Alainn burger and fries, neither of which were anything to rave about. The fries were pretty soggy actually. Not soggy like they were full of grease, but soggy as if they were cooked, then covered immediately so any heat they let off was turned into condensation. A girlfriend of mine ordered the nacho fries and while she said they were "okay" she wasn't too stoked on them either. My beer on tap was $8, a little pricey compared to other places. The server who walked around our area wasn't friendly nor helpful - in fact she was quite rude when she thought people couldn't hear her. ***Newsflash! Just because you're behind the bar and I'm on the other side waiting to order a drink and engaged in a conversation, it doesn't mean I CANT hear you. Maybe next time, when servers want to complain about customers (which I believe they have every right to, I totally understand that they have a job that isn't always easy and often times they can be treated poorly as well), but if you want to complain about someone, don't do it when they're in hearing distance. 2.5 Stars Went on a Monday night to meet up with some old friends. The place consists of a pool hall, a couple of bars and a bowling area (maybe it was just me, but the bowling lanes seemed shorter than regulation, although my buddy says they are normal length). There is an upstairs area, but it was roped off so I can't comment on it. However, I think another bowling alley is up there. I ordered a Goose from the bowling alley waitress, she asked if I wanted a "single or a double?" I took the single which was smart cuz I later found out that a "double" is literally a "double", meaning twice the price of a single. Maybe that's typical, but I thought a double might be slightly cheaper than two singles. My "single" was a little weak (especially for $8 plus tip) so it was H20 for the rest of the night. I didn't bowl, but my friends did and they seemed to be having fun. I stuck my head in the pool hall (for Yelp's sake), it seemed normal and not too packed. I also checked out the pool hall bar (again with Yelp in mind), it looked normal but no one was in there. This is a place to come hang and play pool or bowl with friends. No action was happening at either bar (at least on Monday), plus the drinks are nothing special, so I wouldn't come here just to mingle and have a drink. read more

I really love Garage. Despite its reputation of being too-hip-for-its-own-good, Garage is actually a really laid back place to grab a beer and chuck a heavy ball at some funny shaped wooden pins. They also have a bunch of pool tables, service is quick and friendly, and their happy hour prices are amazing--$2.50 for draft beers is just about as good as you're going to get in the city. Garage can get a little crowded at times, but it's a rare instance when you can't get a lane if you're willing to hang out and play some pool for an hour or so. If you haven't been...go. read more

Great happy hour deals! $10/hr per lane for up to 8 people, so grab your friends for an afternoon/late night of casual bowling! Do note that the lanes on the sides are slightly tilted, so this really isn't the place to go for competitive bowling. In addition to good bowling rates, happy hour drinks are also very cheap: $2.50 pints, $3.00 well drinks. The only downside of my visit here was the food. I can't vouch for most of the items on their happy hour menu, but I was slightly disappointed in the personal pizza I ordered to share with 2 other friends. Yes, I understand that it was a fresh hand-tossed Hawaiian pizza with an exotic name, but $11 should've filled me up at least a little. I gobbled up my share of the pizza, and while it was yummy, my stomach was still on empty =( Overall, nice place to hang out. The Garage definitely wins the award for coolest restaurant/bar concept in Seattle. Where else can you go in Seattle for a bite to eat, cheap happy hour drinks while simultaneously playing pool and/or bowling? I've gone to Garage on several occasions and have always had a fabulous time. The sheer size of this place (it takes up nearly an entire city block) should give you an idea of the amount of fun this place has inside of it. The decor is cool and hip but not pretentious, there's plenty of staff working at a given time to offer speedy, friendly service and there's multiple bars throughout the Garage giving you plenty of opportunity to have your thirst quenched. If you keep your eyes peeled, Garage often offers a Groupon, Living Social and/or Amazon Local deal that makes going to this fun spot even sweeter. Plus, they're generous enough to allow you to use your voucher during happy hour where the deals are insane. $3 wells and draft beers, $5 pool tables and $10 lanes and half off pizzas during late night happy hour! They even have a pretty decent menu with upscale pub food. Try the veggie empanadas, any one of their burgers (they're huge!) or the chicken strips to soak up those drinks. read more

I've been here a few times, and it is always worth the exorbitant price tag. I'm not really an expert in the sport of bowling, or pool for that matter. But I do like to have fun, which is not at all difficult to do at the Garage. Their happy hour is superb, and they always have really interesting and tasty (strong) cocktails. Two of my favorites was their Long Island Ice Tea and a drink whose name escapes me, but it was Rum and Ginger Ale. The wait for a pool table or a bowling lane can be 2+ hours on the weekend. But on a week night, you're looking at a 0-minute wait and great happy hour pricing. $5.00 an hour for a lane or table? Hell to the yes. Their food is good, standard bar food, and you get decent service surprisingly. More than once we've had our fries comped for us because of the "long wait" for them, but we're all too busy bowling to even notice. Once the fries arrive anyway, they are happily demolished. This is dedicated to K-Fed at my work. (You're welcome Kevin). So about a year ago I went through a huge bowling phase. Not to say that my game improved at all. In fact I think it got worse the more I played. Anyway, my apologies for getting sidetracked... back to what's important. The Garage. Out of all the places I went bowling this is BY FAR my favorite place to go. I feel this way for a number of reasons: 1) It is clean (well as clean as a bowling alley can be) and not old and gross smelling like most bowling alleys. 2) It is also a pool hall, which I happen to love more than bowling and I would usually schmooze my way into making everyone play pool with me when I was sick of bowling. (I always succeeded) :) 3) They have an excellent happy hour - good food and cheap (and effective) drinks. 4) The crowd is young and fun - everyone is there to have a good time and sometimes you can even meet cool new people. Let's be honest here and lay all the cards on the table: I don't think you can expect much more from a bowling alley. All in all I have to say that if you're going to go - do it right. There isn't any other place to bowl like the Garage. Although there used to be that place just north of ballard that had karaoke too - that would be hard to compete with. Horrible service! We went here with a group of about 7 girls to celebrate a birthday and the girl at the front counter was so rude and it was pretty obvious that she was unhappy in her life. We went to play pool since it was pretty busy and that was fine until the guy at the pool counter said he "didn't like the vibe" that I was giving him and tried to start a fight. It was very ghetto! Just went here last night for the first time. Didn't play pool, but there seemed to be tables open on a Friday night, so that's a plus. Very laid-back atmosphere--it's a pool hall, after all. Plastic tables outside and whatnot. But perfectly good for our purposes. Our server was great, attentive and fast, no-nonsense but cool, and she split up the checks without even asking which was very nice. I had a veggie quesadilla and a couple drinks, and everything was great. Everyone in my party was very happy with their food. Reasonably priced, too. The quesadilla was $8 and I couldn't even finish, it was a lot of food. The fries were yummy. I'll definitely come back, hopefully play pool next time even though I'm terrible. Tall, dark, and handsome..and I'm not talking about the men at this place. Although, there were some good looking folks at the Garage, both ladies and gents. Anyway, the tall brightly-lit sign that tells Capitol Hill patrons where THEE place to bowl is nice. The dark atmosphere when walking in is romantic if you're on that casual first date, which is great except when you're bowling and you accidentally drop the bowling ball backwards when swinging down the lane. A friend did this and we spent some time locating that heavy lost ball. And handsome is just applied to the decor and what nots of this laidback place. I enjoyed happy hour with friends and whether you are looking to shoot some pool, throw some balls, or drink it up and watch others play drunk, you'll find something here to tickle your fancy. I held a birthday party, his 30th, for my little brother at this venue and it was a success in my eyes:) The accommodation they recommended for the party size and needs turned out exellent. We had the back billiards section, reserved which included plenty of seats and tables. We also rented out the back 2 tables as well. This provided a Great space for us to enjoy our time!!! Our waitress was a doll, making sure we were good the whole evening. Prices for drinks and food were very affordable and had a good variety. Being the holiday weekend the crowd was busy but not too much and the music never fails. A great mix of a little bit of it all:) Garage is a smart choice for future get togethers!!! read more

As another reviewer mentioned, this is the bowling alley for an urbanite, city dweller to go to. They don't have nachos but they have a lot of bar food that's way worse and I was surprised they didn't have them. It's kinda hard to screw up nachos and that would've made more sense that this. I ordered a refresher and it tasted like someone squirted lemon juice in a crappy vodka. I'm all about the sour but the drink is so sour I can barely swallow it. With four players, $25/hour for a bowling lane is reasonable when you compare to other alleys where they charge per player per game. The waitresses came by regularly and quickly, even though it was a busy Saturday night. All the food and drinks were OK to good and at the prices I expect for the area. The lanes were really dark, so bowling was a bit tougher than other places, but we were there to have fun, not to have serious competition. The few pool tables I saw (we never went downstairs) were in surprisingly good condition considering the busyness of the parlor. I didn't get a good look at the house cues or the balls to know if they were high-quality or in good repair. It's pretty loud inside, so if you're looking for a quiet space to play your games, this isn't it. read more

Chill Place I wouldn't call this place a gem, but definitely a more low key, low vibe, kind of place to hang out without the buzz of a "club". If busy, such as weekends and such, you can definitely grab a buzzer and wait for a pool table while you bowl right down the hall. Drink service at the bowling area is somewhat lacking. It took us forever to find a server to take our drink order even if we had the "drink service light" on. At pool area, this was way faster. We got service right away. The fries were not great, but definitely addicting when you want to munch on something. Overall the prices were not too bad and the place was relatively clean. I've been going to this place since it opened more than 10 years ago. It's as cool now (2009) as it was back then. There's a bowling alley now, which is cool, and of course tons of pool tables. But if you're not into sports, the red-walled bar is a good place to lounge, and the food here is awesome. Oh, this place gets an extra star for the old shuffleboard table in the bar. Chances are, there will be some people playing on it when you get there. Wait. But not too long. If it's still occupied, challenge them to an arm wrestling match to win the table. Best place to bowl on Capitol Hill. Wait... its the ONLY place to go bowling on Capitol Hill. But nevermind that, it's actually a pretty decent spot. Definitely go during their Late Night Happy Hour (10pm to close, Sun-Thurs), you get the best deal on lanes and pool tables, $5 and hour... no joke. The lanes fill up pretty fast on Sunday nights, so we usually end up playing pool if the bowling wait is too long. Their food an drinks are ok, but think the waitress in the pool section is nicer and faster than the one at the lanes.
