I spent about $1,500 on repairs this garage recommended to fix an issue with my Subaru, and the problem was never fixed. I was told that two specific repairs were the cause, approved the work, and neither of them solved anything. After that, they wanted me to pay an additional $700 for an electronic diagnostic, even though the original diagnostics were what led to the $1,500 worth of unnecessary repairs in the first place. I feel like I paid a lot of money for guesswork instead of proper diagnosis. No accountability, no real solution, just more money requested. I wouldn't trust this mechanic. Even after sending me home with loose hoses and potentially about to blow my motor they still try to blame it on the customers and not take responsibility for their lack of service and attention to detail. If I were to check an engine correctly fully and thoroughly, they would've most definitely seen the loose hoses. If they drive it or actually tried to see what was wrong they would've felt it or even heard it. Nothing was done and my car now has a rod knock. I understand that rod knock is common but I didn't have that noise before I went to them. And shortly after my car does this. Do better for your customers read more

Dishonest mechanic - stay away. A few months ago I brought my subaru in for service (clearing a TSC light), and they gave me a $12k quote including head gaskets to fix everything they claimed was faulty. Most of the items were simply unnecessary at the time (recommended replacement due to surface rust), but recommending the head gasket replacement (over $5k) was outright malicious as they hadn't done the proper diagnosis for that recommendation (leakdown test), and the engine was completely rebuilt within 15k miles, so the recommended head gasket replacement was wholly unnecessary. Stay away. Don't let them take advantage of you. read more

Head gaskets were going out on my 06 Outback 2.5i with 190k miles. Called around to some Subaru Specialty shops, but this one really caught my eye. I'm glad I went with them as they were extremely communicative and let me know everything that was going on with the car. I do not normally write reviews. Since Garage One requested to leave a review after completing the service, here is my feedback: This was my first experience in taking my wife's 2012 Subaru Outback to an independent Subaru repair shop for A/C repair & leaking power steering fluid. The car has always been serviced or repaired by a Subaru dealership. After reading up on all the reviews from Nextdoor (social networking for neighborhoods) and Yelp. I thought I would give Garage One a try, so I can also support my local small businesses and at the same time, hope to save a little money. Garage One fell short in quality work, and the cost of repair is not much different from the dealership. 1. The rubber hose that is connected to the power steering fluid reservoir was not installed properly which caused the power steering fluid to leak and left an oil stain on my driveway (see photos). I send them a message right after I got home from their shop, and they do not even bother responding back. This seems to me like they don't value their customers and get things corrected. So, I went ahead and fixed the issue myself as my wife needs to use the car for work. 2. After the O-rings from the power steering pump were replaced, the technician/mechanic did not even bother to clean or remove the excess power fluid spillage on top of the engine block. And traces of power steering oil fluid were also left behind on top of the engine air filter box and not even bothered to wipe down. 3. The engine cover was not installed properly. It was loose and not attached to the fasteners that hold or secure the cover. 4. The new non-Genuine Subaru A/C compressor seems to cost more than the Genuine Subaru part. My advice to all potential new customers. You should think twice before bringing your car to Garage One. After paying almost $1.9k for all the repair work, there might be much better independent repair shops within the Bay Area that value their customers and do quality repair work. And my advice to the owner of Garage One. Hire a competent tech/mechanic who has attention to detail and does a quality job. read more

I had an issue with my door handle on my 2003 Subaru WRX Wagon. I reached out via their site and received a response fairly quickly. I set up a day to meet and have them check out my car. He quoted me a great price. All that was needed was a down payment for parts. I offered to pay for labor up front too just to secure my business here. About a week later, the part came in and I was able to drop my car off. They also use a portal to update you on things they have found that need attention with your car. Its very detailed and intuitive. I picked my car up later that day and it looked perfect! I've taken my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek to Garage One for an Intermediate Service (Comprehensive Inspection) and Minor Service, and I've had an excellent and smooth experience with the booking process, staff, and service both times. As part of the Intermediate Service, I had them look into a whirring noise that I thought was coming from the transmission, and once they confirmed it was from the transmission, I appreciated that they directed me to the Stevens Creek Subaru dealership to fix that issue, since the car was still under warranty. My car lost boost and I was completely concerned my turbo went out. I use another shop for most vehicle issues. But, I thought a Subaru specific turbo issue should be brought to the Subaru specialists. I was not disappointed. Garage One charged me a reasonable rate to diagnose the issue. Thankfully, it was a simple fix as my intercooler was not properly seated. They reinstalled it correctly which was included in the diagnostic rate. Everyone I came into contact with was very kind and I received my car the same day as good as new. All my fluids were topped off and I was back on the road with the extra horsepower I was lacking. If you have a Subi, give this place a shot. They know their stuff and they don't seem like the type of folks to up-charge for nonsense you don't need. Prices are a bit higher than average but they check your entire car! they absolutely know what they are doing. Customer service is amazing! They always make a huge difference compare to others. My 2015 Subaru Outback never had engine failure of any kind until I took it to Garage One back in October 2022. After its 98K maintenance and driving it less than 1K miles the engine started misfiring. I called asking if they can see what's going on. A normal response would have been to agree with a "yes, bring it over" since engine failure of this nature right after major service including spark plugs is odd. Instead, their response was that it will cost ~$300 to diagnose the problem. My confidence on them dropped and found instead an excellent shop with Japanese car proficiency in Sunnyvale. My new repair shop diagnosed a bad coil and they also found that one spark plug was not screwed tightly enough. Replacing the coil cost me $696, a totally unnecessary expense due to a loose spark plug. However, my Outback with 1 new coil and 3 original ones is running as good as it was before I took it to Garage One, 5K+ miles after. Garage One changed the oil ($110 - synthetic), spark plugs ($512), Drive Belt ($132), Brake Fluid ($217) and Front + Rear Differential Fluid ($162), a total of $1,168 plus tax and fees ($9). Also itemized is the insertion of "Garage One License Plate Frame" as a free item. This frame is no longer in my license plate. read more

Highly recommend going to garage one. My clutch went out in my WRX and I was unable to drive at all. I had my car towed there and dropped off. Within a day, I got a call with an update regarding everything that was found, as well as additional work. I was really surprised with how fast the communication was and all the information provided. I brought my '05 Subaru Legacy in for extensive work as it approached the 140k mark. This was my first car, and there was some maintenance I had been putting off for years. I told them I wanted to get the old car in ship-shape. It wasn't an easy decision because I knew it would be expensive, and I didn't know much about how the car works and why the specific maintenance items were needed. They were patient and helpful with all my questions as I learned about it. The work was done over a period of months. I would drop it off, they did some work, and then I got the car back and drove it for a while, until it was time to tackle the next thing. The work was always done efficiently and they were always on top of communicating. When I finally drove it home, it felt so smooth and refreshed and new. I'm not sure it makes much sense to invest that much in an old car, but it is a great feeling to drive it now, and that means a lot to me! I also took my '13 STI to them, and they got the power steering working again after I destroyed it at the track multiple times. read more

Had a great experience with the folks at Garage One Subaru Workshop. I brought my WRX in to get a suspension diagnostic. Garage One not only diagnosed what needed to be repaired on my suspension, but gave courtesy recommendations on items that needed repairing. They provided estimates for parts and labor listed in the diagnostic so there weren't any hidden or unknown costs. They leave it up to the owner's discretion on which repairs, if any, they would like to proceed on. At no point during my interaction did I feel pressured to do anything. Their communication etiquette and estimates were clear and easy to follow, and all my questions were answered. I brought my vehicle back in after the diagnostic to get all of the recommended suspension needs fixed, and the actual cost ended up being slightly less than their estimate. My WRX rides smoothly now and previous "clunks" and weird noises are gone. A great find in South Bay for Subaru owners. Let's see, where to start. First I never had my car serviced there so as to the quality of work? I can't say anything, however the issue is that I have tried to reach these people on 5 different occasions to which I was only successful once. I asked for a simple quote on the replacing the heater core on my Imprezza. First NO one ever answers the phone (very disappointing) they never responded to my email (also disappointing) the 1 time they did answer the phone the guy asked for all my info as it was the only way their system could generate a quote was for them to enter my info (now they'll probably sell it off to some Chinese commies) The level of customer service should be rated at a negative number, you don't have a VM that says to leave your info and someone will call you back and no EVER calls you back, and if you actually do talk with someone and they tell you they will send you a quote but they NEVER send the quote and then you try to call/email them and NO ONE responds, it's likely your business won't survive long or maybe there's a group of people that provide 90% of their biz. Either way They def will not earn any points from me nor would I take my car there based on what I've experienced. I wish I could give a lower score but its not possible so here ya go Garage one. Twice Garage One suggested that I had oil leakage, the first related to the freeze plugs and the estimate included dropping the engine to the tune of $1,700. I did nothing and the next time it was serviced, I was told the head gaskets (estimate $745) were leaking after they replaced spark plugs. They also said that the rear lateral control arms needed replacing (estimate $680) This time I had another shop check the leak and was told that my engine was "as clean as any engine they had ever seen" and that there was nothing wrong with the lateral control arms There were other instances of attempts by Garage One to generate extra work after routine service visits. I would not recommend this place. I had my 2011 Suburu Outback serviced, and a couple hours into the process I get a request for $4000 of various repairs including rear arm control brushings, sway bar brushing, valve cover leaking etc. I then went immediately to another repair shop and had them do an inspection. They did not find any problems. They also mentioned that the previous service vendor did not tighten the oil gasket (or replace with filter) which could facilitate leakage. I just went in for a tire rotation and oil change but they noticed some other things that needed to be done. I love how they take pictures of everything and explain why it needs to be replaced. I've been to Garage One quite a few times since I've gotten my new sti. The only reason I go is to have regular oil changes and maintenance done to the vehicle. Anything like performance upgrades I'll do myself. When I have worked on my car I've noticed small details like panels not being clipped back or filters not put in all the way. The quality of their work is questionable. What this says to me is that they don't work on our cars as if it were their own. They will also even recommend a service that does not require attention. They said that the power steering fluid needed to be changed. The recommended interval is at 60k - 90k miles. Why would I need to change it at 12k? This says to me that they'll try and milk every cent they can get away with. My car is practically brand new, I'm taking my car else where. read more

This place is a complete rip off. They were going to charge me 1500 for something the Subaru Dealership did for free. They also over charged me for labor and lied about an issue claiming I had an "oil leak." They sent pictures to prove it but then said "sorry, you can't really tell in the pictures." Not sure I'm going back. I've been happy so far, but today I dropped the car off for an oil change. They did it, and then I got the note saying my oil pan gasket was leaking pretty bad, and I should have it fixed. Isn't that why I dropped the car off? It's an oil pan gasket, it's not regrinding the crank! Now, they want me to bring the car back in two weeks from now so they can replace the oil pan gasket, save the oil, and dump it back into the car... Again...it's an oil pan gasket. With a car on a hoist, maybe 20 minutes AT MOST to replace...nope,. bring the car back in 2 weeks and we will fix it then..after it leaks on my driveway and everywhere else. Very pleased with my experience. I used Garage One after getting fed up with several negative experiences at the local Subaru dealer. Their shop rate is about what I expected and the service was top notch. I'm pleased that when I asked them to inspect my vehicle along with a regular service that they noticed a few severe issues that the dealer failed to notice or inform me about. I felt confident that their diagnoses was correct and that I wasn't getting unnecessary work done as they shared pictures of the worn components and I wasn't asked to just "take their word for it" Their scheduling and online work order / approval tracking system is the best i've seen. I was searching around my area for a reliable Subaru servicing shop to install a tow hitch for my 2020 outback. I purchased the OEM part from Subaru directly to save on the potential upcharge. I initially went to a Subaru dealer, Fremont and was let down by the customer experience over the phone and by the price gouge. They wanted to charge me 1000 to install the hitch. I have worked on cars before and I've seen various videos of the installation process and the high price tag doesn't justify it one bit! Just goes to show you how untrustworthy dealers are. Anyways we all know how that goes... I was lucky to have found Garage One, they were quick to respond with a quote and were true to it during ring up after installation. In fact they charged a little below the estimate! I really felt like they did an amazing job! I'm now sporting my Kuat bike rack on the hitch and it feels extremely stable! I had such a great experience here. My 2010 Forester needed a new power steering/AC belt, and it seemed like the right time to change the timing belt and water pump, too. Their quote was reasonable, and didn't include anything extra. After checking the car they found some work that needed to be done, but I fully trust the assessment, and added on the extras. Makes dealing with a Subaru dealership service department feel like using a public restroom in a subway. ...and my experiences with Subaru dealers device departments has been pretty decent. But Garage One goes above and beyond. I've brought my Legacy to them twice and both times have been impressed with the service, rates, quality of work, and turnaround. The only reasons they don't get five stars is the communication is sometimes slow (I like to know what's going on with my car at all times), and the waiting area isn't much beyond a few chairs in a room. read more

Long Story short, Decent techs, terrible service (management) Looked over their reviews and decided on giving them a shot, gave them a call they told me they couldn't see my 2016 sti until Monday. But, I could come in that day for a "Free inspection" I arrive head into the store for the "Free Inspection" was greeted by Angela Ceja. She immediately asks for all my information, and puts in a invoice for the "Free inspection". I head outside to wait in my car for the tech to come up to me. He was amazing, cheerful and happy. Comes over hooks the obd 2 into my car and runs the codes. 3 codes pop up all related to running a little rich. When the tech goes to look at the codes more indepth the apparent owner of the store comes out. mid 40's blonde lady. She walks up extremely fast and proceeds to lean on my car and basically yell at the tech for doing a too indepth "Free inspection". She never introduced herself or explained what was going on. She yells at the techs to stop and leave, then ushered me into the office where she proceeded to book me for a "real inspection". I wasn't even able to talk to the techs about the code or what seems to be the problem/ what their advice was. The tech looked like a child cowering from an abusive father when the "owner" yelled at him. She had a massive attitude as well, very short attitude. I continue to book the inspection for my car for Monday morning. During the weekend I took the car to my friend with an obd 2 who accidently wiped the codes after running them. (He cleared them before I had the chance to tell him not to.) My mistake. I didn't realize the car completely wiped them instead of storing them. This is why I went back monday for the inspection. I arrive Monday morning 7:30 exactly. I talk to Angela Ceja at the front office again, she tells me she needs all my information phone name address. I told her I would not like to provide an address (Personal reasons no criminal reasons). She told me that by law I had to provide her with my address. Also I could not pick up the car without providing this information. I tell her I am not forced by law to provide any information to her. She tells me that are you sure you want to go along with this process. That I am being rude and I don't have to use this shop? By that point I had called her Ma'am through the entire encounter. After I tell her I understand the law and I am not required to provide any information to her. She continues to fill out my application. I see that on the invoice she sent me to approve there is a test ride. I asked her if they do do a test ride if she could provide me with the car's logs to make sure the shop didn't joy ride. (I've had it happen before). She looks at me annoyed and says that I should just "trust them". The reason I continued at this point was due to me needing to ensure the car was ok before I went on a trip. (not with this car) I come back to pick up the car, and I am being billed for $87.50(Full diagnosis is 175$). I wasn't allowed to talk to the techs about my half diagnosis.(Half diagnosis due to not being able to do a full diagnosis due to the codes being erased). Instead of calling me and asking me if they should proceed with the inspection. They do a half inspection and bill me for it. I go into the office and ask her about the price (how they arrived there) She told me its 175 hourly and so 175/2 is 87.5 and insinuated that I couldn't understand 175/2 because I was asking about the price. Mind you on the invoice there is a just a price no breakdown. All in all extremely extremely rude management. The only reason I paid is because I knew I already agreed to a mechanics lean by signing the invoice. I still have no clue what's the issue with my car because I couldn't talk to anyone but a receptionist who didn't understand what logs were. DO NOT GO HERE. MANY MANY OTHER PLACES IN THE BAY WHO SPECIALIZE IN SUBARU WRX/STI & DON'T TREAT YOU LIKE TRASH! PS I created a Yelp account just for this post. This is how badly I was treated. read more

I took my 2018 Forester XT here for a scheduled maintenance and was impressed with the friendly staff, their professional manner and subsequent follow ups to make sure I was happy with the service. The hand written follow up post card really made G1 stand apart from any other car shop I've ever visited. The office was super clean and the garage area looked very tidy too. Big points in my book!
