One of my family's favorite ice cream places is Gannon's! Growing up I lived across the street from them and we would get them all the time during summer. Now during the summer months I usually try to buy quarts of my favorite hard ice cream to have on hand instead of store bought stuff. Consistency of the products are on point. Outstanding. It is really worth all the hype and all the positive reviews are accurate. There was a decent sized line at 8PM, with a lot of people in parking lot enjoying their icecream. The girls working the counter were friendly and ensured the line moved fast, so don't be discouraged if you see a bit of a line. It will move and any wait is worth it for this icecream. I tried their low fat vanilla soft serve, which is actually their frozen yoghurt. It was awesome and honestly, I don't think I can say it tasted like a frozen yoghurt. It was great. I also tried the Milky Way flavor, which was awesome. Rich in flavor, creamy, and it had that fresh taste. Like really fresh. The same goes for the peanut butter flavor my husband had. Again, rich, creamy, fresh. I can't knock any of these flavors. Gannons has a lot of flavors in rotation, which is great because they make great ice cream, but they aren't all in rotation at the same time. I'd suggest if you haven't gone to look ahead at their menu, get an idea of what you want, but also look to have some back-up flavors that are regular staples on their menu (they tell you on their website), this way you won't be disappointed. Easily the best place to get ice cream in Syracuse. The hard ice cream is homemade and every flavor I've had has been delicious. My favorites are caramel cashew, peanut butter perfection, and classic strawberry. Always two scoops in a waffle cone. About 6 dollars for 2 scoops in a waffle cone- a fair price. The malted milkshakes are also great if you're into that. The lines can get long during busy times but they move quick. No indoor seating at the Macdonald Rd location but there's rocks outside to sit on. Great spot to take a date after dinner. Try it out! read more

We drive by McDonald Road a few times a day. If it's an ice cream day, we scope out the line rubberneck style to see if the line isn't 20+ minutes long. Coffee, peanut butter and Oreos are the ice cream trifecta, and they always have hard ice cream flavors that heavily support this habit. I recently discovered that peanut butter and bananas carries over into ice cream, so I've been banana splitting everything lately. Amazing ice cream!!! We stopped here after having a craving for ice cream and wanting something as close as possible to us. Gannon's was the first place that came up, so we decided to give it a try. I can't believe I've never heard about this place before. It's located in a small plaza with other businesses in a no-thrills type of building. The layout of the building made it really easy to abide by Covid protocols while getting your ice cream which is always another plus. You can expect a wait due to the high demand of their delicious ice cream! I got the snickers sundae. I'm not sure if you can even call it a sundae because of how massive it was- it was served on a plate dish! I appreciated the creativity and sizable portions as I am an ice cream lover. On recent unseasonably warm September evening we made our way for an "ice cream dinner" visit. The toddler was happy with his chocolate soft serve (although most of it didn't make it into his mouth), I ordered a dish of pumpkin Oreo and spouse stuck with his usual hard chocolate ice cream in a chocolate dipped waffle cone. The pumpkin Oreo was delicious. I thought it might be overly complex from a flavor standpoint but I was wrong, balanced flavors all the way...I'm ready for fall, bring on the pumpkin. The staff are always nice, usually college or high school students. This location doesn't offer any tables or seating, although there are several large rocks that you can sit on or consume in your car like many. The line was long and the wait was longer, it looked like they were short staffed for the crowd. One recommendation: some of the hard ice cream flavor selection names don't readily describe the ice cream. It would be nice if they had written descriptions because many patrons ask the staff what's in such and such flavor before ordering, myself included. This likely stalls the line. I've officially been to 3 Gannon's locations. I like that they serve everyone who is line even if it is past their closing hours. During the summers, there is a long line here. I tried the lime sherbet and pistachio almond hard ice cream. I thought the lime was packed with flavor and zest. They said the ice cream wasn't firm/hard enough yet so they put it in a cup for us with a cone on top. The pistachio almond was alright. The pistachio flavor tasted more like the instant pudding type (artificially flavored). Outside of hard ice cream, they have sundaes, flurries, soft ice cream, and frozen yogurt. The workers were very friendly. There's plenty of parking. I wish their specialty ice cream flavors had descriptions next to them (Charlie Brown, Seattle Sludge, etc). FYI, the Charlie Brown is chocolate with peanut butter and the Seattle Sludge is coffee with chocolate (?). People say it is the best ice cream in the world, but I do not agree. Ugh) Crazy coffee is awesome which was coffee ice cream with soft caramel in it (usually hard in other ice creams because it's so cold), and walnuts. My boyfriend is a fan of the peanut butter ice cream (not sure what it's called), but I am not. You have to really like peanut butter for this one. You can't go wrong with the Oreo/oreo cheesecake either (they taste the same to me) Have recently had the Oreo earthquake sundae which is around 9.00. Not really worth it if you ask me. It was vanilla soft serve, crushed Oreos, fudge, whipped cream, nuts, and marshmallow (we skipped the marshmallow). It's really good, but just not worth the price. A transcript of a conversation between myself and my father on the night of June 17th. My younger sister sat in the back seat of the car, looking generally ashamed to be related to me. I tried very hard not to strangle the life out of the steering wheel in my agitation. I was full of rage, disappointment, bafflement, and also pizza. All I wanted was a scoop of Charlie Brown. I was visiting Syracuse in the summer for the first time in two years, and it was a personal goal of mine to get to Gannon's every day. Due to various miscalculations and ulterior motives, I only managed to make two visits, and it wasn't nearly enough. Gannon's does something incredible with their ice cream: they somehow manage to get creative while remaining traditional and simple - not going highfalutin or presenting golfball-sized scoops for obscene prices. The texture is perfect; the weight of the ice cream just feels so right on the cone, just looks so right there with its cold little ruffle peeking out around the neck. Even a Gannon's veteran would have trouble checking every flavor off their list: the variety is broad and the quality high, tearing you between trying something new and leaning back on an old favorite. I'm especially fond of the black raspberry, the Rocky Mountain Raspberry, the maple walnut, and the Charlie Brown. The Shady Brook location is particularly pleasant: during the day you can stand outside the shop in the shade and listen to the brook babbling down the ravine, or take a seat on one of the rocks in the parking lot.
