    I almost never post 1 star reviews but I felt compelled to share one of the worst service experiences I ever had as a consumer and certainly the worst service at Hillsdale Mall. On 1/24 around 4-5p, we went to GS in Hillsdale mall to buy a transformers toy for my 4 year old. I noticed this promotion tag buy one toy and second toy is 50% off on the shelf above the transformers toys. It would turn out later that I initially missed the fine print noting this applied to pro members but when I asked the associate behind the counter, he told me this promotion applied to all toys in the store without a membership which is why I bought 2 instead of one transformer toy (Optimus Prime Studio Version + Legacy evolution Galvatron Armada) for both my kids. When I went to check out, a second associate (name: Ron) not only told me that there was no promotion for the second toy but that buying a pro membership would cost me more money not less due to the two toys not having promotion applied. I politely refused the membership and reminded him I would only be interested if there was a promotion but he insisted on telling me about benefits of pro membership I would not use without listening or giving me a chance to talk. When I finally insisted that I did not want the membership if it would not result in a promotion and asked why I was told the promotion applied to the toys we chose, his tone overtly aggressive and told me "hey buddy you're talking to the wrong guy here, I really don't care". Then when my credit card did not work with the scanner he asked me if I had another card, I said no and asked to use the scanner in the next register and he refused to even try it saying "all our scanners will not work with your card". I then used cash and he actually gave me the wrong change and REFUSED to give me a receipt citing "we are all out of receipt paper". When I asked what if I have to return the toy he said "all sales are final once you open the box". Finally one of Ron's associates took me to the next register and printed out several receipts (on receipt paper) for me and I left w my kids bewildered. To my fellow shoppers highly recommend avoiding this location and buying online or going to another store until Gamestop fixes the service and communication or retrain their associates at this location starting with Ron.

    This Gamestop has the best layout of any that I've been to. I usually find that in other Gamestops displays are kind of haphazardly plopped around the store which makes for a confusing experience. This one was large and separated by offerings. The first part was segmented by major console and exhibited a lot of games. They smartly had a colorful shelving with lots of stuffed toys that you could see from outside of thestore which were sure to draw people inside out of sheer visual excitement. I beelined for the store when I saw that giant plush Kirby and I'm still thinking about it. The checkout is in the middle of the store which means the employees can kind of see everyone in the store. This is relevant because I was kind of shocked when an employee behind the counter asked if I needed help! I never get service at a Gamestop. The back walls are more of your "accessories" to gaming, so there's a wall with controllers and other devices and all the swag. The swag was really well displayed with t-shirt samples on the walls so you didn't have to rifle through them all.

They've been open since the summer, but I don't I notice them getting much foot traffic, probably due to lack of visibility, parking, or publicity. Tucked along 3rd Ave & Railroad Ave, fans of Japanese anime, gundam, manga, die cast, models, and figurines will find their heavenly spot. This store is jam packed with lots of toys & collectibles & cute display figures, ranging from robots, to monsters to buxom Japanese girls reminiscent of the Akihabara prefecture in downtown Tokyo. They have pre-made figurines, build & paint yourself models, plushies, cards, charms, candies, and keychains. They also sell the necessary quality paints, brushes, and tools to build & perfect your own models. The layout of the store is nice, with one side holding most of the kits available, alongside with nice displays of accessories, toys, model building supplies, a counter, and candy & souvenirs. The other side of the store is like a Japanese anime/manga museum & display! It is one continuous LONG showcase that is well lit, clean, and organized, if some of the most amazing figurines thst you can build (and/or buy). Lots of eye candy here thst I cannot even describe in words, so I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. This store is fun, whether you are into collecting, building, or, just like me, browsing, learning, and gawking. Some reminded me of my childhood watching action cartoons & reading comic books. Others just wowed me with their attention to detail, design, and colors. It is indeed like a candy store here, but the candy is Japanese figurines. I plan to go back soon to buy some kits to see if I can recall & relive my childhood and build up some nice models. Downtown San Mateo is having some sort of retail resurgence for stores other than food or drink, and Akiba HQ, alongside with Nakoko, Clawsome, and Fanloli are leading the charge. With the departure of Talbots and B Street Books, it's nice to have another type of retail store here to browse, shop, and relive memories (or make new ones) in between dinner, movies, and bar hopping. Akiba HQ also has locations in Hayward & Davis, but we are lucky to get one here in San Mateo! Now, you don't have to go to Japantown or Tokyo to get your figurine fix, it's literally right here all in one, tiny, jam-packed store!

They have a lot of tsum tsums and small figures in the blind boxes. Also +1000 stars for having Ace Attorney displayed on their return policy! I suspect I will be dropping a lot of money over the months at this store. I really like cute blind boxes and they had a lot of them that I would have been happy with getting any of the choices on the box!

Everything is priced very fairly and competitive with mainstream retailers, online platforms, and even other retro game shops. They do it all here: retro and new video games, consoles, trading cards, plushies, accessories, and more. I feel truly lucky to have found this spot. It's officially my new go-to for anything gaming-related, whether I need something ASAP, want to get a game disc resurfaced, or just want to pop in and see what's new. Their backroom looks like it's bursting with even more treasures and I'm excited to see how they grow over time. I wish San Francisco had more places like this because the city is really lacking when it comes to true video game stores. We don't even have a Gamestop anymore in the heart of the city. The closest video game store is in Stonestown, which can be very inconvenient to get to. They also have some awesome free-to-play arcade setups and welcome people to just hang out inside, which gives the place a really laid-back, community vibe. If you're looking for a specific game or system and they don't have it, they'll even take your number and give you a call once they track it down. Such a thoughtful touch. I went to the counter, and to be fair, the employee was helpful and gave me a reasonable offer of $365 in store credit, which I agreed to. No issues there. But when we walked over to grab the hobby box, the price had suddenly jumped to $510.99. That's a huge difference, and it happened while I was literally in the store. When I pointed it out, I was told they were "updating prices" and that they could only honor the original price if I had taken a picture of it. That's not how you run a business. Changing prices during store hours--especially while a customer is actively making a purchase--is unprofessional and unfair. Expecting customers to take pictures of price tags just in case they change minutes later is ridiculous. I understand prices fluctuate, especially in collectibles, but updates like that should be handled before opening or after closing--not in the middle of a transaction. This experience left a bad impression, and I'd be cautious about doing business here again.

Showed the manager/owner and provided receipts. He said they would fix the DS because it was sold "refurbished." He said it would be ready in a few weeks, after the new year, and took my contact into. Never heard back. Called the store after the first month came and went. No answer. Months go by and my kid keeps asking about it. I keep calling the location but then I read on their instagram that the shop is permanently closed. But they they're still doing business online. So I reach out to their instagram and email the address on their Shopify, where in fact they are now selling a metallic blue DS, just like the one I bought in December! Still no reply. I went there to sell some baseball cards and walked out of there edified -- I got schooled instead. But I could not be happier about it, for the process by which I, and apparently many others, gage the value of our cards, coins or what have you, is faulty and can lead to frustration and disappointment because you believe that, unlike others with the same items, you are not getting the supposed value of your precious items. Not only did Brandon take the time to explain the process by which we dupe ourselves into thinking we have that special card and will amass quite the premium for it, but demonstrated the process for me in real time. What he showed me was precisely what I did, and was doing, in assessing the worth of my saleable items. I walked out of his pretty snappy business educated and less frustrated. It made sense, and I can now approach my vocation with a different methodology in assessing the value and expected sale price of my coveted coins, ect. I am grateful for Brandon and his store, for at 60 years old, I got schooled. The store itself was stocked with the kind of things gamers fantasize about, and while there, the customers kept coming. This business is obviously doing things the correct way and the store's popularity is testimonial of that. For my part, I always lean toward doing business with the genuine proprietor, even if it means going out of my way a bit to give them my business. I recommend this store for the products available as well as for the pleasant people there operating it. There is parking along the street and room for several cars without having to walk a distance.

Also, even if I remembered they could have kept the money after so much time had passed and I would have fully understood. But nope, they held on to it and even told me about it. I took several gaming hardware items - controllers, adapters, chargers, cases, and a GBA game - to sell because I wanted to get rid of them. I've been a regular customer at this local game shop for years and have always had decent experiences there. When I dropped off the items, the employee at the counter gave me a very firm rundown about policy, percentages, and profit margins right off the bat - not exactly the warmest greeting, but fair enough. They had a backlog of other trade-ins to appraise, so they let me keep the items there and said they'd follow-up over the phone with their prices later, which they did after a couple of days. During that phone conversation with their employee (who was not the employee I dropped off the items with), I asked if she could list out the prices on each item. She provided me with that info and I told her that I agreed to the prices on the smaller items, but that I'd come by in a few days to pick up the GameCube controller because the price was lower than I was hoping for. I didn't argue about it - I just said I'd pass on that one and pick up the rest. About 3 days after that phone call, I came into the store to pick up my items and had what was honestly the worst customer service experience I've had at any local shop, which is why I'm writing this review. There were two employees behind the counter who I recognized from previous visits. After I walked in and asked for my items, one employee handed me the bag and then brought up an old issue from a few weeks earlier where I had attempted to purchase METROID PRIME 4: BEYOND from their website when it was mistakenly listed for $0.00. Immediately after checkout, they had sent me an email revoking the purchase, explaining it was an error on their site. I understood and moved on from it at the time - these things happen. I wasn't actually expecting the game. However, it felt strange to have this brought up again now, especially in a tone that seemed like I had done something wrong by placing the order in the first place. The employee said, "no worries," but the context made it feel like I was being called out rather than reassured. At this point, I was just standing there ready to complete the transaction for the items I'd agreed to sell (a GBA game and one of the cases aforementioned). But then the other employee - the same person I had dropped off the items with initially - told me that they had actually decided to pass on ALL the items and would be offering me $0 instead. I said, "Oh, so you changed your mind from what was offered on the phone?" He then told me that I had haggled with his coworker on the phone and had come back into the store in-person on a different day to push for better prices on all the items. This was completely incorrect. I never came back to the store between drop-off and this pickup, and I never haggled - I simply declined the controller and accepted the other prices. I tried to clarify: "That didn't happen. I didn't do that. You have the wrong information." He dismissed this and launched into a lengthy explanation about their policies and evaluation process, talking over me even when I tried to correct the misunderstanding a second time. His coworker even attempted to interject and redirect the conversation, but he waved him off and kept going. Eventually I just said, "have a good one" and left because I was feeling very uncomfortable. Look, I understand trade-in shops need to make a profit, and I understand that pricing errors happen on websites. What I don't understand is the conflicting information (being offered prices, then being offered nothing), the accusation about behavior I didn't engage in, and the unwillingness to hear me out when I tried to correct the record. I've spent a lot of money here over the years and have always been respectful and nice. I'm disappointed that this is how things ended, but I won't be returning to this shop or spending my money here ever again. I'm posting this so others know to get clear, written confirmation on any trade-in offers and to be prepared for potential communication issues as well as some pretty bad customer service overall - particularly from certain employees.

It turns out they are attached to the neighboring Record Man store, and they suggested I look there for LPs. I would definitely come back and highly recommend!
