This location is awesome. Took in my Xbox series x for an overheating and bluetooth issue, for some reason my controllers unpaired. After a quick diagnosis both repairs were quickly resolved and they answered all of my questions. I'm glad they were able to help me with my issue and now my series x runs smoothly without the issues I was having. My 22 year old twin boys have been purchasing items occasionally from this store since they were kids. One of my sons recently purchased a game controller from them and when he could not find the receipt when he got home (he's pretty sure he didn't receive it), I told him not to worry about it, he used his credit card so he had a credit receipt if need be. Then Murphy's law kicked in and the controller turned out to be defective (some of the buttons didn't work). He took it back with the credit receipt a couple of days later and the same guy who sold it to him refused to take it back! He said he wouldn't accept a credit receipt, it had to be a store receipt. Never in my experience has a store refused a credit receipt, especially not for defective merchandise! For one thing, all you have to do is dispute the charge. The credit card company has obvious proof of purchase! So my son said he was going to dispute it and the guy said "good luck." So now my son has been credited for the purchase by the credit card company, and the store lost money by not being able to return the defective merchandise to the manufacturer! This is poor business and terrible customer service. They've certainly lost my sons' business. My recommendation is avoid this place, buy from Best Buy or Amazon. read more

The games here are overpriced for used games. The employees are always stressed out and make you feel rushed. The store itself is small, cramped and dark. The selection of games is not that good and like I said, the games they do have are overpriced. Every once in a while you will find a great game for a great price but not usually. It's kind of like thrift shopping for video games- you either score a good deal or get totally ripped off. read more

I knew what I was looking but the guy behind the counter said there was no version 5 of the game, when in fact my son was in the week before and verified it was there. So rather than say sorry out of stock, he claimed the last version was 3. So really ... was I such a bother to your ME time that you did some half $&@! search on your register computer pretending that 3 was that last version just to get me out of the store ...because you really needed to be the only body in the store. No one answers the phone at 3555 Clares St location. I have made a dozen attempts to call this store since I moved here in November. Quick & easy stuff like checking inventory or used prices before I go spend money there. I've been a Gamestop customer for over 20 years. My phone call has been answered one time, I was out on a lengthy ~10min hold, & when the realized they had forgotten about me they terminated the line & I had to call back, surprise no reply. EDIT** told their phone is not working after I visited the store. The guy was friendly & helped me resolve a difficult issue. One that would have been made easier had their phone worked ha, get that fixed. read more

I just went in to the store and found a game guidebook for my son's birthday gift. But the book was damaged and ripped in the corner. A guy at the counter check the back door for 10 secs and told me they don't have any. I asked for discount for the damaged copy, but he refused. I simply walked away, and ordered it in Amazon as plan-B. I approgized to my son for I couldn't make it for his birthday. He got the new fresh clean copy next week. I just can't believe he tried to sell me a damaged product with full price. Wonder he really has a copy behind and lied to me to sell the damaged copy. And he showed no sympathy about how I disappointed. I will never go back to this store again. I wish I could put zero-star for this place. read more

I like gamestop because they have good deals on used xbox and xbox 360 games. As for trade-in prices, I think I prefer game crazy in santa cruz. The staff at game stop is friendly and if it is really busy in there, which it often is, then they don't really bother you that much. That said if it is not busy then you might be hassled every couple minutes and it becomes very annoying because they really do not pay attention at all when you say "no thank you i am just looking".....it is as if they have a store policy to ask some customer how they are doing every so many minutes and if you are the only customer then the burden all falls on you... The store is cool though because they have midnight releases and sometimes they even put on events, such as during the Halo 3 release when they put on a full blown Halo 2 tournament to keep the customers happy. This place also has good deals on used controllers and components though I have not had a huge success rate with them being functional (two N64 controllers worked and one did not) . Though the deals are not better than you could find online. If you live in Santa Cruz then this should not be your first consideration for a gaming store because it is too far out of the way. And just in case you did not know, this Gamestop is inside the Capitola Mall in the wing headed towards the food court if you are leaving from the fountain. read more

Typically, I don't like GameStops nor shopping in them, but the customer service at this particular location has sold me. I only deal with this retailer now when I am in the market for videogames. While the product is not unique and can be purchased anywhere else, it is the staff that makes me a loyal customer. Everyone is friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They also work with you and your situation to make a more personal experience. There's only one girl who works here and she's the go to gal for all your gaming questions and needs. While everyone else is very friendly, it's Candy that I usually go to since she has taken the time on more than one occasion to get to know me and what my gaming preferences are. read more

Friendly and informative! Have gone in many times when they store is empty of customers and gotten to have great conversations about up coming games and their input. Even then the store is busy they do their best to be both fair to all the customers and the one customer they are currently dealing with. While as a whole I'm not thrilled with how vast game stop has become it is great to see stores that enjoy their work. read more

My girlfriend and I have been to this location three times. Each time we dealt with the guy who seemed to be the manager - I wish I knew his name but he is a white guy roughly aged 25-30yrs old. Each time this guy seemed very annoyed by our presence and by the fact we had any questions what so ever. He acted very rudely to his co worker as well. When we went in to buy an Xbox One we had questions and he gave us short, angry responses. I asked him a question about backwards compatibility and he repeated himself in a harsh, upset manner that both the Xbox one and One S are both fully backwards compatible. My girlfriend and I walked out of there happy because hey, we got a new Xbox One. We smiled and said "that guy was still in a bad mood he must hate his job". I did not feel compelled to write this review until trying to play my Black Ops 2 game for Xbox 360 only to find out it is not compatible which is why I specifically asked him if it was. If you are in Santa Cruz and want to go to GameStop avoid this location. Again, this guy seemed to be the manager and was always there. I found this gamestop after calling around town trying to get a copy of The Orange Box for Xbox. Having shopped at just about every other game retailer in the area, I feel confident in saying that Gamestop has the best selection, pricing, store layout, and customer service. The rewards service is also probably the best I've seen (I normally never bother signing up for them). The one detractor I could see for some customers, is that the guy at the counter (at least the one who was working there when I went in) seemed like he could come off as a bit condescending to newer gamers/parents buying gifts etc. That being said, if you're serious about gaming, you're sure to feel right at home and will get plenty of help and in-depth feedback about anything in the store. read more

I have always liked this store, but once Chris started as the manager it got a lot better. I know that every time Chris is working, I'm going to have a good experience. He really seems on top of things, especially when the store is really busy (eg. day after Christmas, Black Friday) They have a great selection of used games, lots of Midnight releases for big AAA new games and a good selection of accessories as well. I play games too much to trust a used console so I have no experiences like the others who gave unfavorable reviews, I always buy new for the console but I like having the option to buy cheaper games by buying used. read more

Gamestop chronicles 2: After not being able to find a game for a Christmas present at our local game place, level up,( which we highly recommend.) We decided to go to gamestop. We walked in and grabbed the game, walked up to the counter and were greeted by an apathetic; "number please." We tried to ask a question about whether they had used copies and were met with another "number please." After giving our number, the cashier gave us a used game that was a whole five dollars cheaper than the new game. The only other advantage was an improves return policy, which should have been available for new games. After spending five minutes trying to explain to the cashier that we didn't want to upgrade our gamestop card without using telling him that we avoid gamestop like the plague, we walked out. After my earlier experience with GameStop, I'm ready to wait for level up to restock. The only reason they got two stars was because we got the game in a fairly small amount of time. read more
