We were looking for Pokemon cards and went out of our way to go here based on a yelp review. Cool store, just not what my 6 year old needed.

I came in this area to visit a coffee shop but stumbled upon Comicopolis! It's such a cute comic book shop! They have tons of comics, graphic novels, manga & games! I looked mostly at the comic and game section but the comic section was very organized. They separated current/new issues from the vintage back issues which were alphabetized. I also glanced at the games and there's many lowkey ones & a section for 2 player games. I came across a choose your own adventure game I've been meaning to buy. This was a downtown area so most of the parking was metered street parking. Free parking after 8pm! I'm glad I found this gem and hope to stop by next time I'm in the area. read more

I went in to this Santa Cruz comic book store. There wasn't a comic book, out of place. There were also some old-time games and comic books. Some of the games, were: scrabble, Farkle, Zenga and they had figurines and the legendary 8 ball. They have some cool dice of many shapes and sizes. These were with the Dungeon Dragon game. The gentleman working, seemed a little distracted, because there were about 8 people in the store. This is a small store, but it's full of comics and more. Went to downtown Santa Cruz for a walk and some ice cream, and my boy asks if there's a comic book store around. So I whip out the ol' phone and find Comicopolis on Front Street, just a block away from the main drag on Pacific Ave. They're keeping safe and clean, requiring a mask and providing hand sanitizer at the door-- important especially if you'll be thumbing through the shelves. I asked the guy (assuming manager/owner) if he had any Transformers stuff. Besides the couple books they he had out, he said, let me check in the back... He brought out a few cool ones, and my boy's eyes lit up. Super helpful, almost too helpful! Picked those up for my boy plus an old issue from '84 for myself (I couldn't resist!). My boy couldn't wait to get home so we could read together. As a parent, those are very satisfying words to hear. The next time we roll down to Santa Cruz, we're definitely going to swing by again. read more

Came by last week, guy up front was real helpful, COVID protocols in full effect. The worker gave us some cool, genuine recommendations for a board game. They one we ended up with was based off a graphic novel which sounded like a great concept.. yes they happened to have in stock.. and yes I had to buy the companion piece. Amazing selection of board games especially during these interesting, fast paced, digital times I get all nostalgic and lately have been finding myself going back to more analog and natural habits and settings to help disconnect. I didn't get to see how deep their comic book collection was (after all it is a comic book shop) as I've been out of the collecting scene since I was younger but they were accommodating and had asked if I was looking for anything in particular and if they didn't have it they would be able to order it. My 1st comic store I ever spent my own money on. The owners are very nice and helpful s, with probably one of the most compact selections of comics I've ever seen and it's fantastic! I'm a sucker for nerds, so naturally, I wanted to marry every boy in this store. I ventured in while I was wandering around the Pacific Ave area to grab a quick present for a brave young man getting inked at a nearby tattoo parlor - lo and behold, they had the *exact* comic I was looking for (very obscure). The guy at the counter was helpful and friendly and the selection looked pretty good as far as I could tell. From classics (Marvel, etc.) to manga to foreign comics to unconventional comic/zine type issues, I felt like Comicopolis had a lot of bases covered. And while I realize that I'm not the best person to be reviewing a comic spot (I'm not exactly an expert), I feel like Comicopolis deserves some props. Kapow! read more

Okay let me get my geek on for a moment while I write this review. I've been reading comic books ever since I was in middle school reading my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles graphic novel comics. This place is AWESOME! The staff treats me like a lifelong customer even though I'm not a regular because I never knew it existed until a few years ago. Everything about this comic book store is fantastic! The name, the staff, the selection basically everything. I've only seen the same two guys work here, they must be co-owners. One of them looks like Tony Stark. I went in looking for a figure that I couldn't find and the Tony Stark looking guy offered to order it for me, that was very cool of him to go out of his way like that. Comicoplis is one of the most complete, well stocked comic book stores I have ever seen. It's a very small store but somehow they managed to have everything. They have collectibles galore, old comics, movie tie-ins, figures from DC and Marvel, Dark Horse - if you are looking for something special chances are they have it. It doesn't matter how much of a fan, nerd, fanboy you are or even if you're just a casual fan or just shopping for a gift they will treat you with kindness. I'm proud to say this is one of my favorites stores to shop at. read more

After coming up empty-handed the other day at Atlantis, my girlfriend and I came here a few minutes before close to look for a couple of relatively new comics. I recently moved to Santa Cruz and went to the Santa Cruz bookstore but there were so many people there I decided to find another place. I happened upon Comicopolis and was pleasantly surprised. The game selection was amazing but what impressed me the most was the book section. I spent at least an hour in this wonderful place. I love this place. I started buying comics from them back at their old location (I think it was on Water St.?) when I was still attending UCSC. Then they moved locations to Front St., and a few months after that I moved back down to Los Angeles. They had a great deal for me to ship my comics every 12 issues with a 10% discount for being a distance customer, which pretty much pays for the shipping in itself. They're always really responsive with emails and I absolutely love their comic selection. John & Troy always made me feel really welcome when I stopped by. I'm sad that I don't get to see them in person anymore. If you live in the Monterey area, you should absolutely come here. They are THE. BEST. read more

This is SUCH a cool comic book shop. Wall-to-wall and a beautiful showcasing of everything. I didn't have much time to browse because my parking meter ran out but the gentleman working so pleasant and friendly and helpful - that is my primary reason for reviewing. He took me to the exact comic book I was looking for and showed me additional sections of similar interest. And like I said, my meter ran out so I had to as well, but I will definitely be back for a longer visit because there is so much to see and something for everyone! The staff is awesome, super friendly and knowledgeable. Whether you're hardcore about your comics or just beginning to delve into the medium, you will feel taken care of and welcome at Comicopolis. The store is on the smaller side but the shelves are jam packed with some serious quality books and games, ranging from omnibuses of your favorite series' to one offs from local authors to board games and party games. The content within these walls far surpasses that of some of the larger stores I used to frequent. Bottom line, I live in Los Angeles but I buy my comics in Santa Cruz because though there may be some other truly kickass comic book stores out here, none of them hold a candle to Troy and the gang at Comicopolis. read more

First off, if you're trashed from your visit at Sante Adairius in Capitola like I was, stay away from this place. I drunkenly bought and overpaid for a deck of Cards Against Humanity. It goes on Amazon for $25. My drunk ass was just excited to see the game and paid $48 (with tax, without expansions)!!! Totally my mistake. Had I been sober, I would have laughed and walked out. Basically, I paid an extra $23 for instant, drunken, gratification. So, three stars for being expensive. However, this shop has a great variety of games, a friendly sales associate, and is small and organized. read more

For many years my alliance to ONE comic shop was very wishy-washy. That was all until I found Comicopolis recently after they moved to Front St, at that moment I felt like King Arthur pulling Excalibur from the mighty grips of the rock that held it so tightly. I found they had a wonderful selection of new comics and trades, were well stocked, and also had some out of print gems that I had been trying to get a hold of for some time. Not to mention that staff is amazing - they are nice, knowledgeable, hilarious (ask them to tell you a joke), and fill the essence of cool. One word that was not at the store was pretentious....which is a damn good thing. If you are living in Santa Cruz, or just visiting, make sure you stop by this shop, because in all my time visiting all sorts of comic shops (all over the country), this is a great place to be. thanks guys, a dedicated geek. read more

Visiting Santa Cruz one afternoon, my wife & I stumbled into Comicopolis while wandering through the downtown area. I was amazed how many comics, books and games were inside the store, but still organized and neat. (Let's face it: most comic books stores are usually not very well kept.) I started with the comic books area, then pursued the games section, finally going through the graphic novels. I was impressed with the mix of the regular hits as well as some more obscure titles, both among the comics and the games. Missing was the usual "back issue" section, but there were plenty of different graphic novels and trade paperbacks instead. My wife picked up a Neil Gaimen compilation while I found a cool Image Comics TPB in the Sale section (in the back, to the right of the board games). We will be back the next time we visit Santa Cruz! read more

Came back in to pick up a couple of Sandman comics and some more boards/ bags, and my eyes led me astray to the adorkable Space Invaders 550-piece jigsaw puzzle. It was a serious toss-up between this one and the Wonder Woman covers puzzle. But man, the soft spot in my heart for Space Invaders prevails. Same reliably goofy guys working behind the register. As a carrying member of the true geek squad(not those bozos from Best Buy who overcharge you to pretend the have a clue about fixing computers), it is an obligation that I have a preferred Comic Book venue. I love math, chess, science fiction, all things animated, and of course comics. What I hate are condescending know-it-all nerd despots who run their comic fiefdoms like petty narcissistic tyrants. For this reason I come to Comicopolis. Although I live in San Francisco, I make a monthly pilgrimage to Santa Cruz to patronize this establishment. Troy and John run a fantastic store. The title selection is top notch. There is a great balance between Indy and mainstream books. The store has character, but is not chaotic. The books are properly categorized and displayed. In general, the store is inviting and well organized. The real value is that Comicopolis is run by two guys who really appreciate their customers. They have a fantastic subscription service which allows me to have all of my favorite titles saved behind the counter. There offer numerous subscriber sales and a punch card that can be redeemed for merch when I have spent a certain amount. Troy and John know the material they sell. These guys learn what I like and make an effort to introduce me to excellent new material. Am I a bit of a sycophantic fanboy. Probably. Even so Comicopolis is a 5 star business for the simple fact that they offer great merchandise and truly value their customers. read more

By far, the BEST comics shop in Santa Cruz, and probably in northern California. Good prices, an always helpful staff, and great services for collectors and enthusiasts. Great store for new readers and veterans. The thing that really sets this store apart is the focus on the books. There are only a few collectables, posters, etc. There are books everywhere, and well sorted. Anything they don't have, books or whatever, they are happy to order. I really miss this place. After moving to San Francisco I cannot find a comparable shop. Everything has that dingy musty basement feel to it up here. Not at Comicopolis! Troy, the owner, has the best customer service mentality in the world. He gets to know people in the community and treats them like a best bud. Prices are good (note: comic book industry sets most of the prices not shop owners). He also keeps his place looking stylish and organized. Comicopolis is my favorite shop in "Nerd Alley" in downtown Santa Cruz. It's a great place to browse and it's difficult to leave empty handed. If you're looking for something specific, Troy will order it. The staff is incredibly friendly and super helpful! You can tell that they love working there and know a lot about comics. Their selection of board games is the best. They sell my favorite games here. Magic, Dominion, Munchkin, Fluxx... Only the best. I've been going here since before it was here. I'm by no means the oldest customer that they've had but this place has always inspired loyalty in me. Maybe it's because I have an unreasonable distaste for Joe's and have always had a unreasonable distaste for it. Troy is kick ass and is a genuinely nice person. Always willing to share on comics and is excellent at customer service. They've got a good selection and the store is organized in a manner that makes sense.
