The independent ACE hardware stores tend to be a lot better organized and helpful than the Home Depot. My local ACE is no exception. Very much l-o-v-e this particular store. There is always someone to greet incoming patrons & direct them to area of interest. Friendly & everybody really knows their sh__...not only about their stock but just as vital is they understand the How-To-Process & what you'll need to have on hand to successfully complete a well-down project. I am always very impressed with Kayla's knowledge about products and what jobs they are used for. She is very friendly and always ready to help. Once again I am so upset with this store. Another project derailed by their lack of customer service. As an Ace Rewards member they refuse to honor the measly $5 coupon they send me after spending $250 because it has the address of another Ace on it where I used to live. They also refuse to exchange like parts purchased at any other Ace. Don't give these greedy people your business- they don't care about you - just every penny they can squeeze out of you and most every hardware store in town offers lower prices on the same stuff. read more

Horrible customer service. I was hoping to replace some fiskar scissors (which have a lifetime warranty ) because they split in half when cutting something. The manager , Ian, refused to give me eye contact and told me nothing is returnable , and they don't honor the lifetime warranty of the products they sell. I asked him how I might get a replacement he said he didn't know and started to walk away. Again without eye contact. Perhaps the store shouldn't sell products with warranties if they have no idea how that works read more

I've been here 7 or 8 times now and it's always been a great experience. Within a minute or two I'm always politely asked whether I needed help with anything, and in a genuine way, not a 'Please say no, but I have to ask or I'll get fired' way. They take their time, too-- once helped me try to find a screw that could replace a stripped one I'd brought in for almost ten minutes. One or two of the times I've gone the line has been 3-4 people long, and I've been next to an entitled old person who's never worked retail (you know the type) throwing a fit about not having someone to serve them immediately, so I'm sure one of them will complain about that on here eventually. But it's not a being shortstaffed problem (unlike the Safeway next door, which has lines of 5-6 people because the store is permanently running on like half the people it really needs). There's usually 4-5 employees there on a Saturday, they're just not always immediately available to come to the register because they're busy taking ten minutes to help someone like me find a screw. And honestly, I'd rather wait in line two extra minutes than waste a half hour wandering around the store with no idea what I'm doing. Also @ Santa Cruzer below me, you are one of the entitled old people I'm talking about. "Good customer service" means being helpful and polite, not giving you whatever you want if you throw a big enough tantrum because "the customer is always right". This includes changing the store music (which I've never heard) because it is not you or Offeray's frankly racist personal taste. read more

All has been fine here previously, until my most recent visit. I came in looking for a specific small clip, and started by searching the shelves for it. I found one, except in the wrong color. I approached an associate to ask whether they might have the item in a different finish, and he was much less than kind and helpful. This was an older man with glasses (his name was Ralph, I believe?). Not only did he act bothered that I (a 5'0" tall female), walked up to him while he was having a personal conversation with a coworker (which he waited to finish first before acknowledging me), but he was also was incredibly rude about assisting me. I told him what I was looking for, and he walked me to the aisle. I explained that I'd already looked for it, and I'm honestly not sure if exact words since I was taken aback a but, but he said something to the effect of "well why did you ask me then if it's not out here?" I asked him if it might be with the deliveries and he replied condescendingly "it's not like I can know every item in there until I see it- I'm not a mind reader." He told me I could come back after the delivery had been I stocked in a few hours. Needless to say, I didn't bother going back to check, and got the item elsewhere. Ace is certainly NOT the place with the helpful hardware folks, and they would like you to believe. read more

Very helpful place. The aisles have really cleaned up and ordered neatly since they moved down two stores. Back in college I had bought a plunger for the toilet, didn't use it and tried to return it... they laughed and explained to me why it's just not sanitary to accept a return on that. Really nice about it. And it makes so much sense now... makes me laugh. FYI - If you want to copy keys here, it's $2.25 per plain key, and $2.95+ for colored or graphic design keys. read more

I love this Ace Hardware shop! They usually have what I want but I do think compared to other hardware stores in the area, it runs a bit small. The staff gets an A+ for being incredibly nice and always helpful. The second I walk into the door there is alway someone that asks what I'm looking for. I was in need of some extension cords and clothes hanger. Since this shop is branded with familiar ACE hardware, I shopped here. In general coming from bay area, the prices seemed marked up twice or three times normal. e.g. 8 plastic hangers were for over $6. The extension cords were ranging from $15 to $35. I ended up purchasing due to lack of time to go to Target or costco stores, but still the prices were almost a rip-off. Won't shop again at this specific ACE hardware. read more

Reasonably stocked hardware store with convenient parking. But the staff are in serious need of training in customer service. Usually, when I ask for the location of an item, the clerk will simply give the aisle number but rarely will they actually help locate what I'm looking for. Offers of help when searching? Forget it. At the cash register, today I was "greeted" by a young man doing some silly project involving cutting up little pieces of paper. This place has the most helpful staff I've ever met. I don't know if they're just bored because the place is so small, or they're trained to be that nice, but every time I walk in there, I'm immediately greeted and asked by every single dude if I need assistance. Usually I hate when people are this involved because I feel like they're smothering, but if you say "no thanks" they back off and leave you alone to shop on your own. I went in to buy an extension chord and I had picked out an expensive one, but the cashier was so nice that he told me that there was a cheaper one that was just as good. I like hardware stores. I like small local hardware stores. I like going into a hardware store, finding what I need, getting my questions answered, paying a reasonable price for the pleasure of not having to drive to the GigantoDepot, and leaving with my stuff. I don't like walking into a hardware store , asking what aisle whatever mundane ordinary item I am looking for is on, and being told 'Oh, We don't carry that." My daughter has just graduated from UCSC. We are getting her packed up. I walked into the store and asked "where can I find the boxes?" "Oh, we don't carry that. You can get them at the Soquel store." Really? The hardware store in the middle of flipping West Santa Cruz. In June. And you don't carry boxes and I can drive down to Soquel to get them? "REALLY?" And all of a sudden I realized that I hardly knew the inside of this store because almost EVERY TIME I have come here I have been stopped at the door with "Oh." "Oh? Well I guess if I have to drive all the way to the Soquel store I can go one exit further and go to the HomeSteroids Store and get them there. For half the price. But thanks. There's not too much I can say about this place -- it's a standard hardware / home improvement store with an emphasis on customer service. It's not really my favorite place to get DIY supplies but the prices are reasonable and the location is convenient. PROS: - Knowledgeable staff - Occasional coupons available. NEUTRAL: - The staff are eager to help... which is nice however it can be a bit strong. As a customer, I'd prefer them to be available when I need them but not asking if I need help every 15 minutes. - Average prices. CONS: - Smaller selection of items. - They have a section that is blocked off and requires staff escort. I purchased a gas BBQ here last week. Since it was the last one, I took the display model instead of one that is boxed. The manager was helping me and knew immediately it was not going to fit in the back of my Honda CRV. He directed his team to "Put it in my truck" and said "I'll be by in 15 minutes". We just left this store, we have been shopping here for years, today however, I have for the first time experienced a very rude cashier by the name of Alycia. When my husband and I approched she was already giving us an unwelcoming look, My husband proceeded to put in our card she asked do you have a pin number as if to imply it was not our card, I said of couse, My husband entered it and we purchased our order . She gave me a look going out the door, I can only feel like she did this due to the fact we are an interracial couple. We have never been treated so rudly in 30 years of patronage at this store since before the mall was redesigned. We will of course come again but do not wish to deal with this individual. read more

But for the two times that I've been here, the staff is super friendly and have really good advice for what product is best for your problematic household situation. They told me they cut pvc and chain but wouldn't even consider scoring a wooden yardstick for me to snap apart at home. This store is very small and their selection is very limited. Not hardly something I would expect from an Ace. I've gotten to the point that I usually bypass it after being turned away too many times for normal home improvement items that they just don't have. Lastly, I called to inquire about my 1 1/2 year old industrial strength ace brand garden house with a lifetime warranty that sprang a leak. I was told to take it up with Ace directly. When I asked for the appropriate number to call, I was told to go to the Ace web site. Thanks geniuses, I can surf the Internet, I thought perhaps you would stand behind your brand and the warranty or at least give me the correct number to call.
