Adriana was EXTREMELY RUDE and is rude to other employees if they talk back. DEFINITELY don't recommend this store. She pretended not to hear me when asking if a product was available in store and while shopping I briefly overheard her talking bad about employees and how she "could care less about them so she can get what she wants because it's all that matters." She is two faced and uses "being nice" as a facade to get what she wants and don't be fooled. It was absolutely disgusting to hear. I called the store for target shooting ammo in stock information, and the only person allowed to sell ammo (or apparently even allowed to look at the boxes of ammo on the shelves), isn't there until afternoon. Big 5 needs to get more employees certified to be able to sell ammunition to customers during their normal hours. Getting an Federal Firearms License for ammunition sales isn't rocket science. I gave one star, because they at least have some ammo for sale, when the licensed employee does decide to show up. read more

We went in to Big 5 to look at pickleball paddles. The three friendly staff who were standing at the check-out area greeted us as we walked in. We said that we were looking for pickleball paddles. One young man, Cameron, spoke up and said that he played pickleball and could help us. Big 5 had a pretty good selection of paddles. Cameron picked up the paddle that he recommended for beginners and said what he liked about it. We were looking for lighter weight paddles and he easily found the listed weight for each paddle we looked at. We eventually decided on a fairly lightweight paddle that was $75. Cameron also asked if we had enough pickleball balls and showed us their selection of balls and which ones he recommended for beginners. It was nice to talk to someone about sports equipment who actually played the sport. He was knowledgeable and nice and was a pleasure to deal with. If you're new to pickleball and need equipment and want to shop locally at a brick and mortar store where you can actually pick up and feel the differences between paddles, go to Big 5 and talk to Cameron. read more

Before today I probably would have given three or four stars but my experience left bad taste. First a young woman assistant manager starts telling a group of employees that they are all getting warnings. Mind you this is next to register, in full sight and hearing of customers. Apparently passing warning from "Steve". Guess at least it wasn't laying them ofv on a zoom call, but still showing lack of respect to workers. After that I completed my purchase and then checked the reciept. I had been charged 5$ more than price on display. Instead of simply refunding me the 5$, the clerk refunded whole purchase. Told him I still wanted shoes, just wanted to pay price on the tag. Ended up walking out in disgust. If you like incompetence, store for you. Sad part is that there are only a few options left in the county, Big 5 is close to having monopoly. read more

I would rate the store itself a 2 but I'm giving 5 stars because of Alex, the employee who actually took the time to help me at Big 5 in Capitola. I was looking for a specific sweater online and since the availability was limited the website said to call the store and check. I called and the person I spoke to said it was there. I showed up and yes, it was there, but it happened to be in boxes not yet opened. They were in shipping boxes. The employee I spoke to told me to call later and maybe merchandise would be put away by then. I called later and it had not been done yet. They said they would have it done by the end of the day to call a little later. I called back the next day and was still getting the same answer. It was still in boxes not yet brought out. This time I spoke to a woman named Alex who was extremely helpful and told me she would go and check the boxes right after speaking with her on the phone. She offered to call me back after she found it so I can pick it up since she knew I wanted it. Sure enough, she called me back within 45 minutes letting me know she found it. I was shocked and so thankful! What I had been asking for from a different employee for a day and a half Alex was able to accomplish in less than an hour. I understand it's a busy time of the year but the fact that she did take the time to help me out instead of saying "I'm unable to locate it" was amazing! She was nice to chat with while doing my transaction when I went in to pick it up and I hope she knows her help is much appreciated! read more

I stopped in here recently on my lunch break to pick up a new pair of tennis shoes. There were large signs all over the shoe area saying buy one pair of sale shoes, get a second pair half off. I didn't really need two pairs of tennis shoes so I picked out a second pair of sale sandals to take advantage of this nice deal. When I went to get in line there were already three people ahead of me and one harrassed looking sales person at the counter who was clearly out of his depth trying to do a return. After about five minutes he called another associate over for assistance. When I finally got to the front the woman who rang me up did not give me the half off on my second pair of shoes. I asked her about it and she said she'd have to check with the manager. Then her phone rang, she answered it and proceeded to have a conversation with the person at the other end, ignorning me. When she finally hung up she didn't check with anyone and said in a very rude tone, "Yeah, those are not part of the sale." I didn't purchase the second pair of shoes. I have been a long time customer of Big 5, but this will be my last trip in. Disorganized, crowded and with a downright rude staff ... I won't be back. I'm going camping next month and need to purchase quite a bit of camping equipment - I'll be taking my business to Outdoor World. read more

I've been to this location so many times. Because there was a nice lady who cared about CUSTOMER SERVICE. Unfortunately, she was not there today, instead there were a bunch of employees who don't know what a CUSTOMER SERVICE about. The store was not even busy when I got there. When I asked for a help, this guy said "I will help you. Just give me a second." He was too busy putting a price tags. I waited for ten minutes just watching him. He was asked for help by another customer. Then he just followed that guy. He even passed in front of me. Totally ignored!!! He never came back and help me. I will never come back again. Love shopping here when I do. The prices are incredibly priced compared to other competitors. The last couple times I walked out and looked at my receipt noticing I paid less than sticker price due to unforeseen sales or promotions. I am very impressed with this store. Been going there since the beginning of the year. Recently I was looking for Size 11 2E NB shoes and they did not have them in stock. However, the manager, Anna and the person at the counter, Leora, did a great job taking care of problem. What they effectively did is to ensure the next shipment had the product (correct size and shoe) and took my contact information to be able to inform me when it arrived. What happened to all the good workers!? I've been shopping at this Big 5 since I moved into the area a few months ago. In the past I was greeted by friendly cashier's and helped by a great sales group. But in my past two visits these last 3 days, it's changed so much. Just yesterday, I was being ignored by the salespeople and had to ask the cashier for help in shoes. When they came up to me, it looked like they were being forced to help me. No friendliness or even any follow through when I needed additional help. They handed me shoes and walked away. I had to flag one down to get them to help me again. At one point I asked if he could check if they had my size at the Watsonville store and he sighed as he reluctantly said "yea..." I just stood up, told him to forget it, and walked out. I ended driving out to Watsonville to get my size along with a few other things. This new Capitola crew could learn a thing or two from Watsonville. read more

I purchased a pair of shoes here and was overcharged. When I brought in the newspaper ad and the box that clearly had the sale price on it, they refused to honor the sale price. They told me that the model I purchased was excluded in the sale even though the ad clearly stated ALL models. It was only a $5 difference. The sales manager Michael Poller refused to honor their ad and in turned lost a customer who regularly shopped there. The customer service at Big 5 is horrible and for a $5 difference, they have in turned lost much much more. read more

Just a little update. Michael is is gone, and that was a bummer until I met the new sheriff of Big 5 Capitola. Leorna has taking Michael's place in most excellent customer service and kindness. Again, Big 5 had a great sale on some shorts that were not stocked at this store and Leorna found them in two other stores and little time later, there were my shorts. I have been in customer service all my days as a working stiff and have ran few companies before buying my own and just watching her a few times with other customer's and employee's I can just tell that Leorna is definitely a take charge person and will go far in the future, either with Big 5 or a even bigger corporation.
