SHOPPING REVIEW: We're strolling around Capitola and walk into this shop to just browse. We weren't expecting the nice selection of clothing. Their clothes are a bit on the dressier side for beachwear. Hubby wanted some cargo shorts, but all of their shorts were kinda dressy. He did find a nice shirt though. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the dressing rooms are open. It was a nice find.

My fiance and I signed up for an 1.5 SUP with an instructor and I cannot recommend it enough! Check in was a breeze - you sign the waiver and then your instructor takes you out to the water. It was a particularly overcast and windy day so we started out in the river by the ocean. I highly recommend doing this because the river is beautiful, and you get to pass by interesting houses and sights! Plus, you can get some great photos against beautiful background. Shoutout to Neil, who was a fantastic instructor. He kept his eye out on both of us and offered precise and helpful instructions to navigate the waters. I only did SUP once before so his guidance was much appreciated. After about half an hour, Neil offered to take us out into the ocean. I was skeptical because the wind still looked pretty fierce, but Neil taught us how to observe the ocean, how to get out and come back in. I am so glad I did it! There was about a 5-minute stretch where I was stuck and couldn't control my board, but Neil came to the rescue and helped me in getting loose from the wind's grip. We even saw a seal chilling on a boat out there! What a wonderful and fun way to spend your weekend morning!

Capitola Beach Company is the place to go for lessons, rentals and all your beach needs. My daughter had her 1st lesson with Matt 10 years ago. My nephew wanted to surf so we knew we had to take him here for his 1st lesson. His instructor was Neal. He loved it. The instructor was amazing, patient and professional.

Beware when you purchase anything from this store, you need to be sure what you buy or else you won't get a refund but only give you a store credit or an exchange which is inconvenient for tourist like me. I bought something and changed mind less than hour later, but the store only offered a store credit/exchange. When I was there, felt like I have to buy something since I have staff beside me left and right telling me that "that's nice", which I don't find it as a good customer service but felt like being pressured instead. I could have check the return policy before purchase, but totally didn't expect they only give a store credit/exchange. First time I encountered a store with this kind of return policy. Also, purchased 2 items, paid a bag for 25 cents and they made the items fit on a tiny bag. I asked for a bigger bag but the girl said, "it will both fit in here".

My daughter took less son last week and loved it. She likes it so much, she has another lesson planned for today at 3 pm.

We were in Capitola and wanted some paddleboard rentals and they had a set up near the beach. These guys were amazing!!! My daughter wasn't super thrilled about going on the ocean, so the guys walked her and her friends' boards down to the river for them. They spent an hour SUP'ing and had a great time. Awesome customer service and great rates. My daughter wants to try surfing next trip and I talked to them about it. They said a one on one would be best if she isn't feeling super confident or a two-one private lesson. He said Capitola is a great place to learn and several of their instructors learned here. She is beyond excited so it looks like we will be back next summer. Great job you guys!! Thank you for your help!!

Went out paddle boarding for the first time, and I had a blast! Most of the group I was with have all paddled before, so I didn't need an instructor to give me lessons. The staff member was helpful and brought out my board to the water, and have me a quick overview on what to do. With a high temperature of 82, we were there in the morning when the fog was still in. Let's face it, I'm always cold, and no I'm longer allowed to be in the sun, so I'm getting a wetsuit! The suit was totally worth it, and it was an hourly charge of $6. The entire time I was on the board, I kept thinking about how my face, hands and feet were going to stay warm. We headed out past the pier, where we got to watch a ton of brown pelicans diving for fish. I think the whole idea of paddle boarding is to paddle, but I kept finding myself staring at random things, and really enjoying the view. On the return in I was given instructions on what to do (getting back to shore is harder?!?) and wondering if I could just simply stay out on the ocean. But it turned out to be really easy, and cruised right into the sand. I didn't even get my suit wet.

I have purchased the greatest trucker hats from the store. I love them, I got them for my whole family. We have also had the absolute pleasure of taking surf lessons from Paul who works on the beach. If you've been afraid, intimidated, and or wanted to try surfing do yourself a favor and visit Paul at the Capitola Beach Company. They are affordable, have great service and you will have a blast! Don't miss out on this great weather!

The yelp page says "The Santa Cruz Harbor location is the best place to get on the water to learn stand up paddle board." I have paddle boarded a few times, and I know the basics. However, my experience with the harbor is that it is not friendly for beginners, or even somewhat experienced paddlers, let alone complete novices. I've paddle boarded a few times. When I went here, I have complimentary access, and a person was assigned to go with me on another board. That was a good idea. However, I did not have prior knowledge of the Santa Cruz harbor where we were going, and so went into the session unaware of many big pieces of information that I felt were important. I was not given any knowledge of what to expect with paddle boarding in the harbor - how to deal with various obstacles, what route I would be taking, and so was taking live direction from the owner along with my companion for about 5 minutes, and later was following the companion. I was given some small amount of instruction about the basics of paddle boarding - I had paddle boarded before, but did not know many skills, and then was sent on my way in a narrow harbor with docks and boats on each side, and boats coming and going through the harbor. I believe the harbor itself requires at least an intermediate level of paddle boarding skills - muscle power, techniques, stamina, and knowledge of best practices with encountering boats, at minimum. I learned this in real time, and it was very challenging. Also, staying straight in the harbor requires constant paddling - it is relatively narrow, with boats on each side, and incoming and outgoing boats. At least the time that we went, we could not even take a break from paddling when going against the tide to return back. If we took a few seconds break, we risked drifting to the side and hitting a docked boat and falling off. At one point my companion took off, and I was struggling to do a mandatory U-turn to head back. I hit the harbor wall and fell off. Falling off happens, I understand, but it was a big challenge to get back on, I had to crawl on the bit of outcrop to do it. Later, I hit a docked boat and was knocked off. I was in the water, unable to get back onto my board - it requires an incredible amount of core muscle power (I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that it's nearly impossible). So I held onto the dock to try to crawl up. I felt a shock, twice - it turns out the dock's renter had put electrical wire on it to prevent sea lions from jumping into their boats. I was barely able to then muscle up and get back onto my board. Then, I found my companion and we were nearing the original spot, when a big boat was coming towards us. When you're on a paddle board, boats do not move for you, at least from what I saw. Our instinct was to go to the big dock, then the boat driver yelled out they were docking, at the spot we were trying to go to. So after some stressful, fast, strong, paddling we were able to get out of the way. I share this because I want to show the reality of paddle boarding in this area. It can be incredibly strenuous, and at times stressful. If you decide to use this rental business, at the very least ask the owner what exactly you can expect (because it wasn't disclosed). You need to be an intermediate or higher paddleboarding. I am a decent, sufficient paddle boarder, but this area is quite high level and should be strictly only open to higher levels. In conclusion, I don't recommend paddle boarding as a beginner or learning to paddle board in the Santa Cruz Harbor. This area appears to require a lot of experience.

Sup Shack was unexpectedly closed (hours and webpage said they were open, the number listed didn't connect, and there was no note). The Hostess at Crow's Nest recommended Kayak Connection! It turned out to be a phenomenal experience! Milan (sp?) talked us through everything, made sure we all had well-fitted life vests, and the office recognized my step-daughter's 16th birthday with a free Santa Cruz sticker. It's true that the construction impedes the experience to an extent- Milan had to call the foreman to have us escorted through, but they did so promptly ensuring minimal disruption of our experience. We got assistance boarding, and we were especially impressed with Milan's patience with my step-daughter, who has Down Syndrome and needed some extra help. He was super patient and kind! We really appreciated that, unlike with Sup Shack, we were given "free rein" during our hour outing, except for needing to follow common sense safety rules. As soon as we were done, we called the number on the kayak paddles, and Milan was down in a jiffy to assist us back. We saw a seal, quite a few crab, many birds, and friendly boaters. We felt the price of $65 for an hour per double kayak (including life vests, paddles, the kayak, and assistance) was a very fair value. Highly recommend this exceptional and reliable business for your next outing!
