This place is pretty awesome. A good selection of all sorts of retro games and accessories, from ATARI 2600 to reasonably modern Xbox 360/PS3. If you're looking for newer than that, go back to GameStop or something- this place is old school cool. B) Game Over Videogames is a small chain, so there are multiple locations. This location is a bit newer than its counterpart further north, and slightly less well-organized, imo. However, my brother and I were on the hunt for particular items, so we hit up both in the same day to see what each had. Of course their selections were a bit different just because of what people had brought in recently. I personally was looking for ATARI 2600 cartridges (and when I said so, the employee was like "That's not something I hear much." LOL), and they had plenty priced reasonably between $2-10. The employee working there was helpful and knowledgeable. This location has a corner where you can test/demo games before you purchase, with a TV, comfy couch, and consoles already hooked up for use. Pretty neat. There's also some community art that's videogame-inspired for sale on the walls toward the back, which is also cool. You'll also find a small selection of modern things for purchase like plushies, hats/lanyards/wallets, etc. read more

I am very disappointed and appalled by the lack of ethics on behalf of Game Over Videogames. I had been a long-time customer of Game Over Videogames, but it is apparent that they no longer deserve my loyalty. I responded to an email where they were offering $100 for Dreamcast systems and was only offered $60 ($80 store credit) for ALL the items in the attached photos at the Austin S. Lamar store. I guess they think very little of customers and feel that once they "sucker them in" with a potential offer they can low ball the offer and the customer will just roll over and take it since they are already there. read more

I've been shopping here for quite a bit, and i'm never disappointed when I walk of out of the store, if it be with goods or not. Though small, they have just about everything here, and being more of a retro video game enthusiast, Game Over is my favorite video game store to go to. If it be looking for a particular item or just browsing, the customer service has always been friendly. While buying a Ps2 parts and repair bundle, the employee threw in a free third party controller, in which I still use with the 25 dollar Ps2 I was able to repair. I would suggest this local store over any Gamestop and definitely worth at least a look. read more

This place is terrible. I will never buy anything from this place again. Bought a GameCube here to be nostalgic and relive my childhood but it's the worst decision I ever made. Came with very cheap cords and only one controller and only worked for about a week before it would not read any games anymore. I'm extremely disappointed. Plus I walked into the store and they made us purchase everything online and I couldn't even pick it up in store and the lady was VERY rude about that too. I bought some games as well and now I probably will have to get a wii or something to play my games. I hope this store has to close because of the internet. I was order 1904 online if you wanna look it up and there WAS a woman working there at the time- she was a bit heavy set and shorter. This looks like the only Lamar location. When I first walked into Game Over, I had a moment where time stood still. Just like an 80's teen movie, my mind was sent into a montage of the good ol days of gaming. I sat and drooled over an Atari 2600 housed in a glass display. Alongside it were other platforms that I haven't seen in years, many of them still in the box. As I looked on, I saw an array of video games from my childhood. Everything from Kirby to Mario to Ninja Turtles to Ninja Gaiden, they had it all, and plenty of it. I was approached by one of the workers, Davide. He was just as excited about their products as I was, which made the experience that much better. There is a certain beauty about two grown men squealing over retro video games. He helped me find everything I needed, which in the wide selection of games, was not easy. He even went as far as hooking up an NES to one of the monitors to let me play a few games. (WARNING: There is a rule in place that if your video game skills are lacking, there is mandatory taunting. Thankfully I was not in that position.) The only downfall of Game Over is that the prices are a little high. Each of the popular SNES games was over $20, which seemed a little steep. The workers might come off as somewhat snooty to those who have little gaming experience, but the same can be said for any video game store. I will continue to be a patron of Game Over, and I would put it at the top of any retro gamers "Places to Go" list. read more

I want to like Game Over Video games. I really do, but the staff is about as friendly as the A&F guy that is only there until he gets his modeling career off the ground, and glances at you for a second to see if you would be good enough to be even wearing clothing such as A&F so you have to yell at them "what the fuck are you looking at!" so they can be reminded of the fact that they only make 6 dollars an hour. They get props for everything that they carry, I never thought I'd see a Neo Geo home system ever again, but they have it. They even have the Nintendo R.O.B.! the R.O.B.! But the prices are ridiculous, not only that, but they seem to think that somehow that gives them the right to mark up the price tag however they see fit. My wife and I went in one day, I had a an excited fit about how awesome the game Super Mario RPG was, we saw that the price tag on it was 34.99, so she decides she was going to surprise me for my birthday by buying me an SNES and Super Mario RPG. So she does her research, confirms the price of both an SNES and Super Mario RPG. Then emails Game Over. They email back telling her that Super Mario RPG will be worth 90.00 dollars, and that it is up for grabs by several other people so she should hurry. That kind of shady business dealing is something that I would not appreciate anywhere. Correction: My wife just let me know that the price of the game was $70 not as bad as $90 but... read more

Gameover is my favorite video game store. There are so many reasons to love this place. For one, as a female gamer, I often have to face sexism (less so now than a few years ago, thankfully). I am often either ignored completely or treated like a moron in other stores, but not at Gameover. They treat me like I know what I'm doing, without being unhelpful. Its the perfect blend. Additionally, the selection is huge. Every console ever created, and it seems like the older the console, the more games they actually have for it, which is inverse to the typical. The good ole SNES got me started at the age of 5, and here I can find even some of the most obscure titles I never had as a kid. The staff are awesome and welcoming. I actually used to sit in here on summer afternoons and just chat with them. They even pulled up a seat for me. They just want to hang out and share a love for gaming. They're always helpful and always knowledgeable. Their buybacks are also generous. I sold them a bunch of complete junk games recently for everything from N64 to Wii and got $16. Let me reiterate, that these games were bad, we're talking A Bug's Life for N64 bad. Overall this store is near perfect. I docked a star due to the typically low selection of present generation titles, but that's not really their specialty anyway, there's 2 Game Stops on Brodie for that. Also, the store's awesome selection makes it pretty cramped, but its cramped with greatness, so I guess that's okay. read more

I really dig this place. I usually buy games for the Atari 2600, but have purchased Gameboy Advance, PS1, 2, and 3 games, as well as other stuff like T-shirts, joysticks, and game-themed candy tins. The prices are very fair for what amounts to a retro gaming boutique. It's like visiting an 8-bit museum where you can play with and buy the exhibits! And it certainly beats eBay in the instant gratification department. The staff are basically diehard retro gamers, super friendly, and they possess some seriously deep lore on certain platforms. Sometimes, it's great to just walk in to exchange lore... but please do stop by and support this local business. And I have to address some of these reviews... Stock is a liability. Like any business, they're here to make money, not hand it out. Sell your stuff on eBay if you don't like what they're offering for your old games (that you don't want anymore, mind you). You won't be happy with the trade in values at the chain stores either... I just had a really bad experience with this store. I called a few weeks back to order a Retrolink SNES to USB adapter and the guy on the phone assured me it would work in Linux. After I picked it up, it is defective and will not register "up" or "left" on the controller. I googled the problem and found this is a known defect between that adapter and Linux. "No big deal" I thought. Surely Game Over will give a refund (or at least exchange) on a defective item. Nope! The guy behind the counter was a complete jerk about it and said to "just buy a PC like everyone else." Basically he said they do not support Linux and he can't do anything. I'm sure that's not an actual store policy, he just didn't want to do the work of processing a return. Definitely will never return to this store again, which is a bummer because they do have a great game selection and I like to support local game shops. read more

If you're looking for a recommendation, or maybe something vintage, they can usually help you out. However, if you're looking for games for a newer console (like Nintendo Wii), the pickings are usually slim. The "QB Eagles" (Pros) *Extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. *Their mailing list offers some great coupons and specials, but their prices are still reasonable without. *Decent vintage gaming selection. Best in South Austin? The "M. Bisons" (Cons) *This store carries fewer games (including no imports) and is much smaller than their north store. *Game selection for newest consoles is usually pretty barren compared to competitors like GameStop. read more

This place is a diamond in the rough, it's the videogame equivalent of a Mom & Pop's video store but with games to buy. You just can't find places like this anymore, the staff is very helpful and goes out of their way to make sure you're getting what you want, and that you know everything about it. Case in point, I was getting an older game that is known to have battery backup issues, they had already put a new battery in it for me so I wouldn't have to worry. Crazy eh? But no, that's marvelous customer service to me. They have pretty much every system you can think of, harkening back even to the golden era of gaming that is the Atari 2600 age. They'll even whip out the system and let you play the games. The prices are great and below eBay so why the heck aren't you there right now spending your money at a local business and waxing nostalgic with people just like you. Good selection. I love being around these old games. They come at a premium however. Don't even attempt to negotiate or speak harshly of their prices, the employees shoot it down quickly and effectively. Which is fine I guess, it's nice to see a small business serving this niche, even at a cost. My main issue with this place is prices. Every RPG, uncommon, high budget, and sought after game here goes for $20+ regardless of quality, fun, or common market value (eBay, amazon). Strangely enough they do not charge much more for the same titles boxed and complete, which typically command higher prices. Got "Final Fantasy" (NES) complete in box for $25.00 here. My only other gripe is that they don't really sell first party licensed console controllers here. Only had 3rd party Chinese manufactured NES and SNES controllers. Overall a thumbs up, but gets expensive quick. read more

Retro gaming fans wet dream, but do not come here looking for anything from the current generation as it is not that type of place. Now if you want any console, game, or accessory from the Magnavox Odyssey through the Xbox then look no further. I did not make any purchases but all items are well priced and easily marked so you will always know what you are paying for that old copy of Top Gun or Pitfall. I spent the better part of an hour just taking a trip down memory lane and speaking to the employees about old games and even a couple of obscure import consoles that I had never seen before. I stopped by today to check out the buy two get one free sale (of equal or lesser value), so I grabbed 3 20$ games, and 3 5$ dollar games assuming I would get one $20 dollar game and a one $5 dollar game free. At checkout the guy (skinny dude, big black beard, dangly earring) tells me that I only get two of the five dollar games. I pointed out that, as per the sign, its buy 2 get 1 (not buy 4 get 2), and he literally tells me "well that would be better for you" (Yeah I'm not an idiot). I make the point that I could just make two transactions and he gives me a sarcastic "thanks for supporting local businesses," like this is some little scam I'm running, and at that point I just said "you know what? have a nice day" and walked out. And here I am thinking I was supporting a local business. Moving the pieces around to charge me $25 for a $10 purchase isn't even what really bothered me, it's the wildly rude customer service and the insinuation that I'm the one trying to rip them off. Beyond the bad customer service, I would suggest Game Over change their deceptive advertising as my assumption of Buy 2 Get 1 seemed pretty reasonable, that's generally how the process works, and that's what their sign said. The way they are doing this, the more you buy the less you actually save during their sale. I've enjoyed shopping at Game Over in the past (the rest of the staff is cool), but I won't be going back after being insulted for "misunderstanding" their deceptive policy. I recently restored my old NES system and decided to go in search of some games. I called Gamestop and they informed me that the best option is Game Over Games...so I loaded up some PS3 Games hoping to do a trade and headed down to the South Lamar location. This store is AWESOME!! It has every kind of console, accessory, game you can think of and if they don't have it, they will find it for you. The staff was awesome as well...I had a chance to work with a younger associate, John and a manager Davi (spelling?). Both were outstanding and having been a Retail District Manager for many years, I was truly impressed with Davi's management style and his ability to create a strong customer service atmosphere. It didn't take long until I found a nice stack of NES 8-bit games and was on my way...goodbye PS3 games and hello to the good old days!! I will be recommending this location to all my friends and look forward to returning again soon. read more

The shop is lined with seemingly endless rows of gray plastic and colorful boxes of consoles old and kinda old. Its a great atmosphere and they have plenty of inventory. I could probably zone out in there for days. Davide was really helpful and knowledgeable about pretty much everything I could throw at him, with a few laughs too! Next day, we show up for a refund and his co-worker says the store policy is no refunds! WTF? He lied to me or, he said it in such a way that led me to believe I would get my money back. Worst service possible followed by deceptive meanness. Cash register employee rang up a video game among many in the stack we purchased today. When it turned out to be more expensive than my 11 year old thought it was, "no refund" was the answer. I get that if the game left the store the policy makes sense - but neither the child nor the game left the counter. We have bought a Nintendo 64, SNES, a Pokemon Pikachu edition GameBoy, & serveral video games & I have to tell you I'm am very satisfied with pricing. Most people expect waay lower value of these systems and games, but I personally think your getting them for a steal. The staff there is AWESOME. They're very helpful and very knowledgeable about everything. Now I don't normally write reviews for stores, but I felt today deemed an exception! I come to Game Over Video Games today in order to escape the Prototypsoldatens of Gamestop! Low and behold I managed to find a great spot! The store is clean and a bit cluttered, bit it was the employees that sold me on the experience! As soon as I walked in I was welcomed and both associates asked if I had any questions. They took care of all my questions and my weird conversations. Granted one employee totally didn't want to be there at all it seemed lol, but he was extremely knowledgeable, knew what he was doing, and extremely pleasant to me(even thought I'm sure he was forcing it). It was entertaining since this Asian dude totally seemed like some PC master race and stuck out. Well 10/10 and will be doing business in the future! I am a fan of Game Over. They have several stores around Austin and they also represent themselves at the Anime Conventions around the surrounding areas! You walk in and you automatically feel like a little school girl in a hello kitty shop. You want to squeal you head off! They have a large selection of games for a lot of the consoles that have been made through the last decades. There is something for everyone in there. The staff has always been great to me and very witty and sarcastic! I not only get to find my games but get some laughs during my shopping experience. They've been great in helping me find new games to try and have not steered me wrong yet. Yes some of the prices can be a little higher for some of the game titles than going to Ebay or Amazon but the idea that I can test out the game as well as see the condition of the items, I am willing to spend the extra to know I have a good products. Honestly, its spend the extra 10 bucks to know what I am getting or just wonder if my product is going to be as shown in the pictures. Overall my experience has been great. Staff is friendly. Prices not to bad but reasonable. If your looking for older games, stop by for sure! They have several shops in Austin and a wide selection. read more

My boyfriend and I were very excited to see the wide-range they had of everything retro gaming but it didn't last long till one of the employees "helped" us, but my boyfriend and I got the same vibe of just being talked down too. I almost had an unnecessary argument about a gaming system just because of the employees tone so I simply started ignoring him. He then kept giving an unneeded tone to my boyfriend when he asked another question. Great place. Of course this is probably mostly my nostalgia talking. Putting on my consumer hat, let me see: The staff is very friendly and knowledgable, although I've mostly talked to just Randle. "She's the nice one!" I bought an SNES controller that didn't work quite right and Randle took the time right before closing to clean it for me so that it works as good as new. I also made a minor faux pas in buying a game I already owned. I took it back in and explained my dementia, and they allowed me to exchange it. Don't make this same mistake, kids! Of course, I'm getting old, so that's probably not a problem for you. Although, if you're shopping at Game Over, you're probably getting old too. Hate to break it to ya. Well done GO.
