I really like this place! Cute little dive bar with, yes, a "hipster" feel. But who doesn't like hip, chill places with arcade games, a private alleyway with outdoor seating, unique beers on tap, and GGBF (ok. just made that up: GREASY GOOD BAR FOOD)?! Cool spot to consider if you are catching up with a friend. The atmosphere is really cute and there's lights strung up. The music was great the night I went; mix of indie rock and electronic. It's a very laid-back place; when I looked around me, many others were with just one other person as well. It is evident that Galaxy Hut a good place to converse (and not have to scream to hear each other). Especially when the weather is nice! We sat outside for a good hour or so just talking, drinking, and munching on their bar bites. I'm bummed because we came a little before 12am, so they couldn't make us the fattening chili cheese dog I was so desperately craving. But they did fry up some eggplant fries and tots for us. Eggplant fries could use more flavor, and tots were good with ketchup. The "regular" sizes are huge! I ordered a unique cider they had on the menu, and would love to come back to try other drinks. I have a soft spot for this place, my favorite neighborhood bar. Excellent beers on tap with an easy-going atmosphere. I love their nod to the local scene with all the DC art and playful comics on the wall. The bar is a bit on the quiet side on regular nights - you won't go in expecting to jabber on with your neighbor, but you will always leave content and happy. Perhaps it's the twinkling string lights, the cozy booths or the pacman arcade game waiting to be beat. Or all of the above. The bartenders are great and really know their beers. They also serve tater tots, fried eggplant, grilled cheese sandwiches and a bunch of vegan/veg options. It would be awesome if they had better HH deals though (docking a millimeter on the last star for that). then it wouldnt hurt the wallet as much! On some Sundays they have small, local bands play - it gets a bit cramped + loud, but I love it. You'll feel like family here. And every 1st Sunday of the month is karaoke night! Hipster oasis or hipster mirage? I'm not totally certain. Considering the hipster population has declined in the DC area, I think I'd describe this as a dive bar with a strong concentration of hipsterdom for Arlington. The place is dimly lit with string lights and covered in funky artwork and retro video game machines. Good selection of beers on tap. Good happy hour from 5-7 if you want a cheap pitcher. *Great* bar food, especially the vegan selections. A vegan friend and I recently had the tater tots with vegan chili and a vegan chicken bacon cheese sandwich, both of which were delicious; the sandwich in particular had great texture and flavor, and I'd order it again, even though I don't keep a vegan diet. I'm less thrilled that the music is generally a bit too loud and I always somehow sit at the table where the video game machine is broken, which is nice for ambience but would be more fun if it worked. Also the main room is sort of cramped and you might need sharp eyes to find an open spot during busy times. Oh, and remember to order drinks and food at the bar under the big sign. I've been craving to eat a meatball sub for a few years now, but I try not to eat red meat since I used to be a vegetarian and want to limit my meat intake overall. Hole in the wall dive bar of Clarendon being a short walk from either Clarendon or Courthouse metro and loads of street parking. This place is ideal for a small happy hour or you can just come for the good beer, totchos (loaded tots), and grilled cheese sandwiches. Reminds me a small dive bar There aren't many deals on wine, but their beer is great. They have a vast menu and had humongous pitchers of beer for only about $20. And when you order a pitcher, you get half off Tots! Their menu is almost ideal for vegetarians with at least 70% of the menu with a vegetarian substitute. The Granny Smith, yummy weird combination of cheese and apples, but I liked the tangy-ness from the apple. The Buffalo things were fire! Since moving to this side of Arlington, I've been passing Galaxy Hut for years now and have never actually ventured in. Finally on a cold Saturday evening, I got someone to come with me and venture into the "hispter" bar that is Galaxy Hut. First impressions is this is definitely a dive bar that's a bit small. Not a spot you stop at with a big party but definitely a good spot for a few drinks and an app. We decided to sit at the bar to get the speediest service, as normally if you are sitting at a table you have to stand in line at the bar to get yourself a beer. I can only imagine how packed this place is when a band plays because the area is already fairly small. Water is self serve which is nice, and they have old school VHS playing- we got to watch some of the Mask. I was worried coming in they would only have IPA beers but they had a wide variety of everything, from canned beers, coffee like beers, ciders, and even wine. I really like the concept of different beer sizes, from mini even up to pitcher for some beer varieties. We had about 3 beers each and we barely spent any money, something hard to do in the Arlington area. I also decided on getting the Totchos with bacon and jalapenos and it was one of the best things I've tasted in a while. Galaxy Hut is a fantastic venue for a chill night of hanging out with friends - definitely less chaotic than some of the other bars in Clarendon (Don Tito's, Clarendon Ballroom, Spider Kelly's etc) but I think that's a plus in their favor. The bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly and if they don't know something, they'll let you try a sample or two to help you decide. They do lean more towards beers rather than cocktails or wine but that's not something I mind at all. What a dive bar it is, but it has some charm. I would not go back if it weren't an evening some weekend where I am out in Arlington and starving and nothing else is open. It's not that there's not good beer and decent bar food, it's just not my scene. As well it should be, the beverage menu is far more extensive than the drink menu. The drinks are self/explanatory. The food is almost a la carte, so if you order say nachos or tot-chos or salad, you have to specify everything that you want. The homemade salsa is quite tasty, more like pico de gallo. The junk food goodness hits the spot for bar food! They have a bunch of tables in a mood-lit or rather unlit atmosphere- perfect for a bar. There's a patio too, if the weather is nice. Play a game or two while you're at Galaxy Hut, and have another cold one. The atmosphere is relaxing and the service is accommodating. No one's rushing around here, adding to a nice laid back atmosphere. Plenty of food too, to keep you fueled up- really though, just get nachos or tot-chos! Galaxy Hut is a place that I've always wondered about. Whenever I walk home from work going down Wilson Boulevard, I always pass it. And it's always packed with people are seemingly getting their drink on. Finally got a chance to pay a visit on a Saturday night. My friends and I figured we would grab a little food and beverages before heading to a Christmas party. We were pumped to hear there was a sort of happy hour going from 5pm-7pm with a $10 and $13 pitcher of pilsner. That drew us in pretty quickly. Let me just say, if you ARE IN A HURRY, you might want to wait to come to Galaxy Hut when you can relax and enjoy the scene. It's not a huge place, but it can get pretty crowded. Everyone orders everything at the bar as well, so there are no servers to come around and take orders. This makes the process a little slower, but more homey, too. After ordering, you get the beer immediately but the food takes a little bit to prepare. The menu is pretty varied. There's vegan options, beef options, sandwiches and things you wouldn't normally see on menus (pork rangoons). All the food was pretty good and the entire group enjoyed themselves. This place is sooo hipster. "How hipster is it?" It's so hipster that, during my last visit: 1. They were playing tracks from Radiohead's KidA 2. I saw a girl in her mid-20's wearing a Joy Division t-shirt. 3. At least a half-dozen ex-frat types came to the bar and asked "Uh, what's the best IPA that you have" 4. A tall Daniel Bryan clone, complete with goat face beard, ordered a vegan cheesesteak and tots with vegan cheese. So what the hell am I doing in a place like this? For starters, they have a strong on-tap selection. Yes, it shades a bit hipster - meaning it's dominated by IPAs with a few heavy stouts and Belgian-style beers mixed in. Truthfully, you're likely to find something more unique and hard-to-find on tap at the Arlington Pub above the Whole Foods across the street. But they do keep Left Hand Sawtooth on Nitro, and that makes me VERY happy. Still, if I were rating it for beer selection only, I'd only be giving it four stars. The extra star comes from the food. Don't let all the vegan talk fool you ... they have food for normal people too. They have a great menu of casual bar food, including a number of specialty grilled cheese sandwiches. (Their sister restaurant, Spacebar in Falls Church, has a more extensive grilled cheese menu) I am typically weary of these specialty grilled cheese sandwiches, because they basically just turn out to be a panini. The cheese doesn't ooze like it should on a grilled cheese. But not at The Hut. Oh no. Their meatloaf grilled cheese oozes out of the sandwich like a grilled cheese should. I loved it so much the first time I was there that I ordered it again on my second visit, excpet I switched mozzarella with fresh mozzarella. ZOMG this might be the best thing I've ever put into my mouth. With a side of eggplant fries, I'd be 100% happy having this as my last meal on Earth. Galaxy Hut strides that fine line between divey and hipster perfectly, and offers a friendly inviting atmosphere, a strong on-tap selection, and a meatloaf grilled cheese that is to die for. As a longtime resident of Northern Virginia, I was schooled in the Fairfax County Public School system. One of my favorite memories from this delicate period of my life was Tater Tot days. Thank God I lived in the days before Jamie Oliver, where eating a tater tot was considered fulfillment of consuming from the fruits and vegetable food group! Fast forward twenty years, and I find myself at Galaxy Hut eating my favorite childhood snack. Only this time, instead of sipping on milk in a recyclable plastic pouch, I'm drinking a wonderfully hoppy craft brew in a goblet. I can't help but hum the first few lines of Notorious BIG's "Juicy" whenever I am here.... Can you see why this place is so loved by Arlington residents? My vegan friend and I came here in search of vegan food, why is it so hard to find vegan food in Nova?? We finally found it in the form of a dive bar. This place is small and has seating in the inside and seating along the alley way in the side of the building and wrapping around the back. We glanced at the menu and asked the guy working the bar what is vegan and he said that anything on the menu can be made vegan. Great! So first off we try to order the Macaroni n' Cheese and he tells us that it's not vegan...what? I thought everything can be made vegan. So we order the Nachos, Patty Melt, and eggplant fries. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our belly. The Nachos come loaded and is more than enough for two people. They taste pretty well and the cheese on top tastes like real cheese. The patty melt was my favorite, one bite and I forgot I was eating a vegan patty melt. The eggplant fries were flavorless and soggy but they do give you a small dip (vegan version of ranch?) LIke Ol' Yella's review, I don't live anywhere near this hole in the wall drinking nook nor do I have any friends that frequent here. In fact, even though it's on Wilson Blvd., it's easy to drive by and miss it. I walk-in and begin looking around for my lyrical maestros...but not before taking a pit stop to the bathroom and bar (in that order respectively). There is only one bathroom for women, so I await patiently for a bit and look who pops out - the notorious Tina R. who shot me a huge smile and a polite "excuse me!" How delightful...is that really her? In this moment however, my concerns are redirected back to my bladder. I handle my business, and then head to the bar. I order a jack and coke...but turns out I didn't get the memo that only beer and wine are served here. Minus 3 cool points for me. So I order a lager on tap at the dimly lit bar and walk outside to see where my Yelpers were in the hizoouuuse! As I'm headed outside, I take it all of the awesome, quirky, cartoon art on the walls. Love it! So I head outside and find all my fellow Yelpers in this tin, hut looking structure where all the Yelpers are tucked away cozily. We all sat around the table in this aluminum hut and kicked it for a lil while we brainstormed all kinds of awesome ideas. This "dive like establishment" located in the heart of Clarendon is the only redeeming factor of this neighborhood. That is, it's the only reason I ever venture out of the District and into Arlington to drink/socialize. Last night I went there for the second time after a performance at the Artisphere near Rosslyn. Luckily I had friends with a car or I wouldn't have wasted the energy. It wasn't as busy as the last time I was there and we were able to get a seat at the bar. Don't fall for the cool booths with the Pac-man games - if you sit at a table you have to go WAIT in a LINE to get your beer from the ONE bartender. Like a bunch of frat kids waiting in line for the keg. HOWEVER if you sit at the bar you get bar service. They serve only beer (no liquor) and self-serve water, oh and food - people are Tot-Crazy here, and they taste just like Ore-Irda (no one beats ChurchKey's homemade tots), but, are a fun treat late at night. They also have this hot dog - the only time I'll EVER eat a hot dog outside of a baseball game - it's split in half on a grilled bun with cheese and bacon on it. Lord it's delicious, and *very* healthy. The beer selection is good and if you sit at the bar you can usually get a sample. This place gets VERY packed with the "hipsters of Arlington" on the weekends and people get a little to close for comfort, but, most of them are generally friendly and it seems to be the only tolerable place to check out slightly attractive people - primarily if you're into guys with beards, in the neighborhood. read more

Um...Yeah...I kinda love everything about this place. A LOT.The variety of beer (the pumpkin beer is de-LISH!), the art, the old school games (Pac Man, anyone?!), the sweet outdoor seating, and the location. PERFECT. They have this pretty sweet giant covered sitting area out back where you sit in what reminds me of an alien space ship created by a 5 year old. Just check it out - it's just a lamp and a table under this thing. They also have uncovered tables out back as well and they turn on the string lights which makes for a very pretty atmosphere in the evening. If you haven't been: Go! I thought Galaxy Hut was laid back and was a nice escape in the evening from every other place around it which was swarming with people. Last time I went here two years ago I wasn't overly impressed, but I noticed recently they updated their menu and got a new vegan cashew cheese so I had to try it. The online ordering system is straightforward and in store pickup was a breeze. The door is propped open so you don't have to go inside. Staff just brings your food over and they are following mask protocol. I got the fricken sandwich and totchos with jalapenos. Both were incredible! The fried "chicken" had amazing, slightly spicy breading that was complimented by the cole slaw and vegan ranch. And the sandwich was massive! The totchos came with a few fried jalapenos on top in addition to the raw ones mixed in, and was a generous portion. Those fried jalapenos would make a great menu item all by themselves with a creamy sauce. read more

Between the Courthouse and Ballston stops on the Orange Line, lies this hidden gem. Located on a block that includes: a whole foods, bicycle shop, kebab place, gelato place, and a farmer's market...this area is no doubt a holy site for the local white people of the area. This place instantly reminded me of my favorite bar in my current city of Spokane, Washington ("The Baby Bar"). Atmosphere is incredibly laid back, with a great crowd. Lots of mid-twenty to early-thirty types. The extreme yuppies and raging, cackling queens present at other DC-area bars seem to be absent here, which I appreciated. I suck at making friends, and I actually made a good one here! (was in town on business for a week). Amazing beer on tap, including Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron which the bar tender was VERY excited about...I wasn't sure if she was going to be OK or not for a second. (but seriously what's with almost every bar in the DC area dedicating half their tap handles to Belgians? Give me more microbrews please!) But, the vegan options were awesome we had the tot basket, vegan cheesesteak, and vegan corn dogs and they were all so good! They also have great happy hour specials everyday 5-7. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. My friend has gone there regularly for a few years. So following their recommendation, we went out for a late dinner. The brussel sprouts were cold and had about 5 or 6 actual sprouts. The rest of the large bowl was filled with burnt, spare leaves covered in balsamic vinaigrette to mask how burnt it was. It was obviously the very bottom of a large batch. This was after an extremely unprofessional encounter with a bartender named Ali as well. There was no incentive to come back beyond a half-assed apology from him where he kept trying to justify his actions and make excuses. The MOD had to apologize on his behalf. The staff needs training, there needs to be soap in the bathrooms, and the food was subpar. I hope that the restaurant does better in the future so that no one else experiences the night I had. read more

This place is great. My type of scene where you can sit and talk have a nice drink with your group. They have a cute outdoor nook on the side which is great to sit at when it's nice outside. You can order tator tots, Eggplant fries (absolutely delicious)/along with their sizable array of beers. I'm a dark beer person and they had a great section devoted to my type of beer. You can get drinks in regular size, goblet, and mini, which is fantastic if you want to try a wide variety without breaking your wallet or your seal. The beer selection is incredible -- so many different kinds of ales, pilsners and ciders from different parts of the country. I love that they have sizes -- you can get a mini, goblet, pint and pitcher for pretty much every drink. This makes going out both less wasteful and more budget friendly! It's probably a good sign that reviews for this bar seem to be split between complaints that it's too hipstersesque and not sufficiently hip. I find the atmosphere to be pleasant, and the people to be cool but not pretentious. They've got a great beer list, and a substantial all-vegetarian menu (and everything can be made vegan as a bonus). The tater tots are excellent, and while the menu is basically veg versions of normal bar food, the execution is solid nonetheless.
