Pleasantly surprised! Their happy hour food was all very satisfying and decently priced as well. The duck confit was not on HH and it was enjoyable but not my thing, esp for 20 bucks. The escargot was delicious but I mean how do you go wrong with that much butter haha. Burger was very hefty and filling while frites were nice and crispy! Service was.... kinda weird but nothing went wrong I guess. Waitress didn't know what a red ale was (one on their list), the beer I got had a different ABV content than listed, burger was not medium rare. Food was very good (once they got my order right.) But drink choices not so great if you want something non-alcoholic and lower on the sugar content. No Perrier?! You are a French restaurant. No non-alcoholic beer?! Yes you have mock-tails but those are high in sugar which is one of the reasons I drink Perrier or non-alcoholic beer. They did have Diet Coke but who wants caffeine late in the day. Probably will go back for the food but will bring my own drink. read more

This was my first time trying their French onion soup, and it was way too salty for me. I only finished half the bowl before giving up. Since I have hypertension, I checked my blood pressure when I got home to see if the salt had affected me. Lo and behold, it registered at 204/128, which was shocking. My wife wanted to call 911, but I told her to wait, hoping it might come down on its own. After drinking half a liter of water and resting for a couple of hours, my blood pressure dropped to 143/95. Friday night happy hour--it's their specialty, right? Didn't seem like it to us. Service slower than a glacier, and obviously understaffed. DID I MENTION THAT IT WAS LOUD? How loud was it? Well, We were sitting opposite the bar, and the NIOSH sound level app on my phone wavered between 87 and 90 db. Two of our party of 7 made requests that the music be turned down slightly, but to no avail. The one bearded bartender made a remark about our request, but I'm not sure what he said because IT WAS SO LOUD. We were made to feel unwelcome at a neighborhood bar, of all places. Geez. I wonder how long it'll be before others realize Gainsbourg isn't as hip as it has been made out to be? Awesome little French bar/restaurant in Greenwood. I've had the Chateau Rignol Bordeaux (red), escargots, steak frites, and duck confit. All were quite tasty and prices are very reasonable. Service is friendly with a cool neighborhood vibe. read more

I've been there several times in the past 6 months, in a group of 2 or 3 with minimal or no wait time. Prices are very reasonable for Seattle. It can be busy but the service has always been good. We've been coming to Gainsbourg for years! It's a fun spot that always feels a little rowdy in a good way. If you like Serge Gainsbourg and the French New Wave movement, you'll feel at home here. On the menu there are STRONG, affordable cocktails ($6-$12) and also wine by the glass. My fiancé got the Ye Ye Girl and I got the Guy-Blache for our first round, and then we both got the Lemon Incest for our second round. The frites are delicious and my partner always gets them. They are similar to shoestring fries like the kind you get at Dick's, and they come with aioli and ketchup. I got the French onion soup on a recent visit and it was good, but very salty! I would have preferred a little less salt but it might be just fine for some. Server was great about checking our vaccination cards. They were out of a number of things but that's probably due to supply chain issues. Go give them a try! read more

Color me a fan after one long overdue visit! We sat outdoors on their dog friendly patio, but I do love the French Twin Peaks vibes inside as well. Our server was friendly and gave honest recommendations. The drinks here are A+. All their cocktails sound so interesting, and the Lamorrisse (all I remember is gin and wormwood bitters) was exactly what I was in the mood for this night. To eat, my friend and I shared the decadent macaronis et fromage (penne, gruyere, brie, roasted garlic and thyme), the Brussels sprouts (pan roasted with caramelized onion and Dijon vinaigrette; ordered sans bacon), and a lovely and fresh little salad. I learned of this amazing place on Eater Seattle. We made our first visit last Saturday to find the busiest bistro I've seen apart from Les Halles in NYC (R.I.P.) We lost hope and gave up almost immediately. But last night we tried again and got seats on the bar, right in front of the stove. It was WELL worth the second attempt! This place and its staff are the real deal, and it was like a symphony watching two chefs cook proper food using proper procedures. First-class cooking made for a very fine dinner, exactly as it should be. It's a lively and delectable spot to visit--and often. It will not be slow and quiet. That's for the overpriced portions downtown. Intimate conversation is not possible, nor should it be. But for a downright delicious plate of the real stuff, it's a solid choice that we'd recommend highly. read more

It's been awhile since we have had a chance to eat / drink here but I am very pleased to report that it's still a great place. And yes the parking is still challenging but it's worth the trouble. My French granddaughters - snotty Parisian kids, really love the food and endorse the French vib. So yes,leans French and the pleased to see the happy hour standards still on the menu - the burger with the beet salad always works for me. We missed happy hour this trip but who doesn't love a perfect medium-rare steak frite and (of course) onion soup Plus much more- the specials are a good place to check when ordering. So sure the food is great but the killer bar and the neighborhood ambiance makes this my happy place. When we lived in the 'hood' this was a regular stop- delighted to drop back in. And, it's an either you get it or you don't. Kind of dive bar chic or just standard cafe French if not in the fancier parts of Paris. read more

I love this place! It's a total hole in the wall, neighborhood joint, and I adore it for it. Some of the best French onion soup ever. Actually, I've never eaten anything here that I didn't love. Their mac & cheese is unbelievable. The floors are slanted, the decor is saucy and it's a titch on the dark side. And I mean all of those things in the best way! Really nothing pretentious about it. Went in and checked out for a light late night bite and a beverage with a few people. Staff were ok but not super friendly. Food was expensive for what it was (small bowl of macaroni around $16 with oil and cheese and a hand sized side salad) French food heavy. Smelled a little funky like old cheese and grill smoke. Tried it one time. $85 bill for 3 of us each had an appetizer and a drink with one soda. Could do better in the area. read more

I've been here twice now and have gotten the steak frites both times because it's just that damn good. It's the most expensive item on the menu, and at $24 it's a steal considering the pan sauce and the seasoned fries checks all the umami boxes so well, both times I nearly ordered seconds. This most recent time I went with friends for happy hour and got olives and the beet salad as well, both of which were fantastic and a great deal for happy hour. The cocktails are on point as well. One friend and I shared the crème brûlée for dessert; it was a pretty small portion for two, so I recommend not sharing on this one. Gainsbourg has a quirky boho-french decor that's unpretentious and super cozy. Definitely recommend for small groups, date nights or even solo trips (like my first visit). Everything here is so good and priced right. I've tried a majority of food and drinks on the menu and everything is great. My favorite is the poutine - it's very unique in a good way. I also like the chocolate mousse if I want something sweet. They also have rotating specials which are always a delight to try. I love all the staff. We always have great conversations. The service is usually pretty quick - it's only been slow when the bar is literally packed to the brim with people. Great ambiance as well - every table has lit candles and they play old movies on the wall. Gainsbourg is one of my go to spots and it is frequently the first place I highlight when asked for bar recommendations in the area. read more

We were looking for some French bistro on a rainy fall night to console a bitter Apple Cup loss. Off we went to Gainsbourg and all was made well tout suite. First of all, the staff are very friendly and handle the packed space efficiently. The restaurant is warm and fun, an Americanized version of a Paris bistro. Some disco music, some red lights and some candlesticks. The food really shines brightest here, though. From the perfectly balanced French onion soup to the fresh seasonal salad to the pan roasted meats and fowl. Did I mention took Gainsbourg has the absolute best frites anywhere? Seriously, I think they must lace them with something illicit...and I don't care. Loved everything about this spot and look forward to coming back soon. read more

In all honesty, a 1 star is being generous to this establishment for this deserves a negative zero star. I wish that I could say my first visit could take away the experience I had, but I can't even give Gainsbourg credit for that. My experience yesterday evening was nothing but pure disgust and a night that would have been a great one. To start, we arrived at around 8PM not knowing there would be quite the crowd. We were told to sit anywhere for each table was communal. As we waited for our table, we noticed a vacant booth open up and as I walked towards our table our server, Ashley, beat me to the table, looked at me in a rude way and told me, "can I least clean this table first?" (??) -- as if we were going to willingly sit at a dirty table to begin with. At this moment, this is where I knew that the night was starting off rough. When we finally got situated, it took forever and a year for Ashley to take our order, REFILL our bottle of water (in which she never actually did/offer to) or even look our direction. ----@Ashley, we had to speak to other servers that were actually busy working taking care of their table just to grab your attention. FYI if we looked like we kept breaking our necks looking for you to come to our table let alone breathe or an eyeball look our way, it was because WE needed something from YOU not because we enjoy playing hide and seek with you at your workplace during our dinner. As the night went on, we observed and saw you @Ashley serve your other table(s) with the UTMOST excitement on your face, happy and grinning. But did you have to completely disregard the booth we were at? @Ashley, is it because we were the only minorities in the restaurant and you felt the need to disregard us? Did we intimidate you? Disrespect you? I can guarantee you that the entire time we were nothing BUT polite to you despite the fact that you treated us like trash. Of the 2 hours we were there, the fastest service we had from you was when you wanted our money. I believe it took you less than a minute to walk to us, walk back to the register to run our transaction and give it back -- for I know our table was an area you would love to have ignored all night if given the chance to. I would just like to reiterate to you @Ashely and management that your service needs some drastic changes. @Ashley, you made this experience so horrible that we even left this place confused thinking we did something wrong, when in retrospect you single handedly AVOIDED us for the 2 hours we sat there trying to make the best of the 0/10 service YOU gave us. And not to mention, I noticed the eye roll you gave me when I made my 75th attempt to grab your attention that you.... wait for it.... again IGNORED. Oh and @Ashley, next time you should learn to smile at other human beings that don't look like you because maybe the word diversity, inclusion, kindness or any of the "isms" aren't in your vocabulary. If you aren't aware of how you treat others, the ones surrounding you can. Lastly, do not throw dessert/fork and spoons on the table, instead, set it down gently-- just a tip for the future customers you serve so they don't experience what we went through. To say we were disappointed is an understatement - party of two walked in around 7pm last night, and took two seats at the bar. The restaurant was full, but not packed, and there were tables available. It took 10 minutes before the bartender greeted us with water and menus. I immediately placed an order for a cocktail special, which happened to be posted on the wall behind the bar and sounded appealing (it was called "B Positive"). The cocktail came out rather quickly, about 5 minutes later, and the bartender said he would be back to take our order. That was the moment where we should have closed our tab because at that point, we received no follow-up from the time we flagged the bartender down for our check 30 minutes later. At the moment when the cocktail was delivered, we told the bartender we would like to move to a booth, seeing one available. He said no problem, and we imagined that meant he would be over to serve us shortly in the booth. We waited a full 30 minutes, watching both the bartender and two servers make laps around the restaurant, with no acknowledgment of us. We overheard them apologizing to other patrons for the delay in service to their tables. After picking our entire meal and salivating over the menu, as well as both using the bathroom, we decided to flag the bartender who was ignoring us down and ask for the check. We were so excited to find an authentic French restaurant in a cozy neighborhood. This experience left such a sour taste in our mouths to the point it threatened to ruin our entire evening, but frankly, the lack of hospitality at this place is so uninspiring that it's not even worth a second thought. read more

We came here for a night cap after going to a show downtown..... Firstly i've been here a total of 3 times in the past couple months because i live here in greenwood, so i thought that maybe it's just the night or maybe just the staff currently working on a particular night. Nope. The bartenders are just downright unqualified for the position, their service is horrendous. They act put off when it's time to serve a beverage or take an order. It's like guys... be more humble you work at bar in greenwood.... Takes 20 minutes for them to make a drink when no tickets are in queue. They drink themselves uncontrollably behind the bar which is so unprofessional not to mention the owner can't be okay with them drinking all his/her product. It's shameless really. I've been in the industry 12 years and if those guys (one with glasses and facial fair, the other tall with longer hair) Id be extremely embarrassed to have them be the face and first impression of my business. I hope this reaches who needs to see because the 4 of us walked out of there never to return, honestly we're very easy going and don't expected a lot but that was downright offensive. A Greenwood gem. Nice atmosphere. Interesting menu.

Great unpretentious ambiance, eccentric neighborhood bar (I mean a bar themed around a very specific french singer/artist from the 60s/70s whaaaat), it's now our regular hangout, and all are friends end up being regulars themselves. Friendly knowledgeable staff, how very un-Parisian of them! Pretty good bistro-style-and-quality food (gainsbourger + kronenbourg is my combo, other items on the menu are good, I never ventured far enough to try the duck), and a 1960s France inspired cocktail menu, or at least the names of the drinks and that sparks conversations. Go there for a date, or with a small group of friends, or with a buddy for a seat at the bar, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy the silent black and white movies playing in the corner. read more
