Love this historic cafe from 1904. We enjoyed the Sunday breakfast. I stuck with a country breakfast which came with biscuits and gravy, two eggs, hash brown, and two large slices of bacon. I've been to Hattie's Hat a handful of times now, and I honestly keep ordering the same thing: the adult grilled cheese. It's just really good, no notes, and I don't feel the need to branch out when it hits every time. Parking in the back has always been pretty simple for me, which is a plus in this area. Came here just as a rest stop before my college best friend, Chooksedo Sam, and I were going to Ballard Kayak for about two hours. It was a good time! Cozy feel with unique decorations that reminded me of a college dorm in the best way possible. Definitely cleaner than one! We popped in here during the farmers market because it was rainy outside and this spot was somewhere we wanted to check out anyway. Pleasantly surprised to get a table right away and got a big booth, which is always nice. Love the vibe and decor inside, and love that they have the patio structure out front. It took awhile for a server to come over after we sat down but once we started getting service, food came out quickly. I love that they have the early bird breakfast so that I can get a smaller portion of the basic breakfast items. Would definitely come back again and happy hour looks good. read more

We've been to Hattie's Hat a couple of times, usually hitting it just before going to a gig at the Tractor Tavern (it's just a few doors down). Decent food, great service, very good bar selection. Ample places to sit, both indoor and out, with plenty of stools at the bar as well. Service is fast! We had our orders taken shortly after arriving, and the food arrived quickly after that. Food quality is decent, higher end bar fare. I ordered the Chicken Quesadilla, which was quite good. My girlfriend ordered the Voodoo Burger, with a vegetarian patty. She enjoyed it, but found the bottom bun a little soggy, which dampened the quality a bit. Wrt drinks, I ordered the Offset Dry Cider, and she a Tanqueray and Soda. Both were good. read more

We came around noon on a Sunday before walking the Ballard Farmers Market, and they were busy but got us seated pretty quickly. The ambiance is fun and casual with funky decor throughout, however the inside walking areas and bathrooms are all pretty narrow so people using mobility aids may have difficulty navigating the interior seating options. They did have covered and heated outside tables today, so that may be an option other days of the week too. The staff are kept super busy so the service is on the slower side, but the food is tasty and they also had The Nightmare Before Christmas playing on a big screen tv and projector which helped the time to pass festively. My first visit to Hattie's Hat was during a summer bike ride. My husband and I decided to go on a long ride to get breakfast in the Ballard/Fremont area. Hattie's Hat is easy access from the Burke Gilman trail, even bike parking a few steps away. I ordered the basic breakfast (hashbrowns, eggs and toast). My husband ordered a breakfast biscuit sandwich. They also have a full bar; serving mimosas, beer, bloody Mary's, etc! We saved ourselves for beer on the way home so we passed on the libations. I have been at least 10 times since the first visit. It is my favorite breakfast spot in Seattle!! My favorite breakfast is the chicken fried chicken. It comes with toast or English muffin, but I always request a biscuit (bc hello there's gravy!) It never disappoints! Hearty, rib sticking, homemade goodness!!! The hashbrowns are my favorite type! Came for the happy hour! And it was tasty! My friend and I came here to see what the buzz was about and happy hour was the perfect time to go! We tried the bbq rib, wings, and quesadilla. my experience didn't quite live up to expectations... The Chicken Fried Chicken was too thin, making it a bit dry. It lacked the juiciness and texture I was hoping for, though the gravy was the best part--definitely the standout sauce of the day. It helped salvage the dish and was by far the most flavorful part of the meal. To top it off, I had ordered my eggs over medium, but they came out over easy. The Eggs Benedict had a lot of potential, but they didn't give us the chicken sausage we asked for, and instead we got chicken fried chicken. I'll say the chicken paired nicely with the benedict and I'm glad we ended up with this. A few parts of it came out cold. The Aunt Harriet's Country Breakfast was also lukewarm, and while the sausage gravy was good, it didn't definitely wasn't as good as the Country Gravy from the chicken fried chicken plate. We were seated outside because they said there was no room inside, but when the table behind us arrived, they were seated indoors. It felt a little odd, especially since the outdoor heaters didn't do much to keep us warm. Eating outside in the cold wasn't the best experience. On a positive note, the raspberry jam on the table was delicious and definitely a highlight. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to save the meal. Overall, it was a pretty average experience. Hattie's Hat is quirky and comforting-- I always get the Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict and the Pickle Mary, but all of their food looks like a hybrid of southern food and a quirky diner. I love that they do all day breakfast, and I often work from there after the lunch rush is over. The staff never rushes me, the decor is delightfully whimsical, and it's one of the few places in Seattle where I feel comfortable solo dining. Bloody Mary's are recommended and are adorned by pickled okra among other delights. I've only been for brunch which is a pretty meat-centric menu, but there are a couple vegetarian/vegan items. I'm a fan of the Hippie Scramble with hashbrowns and a biscuit. If you come on Sunday they have a Farmers Market scramble made with a selection of fresh veg from the market. I've been to Hattie's many times. It's consistent, I'll give it that. They provide slightly overpriced, predictably decent diner food and drinks with a dive-y Northwest flare and atmosphere. Today I ordered a Pickle Bloody Mary and the Aunt Harriet's Country Breakfast. It was fine. The biscuit was mediocre at best (I've had biscuits from the Pillsbury cans that were better). The hashbrowns were adequate but poorly seasoned and a bit on the soggy side (maybe it's a matter of preference, but I think hashbrowns should be crisp). My husband ordered a scramble. We each had our meals, a cocktail each, and a coffee. We spent almost $90 on this meal. That seems pretty steep for a dive bar diner... On a separate occasion my girlfriend tried to order a BLT at 11 AM (brunch, almost lunch). And the waitress refused to serve her one before noon. However, she was able to order the bacon breakfast sandwich with the eggs on the side and add a tomato and a piece of lettuce. [If you're not tracking, that is a BLT...]. What the hell Hattie's? How can you be so pedantic? If you're looking for a Ballard diner, I highly recommend Salmon Bay. Better menu. Much better value! read more

The tots here at won point. The right amount of crispy and flavor without being too salty or squishy or crunchy. The adult grilled cheese is also huge and tasty. I ordered a single French toast and it came out as three? Either way that was pretty good too and I took a bunch of it home because the portions are generous. Also had one of their drinks, which was quite nice. The ambiance is kind of old dinner and it's kind of unassuming from outside. The quality of food doesn't seem to match the decor of the place. It'd be cool if they could play more into the retro dinner ambiance maybe? Loved the cat photos though in the back room! The server was very attentive but did seem a bit annoyed when we asked for a little more time to decide on an order and when we asked for the check. They kept repeating it was "one tab" and we said yes that's fine but we didn't get our check yet so we can't pay if we don't have our bill. And they kept saying "Yes but it's one tab". I'm still not sure what was happening but eventually we got our check and paid and it was very reasonable pricing. I'm not sure if the one tab policy is typical or just because we were there for the Silent Book Club event - that would be important to know ahead of time. This is definitely a fitting place for Seattle and they are welcoming and friendly. I got the meatloaf and it was exactly what I needed. It had Guinness gravy. What a unique little place in the cute Ballard area. You walk in thinking it's a Mexican restaurant, but it's typical diner food. They seemed thrown off by the need for two high chairs and where to store a stroller, but they eventually got us situated that way. Service was great after we were seated. Food was typical diner food, but good. I had the beet salad and tots. My family ate a Bleu cheese burger, regular burger, and fried chicken breakfast platter. Everyone liked their food. But...we came to eat, and the breakfast/brunch fare was really disappointing. I had the "Hippie Scramble" which was described as featuring garlic herb mushrooms, corn and other yummy veggies. Instead I received a very bland, boring, unseasoned colorless egg something with teeny bits of broccoli and no other identifiable veg. And Not.One.Mushroom-one of the main reasons I ordered it. The so-called hash browns served with our dishes were a mushy glop. My husband described it as country potatoes/ mashed potatoes that sat steaming for too long. His eggs over easy were fine.
