    Fried Oyster Mushroom & Waffle
    Andy N.

OMG Gaia & Loki... you were the only restaurant I ate while in Jersey City and I am okay with that. Simply put: everything was amazing. I called ahead for a party of ten over a weekend brunch and they were very accommodating. With it raining, I was worried they'd be booked up but they were able to make space and welcome us into their cute, eclectic restaurant. The menu was vast and filled with American favorites including sandwiches, texmex, waffles, pancakes, and more. They also had a few specialty items including a Fried Oyster Mushroom and Waffles combo, which I ultimately ended up ordering. The mushroom was fried to golden perfection and the waffle was one of the best vegan ones I've ever had. It was so much food on one plate that I barely finished it myself. I also loved how the owner came by to check in on us and even offered us small bowls of honeydew that they had just gotten. This was so appreciated while we were perusing the menu since we were so hungry walking into the shop. My friends who are not vegan were also raving about the food, with one ending up ordering dessert for himself... and he never does such a thing while dining out! That's when I knew we all gave them our seal of approval. I couldn't have been happier with this choice of eating here for brunch and would come back again the next time I'm in Jersey City.

This place is great! So happy to be able to get a plastic free, cruelty free meal! Usually when I try a plant based burger, especially with plant based cheese or bacon I am disappointed, but not this time. This burger really took me back to a time when I ate greasy bacon cheeseburgers without the exploitation & environmental impact. Theres a huge difference between a place that gives you a vegan option and a place that makes meals for vegans. Their food, service and atmosphere were all top notch. I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you chose from the menu.

This is a pretty good spot for date night! My bf chose this place cause he really likes it and I can see why. Not only are the portions huge but it doesn't really make you miss meat (I'm not vegan so that's pretty high praise)

Came her on a Friday night around 6 without a reservation and was seated, there is the bar and two tables for non reservation people. Each table has a bottle to of water with mint in it, which is such a nice touch. The staff is super friendly. At the end of the meal they gave a complimentary gluten free cookie since they ran out of the regular ones, we liked it so we bought one to go too. The owner was so nice and apologized that they had not more regular ones. This place reminds me of a Greek diner, they have a gyro on the menu which was recommended but we went with the pineapple fried rice and the grilled portobello sandwich, plenty of food for us, the salad was huge and packed the toppings. The standout was the pecan dressing. Thick, cream and sweet, I never had anything like it before and it was one of the best dressings I've tried. I also like the sesame sticks in the salad which added a nice crunch, as did the walnuts, plenty of mushrooms as well. My husband's rice was the perfect combo of sweet and salty. Had an umami flavor and also came with Nan bread and avocado which balanced out the dish. The presentation of all the dishes were superb, the pineapple fried rice came in a half pineapple! The prices are between 20-30 a dish which is reasonable for the quality and portion. They have a great desert menu and we were tempted to get cake but opted for a cookie so I can eat it at the movie we were going to. Food came out at a reasonable place and we spent about an hour here, some tables where there longer and they will definitely not rushing anyone, also there is one bathroom and it's very clean. I want to come back and will make a reservation next time. I highly recommend for vegan, vegetarian and even meat eaters just because the staff, portions and flavors are so good.

I chose this place because my sister-in-law's husband is vegan. I'm sorry to say that even he didn't like it very much. The food is bland and pricey. I don't think it's worth the money it cost. The only good thing was the homemade bread that was offered at the beginning. If it weren't for him, I would have no reason to go.

I'm so overdue for this review. Jackie and Rossi, the owners, are incredibly warm and welcoming -- they've created a space that feels special. Brad along with their team are just as lovely, always inviting and attentive every time I visit. I seriously love this place. From the weekly specials to the piña coladas, homemade croissants, and that tamarind peach iced tea. every moment sparks joy. Not to mention I always leave "full"-filled. Weekend brunch is an absolute must. It's BYOB, and the interior is decorated so beautifully -- it's the perfect vibe for a relaxing, indulgent treat.

If you are a hungry vegetarian and looking for a place to be with like-minded friends, I would recommend coming here. It is bring your own bottle which includes you could bring your wine or beer, but not hard liquor. The place is bright and inviting. Spacious one room bathroom. I saw only one waitress for the entire restaurant and it's busy on Friday night. We spent around $60pp base or more if you have some appetizers that you're sharing with your friends. The food is delicious and I had the chicken quesadilla and shared a few appetizers. The cheesecake is amazing and makes me wonder is a real cheesecake.

Dude, I've been vegan 10 years and I think this has been my most memorable vegan experience across the USA. Seriously, the absolute best vegan food I ever had. I'm siting here now listening to Ordinary Love x Sade, drinking mint infused water, and smiling. Very friendly staff--we had a new guy with an accent. He was so sweet and helpful. They also decorated the exterior and interior for the holidays. Highly recommend.

Gaia & Loki was a great find for vegan food in the heart of JC. *AMBIANCE* The restaurant is bright, clean and has modern touches. We came for brunch on the weekend and were seated right away. They also have outdoor seating which would be nice when the weather decides to cool down a bit. *FOOD* At the recommendation of our waitress, she recommended trying the mushroom and spinach empanadas ($18). This was probably my favorite thing that we ordered and was a hit. It comes with three large empanadas, with a crispy crunchy exterior. The filling was scrumptious, mimicking the texture of meat. You probably couldn't even tell the filling was made of mushroom and spinach! I also ordered the eggplant parm ($20) which came with a side of linguine and bread. This was also delicious. *SERVICE* Service was friendly and our waitress gave really helpful recommendations. Overall, was pretty impressed by the vegan food here and would definitely come back to try the other dishes!

Great service! No wait as we came on a Saturday during brunch. Food very flavorful and a good variety of options to choose from. Love the decor and background music playing. We had the pleasure to chat with the owner Jackie who has an amazing back story of how the restaurant came about. I wish this business nothing but blessings and success. Highly recommend Downside is finding parking which is not establishments fault.

Finally tried this posh vegan restaurant! Love all the velvet with white & gold accents. The service was so-so. The guy was rude, didn't greet me, didn't even come to my table after I sat down and as you can see from my photos nothing there was busy or upsetting. After I made intentional eye contact hinting for attention before deciding I shouldn't eat there if I feel mistreated, he came over with water I couldn't finish saying thank you before he walked away then sent a girl to take my order. She smiled and was helpful during my visit. After I ate, she referred me to him at the bar to pay - he didn't even make eye contact with me. I gave a small tip for that behavior I hope it goes to the girl not him at least. The fried rice was different I've never had pineapple veggie fried rice - it was more sweet than I'd like so wouldn't order it again. Loved the warm pita with avocado though - I ate it first before it got cold. The bathroom smelled horrible although the decor was cute. I really had a bad taste about the energy of the guy serving. If I went and saw him there in the future I'd not even give my business. I'd walk right out. I'm a smiley, kind person so there was no reason for his dismissiveness.

Incredible Vegan Spot! Absolutely amazing vegan food--everything was super fresh, flavorful, and satisfying without that overly processed taste you sometimes get at other places. They had a great variety of dishes, which made it hard to choose (in the best way!). This is definitely going on my list of top favorite vegan spots. Can't wait to come back and try more!

Accompanying a vegan friend, I ended up at Gaia & Loki for an early Saturday dinner. At 5m, the establishment had no customers, but that changed quickly. My friend and I ordered the plant-based empanadas ($18) to share, and I ordered the grilled mushroom salad ($19) for myself. Everything arrived promptly, w/10 minutes. I did not expect such large empanadas. Then again, given the price point, the portion makes sense. The fried outer crust remained crispy without having too much oil or crumbling and drying out. The filling seemed indistinguishable from meat filling. Interestingly enough, the consistency of the filling seemed less crumbly than I've seen in empanadas, almost dumpling-like. This in no way detracted from the experience. The mushroom salad arrived with similarly large portions. The cherry tomatoes provided bright acidity, the walnuts crunchy texture contrast, and grilled mushrooms delicious umami. I have never felt more full eating a salad before.

This sandwich is usually not something that is available vegetarian so i was curious to see the flavors and textures. The steak is chewy and meaty so if you are not a fan of faux meat then i would proceed with caution. I enjoy the cheeses here as they are unique and different from each other. The sandwich overall was okay though not my favorite sandwich ever. - smoked Mac and cheese (7/10): macaroni with smoked goat cheese, cheddar, mozzarella baked in a cast iron skillet and topped with vegan pancetta and breadcrumbs. This was a cozy appetizer especially on a cold day. The flavors of the cheese are rich and smoky with a hint of saltiness from the pancetta and breadcrumbs. I would have liked it to be a larger portion and offered as an entree. WOULD I GO BACK? Maybe. I liked the ambiance and the option to try dishes that are usually meat heavy but the cuisine is not my personal favorite.

They were selling margaritas outside at this event. Me and another dad just finished our margaritas and decided to walk into Pet Shop with our empty plastic cups to see if they could make any to go drinks. We were greeted by Jessie at the empty bar. I told him "hey we have these plastic cups....any chance we can purchase to go drinks for the event outside." He said no...which was fine. But then he reached across the bar and snatched the cups out of our hands stating he could not let us walk out with the empty cups we came in with. He could have asked us to hand him the cups instead of grabbing it from us like that. We were stunned for a minute that that actually happened. So after that happened I asked if I can use the restaurant's bathroom. Jessie seemed annoyed...looked at us up and down and replied "the bathroom are for paying customers only." We took it as judgement as if the other dad and I were some kind of peasants. We ended up purchasing 2 margaritas at the bar in order to use the restaurant's bathroom. The margaritas were good and priced good($10 each). The business was empty. Wasn't like he was busy. The bartender Jessie was acting like an a**hole. No table service so you order at the bar, which wasn't a hassle at all. As the night went on (8pm) the music got pretty aggressive and extremely loud. I get that it's a bar, but there were probably 30 people inside and suddenly you couldn't hear the person sitting across from you. The food consists of typical bar fare, but it's 100% vegetarian. I like the loaded tater tots - they're nice with a few jalapeño pieces, the savory "meat", and topped with creamy cheese. I've definitely had better wing alternatives and vegan ranch sauce was not good. Lastly, we tried the pet shop tacos and they were mostly void of flavor in a dry tortilla. If you're a vegetarian and looking for late night bar food, perhaps this will do the trick. If you're looking for a good dinner and a couple drinks in a super laid back environment, maybe not.

Funny enough, we met our only other vegan friend there. So, from the vegan perspective, this is a popular and tasty place. We started with drinks, being lunchtime, we opted for non alcoholic drinks, the matcha colada and the salty maple macchiato. The matcha colada had a nice color but tasted mostly like coconut and pineapple which was still yummy. Friends ordered 3 different kinds of sushi and dan dan noodles with tofu. I was confused with the sushi as I thought vegans didn't eat fish...so yes I asked and was told that they probably made the "fish" with tapioca. I did try a bite of each roll (I was still full from the fest) and I was surprised that it tasted pretty good. They did a nice job with the roll and presentation. The matcha cheesecake was nice and creamy. I would not have known it was vegan. I don't normally like food that pretends to be something else because it usually doesn't live up to the real thing. The idea is that it is not pretending to be something but rather substituting with vegan options, I do think from a health perspective, I am more open to trying more vegan foods. Ambiance felt upscale and wait staff were helpful and congenial. I hear dinner time gets packed here. I may have to try again when I have not eaten already.
