This review is late for a move circa Aug 2019, pre-pandemic. Like Tei'Anne W. writes, Darragh showed up reeking of alcohol and was MIA for the two helpers he hired. Moreover: -- Darragh showed up 5 hours late, because last minute, on the day of the move, he decided to take another move job during the same window of time we had reserved multiple days in advance. -- They completely broke and cracked the screen of our TV. Darragh did not take the cost of the TV off from the job, and instead offered to provide a used TV replacement, which of course never happened. -- Darragh took long breaks during the move and so I started to supervise him as we were paying by the hour. Darragh is an ALCOHOLIC and was likely taking swigs between breaks. Someone else reported long breaks as well, and found them smoking weed. He was moonlighting at clubs back then, either as a DJ or bouncer, which could explain his delinquency. I was angry, and had meant to post this review earlier, but they came up again on our new search for movers. read more

Top of the mark for moving and just straight forward professional service. I needed movers to bring all belongings from my personal storage as well as 2 rooms at the house my wife and I were staying at. I called a week out from our move from Newark, Ca to Mather, Ca; some 112 miles away to our first and forever home. The guys showed up at my storage at 10:00 am and made quick work of the 10x10 storage that was loaded to the gills with various stuff ranging from big screen lcd tvs to 250 lb shop display cases and everything in between. Next up was the house, 2 rooms worth of stuff as well as recently delivered dining room furniture, new bedroom set, patio furniture, entertainment center for living/family room, office equipment, refrigerator, and various storage bins. We hit the road with a packed 26 foot truck at around 3:00 pm. The guys made it to the house about 3 hours later around 6:00 pm. 3 guys, a 26 foot truck, an empty 4 bedroom house and a new chapter to my wife and my life. By 8:00 pm, the truck was unloaded, everything made it into the house intact. The guys even volunteered to bring my 2 queen sized box springs and mattresses upstairs (even though these were delivered to the house the day before). Gaelic Moving & Storage will definitely get my business and referrals. Do Not Hire ANYONE Else. These guys are the best in the business. They showed up an hour and a half late and managed to knock a very large branch off of the tree outside my old apartment with their truck (see pics). I was calm about this as I understand these things happen, but in hind sight I should have sent them home. Did not get the move done until 8:30pm due to them being late making this a hell of a day. I even pitched in a lot and helped move stuff. I ended up giving them a good tip despite all of this as it's a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic/economic crisis, I know people are hurting. That was also a mistake. The guy who was in charge of the move directly (Barry) assured me that he would pay for whatever charges I ended up with for the broken branch. I have tried calling him (says he'll get on it) and Darragh (no response) so I'm out $130. Don't give these guys your money and stay away from them in all aspects of life. This review is about a move last October (2019) for moving a studio into storage. The studio was only two blocks away from the storage. It was one of my most frustrating mover related experiences. First they were late in showing up. I had a tight window and a flight to catch later. Once they started the move, I noticed they were spending long periods of time outside in between taking loads to the truck. This struck me as odd so I went outside and found them smoking weed. Yup! On the clock. I asked them to please hurry as I was short of time. They did. They quit smoking and got back to work... but only for one load. The same issue arose after that load. They disappeared and I caught them smoking more weed. There was zero respect for my time and money. Ultimately the move took way too long! By a few hours. I was helpless as I was stuck with them. They then proceeded to charge me for all those extra hours. I was in such a hurry that I just gave up and paid them and promised myself that one day I would review them online. They were supposed to come on Monday at 10. No show. I called and they reassured me they'd be there and get the job done... and then asked to reschedule to Tuesday at 9 after keeping me waiting for several hours. On Tuesday they didn't show up until 12:30, did one small load, charged me for 5 hours, and said they'd come back Wednesday at 8 to finish the job. Wednesday, Darragh didn't show up until 9:30 and the rest of the crew until past 10. They did two small loads and charged me for 7 hours. A solid quarter of that was cigarette breaks based on the butts they left all over my property. I'd have fired them after the first day except no one else was available on such short notice (I checked). If I could go back in time I'd hire someone else - practically anyone else in fact. read more

I needed furniture only moved from one location to another: Pros -available on short notice -very polite Cons -broke a drawer for a custom side table to pieces -were 3ish hours late -some undisclosed fees became an issue after I had specifically asked about additional costs and fees (dealt with professionally but still... annoying). This is the fourth move I've done with these guys, and they are my go to movers. Communicative, flexible, and down to adjust. I love buying pieces for my home off CL and other resale sites, but sometimes it's hard to make it work with movers. Darraugh is always down to talk through a potential pick up for me. On the initial call he was able to give me quote and set up a time to come pack my stuff. On moving day Darragh showed up with Malachi and Fabian and the three of them got right to work. They took time to wrap and protect my furniture then proceeded to load my "Pod." I really appreciated how well they handled the fact my apartment is hard to access and the Pod was not exactly close to the elevator. I hired Darragh last month when I bought a couch off of Craigslist. After quoting me a fair price, we arranged a time for him to pick it up in Corte Madera without me even being there. He then delivered it, nicely protected in shrink wrap, to my North Oakland home, then hauled away my old sleeper sofa, delivering it to a friend's house in El Cerrito. BEWAR!!!! If we could give 0 stars we would. We hired darragh and his team to do a move into pods and an apt from our home approx. 6 months ago. Darragh claimed to have an emergency and thus instead of 3 guys we only had 2 for a large job. The move took much longer than anticipated and they ruined nearly every piece of furniture we own. We have just unpacked our pods only to find more damage to the point that I had to pause during our recent move (moving from an apt back to a full size house with a different moving crew) to collect myself. In the initial move into the apt we brought this to darragh's attention. He was not super apologetic, but eventually agree to give us a slight discount (which did not come close to covering the damage). The total end result damage was: a fully shattered lamp, a missing lamp, a totally broken kids chair, a scratched antique armoire, black hand prints on a white velvet headboard and cream upholstered chair, two rips in a lamb skin/wool leather chair, a broken door on a kids play kitchen, a hole in the back of couch 1, a big scuff mark on couch 2, scratches on 2 leather cubes with worn/scratched off pieces, a large chip off our entertainment center, etc. etc. etc. I've gone back and now read the negative reviews, thinking how could we have missed these, and find it fascinating that darragh notes they are ALL competitors. Just for the récord I highly doubt this based on our experience. Perhaps the move would have been different if darragh was there himself???? Attached are pictures of some of the damage (most of which darragh has seen but had little sympathy/apology for). I'm not surprised by the owner comment. We attempted to resolve this with him during round 1 of our move and he raved about his workers then and would not accept this was the type of damage they caused. After round 2 (unpacking of our pods 6 mos later by another moving company) I couldn't help but leave an updated review and have chosen to not engage further. That said, a response needs to be made in that the bad reviews are NOT competitors nor someone trying to do him harm. I am devastated by some of the damage (ie an antique armoire that we've had for years that was passed down) which is not replaceable nor fixable. The photos speak for themselves and there's more where that came from (unfortunately). If we could have gone back in time I would have paid more for movers that did not ruin most of our furniture!!!! I used these guys for a simple move across town. It was the worst moving experience of my life. **Update: Since the time I wrote this review I received several annoying messages from both the owner's (Darragh's) account as well as other (fake?) profiles on Yelp. The owner even MESSAGED PEOPLE I AM RANDOMLY FRIENDS WITH ON YELP TO TRY TO FIND ME. He never apologized for the lousy service, he simply claimed that I was mistaken, wrong, tricked or whatever. I hope he's reformed his business practices since my absolutely atrocious experience, which to this day stands as the worst customer experience I've ever had in my life.*** The movers were scheduled to come Saturday around 12. I waited and waited. I tried calling them. They didn't pick up. Finally around 4pm they answer the phone and tell me their morning move was taking longer than expected. I don't have a problem with a morning move taking longer than expected, but I do have a problem with not answering phone calls or letting me know. They tell me that they hope to make it out by 6pm that night. 8pm rolls around and they still haven't shown up. They finally call me and tell me they will move me tomorrow, Sunday. At that point I had spent the entire saturday waiting around in a nearly empty apartment. We rescheduled for Sunday morning and surprise surprise they don't show up until the evening. Same story as the day before. They weren't answering phone calls and offered no apologies. By the time they show up it is late in the evening and it has started raining. Once they do start moving they both ask to use my bathroom. I say "of course." I check my bathroom later and there is piss all over the floor and toilet. Rude. We then manage to pack up my minimal amount of stuff fairly quickly and get to my apartment located 15 min away. They of course got lost and it took them 30 min to get there. They show up and start unpacking. They drop a table and break off a chunk of a shelf. None of my stuff is very heavy. They also scratched up a desk. When time comes to pay, they have been moving me for about an hour and a half. I say it has been an hour and a half and he says "we have a two hour minimum." I am shocked that after such horrible service one would still demand their two hour minimum. Because I am not the type of person to stand up to a tough-looking mover, I fork over the minimum. If I could give a negative star rating I would!!!! These people just showed up drunk! Hit a car and the bumper was in the street! Then they left me stranded with some of my stuff on their truck!! Rickys moving who I initially hired had flaked on me so I hired this guy. I found him on Craigslist. He seemed good enough to get the job done. I had been in contact with Darrah all day! He was supposed to arrive between 2&3! He actually came at 5:53 pm! Then "couldnt fit" into my driveway (because he was drunk). Even I drove a moving truck to move here. He was supposed to be professional so why he couldnt do it I dont know. Then said I had too much stuff to move!!!! All of things were in boxes and bag plus a few heavy items. I told them exactly how much I had before they got there. So I have no clue why it would have taken more than the 3-4 hours than originally quoted. After all of that I had a meltdown!!! They fled the scene when I was wiping my tears!!!! It was an irish guy supposedly but he did have an accent and 2 black guys!!! please never hire from them!!! **update** He called me to say this review will hurt his business. As if I cared at this point. He said he wasn't drunk but that his helpers were and they pressured him to leave the scene. He asked me not to call the police when I said I would be filling a report in the morning. But its Too late. He didn't even leave information on the car he hit. I had to give it to them. We were very happy with Gaelic movers in our move from San Francisco to Oakland. While they weren't "on-time" for our move due to another client's move in the morning, they did call to follow-up and let us know the adjustment. That's pretty much all I could have asked. They loaded up all of our stuff very quickly yet carefully and unloaded it in the same efficient manner. We had some pretty heavy stuff and they moved it as if it were all just pillows. Also, not a scratch on anything. Did I mention that they were careful? I just want to underscore that they really did treat our stuff with care -- not a scratch on a wall or any of the furniture. A nice little bonus was that there was a little item that was left in their truck, and they were super-quick in making arrangements with me to get it. Move 28 in 31 years. If I move four times in the next five months, I will not only average 1 per year, but also provide Darragh with a steady stream of business from me alone. They were very efficient, and also used the kind of sense you'd like to describe as "common", but is actually in limited supply. For instance, when I offered the opinion that my bed could be transported in one piece, they politely observed that its intrinsic IKEAn qualities might not withstand the (three block) journey. They took it apart, transported it, and expertly put it back together. This maneuver is easily worth the money I paid them, as I would have either moved it in one piece and broken (or weakened) it, or taken it apart only to put it back together backwards or something. Hire these guys. They know what they're doing, and will get you from Point A to Point B so smoothly you'll actually find that yourself bored silly mid-moving day. read more

Third move in the last 18 months with these guys (yeah, I know, I move a lot.) As with the prior two moves, no complaints whatsoever. The movers were professional and friendly. They treated my possessions with the appropriate amount of care, and had a good attitude throughout. I called them on a Wednesday, and they were able to help with the move on Friday. Great rate, no surprise add-ons, no phony travel charges, etc. I saw there were a couple of negative posts here. I don't get those, as that was not my experience at all. I had no bad experiences at all. Whenever I move again (and I hope it is not anytime soon, as I am tired of moving) I will certainly try to use Darragh and his crew again. Big thumbs up. read more

I promised my friend 'dia I'd help her move. She had hired movers so I knew it wouldn't be just the two of us lugging furniture up three flights of stairs. The guys at Gaelic Movers were late, but they were courteous enough to give us a heads up as the job before us was more then they anticipated so we had time to walk down the street, grab some breakfast and wrap up last minute things. Darragh and the other gentlemen who helped with the move were quick, efficient and definitely committed to getting the move finished in a reasonable amount of time. We were grateful that they were so hardworking. Three flights of stairs is a bizzatch for sure. We were even more grateful that they were so nice and friendly. I used Gaelic moving in April to move across San Francisco. Overall, you have to love their fixed cost pricing. All you pay for is their time from when they arrive at point A, to when they leave point B. That's a rarity, none of this "$20 surcharge for every flight of stairs" that I've seen before, and I love it. They're also reasonable people, which proved to be very important. My experience ------------------ Darragh (the owner) is great talking over email, real friendly guy. We got the appointment set up, good to go. Day of move arrives, and truck arrives an hour late with some proactive communication but no apology. That's better than not showing up at all, but still annoying. Additionally, 3 guys show up instead of the 2 guys I ordered. I got mad, and the foreman started getting mad back at me because he had no idea there was only supposed to be 2 guys (and doesn't have the greatest people skills). There apparently wasn't enough communication between the person who sets up the appointments (Darragh) and the teams (unless Darragh also happens to be on the team). So make sure you clarify whether that will be the case when you book. In fact, get all of the details you discuss with Darragh in writing and print it out for the crew so they're on same page. I tried calling Darragh, and no success. The foreman calls Darragh, and gets through. Darragh apologizes for mixup and offers to include the 3rd guy for free. This was great to hear, but he was doing the work and getting overall job done more quickly, so I ended up deciding to pay for him. Finally, throughout I felt like I was the only one hustling. Not to say that the team was going slow, but I didn't get a sense that my time was their top concern. I wanted to go as quickly as possible, but the foreman would keep saying things like "oh you can help out as much as you want, or we can take care of it all". No, I want to get done ASAP, so tell me how we get this job done ASAP. --------------------- Overall I'd say their heart is in the right place, which is missing from most businesses out there (especially in moving industry), hence why they probably have so many 5 star reviews. Relatively, they're amazing. But there were too many operational hiccups (communication between Darragh & team, communication / people skills of foreman, Laissez-faire attitude to showing up on time, lack of hustle, etc) that prevent me from giving them a high rating. I reached out to Gaelic moving early in the week for a move on the following Tuesday. After a couple emails back and forth the said we were confirmed for Tuesday and that we would work out the details soon. Going on their confirmation I ordered Zippgo boxes which I only get for a certain time frame and I set up delivery with the apartment which took a bit of work. I emailed them asking to call and they did not get back to me. I called them asking them to give me a call to set up the final details and they did not get back to me. Friday night before a Tuesday move they sent me an email and said they had a scheduling conflict leaving me without movers and scrambling to find someone to help. This is just bad business. I booked Gaelic Moving and was impressed with how fast they replied on Yelp. I request a 3-person team because we have a lot of stuff and I know a 2-person team won't be very efficient. Then Darragh called me and said we were all confirmed for 9am on Saturday. He says it will be himself and two others. He gives me a quoted price for 3 people. I have a bad back and we have a toddler, so arranging for a baby-sitter etc costs us money and time bu it's worth it to save my back and that's what I'm hoping for. These were not professional movers and the owner was not professional at all. The only reason it's not 1 star is because yes, they did end up moving me from house to house. But I had to work alongside them as the third man. I don't understand business owners that behave like this - it's bad form at best, and dishonest at worst - just be straight and upfront. Why is that so hard? Saturday rolls around and no one is there at 9am. I try calling Darragh. No answer. I wait 15 mins. Call again. No answer. I try texting. No answer. At 930am I call and leave a voice I need at least a reply to know if they've cancelled, are running late, etc. I tell him that if I don't hear back soon I will assume they've canceled so I can book someone else. 936am I get a text (not a call) from Darragh which says "The guys are on the way, sorry for the delay" At 9:50am, the moving van shows up and two guys come out. Not three. They tell me the third is injured (they don't say if it's Darragh or not). They don't mention the price change at all for 2 people and just walk out to start the job. I text Darragh that I'm not super happy with this change in plans with no communication whatsoever - especially since it's just 2 people. This text is sent at 10am. 2 hours later he texts that they're short because of injuries including himself. That's reasonable but why are you telling me this 3 hours after the job is supposed to start? He says "Ok I get it. Sorry that it's taking longer than expected, of course 2 men over three. Balances out tho either way... 2 men is $100 an hour which includes truck and materials gas is $15 for local jobs, thank you." This is, of course, total BS. A three-person rate is $150 per hour. The two-man team is $100. The whole point of booking a three-person job is that you'll save money on the total hours. They movers themselves are very nice guys. But they do not work efficiently or like any movers I've ever seen. I won't go into detail, but needless to say, they are in no real rush here. Also, the lift gate on their truck is broken so the heavier items are real hard for them (again as two instead of three). The load up takes about 3 hours. We have about 2 bedrooms worth of stuff, but only 3 big pieces of furniture (no bed, no couch). I ride with them to our new house. I watch them slowly move things out of the truck with no real plan or organization. I realize that at their pace, it will take at least another 2.5 hours to unpack and move everything. I do not want to spend $550-$600 when it should have been about $450 with three people. So I become the third over and start moving at a pace that makes them work a little harder. I also tell them to just move the heavy furniture and leave all the boxes on the car port since god knows how long it would take them to move those. Watching them work was honestly painful. They would get into the truck, walk to the back of it, pick up one box and then exit the truck, walk to the carport, and do it all over again. I've never seen anyone unload a truck like this. I end up in the truck moving all the boxes to the edge so they can just walk it from truck to carport. In the end, it takes them 4 hours and 15 minutes with me working the last hour with them to unload the truck. My back is killing me. Darragh never really apologizes. I never even got a phone call the whole day of the move. But hey, we're moved in. Probably could have gotten the same quality of work done with a $50 uHaul, two friends and some bbq. Lesson learned - avoid these jokers. read more

Very courteous, extremely hard-working, and incredibly fast. And best of all, when our closing got delayed by two weeks and every other mover I called was booked, they were available and showed up ten minutes early. They didn't break a thing and rounded to the quarter-hour rather than round up to the hour as other movers do. The downside? At least as of June 2009, they're new enough at the moving business that they don't bother with niceties like paperwork or insurance. If you're the compulsive type, you might be put off, but they're so professional and industrious that I was quickly won over. read more

We hired Darragh + his crew of 3 guys for an EPIC MOVE: 7 roommates, 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen and large living room.. and we were moving into TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. Some of us are borderline hoarders, so our apartment was a warzone when they arrived. There were piles of junk around the house and several half-packed or badly-packed boxes. This was not an easy move, but they took a deep breath and got right to work. The entire move took 9 hours, which I thought was very impressive (incl. lots of packing, and drive times to both locations; excl. 1-hour lunch break) Darragh was a great lead and communicator. After surveying the apartment he ran his game plan by me before getting to work. Roughly 2 hours into the move, he spoke up as soon he thought they might need an extra hour or two. (I'd say we still came within very reasonable limits of the quote). In general, no one hesitated to ask us questions if anything was the *slightest* bit unclear. Other plus-es + Came by to the house to do an in-person survey for the estimate/quote. + Hourly price I was quoted is lower than other companies rated between 4.5-5 stars on Yelp. + Darragh was super upfront about the few minutes he had to spend looking for a misplaced key truck, and actually took labor time off of the final bill. + They were available to move on a Sunday morning, other movers I called didn't. + Post-move, Darragh took extra (unbilled) time to walk me through the division of labor / effort so I could fairly divvy up costs between the 7 roommates, each of us had varying amounts of stuff to pack and move. + Everyone was friendly and had a great sense of humor, even though WE were all stressed out and they were working from 9:30AM til roughly 7PM. On a Sunday. This great attitude made the move less painful. + OF COURSE NOTHING WAS DAMAGED! Reliable, honest and people I'd actually hang out with -- I wouldn't hire anyone else! read more

I just had the best experience with movers I've ever had, and I am a former mover. Not only were Dj and Malachi exceptionally careful and super efficient, they are really nice people!! I figure that we might have to hire them for more hours because our move seemed rather large but they got it done in half the time I would've when I was working as a mover. I had a move scheduled with Gaelic for 9AM on a Monday. Darragh and Shane showed up reeking of beer at 11:30 and dropped a box of Le Creuset pans down the stairs within the 1st five minutes that they were there... At this point I came very close to throwing Shane down the stairs after the pans... BUT....All in all, they are nice guys, and they did about as good a job as my buddies would have done. And, after the rocky start, they pulled it together and did a good job. Would I hire them again? No. Would I grab a beer with them? Sure...just not at 9AM. read more

We did our best to pack well ahead of time per Darragh's recommendation but we're unsure about handling of larger valuables. (After living in one place for 20 years we weren't exactly living simply) The Gaelic crew was able to arrive at 9 am to load up our boxes. If I could give zero stars, I would. I decided to book Gaelic for a job because they were a few bucks less than other quotes, but the potential of $10 less definitely wasn't worth the headache and stress Gaelic put me through! They canceled on me, via email, only 5 minutes before they were supposed to arrive, and made up a story as an excuse. If you party too hard to work, don't book the gig! I would never recommend Gaelic to anyone. If you want a professional and efficient moving service, go to Claddagh Moving!!! I'd give them 4.5 stars if I could. I'm only deducting a bit because I had trouble communicating with Darragh in the beginning. I'm chalking it up to Mercury in retrograde, and because he and his team had just worked 12 days straight (!!). Mike and Sean showed up really late on the day of my move because the job before me turned out to be much bigger and more complicated than they expected it to be/were led to believe. I didn't mind because it gave me more time to pack, and it's not like I was left wondering -- Darragh called me to give me the heads up and Sean called/texted as well with regular updates about his and Mike's ETA. When Mike and Sean arrived (at around 6) they were total sweethearts. Treated my stuff with care, were very personable, friendly, and didn't show any signs of strain from having worked a full day already. They wrapped up my mirror and screen with a quilt, saran wrapped my wooden desk. They were gentle with my stuff, which I appreciated. The whole process was smooth. Perhaps the easiest, smoothest move I've ever experienced. Yeah, there were some snafus, but not with the actual moving of my things, and to me that's what matters the most. I highly recommend Gaelic Moving and would use them again (and probably will considering how often I move). Plus, the yelp deal doesn't hurt! read more

On a coworker's recommendation, I hired Gaelic to complete a move this past Friday and I've been raving about them all weekend. Communication was timely, and to the point. I scheduled with Darragh via email. He checked in a few days before to confirm our start, and called 15 minutes before arrival. As requested, a two man team (Darragh and Joel) completed the move- a downtown loft apartment with 6 years worth of stuff, mostly on loft level. They were fast, efficient and careful... and came with their own supplies (dolly, blankets, shrink-wrap, tape). They even took care to return a handful of change that had dropped from a drawer I should have emptied prior to move day. Price point was standard, and rates straightforward. Attitude was amazing. Both Darragh and Joel are incredibly nice, really down to earth guys, while still maintaining an honorable level of professionalism. I was ribbing Joel a bit as he smiled every time he walked through the door. Do you smile when you carry things?? Because I know that I don't! Today is my second time using Darragh and his crew from Gaelic Moving & Storage. The first time was pleasant and seamless which is why I used them again. Today was no exception! Aside from being true professionals in the care they take with moving items, I appreciate the courtesy and enthusiasm in which they work. Darragh is always accessible from the point of scheduling the move and with frequent updates throughout. Knowing that he is accessible cuts down on anxiety. After completing the job today, we discussed clearing out my garage and taking items to the dump.
