I had a great experience shopping here. I wanted to duplicate a piece I owned years ago, and the owner was incredibly helpful at locating almost exactly the same thing. The only thing different is that it's BETTER. Because a portion of it is handmade, I couldn't walk out with it the day I went into the store, but I'm very pleased with the product, and the wait time was not bad at all. I have been sleeping on a Japanese futon (also known as a shikibuton) for a couple of years, and it was time for me to find a new one. I found Futon Favorite online, and I'm so glad I did! They are the only shop I could find in Phoenix that makes and sells traditional-style Japanese futons made of natural materials. Tom was wonderful to talk to, and my futon was ready in just a couple of days for a very reasonable price. I love it already - it's very comfortable and the perfect size and weight. A few years ago my brother purchased a futon here for his apartment, and then gave it to me when he moved out of state. I had it for about a year and then needed to replace the cushion because my cat had gotten sick and soiled it. Tom, the owner, was extremely helpful in helping me find the right cushion and even threw in a waterproof cover in case this were to happen again. It's about another year later and now I needed a new frame because my roommate damaged it. Again Tom was extremely helpful and personable through the entire process. Well the flat futon mattress was horrible and was actually capable of doing real damage to the ol' caboose if you sat down too fast. After years of purchasing different types of beds (water, spring, foam, hybrid), my husband noticed his back would hurt. It got so bad, that he sleeping on the floor. Since I didn't like our mattress either, we looked into different options for beds. We decided to get a futon type mattress for the floor (aka Shikibuton). My husband and I went to many "traditional" furniture stores, but did not like any of the choices or the prices. That is when I found the Futon Favorite. My husband and I came into the store and was greeted by the owner, Tom Flower. We explained our situation. Tom was very helpful and very knowledgeable. We knew we were going to have the king size Shikibuton made, and wanted to re-paint our master bedroom, so timelines were not going to give us any issues. We also ordered the tatami mats (Japanese type of flooring) to go under the Shikibuton. We also had two meditation pillows made too. Tom, the owner, was upfront and told us that our order would take sometime (few weeks), because the tatami mats were coming from overseas. Note: Processing time (order/receiving) took about 3 weeks. We have had the Shikibuton/Tatami Mats for 3 months now and we are thrilled with the Shikibuton. Our back problems are gone. Yea!!!! In October I ordered online a $437 FIRM futon mattress from Planet Futon. This was after a lengthy discussion with a polite and helpful sales person. She assured me that the model I would be getting would fit the description of my needs perfectly. It was ~ Soft~ ! Sigh! My back hurt every night of the 3 nights I slept on it. I made several mistakes buying online: 1) I trusted the website's own (very positive) reviews. Never a good idea. 2) I didn't check the return policy. Everyone out there was giving 100 days or money back. I "assumed" and didn't look closer. I'm so confused with the two poor reviews of Futon Favorite. My experience was the complete opposite of what other had stated. I decided I wanted to purchase a futon for my guest room, mostly due to space restrictions in my 2nd bedroom. A full or Queen sized bed just would have taken up too much room. Plus, for the amount of visitors I typically receive, a bed would have been a waste of space. Moving on.. I found Futon Favorite strictly from driving past a few times on Camelback. This is great news for the Owner, not so great for someone who is in advertising to admit. But location is key and being a few miles from my place was an added bonus. Tom, the Owner, was very helpful and knows his stuff. He told me he has been in the Futon industry since 1992. I would consider him the "Futon King". I love how you can pick your frame, mattress, and cover all separately- so it's completely customized to your taste, color scheme and budget. Tom makes the mattresses by hand and I think that is impressive in this day and age. I purchased my futon on a Sunday afternoon and it was delivered the following Tuesday, so nine days later. My cover had to be ordered in and that caused the delay, plus the time for Tom to make the mattress. I paid $45 additional for my futon to be delivered and set up in my guest room. Service, value, and final product I all give 5 stars on. Futons sometimes get a bad reputation-mostly from those horrid black metal ones from college- but consider one for a second bedroom or den. Very sporadic place. Who knew buying a futon would be so confusing. Arms, bodies, pads oh my! Yeah, those arms in that color can fit on that body in xyz color. That futon comes in spring, but not in that size. That futon cover comes in that size in the wrong color. Ugh! Who knew finding a new futon would be so difficult. I think they offer a good selection, but the inventory was a little depleted. They also can order you the exact arms, body and futon you want, but you have to wait about a week or so. I contacted one of the competitors and they were very far out from where I live and work, their mattresses were almost too cheap (I think you get what you pay for) they don't have a outlet/store I can go anytime and see/bounce/sit I have to call first and they they will see if they have them....nice guy though but just not what I wanted to do. The second business was a lovely gentleman in a large store and he has a lovely selection of frames, but all the same mattress????? I am not sure what purpose that serves......I would think one might have more than one mattress to show me to compare foam/cotton/innerspring. But no.....I thanked him for his help, he was very helpful and nice to me. I saw Tom this morning (sat 9th may) and confirmed my order for my bed and he is going to have it ready by Wed/Thursday. I will definitely be back to look at a slat bed/frame down the road. or one of the many and lovely covers. I have already referred 3 people there and would do so to anyone in a moment. There are places that, when I'm independently wealthy, I intend to shop from lavishly, and Futon Favorite is one. This means that while my cocktail-party peers are touting their designer couches and $10,000 mattresses, I will be awash in futons... and this is okay with me, as they will be fine futons, comfortable futons, futons that wear well and represent on behalf of their species. It is not necessary to be independently wealthy to obtain one's first futon here, as the pricing's quite reasonable -- there's a luxury top end, of course, but the low end is comparable to what's going around on the interwebs, with superior mattress quality. I've been very pleased with my original mattress -- which far outperformed its specifications -- and its replacement (now airing happily in mid-floor, to make sure it's all puffed and happy before going on the frame) feels wonderful. The frame I bought back at the time of the original mattress is still highly satisfactory. Tom the owner is great -- he knows how to get a decision made without undue sales pressure. Last time, I think I knew exactly what I wanted and simply came in to pay and to pick it up -- and there was no fuss at all to try to up-sell me or anything annoying. This time, I had some parameters but really, no clues, and we were still done in 20 minutes, within my budget, with a mattress that thrills me (which the options I was considering elsewhere were emphatically not doing). When I'm independently wealthy, I shall have my staff pick up my herds of futons, though, as having the delivery guy snark that my tip was inadequate (this tip being on top of the delivery fee) was... certainly an opportunity to practice Zen acceptance of others in their fullness of being. read more

Instead of shooing me out of his store, he asked us what we needed. All the while, secretly hoping we weren't just there to use his restroom. My boyfriend and I had a mission. We had been looking for a futon mattress all day and were unsatisfied with the mattresses at Ikea and other futon furniture shops since it's likely I'll be sleeping on this mattress for a few months until we can move the bed. Discouraged, I looked for futon mattresses in the Phoenix area on my IPhone when Yelp suggested The Futon Favorite. We we're unsure about coming to a local business because we didn't know how the quality would be and were worried the price would cost an arm and a leg. After reading the reviews and learning Tom makes his products himself, we were even more hesitant, but decided to check it out anyway. When we entered, we understood what the negative reviews meant by the small shop being clustered and had too many options. However, Tom assisted us right away aiding us through our browsing process making the space more valuable as storage than a show room. We loved that we had so many options, too! We wanted a thick mattress that would be comfortable to sleep on and didn't need a cover or frame. We were worried since he makes the products that we weren't going to be able to take what we needed and go, but Tom had a product for us packed and ready. It was also almost half the price as a crummy futon mattress from Ikea that sells mattresses with no support or cushion for OVER $200. I told him that I had found his shop through Yelp and he brought up a few negative reviews that really concerned him like one written back in September. He told me he has been trying to contact her to correct her issues, but has been unsuccessful at reaching her. Being a social media guru, I talked him through a few social media etiquette rules and answered some general questions for him. This confirmed that Tom is very conscious about what is written and appreciates the positive feedback while also trying to correct the negative. We as media users just don't see these extra efforts. Personally, I found Tom to be a hardworking and very friendly guy. He's very concerned about his products and his customer's satisfaction which you're not going to find from a big name store. So I was looking for an all natural bed to begin floor sleeping as it was recommended by my naturopath (the natural bed not the floor sleeping). I was looking at shikibutons from Japan but wow are they out of my price range. During my search "The Futon Favorite" popped up and I went to have a look. What an unexpectedly delightful experience at this modest futon shop! We have been searching for a good futon to fill the guestroom for months. Craigslist, Overstock, Amazon, you name it. It always seems that buying furniature from a shop is going to be insanely expensive, but it's not so! They have a very affordable selection here and make the matresses to boot. Tom and his staff are so helpful, friendly and even gave us some good laughs. They let us hang out and test futons for as long as our lounging hearts desired and gave really great input where we needed it without being pushy. When it came down to price, they offered a great bargain and helpful wrap everything up for take home. The futon was pretty easy to put together and looks lovely in our home. I know that if we have any issues whatsoever in the future (which I don't anticipate), they'll be there to help. My husband and I were in the market to purchase a futon for our home office/den. I would not purchase this type of furniture online due to the need to feel the mattress and the quality of the futon. We were more concerned about the mattress than the frame and Tom at Futon Favorite did not disappoint. We selected a frame and mattress and arranged to take it home a few days later. When we got it home, we quickly realized that the color would not work with the decor in our home. I called Tom and he graciously agreed to order a different color that would work better in our home as long as we returned it undamaged and in the original box, which of course I would expect. Eek! Me -REALLY- thinks not! I just called Futon Favorite in Phoenix today to discuss ordering an organic futon. The guy who answered the phone was a real "piece of work". It says on the website to "call for a quote", so I did. Well, the person on the other end was very uncooperative and difficult. He was really sarcastic?! Among other things, he would not give me a quote and hassled me saying, "I really don't believe you really want to order a full, a queen or a king size". I explained it would be what my budget could afford and he continued the be-grading saying, "you are really going to determine a mattress by the price?!" ...."Uh?... YEAH!!! I am," I thought. He just wouldn't give me a price range?! and when I insisted, he said he was not comfortable giving out that information. I asked who I was speaking to and he said, "I am TOM the OWNER." Then he proceeded to explain how he is just "not right" in a pretty cocky & arrogant way and continued his badgering of me. Futon Favorite? The Owner is a really unpleasant, condescending and disrespectful person. Well, Tom you're not my Futon Favorite and, "no, I am not buying a mattress from you that is for sure!" I am so glad I called first instead of going down there. I would not recommend you waste your time with someone so disrespectful (he was pretty vulgar) and unappreciative of customers. With that poor "I don't care" attitude, you just don't know what you are in for (what a creep!). The store is located in a strip mall style building on Camelback Rd and 5th st. When you first walk into the store it does seem a little chaotic and overly full but the variety of items available quickly tells you why. This place provides a plethora of futon styles. Not only do the have the traditional couch that folds out into a bed style, they also carry platform beds, chairs, and lounges. Numerous covers in an endless supply of colors and designs are available to help protect your futon purchase. They also offer one accessories to compliment your our base like night stands, a room divider, lamps and so much more. Tom assisted me today and he is extremely knowledgeable about futons and ready to answer any question and well as provide insight and recommendations. The customer service is friendly and laid back and exceptional. He is willing to chat with you about anything while helping you with your futon purchasing experience. If you plan on purchasing a futon, I recommending checking this place out in your search. I ordered my 'real' futon here (just the cotton bed that goes on the ground), and they were able to special-order it in any color/material/thickness/etcetc. It was fun to look at the options. And oh, my back loves it. I think I'm one of the few people in the world who has switched from a memory-foam mattress to a super firm solid cotton mattress and hasn't looked back. Anyway, they have a lot of cool futon frames if you want the western folding kind. I ended up buying an unfinished platform frame from them because I needed under-the-bed storage. It hasn't diassembled/reassembled well due to some overzealous powerdrill action stripping the screws (oops), and when I went to the store to try and order some new screws the owner told me it wasn't possible. Oh well... he pulled out a box of spare hardware and picked through it to find some suitable replacements for me, I appreciated that.
