Out of all the Korean style fried chicken, Furai by far is my favorite. I've tried their traditional as well as the sweet & spicy sauce coated ones and both are great. Their pickled sides are great as well. They are fortunate that they haven't had to change this business model due to Covid since this chicken shop is an order & pick up chicken stand located inside the Zion market which is perfect when you need to shop anyways conveniently grab some togo chicken for dinner. What I'll usually do is first stop to order the chicken because it will take approximately 20min since it's made fresh to order. Half/Half: --+ Half Light Crispy Chicken: The chicken is perfectly fried when it's hot, but the coating becomes hard when the meat cools off. Some parts are chewy and dry as well. I will not order it again. --+ Half Original Chicken: Over-fried, and the coating is too hard. Some parts are juicy, while others are chewy and dry. -++Rice Skewer: Surprisingly better than I thought, though a bit cold. It's doable and somewhat resembles eating dessert. ---Potato Wedges: Technically, they're not potato wedges; they're just fries. Unfortunately, they're not enjoyable because they're soggy and tasteless. ---Sauce: The sweet, spicy sauce, soy garlic, and kang jung; the garlic sauce is simply disgusting, like soy sauce syrup with an overpowering garlic smell. This is my favorite Korean fried chicken in Irvine. Actually, it's probably my favorite in Orange county. Located inside the left side of Zion Market, Furai Chicken does really well on giving a delicious, fried-to-order meal at a cheap price. The sauces are surprising good, which is great. But the chicken nails it with the right amount of crunchiness, seasoning, and breading. All of it is so good, and they give you either a half or full chicken depending on what you order. I went with #1 original (half) with 3 rice cake skewers. Both the chicken and the rice cakes were perfectly cooked, served with sauces of your choice. Lemon Garlic (For the butter lovers) and Volcano (for the spicy stuff) were IMO the best sauces for that order. The others were too sweet for my taste, but none of them tasted cheap, which is a nice touch, and others will definitely enjoy them. It is best to call ahead because each order is made-to-order, and you probably wouldn't want to wait the 25 minutes for the food to be ready, which is perfect if you are also shopping in Zion Market. Their seating area is quite dainty and very clean! Lots of parking in this plaza and the staff/service has been great! Just tried their new item #12 Furai Chicken Cro-Sand. The buttery flakey bread with the crispy juicy chicken is such a great combo. You can also ask for different types of sauces that takes the sandwich to a whole new level of flavors! Best korean fried chicken in Irvine hands down! Located in the food plaza in Zion market, they offer delicious fried chicken in togo orders. Definitely way better than any korean fried chicken in the area and why bother driving to BP for kfc when there's already Furai? I usually get the sweet and sour and the kang jang. The kang jang packs a considerable amount of spice but it also comes with seeds for a nice nutty flavor. The soy garlic is also a common favorite of many locals. They've recently upped the prices as well as included potato and dok into each order. tip: the wait is usually around 30-45 minutes for fried chicken. Unfortunately, they do not have their own stand-alone store, which I think would be great considering they would expand quickly. The food spots at this Zion location are almost unmatched, and I think Furai Chicken is true top-tier. We picked up lunch on a Sunday afternoon, and they were pretty busy. Our food took about 25 minutes to come out, but it smelled divine. I could smell it all the way home and my mouth was watering the whole time. The worker here was incredibly friendly and on top of it. I didn't catch his name, but he was a Hispanic guy wearing a blue apron, and he was packaging the orders so efficiently and with such finesse. Like it was evident he was working so hard and he was so so nice too. Respect. As for the chicken, it was very crispy and juicy. We ordered the Original and the Garlic Green Onion, so the order came with their fried chicken and sides of green onion and different sauces. We also added one sweet & spicy sauce to our order. When we got home, we set up a little buffet of sauces and ate the chicken however we wanted and with whichever sauce(s) our hearts desired. I actually really liked that they provided the sauces on the side, so the chicken stayed nice and crispy. Great spot to pick up a quick lunch as you're getting your grocery shopping done. We tried their waffles and it was pretty good. Make sure and eat the waffles as soon as they come out. Because they do get cold pretty quickly. I was tempted to pay for one of their brownies but when the lady told me, it was $6, I skipped it lol. It's like a 2.5x2 size brownie. I just CANNOT justify paying $15 for 5 pieces of chicken that were more fried batter than actual meat (one piece was actually just fried batter on top of bone with no meat). The fried batter was also overwhelming at times and left an overly greasy aftertaste. The sweet and spicy dipping sauce was just OK and nothing special. The gigantic 2 potato wedges that are included in every order is just a gimmick. Looks like you're getting a good portion size but potatoes are a relatively cheap ingredient. I'm not even going to reference the inflation hike in restaurants across the county currently but the stinginess here is just OUTRAGEOUS. Hands down my favorite korean fried chicken in Irvine. Ive been coming here since they opened in Zion Market but I'm really happy that they opened their own spot in the new location. I love their original but the kang jung is also delicious. The chicken is freshly made, super juicy, and crispy. It's perfect with their pickled radish and jalapeños. Make sure to also try their heath bar cornflake cookies. It's surprisingly delicious. Service here is also very friendly. Everything was packaged nicely and when we changed our minds to eat there at the last minute they came over to our table and offered plates and utensils. They are my favorite fried chicken -- because of the flavor of their soy garlic marinade. We usually only order the whole chicken. The wings only is a great option if you're into that! Their chicken is crispy even if it's tossed in sauce and sits for a couple hours. They moved a little while back from Zion to their current spot and when they did, they expanded their menu a bit. You pay close to 15 bucks for like 5-6 pieces of chicken. I ended up getting two half orders, one original and one soy garlic chicken. The soy garlic chicken was alright, and if you get an original chicken, you'll also end up getting one sauce. i chose the garlic jam and also paid an extra 50 cents for the sweet and sour. The chicken has a nice crunch to it and its not greasy like KFC or popeyes. 2 half orders were enough to feel two people... I've read other reviews where they mention one half order is enough to feed 2 people... unless they came out of a buffet, i don't know how that could be true. lol The chicken also comes with some wedge cut fries, jalapeños and white radish. After seeing pretty great reviews, I decided to try a new Korean fried chicken spot as opposed to my go to. Unfortunately, the taste in my opinion did not live up to my expectations. I ordered the 20 piece chicken wings and chose the soy garlic and sweet and spicy as my two flavors. Both were underwhelming but the sweet and spicy was straight up not my thing. Let's talk about the good before discussing why I didn't particularly enjoy their chicken. The chicken was definitely crispy and tasted freshly fried. The chicken was not dry by any means. The flavor is what disappointed me. The chicken itself does not taste marinated or brined so when I ate the wings without any sauce it was flavorless chicken. The places that do it right are able to make their chicken flavorful all the way down to the bone. Since the chicken itself is unseasoned, they clearly rely on their sauce for flavor. Both sauces tasted off. Kind of like when you get the knock off version of your favorite chips. The attempt to recreate it is there but you can definitely tell that it's not on par. I know that different restaurants will have their own version but I wasn't a fan of theirs. Their sauce game was weak and at first glance I could not tell which one was sauced up. I had to look closely to see that one had minced garlic. I don't even know what to say about the sweet and spicy. I chose it after reading so many reviews praising it but I can't see why. First off, it was not spicy at all. It's a dark red sauce but it's just straight up sweet. There was also some odd spice they put in the sauce that tasted like cinnamon. One of the typical fall spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove... something like that. It really tasted like I was dipping a bland fried chicken wing into puréed apple pie filling. It was really off putting and I could not enjoy it. Clearly, I was not a fan of the flavors they used here. I personally wouldn't come back but maybe you'll enjoy it! Best Korean Fried Chicken! I ordered half order of the Kang Jung and it was marvelous! It had some potatoes, rice cake, and pumpkin seed mix into the chicken. The Kang Jung sauce is the perfect combo of a sticky sweetness and red chili spice. The order comes with pickled jalapeños, pickled radish and Korean pickled daikon radish. We have been hugeee furai fans for the last year and now just able to write about it! Living in Irvine area, I have tried almost all Korean bbq chicken spots and this continues to be my personal favorite. The best crunch, the most unique flavors, the most rich flavors amongst the popular competitors in the area! Their new spot as of recent is called furai chicken and waffles, as they moved out of the Zion Market into their own spot a block away. There is small amount of inside dining and apparently they will come out soon with an extended menu with brunch items as well. Regarding their wings, we usually order 2-3 different flavor orders of 1/2 whole chicken to feed 2-3 people, which is plenty. My favorite flavors are: kang Jung wings (sweet and spicy flavored wings with a mixture of seeds, fries and pieces rice cakes) and soy garlic (not spicy at all, more sweet). Each order of wings comes with small side of pickled radish and pickled jalapeños. We also ordered beer battered fries (new to their location) and we were offered their new sauce parmasean garlic sauce and it was so good to pair with the fries! I have no doubt their new menu extended menu coming soon will be delicious! Each time we go, food is always consistent, service is fast and ordering easy (order online is best!!
