When I was checking GTA's new gourmet feeds, I encountered Fung's Kitchen and you never know how excited I was to know it is ran by my beloved Ala Kitchen (in Markham, recently closed) staff. But I was careful to decide when to to visit. As I wanted to make sure that there is my favourite "Ala Kitchen Crab XLB' back in the menu. Very recently, finally, I saw it in IG which confirmed it's there. Yey yey yey!!!! We were here on Saturday lunch hrs (1pm?) but there were people sitting on the chairs around entrance waiting for a table. Good sign! The space is smaller than their ex location in Markham. But I was so glad to see the familiar faces serving here. Updated menu was available by QR code. (paper one did not have new additions). We had - Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao - Hot and sour soup - Dry fried shredded beef I noticed the Crab XLB's name is now Crab "roe" xlb. But it tasted as great as before. Strong, thin wrapper with good amount of soup inside, and the integration of whole was as great as before. Tender stuffing, melted with soup inside mouth, releasing generous crab flavour. Hot and sour soup was, as other reviewers say, very moderate in spice/hotness. Yet I like it as it had more variety of ingredients (incl. fish maw pieces) than other places. I like this personally. My hubby put a bit of chilli paste (available at the table). Dry fried shredded beef. It's like tener-soft beef jerky fried with Chinese flavored crisp coating- Good! I liked crispy rice cracker that accompanies with it as well. I wished we could try other dishes but our table was too small to do so, may be next time - I will make sure I get a bigger table! Will come back for Crab XLB and to try new items!!!! So glad that Ala is back!!!!

Would not return. Seating environment is disappointing. It's tight, uncomfortable, and their rectangular tables are not practical if you're not in a big group sitting at the round tables. Also not a fan of them rushing you out the door after your meal. Menu is quite limited and portion sizes are laughably small. The xlb's here are the better ones in the city for sure though but the seating and remainder of menu do not make you want to return.

Fung's Kitchen was formerly A La Kitchen which has closed completely but now they reopened at a new location. This is an authentic Shanghai restaurant and it's rare to find Shanghai restaurant in Toronto these days. Ordered 8 items from their menu to try. Soup dumplings and pan-fried du.olings was delicious and the skin wrap was thin and soft. Meat filling was juicy and has a hint of ginger flavour. MUST order! Their signature Shanghai stir-fried noodle was al dente and has tons of cabbage slices. Strong soy sauce wok hey flavour and is their signature item. Glazed smoked fish was perfectly marinated and not overly sweet. Fish meat was firm and I enjoyed it surprisingly. Cured pork bamboo shoots casserole soup was tasty. Perfect for a cold winter day to share and the umami of the soup comes from the cured pork meats. This is an authentic Shanghainese dish. Pork hock in garlic sauce was nicely prepared with a good amount of semi sweet garlic sauce. Both desserts was amazingly executed. Egg white souffle was skillfully deep fried and sprinkled with sugar on the top. You can easily remove the sugar if you find it too much. Osmanthus wine soup with sesame balls is my personal favourite! The sesame rice balls taste amazing and not like the ones you get from the groceries/supermarket. Likely they hand make it with pork oil with the black sesame filling which is absolutely yummy. I'm very satisfied with this meal and will be back to try their combo sets in the future. Small dining space so be sure to come early before seats fill up.

We were so incredibly sad that Ala Kitchen in Markham closed last June. We made it a point to visit before their closure. We had been going since their opening and our kids grew up with them. They have the BEST soup dumplings in town and we were suffering from withdrawal and making do with the other one that was close by (not the same). Recently, a video-blogger shared a video of Fung's and the Chinese name of the restaurant was the same! When we finally had the chance to drive down and try, the smells greeted us with familiarity! Behind the counter were our favourite servers too! The kids were soooo excited! They said, "It smells the same! Look it's them!" I guess they were sworn to secrecy when we asked whether another was opening up or whether the chef was going to open their own restaurant. Even the tables and chairs were the same! Anyway, you can tell our excitement. We ordered our go to with only a few of us: soup dumplings, Shanghai stir-fried thick noodles, scallion pancakes, pan-fried pork dumplings, and dan dan noodles. Everything was just as expected and satisfied our half-year drought. The only thing missing was the Shanghai-style stir-fried rice cakes. They have a more limited menu now and while they do have the rice cakes, they don't have the one that the kids prefer. Our only wish is that they stayed in Markham.

Traditional Shanghai dishes with non-traditional taste Atmosphere: This restaurant is quite small compared to the previous iteration, and is located a bit further away in Scarborough but was very busy and nicely renovated with high ceilings but not a lot of dining space. Tables were quite small and packed closely together, which took away from the atmosphere. Food: When we first arrived, we noticed portions were very small even when compared to those typically served in Shanghainese restaurants, especially at the given price point of the menu. The yan du xian soup was very light and had a nice broth, but the pork was too fatty and the bamboo tasted canned. The combination platter was nice with the restaurant allowing us to select a couple of the dishes we wanted to try (the lamb jelly and crystal pork, both very well done) but the vegetarian dish was a bit of a miss as it was too light and was not very filled. The braised pork was on the tougher side and not cooked to be tender. The crystal shrimp tasted good, and was bouncy and fresh. The kung pal chicken was spicy and is not typical of Shanghai cuisine, which was an odd choice on the menu (Especially when paired in the combo). The noodles did not have any chew or wok hei to it. The soup dumplings were well made and had a very delicate skin, but the flavour needs to be more savoury and sweet, whereas this one tasted only of pork and was quite bland. The glutinous rice was very good, and tied the meal together. Service: The staff were very friendly but thought that the cake we had prepared for after the meal was for a different table (luckily, they didn't serve it) so they definitely need to be more attentive, especially as the restaurant is quite small and there weren't many tables to begin with. They were generally out of the way unless requested or serving dishes to our table. Might drop by if craving specific specialty dishes from Shanghai, but only if in the area as the cooking is not up to par.

There are not many authentic Shanghainese restaurants in Toronto, with some good reviews, we decided to try it out. The restaurant is not big and tables are all packed together. They only allow 5 or more guests to reserve table, however the server was very nice to reserve a table for the 3 of us when I called in. Overall service was good, foods were mediocre as they were on the salty side, it's considered pricey as portion sizes were small, there are so many other better choices with similar price points.

It feels immersive and intentional, almost like stepping into a countryside home in Dongbei rather than a typical restaurant. The décor isn't fancy, but it's rich in cultural detail and warmth, perfectly matching the hearty, comforting style of Northeast Chinese cuisine. The space is unique and perfect for taking photos. The food here is very generous. We ordered the 4-person set with two side pots. Tomato Braised Beef Brisket and Chicken Stewed with Mushrooms and the portions were huge. Both pots arrived steaming hot and filled to the brim, clearly meant for sharing. The braised beef was rich and hearty, while the chicken pot was comforting and full of flavor, making it perfect for group dining or cold weather meals. Combined with the rustic, traditional décor, it really feels like authentic Northeast Chinese comfort food. The food and atmosphere were excellent, though the service was a bit lacking. Prices are reasonable for the generous portion sizes and the unique restaurant décor.

EVERYTHING was great. I love the wrapper of each dumplings, each has own "wheat-y flavor" itself. Each dumpling wrapper hits a perfect thickness/thinness. And they were flawlessly/carefully cooked - boiled/steamed to achieve soft and chewy texture, pan fried to execute crispy, soft and chewy texture. The each filling hits perfect seasoning balance - and juicy! Delicious! B12 Crab XLB & P1 Pot stickers are the must-order items. If you don't know which dumpling to try, then I highly recommend D7 (Celery and Pork, boiled). Juicy with this refreshing crunchy celery texture and gentle grassy aroma. Full of juice! Careful :) N3 noodle was also tasty and generous. The noodle texture was chewy and had a nice bite. A LOT of meat pieces. Last but not the least - C11, black fungus was soooo refreshing. Every bite was enjoyable. Very mildly seasoned with vinegar based dressing and garlic, mixed with freshly chopped coriander. Simple and delicate, showing their culinary confidence. I will come back, I cannot wait to try other dumplings!
