Fukada is easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in Orange County. Its dishes are often simple and feel healthy. My favorite thing to get her is their noodle combo, which lets you choose from soba or udon, hot or cold, and then, tanuki or sansai. On top of that, you can choose a side dish to go with it like a spicy tuna don, curry don, etc. I usually go for a hot sansai udon, or a noodle soup with udon topped with root and mountain vegetables. What I love about this is how silly their udon is and how flavorful the broth is, bursting with umami flavor. I almost always get it with the spicy tuna don on the side. It's made up of soft white rice (you can ask for brown rice) topped with finely chopped tuna mixed with a sweet and spicy mayo and topped with shredded nori. It's the best spicy tuna don around! If you're looking for a lighter meal, they have a lot of options from salads to appetizers, donburis, and noodle dishes. My family particularly likes the fried squid legs. read more

One of my favorite place to take visiting guests due to freshness and quality of product, place, and customer service. They make their noodles fresh at facility. The udon is must haves --they chewy and soft at same time-- perfect texture, and their rice dishes accompaniment is wonderful too. Their portions are very decent. It's good to go as family, groups, or individuals as they have very flexible seating. Sometimes they will seat people together with other groups of people you don't know but I don't mind that. i probably come here way too often but honestly whatever - they've got some of the best no frills japanese food in the OC! i love calling in to pick up a quick lunchtime to go order when im feeling too lazy to cook and the service is always top notch. the workers are all so friendly and knowledgeable about their menu! my favorites that i go back to time and time again are the spicy tuna roll (seriously cannot get enough of this!), spicy tuna don, and the udon with tempura topping. they also have delicious tempuras that you can order by 2 piece! i love the shrimp and scallop. highly highlyyyy recommend coming here! but try to beat the lunchtime rush as the line can get pretty long outside. plenty of parking and there is seating inside as well :) always happy to support this business! read more

The katsu don rice bowl has pork covered in eggs with some delicious rice underneath and the udon soup has spinach inside as tempura flakes, if you add that. Japanese "slight" Fusion cuisine. If you want a large variety of Japanese food, do not come here, HOWEVER, if you want Udon AND Rice Dish, THIS IS THE PLACE. The Combo is the best selection because you can get either hot or cold Udon AND 9 different covered Rice dishes. The portions are good enough to fill you up (not just whet the appetite), at least I was full by the end of the night. The Calamari/Squid is the best value where they plate is completely covered, enough for 3-4 ppl. The Chicken Wings take about 20 extra minutes and come in a dipping sweet soy sauce (just like Chinese Soy Sauce Chicken), very delicious, though a bit smaller than I anticipated. Try once and you be the judge. You can get either brown or white rice. The Udon noodles are slightly smaller in diameter than traditional Udon noodles, taste great, and easier to handle with the sticks. A winner IMO. Hours are Tuesday-Sunday, Closed Monday and they open until 9PM. Highly recommend going early because you will wait at least 50 minutes on the weekends. No reservations. Yes Take Out. I came in with very very large expectations but was met with ok food and service. I came here at 1:00 PM and knew that the wait would be long. At 1:30 I asked the guy if he called my name yet and he said no and that he will call the names inside then outside. Well, that was not what happened. They called my name outside and someone said that they were me and took my seat. This couple sitting next to me came in 20 minutes after me and were seated so I walked up to the name list and realized they had "called my name" seven groups ago. The guy calling out names was so soft spoken and didn't bother to call out people inside first before going outside. I had to wait another 15 minutes for a table so a GRAND total of 65 minutes for a table here. Make sure you are on top of your game and continuously asking (I was, but they completely did not care). I decided to get the lunch special and it was just ok. I got the woodland vegetables with the spicy tuna don. I noticed that the udon and rice bowls come out super fast (within 10 minutes) because they have most of it pre-made. The spicy tuna don had way to much mayonnaise in it and the rice was shockingly sweet. The udon itself is sub-par. There's nothing special about it, just some broth that tasted a little too fishy, a little bit of noodles and some unseasoned veggies. I had really high expectations coming in from all of the reviews but maybe I just had bad service and the chef was having a not so great day, but I don't think it's worth the wait for me to come back. read more

This place is freaking good and surprisingly affordable, given the amount of food you get at its price. The food is high quality, and you know that the staff take care in preparing your food. I really liked their cold noodles (I think its part of a deal where its a small bowl of soba and a small bowl of oyakodon for $13), and it was so filling that I couldn't finish it. This is pretty close to me, so I'm always here pretty often. Their udon combo is a great deal and comes with a ton of food that I can never finish in one sitting. I usually recommend this place because of how quickly they fulfill orders and if you call in beforehand, they'll pretty much have it ready by the time you get to the restaurant. Most of their dishes are pretty healthy and clean tasting, not too heavy which is nice. But still super flavorful and very filling. All their seafood dishes are also pretty good, their spicy tuna don is tasty and something about the rice in their dons has me just eating it plain by itself. Udon broth looks plain but wow I don't know how it got me picking up the bowl to make sure I get every last drop. Udon noodles are also a great consistency and enjoyable to eat. Overall, a solid place all around. Wished they did have indoor dining, but they have plenty of tables outside if you do wish to dine there. read more

After we were seated I heard customers having to wait 30m to get seated at a table. Food is always delicious here even though the wait can be long. They are also kid friendly, they have special plates just for kids which is always nice! Service is great. Staff is super friendly. A bit loud inside but not too bad. Parking was definitely easy. Came here during a weekday night. Only takeout, however was able to get the food and eat at the outside patio area. Ordered: Combination: Hot Udon with Sansei (mountain spring veggies) Unagi don Agedashi tofu And Salmon Skin Salad Food took a bit to come out. They packaged everything really well. The salmon skin salad was a bit disappointing. Salmon Skin was crispy, but some were burnt and not tasty. Also, it was a bit fishy for my liking. But the portion was huge and good greens. The salad dressing was a bit on the light side. Unagi don was good, but I've had better. It was a little under seasoned and wish it was more crisp on the outside and flaky in the inside. The agedashi tofu was okay. Did not like the batter on the outside. It was bit chewy like mochi-like texture, and the dipping sauce was on the light-bland side with all the little condiments were nice. The hot udon with the sansei veggies was the star of the night. The broth was flavorful and homey. The udon wasn't too thin or thick and had a nice chew and bite. The veggies really complimented the dish. Overall, food was good but not amazing. Hands down my favorite Japanese restaurant in all of Los Angeles, and no I'm not being dramatic when I say that. When most people think Japanese food, their brain automatically goes to ramen or sushi. But let me tell you, the next time you crave something Japanese cuisine, give Fukada a try! It's across the street from the Irvine Spectrum Center and serves the most delicious soba and udon I have come across outside of Japan. I ordered the cold Sansai dipping noodle with tuna don set and my coworker ordered the hot Tanuki udon with vegetable curry. We also split a side of tempura. Each item was absolutely delicious. Flavors were balanced and you could taste each component. Japanese cooking is extremely clean and simple and Fukada does this without any lack of flavor. If you don't know what to get, I recommend the cold Sansai dipping noodle. It was comprised of a cold soba topped with veggies and mushrooms that comes with a mirin based dipping sauce. I dressed mine with green scallions and wasabi paste. Great food for a great price and HUGE portions. I can't recommend this place enough! read more

Fukada is solid if not spectacular. We came on a Saturday night and the wait was maybe 15 minutes. For the 3 of us, we ordered 2 combinations and several appetizers. We found the portions to be ample and we ended up with doggie bags. In sum, we found the udon and soba noodles to be top notch, perfectly al dente. The rice bowls are aromatic and flavorful. But honestly a bowl of noodle and a bowl of rice is a lot of carb to put down. For the other dishes, I was disappointed with the giant tempura. For $15, they were not so giant like. The pork belly was tender and was perfect accompaniment to the rice bowls. Fried chicken was our son's fav - not entirely surprising. We also tried the miso eggplant. It takes 20 minutes so order those early. Overall Fukada provides fine authentic Japanese cuisine, even if it doesn't blow your socks off. read more

I could not be more disappointed :( I've waited sooo long to try this place, and all my friends rave about it! I tried coming on a Sunday before, but they were unexpectedly closed =/ Came again, and was so happy. I ordered to-go, and got the lunch special seafood salad combo for $12.95. This came with a seafood salad with your choice of a bowl. I was in between the Tentoji Don and the Spicy Tuna, but opted for the latter as I've heard the Tentoji (shrimp tempura and egg over rice) could be a little salty. I'm not sure if my expectations were just too high because I had heard so much hype, but the spicy tuna bowl was lacking soo much. It tasted much too creamy for my liking :( I did, however, really like the fact that Fukada offers a brown or white rice option! The salad was my least favorite part of the meal. I honestly couldn't get myself to finish the last 1/2+ of it because it was DROWNED in dressing. Coming from me- thats really saying a lot. My friends laugh at me when I eat salads because I use so much dressing that you'd think I'm scared of eating any piece of vegetable on its own LOL The salad here, however, was just unbearably drenched :( That's not to say I didn't like the dressing! I actually really enjoyed it, but would definitely recommend asking for the dressing on the side. I think I'd be down to give Fukada another try simply based on how much my friends vouch for this place (I might have just come on an off day). Fukada is very popular, and for good reason. They do simple, quality Japanese dishes very well. I came on a Saturday at ~1:45 (so almost closing time for Lunch), and it was packed! I ended up having to wait around half an hour before I was finally seated. Nonetheless, the service was very quick. I shared 2 appetizers with my table: AGEDASHI TOFU, my go-to appetizer at any Japanese place -- it was very good! The sauce was delicious, and the tofu was the perfect texture. We also got the SALMON HARAMI (grilled salmon belly) and this was GOOOOOD. The salmon was so yummy and just melted in your mouth. It's a little on the expensive side, but it is very much worth it. I definitely will be ordering this again if I come back. My main dish was the NOODLE COMBO: COLD SANSAI (mountain vegetable) UDON + KATSU DON for just $11.95! It is such a steal for the amount of food you get. I couldn't even finish it all and had to bring some home for leftovers. The udon was a very nice texture and very chewy (personally wish the noodles were a little thicker). The dipping sauce was very rich as well. The vegetables were good, nothing too spectacular in my opinion. The katsu don wasn't my favorite though. I thought it made my rice a little soggy, and the flavor just wasn't my taste. I have been going here for almost 10 years and I can't believe I haven't left them a review to support them. (Secretly it might have been because I don't want even more people finding out about this hidden gem) I first found out about Fukada when I was doing my undergraduate program at UCI and I remember getting the seafood salad during lunch time and saving the rice bowl for dinner. The quality of the food has always remains consistent and their food has remained fairly priced. Their udon and soba noodles are always fresh as they're made in house. The dressing on the seafood salad is one of my favorite salad dressings and I am so happy they now sell it by the bottle (seriously this stuff is to die for). I don't normally post, but this made me very angry. Found a rock in my udon and almost ate the rock. I wouldn't be so angry if I felt their apology was genuine, but I felt they kept making excuses of how it could have gotten in the food (i.e. the farm they get their veggies from). I would have appreciated if the manager or shift leader said something. I don't think they understood the gravity of finding this size of a rock in the food and a customer almost ingesting it or breaking a tooth on it. Thank you for giving my money back. The salmon was soft and perfectly fatty, and had the nice grilled charcoal musk. - HOT TANUKI UDON & TENTOJI DON: I ordered this as a lunch special, so it's a really great deal. Two pretty big servings for $11.95! AMAZING! I think I'd recommend getting the udon cold. Though I love hot soupy udon, the udon noodles lost their chewiness really quickly and the tempura toppings got super soggy after bathing in the broth. The tentoji don was probably my least favorite dish of the day. I ordered it with brown rice, and it just seemed too moist and the egg was very bland to me. [SERVICE/AMBIENCE] You have to largely consider that there will probably be a long wait. I came at a Sunday at 1:30 and was seated for a party of three 30 min later. The servers are good, you just might have to wave them down since they are busy with so many customers. I've been here a few times before to get the soba and unagi dons, and they've been super filling and delicious! I decided to try the seafood salad combo with the unagi don today during lunch. Take note that you're most likely going to have to order in person and wait instead of ordering over the phone in advance. I tried ordering over the phone in advance, but they did not pick up for any of the few calls I made within the hour. That's a bummer, but it took about 10 minutes for the food to come out, so it wasn't too bad. The seafood salad was super fresh, almost like half-cooked poke. It has been 4 years since I've had my first taste of Fukada and my feelings haven't changed. It's surprising how consistent the food quality is here. You can't go wrong with their udon/rice combos. I haven't had it in a while because I work when it's open and not when it's closed, but I was able to have it today. The wait was about 30 minutes at 1 on a Saturday. I ordered a spicy tuna don with the tanuki udon. The food comes out pretty fast! I loooooove the spicy tuna don. I don't know what they do but the spicy tuna just melts in your mouth and compliments the rice and soy sauce so well. The rice they have is also soft and fluffy which I love! The udon is decent, nothing too special to be honest, but still delicious because I love udon! I'm surprised how much you get because of the price for the special. Why is this place so good? We tried almost one of everything on the donburi bowls with our large party. Nothing really disappointed--so def try any of the bowls. The only downside is that seating is limited and not ideal for a big group.. so we sat outside and moved tables together. Would definitely be back for the hot udon and donburi bowls. read more
