Pretty amazing that Fugetsu-Do has withstood the test of time, surviving through WWII, multiple recessions and riots, and even the pandemic. The oldest confectionery shop makes a variety of mochi and manju daily for about $2 a piece. Unfortunately, they don't make the best gifts as they must be eaten within a couple of days. They also carry some rare candy that can't even be found in Japan anymore. During my last visit, I got a few with strawberry, blueberry and chocolate flavored red bean filling as well as LA Dodgers imprinted pancakes. Chewy goodness! They can get pretty busy during the weekends, but weekdays are a quick in and out process. The staff are patient and helpful in explaining the treats. There's no seating. It's just a grab n go shop.
I always have to grab some mochi when I'm in Little Tokyo. 6 pcs was $14.50. My favorites were strawberry, dorayaki, and blueberry. The mango didn't taste like mango to me and was too sweet. $15 minimum required for credit card payment. Service was friendly and helpful. The shop is old and charming with buckets out to catch rainwater from the leaky ceiling.
Got way too many mochi, but my favorite has to be the chofu! It's a little basic, but in the best way possible. The pancake-like exterior paired with the fresh, chewy mochi on the inside is such a perfect combination. I also tried some of their other popular flavors and definitely like switching things up with the green tea and blueberry ones. I'm not the biggest fan of red bean, so I tend to keep it pretty simple, especially since I enjoy pairing my mochi with a sweeter tea that I make at home!
Fugetsu-do is my favorite place to visit in all of Little Tokyo. It remains family owned and it has been serving mochi in this same spot since 1905. I believe their outstanding mochi shop is the keystone to all of little tokyo and it's a must visit when you are in the area. They have fruity mochi and you can sometimes get it filled with red bean. Recently, they've had a Shohei Ohtani special, where it's a blue mochi filled with white chocolate ganache. My favorite is their chocolate mochi as it's simple, chewy, sweet, and delicious. In my visit this weekend, we got this blueberry mochi that was filled with the same white chocolate ganache that was in the shohei special. If you look around their storefront, you might find some hidden gems on the shelves. I got a salted caramel kit kat bag that was not cheap; however, it's also pretty hard to find. Overall, this is a gem and a pillar in the community!
Incredible mochi! Thankfully the small line we waited in moved fairly quickly. We grabbed a 6 piece box and had the gentleman helping us pick his favorites. They didn't disappoint. The black sesame and red bean were our favorites!
This place has been around since 1903! So amazing. The oldest Japanese-American business in the country. I love stopping in when I'm in town and it's a great place to take out of towners if they like mochi and sweet treats. I got a pack of 8 today and it came in around $17. It's fun to try different flavors! The guy behind the counter was unfortunately not the friendliest, he seemed a little impatient by us asking what the flavor of each mochi was. Not our fault for wanting to know and descriptions of each not being displayed! Anyways, the mochi is soooo soft and fresh. You have to make sure to eat them relatively soon after buying them because after several days, they start to go bad. I personally like the ones with red bean in them.
What an amazing shop! Was on vacation in LA for a concert and had some extra time for sightseeing and scoping out awesome food stops, so we knew Fugetsu-Do had to be on the list. The shop has been open for 103 years and is certainly impressive! We got there about 10 minutes before open and were the first ones in line. The mochi was fresh, they had a huge selection, and at a good price. They also have tons of other snacks and the staff was so nice and friendly. By the time we left, there was already about a dozen people in line behind us, so definitely recommend to get there early. Ultimately, I went with a six piece with two red bean mochi, two blueberry mochi, and two strawberry mochi. All of them were very delicious, the mochi was perfectly chewy, and a good amount of filling. We will definitely be back if we're in the area!
Fugetsu-Do is a true Little Tokyo institution and an absolute must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic Japanese wagashi. The historic shop has a charming old-fashioned feel, and the service was friendly, welcoming, and efficient. Every mochi tasted incredibly fresh, with a soft, pillowy texture that showcased the craftsmanship behind each handmade piece. **Sho-Mochi: 5/5** One of Fugetsu-Do's signature creations, the Sho-Mochi was a true standout. The vibrant blue mochi was incredibly soft and chewy, while the silky white chocolate ganache filling delivered a rich, creamy sweetness that melted effortlessly on the palate. **Strawberry Anko Mochi: 4/5** The strawberry anko mochi featured a soft, pillowy wrapper filled with a blend of strawberry and smooth white bean paste, then topped with a hazelnut chocolate ganache that added a rich, nutty sweetness. Unfortunately, the strawberry filling tasted somewhat artificial, lacking the fresh, vibrant fruit flavor I was hoping for. **Green Tea Mochi: 5/5** My love for matcha made this an easy standout. Filled with smooth white bean paste infused with matcha, it offered a pleasant balance of earthy, slightly bittersweet notes and subtle sweetness. **Mango Mochi: 5/5** Bursting with natural mango flavor, this mochi was wonderfully refreshing from the very first taste. Its springy chew created a pleasantly airy, satisfying texture, while the gentle sweetness rounded out the bright, fruity notes. Fugetsu-Do has earned its legendary reputation through generations of exceptional craftsmanship. From the incredibly fresh mochi to the diverse selection of handcrafted flavors, every piece reflects the care and tradition that have made this shop a beloved destination for decades. Whether you're visiting Little Tokyo for the first time or returning for a nostalgic treat, it's a timeless stop that's well worth experiencing.
Have been my go-to for traditional mochi since the first weeks in LA! You could easily tell it's great when the store was still in old-school style, accepting card only with certain minimum purchase, yet the line consistently stayed long. Plenty of flavors offered from red bean, white bean, mugwort, soy bean, matcha, chocolate, and even peanut butter. Some of my fave would be the red and soybean, peanut butter, and kinako ones! Price was pretty affordable and nowadays they're even accessible in several Asian grocery stores!
Came by after stopping by the SEGA pop-up across the street and picked up some yummy mochi. There was a line out the door but it went pretty quickly. I purchased peanut butter mochi, rainbow dango and one piece filled with red bean paste with a strawberry on top (strawberry anko). Perfect sweet treat after lunch.
On Friday before I caught my ride back to SD, I stopped by this quaint, no frills little shop to buy some fresh mochi & other treats. While the owners have long considered remodeling, the store is kept as is to preserve its history and to be a concrete connection to the past. At around 3:30pm, the line was long but it moved quickly. I purchased a six pack with strawberry, LA & walnut/red bean confections, PB/strawberry mochi, fruit mochi & a packet of apple tea. The young employee who assisted me was friendly and helpful. We loved the strawberry & LA mochi treats the best out of the fresh ones. The walnut red bean was okay, but it was a bit dry. The peanut butter mochi were surprisingly good as well! Overall, this shop is a great place to come for freshly made mochi & manju treats as well as a host of other packaged snacks and delicacies. Support Little Tokyo's continued success and growth by stopping by this very special store that has been in the same family since 1903! Store Hours: 8am-6pm daily Arigato!
Maybe I'm just not a fan of traditional mochi but I thought this was just okay. I'm more of a sweets person and the fillings are more on the savory side i.e. red bean so that may be why. I am not familiar with fresh mochi so I tried asking the worker the flavors but she was a bit standoffish so I felt pretty rushed and unsure of what I was ordering. There was also a minimum to use credit card so I got more than I really wanted to be honest. I liked the blueberry and mango the most.
Omg I've been meaning to go to Fugetsu-Do since forever and finally made it out to Little Tokyo. The shop itself is pretty small and has the traditional mom & pop feel to it, and everyone was very friendly. Shoutout to the girl working that Saturday who answered all my questions about the different filled mochi flavors. They have a pretty decent assortment of Japanese snacks and candies, but of course come for the freshly made mochi. The texture is soooo soft and chewy unlikely the weird powdery texture of many other store bought mochi. My favorite was definitely the ichigo daifuku, although I do wish it came with a whole strawberry instead of just a small piece because the bite with strawberry was AMAZING. Second favorite is the peanut butter mochi and... I've already gone back just for those. They also sell plain komochi that you can eat fresh the same day or freeze and use later for cooking. Annnd I got some kinako mochi last weekend cause I keep going back lol.

If you're in little Tokyo, this spot is a MUST!!!! Open since 1903, the shop serves varieties of mochi!!! Perfect little mom and pop shop. Freshly made, extremely traditional and tasty. Rice mochi made the way it is supposed to. Also all mochi vary in price from $2 to $2.50. Extremely reasonable. You can get a box of anywhere from 6 to 30. Great as a gift! We went 3 days in a row!!! Don't be intimidated by the different flavors and traditional Japanese mochi! The staff is so helpful in explaining the different kinds. Most are sweeter than you would expect! The line also moves quickly. read more
Kiku, Pink Mochi, Green Tea Mochi (8.5/10): These are all the mochi's with white bean paste filling. The green tea mochi was my favorite out of all of these. The filling was a white bean paste base with a hint of matcha/green tea flavor. The matcha flavor balances very well with the classic mochi and white bean flavors. Multi-color Suama mochi & Mango Mochi (9.5/10): These are the stretchiest and chewiest mochi's. They're super fun to eat, and a must try if you come to these mochi shop. They're perfectly sweetened and very delicious. White Chocolate Ganache Mochi (9/10): This mochi is perfect for people who are first getting into mochi and do not like the bean paste flavor. The mochi was definitely not too sweet despite having a white chocolate ganache filling. I enjoyed this a lot although it wasn't the most "authentic" flavor. There is not a lot of filling because it would be way too sweet, otherwise. Overall Thoughts: Fugetsu-Do is such a cute little mochi shop in Japantown LA. There are not many authentic mochi shops left, so please support this local business! Their mochi's are so delicious, and there are so many different flavors to choose from. I'm a huge fan of plain mochi's and white bean paste mochi's, so those are the flavors that I tend to lean towards. There was not a long wait during the time that I came, and their service is relatively efficient. Fugetsu-Do definitely exceeded my expectations and satisfied my mochi craving! read more

This is a must visit shop when visiting Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. Located across the street from Tokyo Village, this stand alone family business has been selling their mochi and manju since 1903. Master Manju maker, Brian Kito is the third generation carrying on this exquisite Japanese product line. Their store offers a wonderful selection of handmade mochi and manju. I highly recommend their Strawberry mochi, which is absolutely delicious! read more

Very cute little shop in Little Tokyo. They have premade mochi, my favorite is the pink one with the peanut butter inside of it. They also have some behind the counter that you can choose from, with an array of pieces for certain prices. This time I also tried the stuff behind the counter, and they were really good, with red bean paste inside most of them in flavoring. The mochi is so fresh. It's so squishy you have to be careful cause sometimes it could get stuck in your throat, it's so well made. The freshness is ridiculous, it's so soft almost like a gummy texture. Highly recommend you try. read more
Small little store. Come early to beat the rush. Otherwise, I feel like you might feel rushed trying to look at everything and pick what you want if there's a long line behind. Got an assortment. Our favorites were the strawberry, the red bean, and matcha. The mochi is so soft! We didn't really care for the blueberry one or the jelly ones. You can't really save the mochi and keep the nice texture so make sure to eat it as soon as possible. If you love mochi, definitely try some. read more
This place specializes in mochi and is the oldest Japanese confectionary in Little Tokyo and possibly Los Angeles. It seems like they have pretty good distribution, especially around town. I've seen their products at different. Japanese markets in several areas. The vibe is a tiny mom and pop type shop that feels family run. This place seems to be a place that always has a line, especially on the weekends, so the service was helpful and efficient. So exciting to get the mochi straight from the source, and the mochi is deliciously chewy and there are lots of different flavors and types of fillings. I enjoyed choosing what I wanted. There are also other imported snacks and goods for sale in the shop as well in addition to the mochi. read more
I purchased an assortment to see which ones I'd like to purchase as take-home gifts for a memorial service. I decided on the Chofu (gyuhi wrapped in a light fluffy pancake) & Ohagi (gyuhi wrapped in coarse red bean). They both looked ornate and my guests enjoyed them. read more

If you love mochi you have to come here. I can never order just one or two. I always have to get box so that I can eat them for the days to come. Made fresh throughout the day I believe. The staff told me they are good for 3-4 days. They have prepackaged mochi and the ones you can get a la carte. I prefer the ones with red bean filling so I will get a few to eat for the next couple of days. This time I decided to try their seasonal flavors so I picked up 2 persimmon flavored mochis. read more
This place was such a treat to visit, I was initially shown a reel on social media advertising this place and saw that it's been open since 1903! I recall seeing this shop whenever I was in the Little Tokyo area, and how it always had a line out the door. It was no different when my dad and I decided to check it out haha! The line moved pretty fast, and soon you were standing in front of the counter looking at all the various types of mochi delicacies to choose from. My dad and I ended up grabbing a 5 items, price-wise this place is on the cheaper side and didn't break the bank. The person at the counter was happy to answer any questions we had and was very pleasant overall. read more

Very soft mochi with delicious flavors. Not too sweet and the bean paste is ground well and not grainy like some fillings. Yummy :D read more
Picked up hand made mochi at the store. It's an institution in little Tokyo. The staff answered my questions on the different flavors. The store has some Japanese snack available to purchase. But when I come here I usually get the simple fruit mochi. The decor make you feel like you have traveled back in time to a local store in Japan. read more

Yum!! Some of the best mochi I've ever had. I'm not a big sweets fan, but I often crave their easy-to-eat bite-sized mochi. They're the OG location (Little Tokyo). Usually a line out the door. Worth the wait! One of Little Tokyo's gems! :) read more

I came to Fugestu-Do for the first time time ever and it was really enjoyable. I met Ana at the door and she was bringing down the awning bc it was late and she told me to go greet David and tell him "we've been looking for him" Went In the door and said "HI DAVID" waved, talked to him and made him laugh. We got the Mango, Green Tea, Red Bean, and Strawberry Mochi. They were all extremely good! On top of that the place felt really cozy and homey, I would definitely come back again. Meeting David and Ana was really enjoyable, they are really good people and gave really good customer service! 10/10 they both need a raise ! read more

As a mochi fan, I was so excited to find out about Fugetsudo, a mochi local mochi shop that had been in operation for 122 years now! It's located in Little Tokyo and the store not only had so many different flavors of Japanese style mochi but also classic Japanese snacks like chocolate and chips. I got a mix of mochis ranging from a classic powdered one to green tea and fresh mochi, unpowered and wrapped in leaves. I really liked the fresh one without the powder since this is hard to find where I live. The texture was so chewy and the mochi itself is not too sweet but the red bean definitely adds the sweetness. Make sure to anticipate a line and bring cash if you are not wanting to meet the $15 credit card minimum. The line does move quickly and mochi are about $3 a piece. Definitely will visit again when I'm back in Little Tokyo! read more
How cool to visit the oldest family owned Japanese confectionery! And I can see how they've stayed in business all this time. Their mochis are so cute and so delicious, with lots of unique flavors. My personal favorite that I tried was the white bean blueberry! read more
Small mochi shop located in Little Tokyo that sold Ohtani/Dodger themed mochi!!! Workers were helpful and friendly. Such a wide assortment of Japanese sweet treats and snacks! What we Ordered: -Sho-Mochi: This was a blue mochi with white chocolate filling. It was honesty just okay, it was more so for the vibes. Had an odd artificial minty taste that I'm guessing is what they use to dye it blue. 3/5 -Chocolate: This one was really good! Mochi chewiness and softness were perfect. Chocolate filling was delish as well. 4/5 Overall, it was such a cool experience visiting this place. Lots of cool desserts to look at and delicious, quality Japanese mochi. I enjoyed it BUT I prefer mochi ice cream. I would def come back to try other mochi flavors though when I'm in the area again! read more
This place is a must try if you are ever in little Tokyo in LA. This mochi shop is so good and do fresh! Yes you don't get what you see on TikTok or Instagram of someone smashing it etc. but let me tell you it's fresh and delicious! Try the strawberry one that they will always have fresh ones on the weekend but in the weekday it's a hit or miss. Service is always spectacular and the shop is always so cool and feels like you are walking into history. read more
Always a pleasure coming here to Fugetsu-Do. I'm so happy that they've found recent success--the family story is so impressive especially given the hardships they have had to go through in the 100+ years they have been in business. The store has delicious, traditional mochi, in addition to some new fun flavors like chocolate and peanut butter. They also sell some LA-specific mochi (go Dodgers!). Plenty of options for everyone. Mochi is around $2-$3 a piece. My go-to is the rainbow dango or suama (plain, lightly sweet mochi). Wait times can be long if there's a line but always worth it. Make sure to bring cash for small orders, as card is only accepted if you buy $15+ worth of stuff. read more

As seen on TV, had to go! Their mochi is so soft and buttery. It's a small shop and popular, because it was packed. We bought almost all the flavors in the case and another container separately. It came out to $48. The service was great and the parking is across the street. We will be returning for more when we visit again. read more
Minimum $15 purchase for card transactions. Located right outside of Japanese Village Plaza, across the street. Very small mom& pop shop that has been around for over 120 years. Mochis are aesthetically pleasing, so kawaii. Mochi texture is soft but just the right amount of chew and lightly sweet. Strawberry filling was my least favorite. It does give an artificial strawberry taste and extremely sweet for my liking. Red Bean filling was what I expected it to be. Ordinary red bean paste. Slightly too sweet for my liking as well. White Bean filling was by far my favorite and would repurchase over and over! Wasn't overly sweet. read more

Historical Mochi shop that's been around for almost 120 years. Mochi is a soft white chewy rice dessert. Lightly sweet with red bean paste, chestnut and other flavors like chocolate, matcha and white beans. The store was very busy, I walked in first but a lady immediately cut in front as I took a moment to look around and started ordering several mochis. The lady behind the counter informed me it was $15 minimum to use a debit or credit card. Each tiny piece was almost $3. Not exactly cheap, I think they really need to update their payment system. It'd be helpful if there was some structure to the line, people were all over the place, no telling who was next. The mochi itself was tasty, it had chestnut, strawberry, white beans paste. It was gone in 3 bites. Besides the improvements I mentioned that need to be done it was an interesting one time experience. read more

I was lucky enough to come across Fugetsu-Do being sold at a festival- I didn't have to drive into Little Tokyo for it! I tried the strawberry and dodgers flavors. The dodgers white chocolate was fun in color, but honestly didn't taste like much. Just mochi! The texture was still very good. The strawberry mochi was more my style, with a thick but not overwhelming layer of strawberry paste in the center. The top was even decorated with a cute flower! If you are lucky enough to come across these at a festival, you'll need to pay cash. read more

Not a huge fan of mochi but this shop was cute. Cash only! We first tried the strawberry daifuku. It was not too sweet and had a red bean paste inside. Had a cute strawberry topping! Second was kusa daifuku, which tasted more floury and mugwort flavor inside was more subtle than expected. read more

Whenever I visited Little Tokyo growing up, my family would always end the day by picking up manju at Fugetsu-do. It truly is a Little Tokyo staple, having been around for over 100 years -- and still consistently drawing lines out the door. You can't go wrong with any of their large assortment of mochi and manju, but my favorite is the kiku (pink mochi with white bean filling). Fugetsu-do is a must-visit every time I'm in Little Tokyo! read more

Line out the door on a Saturday afternoon. The extra crowd might be due to the fact that the Dodgers' World Series Game 2 is this afternoon and a lot of people decided to make a day out of it before going to the game. Lucky bastards. Those of us who don't have tickets will just have to make do with the vibe and no game. Though the line goes out the door, Fugetsu-Do has some extra staff on hand and the line went by very quickly. Some Dodger themed desserts were available. The black sesame mochi is soooo good. The Strawberry one is also very very good. Everything is good, but those are y faves. read more

For Fugetsu-Do Bakery, where is the best place to park? Do they validate?
They only have street parking. However there is a parking structure near Little Tokyo village but they don't validate parking for Fugetsu Do. They only validate for businesses inside the Village.
Does the store happen to sell any Baumkuchen/Tree Cake? or is this just a Mochi place?
It is a traditional manju and mochi place and does not have cakes.
What are the mix and match flavors that run out first? I see strawberry. And chocolate. And what else?
They have mango, red bean, blueberry...
Is there any cream filled mochi? if so, which ones?
I don't believe so. Most of the filled Mochi were with red bean paste or other flavors, but not cream
Is there any specific mochi that is made without artificial flavors and artificial colors? If so, which one(s)? I really want to try their mochi but I'm allergic to artificial ingredients... Only all-natural ingredients will do!
You would try daifuku, white mochi and red bean paste inside. Anything colorful ones have artificial fruit flavor.
Do you still have any sakura mochi?
Sakura mochi is a seasonal offering prepared to coincide with the blossoming sakura 🌸 which is often mid-March to late April. You can check out seasonal offerings on the Fugetsu-do website 😉
How to store the mochi?
some of our products have different shelf lives. but in general, they should be stored at room temp.…
Exactly what days and times are the strawberry daifuku available?
Probably more earlier in the day as it sells out later on.
Hi I have a nut alllergy and have been having your Mochi since I was a small child but I noticed recently you that you now have peanut butter Mochi - is all your Mochi made on same equipment as peanut butter ones even the suama etc? Thx
There is a potential for exposure as the same equipment is used.
Any vegan options?
I went last week and was told that the top row were all vegan. I bought three mochi. Just now I saw a video on YouTube https://youtu.be/2i8jqG6Hx0M that shows two of the mochi I bought having gelatin poured over them. I am fuming!!!
What are the must try's for new & old mochi lovers?
For a nutty and old school mochi, I like the Kinako daifuku. The strawberry daifuku is also a great new meets old mochi. I also like the peanut butter mochi too.
Is it still the price indicated per box if you get assorted/the fruit flavored ones? Does it make it extra?
Yea or you can buy your Mochi piece by piece and the price is on the box!
Does the Mochi typically sell out quickly?
I went at 4:45pm on Hinamatsuri and they still had quite a bit of choices, but I did not see the fresh strawberry mochi or the packs of peanut butter and chocolate mochi.
Can you call in an order and do curbside pickup?
You can call in an order but no curbside pickup!
Still open during stay at home order? What are hours now? Can I still go into shop to browse since I would not know what to order without seeing?
Yes! Monday-Sunday 8a-5p. Can still go into the store but must maintain proper distancing and wear a mask.
Is it vegan and dairy free?
not sure about dairy-free but the mochi are vegan-friendly and gluten-free except for a few exceptions such as the pancake looking ones which are on the bottom rowss.
