Fruit barn! Happy fruit!

Lovely stop for fresh fruit - apples, oranges and pomegranates! They had homemade ice creams with vanilla, chocolate and nuts as well as garlic ice cream cups. Mark found Garlic Parmesan popcorn and Kettle Corn for the kids. There was an array of spices hot sauces and honey available - a sweet treat was an Oregonian sourced Habanero jelly! They take touch pay and cards - love this quick stop!

Fruit Barn, like it's name, is simple, fruity and rustic! It was a welcome stop in a long trip driving south from NorCal. This vendor was open air, right off the side of the road, and offered up nuts, fruit - dry and freshly picked - and preserves. Avocados are 6 maximum per car. I got avocados and pistachios. The attendant was pleasant and efficient. Very cute shop. The wall art on the store's North side added an extra bit of charm :)

On my way back to Las Vegas from San Francisco I decided to stop by this produce stand because fresh is always best. The prices here are fair and the product selections were good. This area is known for Garlic which is my fave. So if you're near here and wanna try something different. They have garlic ice cream for those who are daring enough to try it. Service was ok. The produce stand was fairly clean. Avoid the porta potty. Very disgusting lol.

The town of Gilroy is well-known for its contributions to the agricultural communities. As you drive through wide open spaces, you'll see large fields of crops growing in abundance. Naturally, there's a demand for fresh fruits and vegetables. To satisfy the desire of tourists and locals, several fruit stands are spread out throughout the town. Fruit Barn pretty much sums up what this place is all about. This is a small white building that is reminiscent of a garage. Large red letters are painted atop with the name of the business. If they weren't so large and bold, you'd easily pass this place up. Portable restrooms are on the property for your convenience. Inside you'll find an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables : peaches, strawberries, cherries, corn, and apples. You can purchase 6 ears of corn for $1 with a limit of 18 per family. Dried fruit, trail mixes, nuts, and honey are also available. They also carry avocados which are a very popular product! It's in a prime location because they catch the eye of tourists before they head further down the road. If you continue down Highway 152, you'll see more opportunities to purchase fresh produce from different vendors. The competition is pretty fierce! We almost regretted stopping by Fruit Barn first because we missed our chance to look around elsewhere. Nevertheless, this was still a great find for us! What I like about Fruit Barn is that it's clean and they offer quality fruit and vegetables. People are friendly and very helpful. If you're in the area, it's worth stopping by Fruit Barn to pick up some fresh produce.

Gilroy is such an interesting city, full of agriculture where you can reap the benefits of mother nature's produce (fruit is mother nature's candy). There has been many times that my husband and I have driven pass the numerous of fruit stands on our way to Northern California and back down to Los Angeles where we are from. On our most recent trip driving back home to LA, we decided to stop by Fruit Barn to buy some cherries (I love buying my cherries when they are season) last Sunday afternoon. We parked on the dirt road and walked inside. We ended up getting 2 baskets of cherries (one red and one white), at $7 each (total of $14 for those that can't do basic math). I was able to pay with my credit card (minimum of $10 for all credit card/ debit transactions). The cherries we had later that evening (after finally getting home) were delicious and perfectly sweetened. The amount we had per basket was a large portion but do not know how much I actually got (1 lb? Who knows). Although somewhat pricey, still much better than the cherries back at home in LA where they are not nearly as fresh. Will definitely stop by here again on my way back home to LA in the future.

You will be tempted by the garlic wreaths, but the single bulbs is where it's at. Fruit Barn isn't the largest or fanciest or most charming of the fruit stores or fruit stands in Gilroy along the 152, but it is easy to get to, has loads of garlic, some fruits, some flavored nuts, some jams and olives and the inside of the store is spaced out, which makes it a pleasurable and un-claustrophobic shopping experience. The small garlic wreaths are $12 each or two for $20. You get about 15-16 bulbs on each wreath. If you want it to hang as decoration in your kitchen, then get that. But if you just want garlic to use, Fruit Barn sells individual bulbs in a box towards the back and they are a steal. $.50 each for huge bulbs of garlic, each with big, juicy cloves. I picked my own a huge bag of garlic for only $7. Or you can buy the pre-packed bags, those are a good deal too (but some of those bulbs are smaller in size). They also sell elephant garlic, which are gigantic bulbs. I have no idea how those taste or cook up. They also carry the most common seasonal fruits. The nuts they sell are the pre-packaged nuts from the same distributor that most of the other markets in the area sell. The nuts are about $8 for an 8 ounce bag and aren't that sexy. I would skip those. If you want nuts, go up the road on the 152 (towards San Jose about a half mile up) and look for the Yellow and Red stand on the right. That stand specializes in flavored nuts. Their nuts are $8 a bag and you get about 12 or 14 ounces and each nut is smothered in garlic, cinnamon sugar, honey mustard, jalapeno or whatever other topping you want. I was impressed. Anyhow, back to Fruit Barn. The lady that works there is really nice. Even though the sign said the port-o-lets were only for employees, she let me use one of them. In the five minutes I was there, four separate big rig drivers stopped by to pick up drinks (sodas, energy drinks, fruit juice, water) and snacks. One trucker guy storms in and asks, "What's organic here? I'm looking for organic. Is the garlic organic?" The lady says, "Nothing here is organic." Trucker walks back to his truck and takes off. That was pretty funny. Yes, you can also get get Garlic Ice Cream here. No, they don't make it themselves. Everyone in the area gets their Garlic Ice Cream from the same distributor in Santa Cruz. If you just want garlic, this is as fine a place as any to get it, and cheaper than Casa de Fruta. Good prices, good selection. If you were looking for all kinds of different fruits, well, then you might or might not find the fruit you are looking for here. Or maybe it's because I was there in November and it's not really fruit season.

Here it is!

This place is right off the road-go too fast and you might miss it, although the signage is pretty good!! A great place to stop and get some fruits-or even some garlic vanilla ice cream! The ice cream was good, believe it or not! It really had the garlic taste, but you really could taste the vanilla. They also have chocolate garlic ice cream, which I didn't try.

Fruit Barn caught our attention on the drive back to LA because of the signs advertising their various goods. Also, from the outside Fruit Barn looks impressive and more so than many of the other fruit stands you could stop by on the drive back. Parking was easy as there were a lot of spots out in front. When we went in we saw various fruits and veggies as well as Gilroy's famous novelty in their Garlic ice cream. I have to say the cup is rather small ($3/cup), imagine the cups of ice cream we used to get as kids from the cafeteria. At first that garlic taste is way overpowering and makes you pucker your face from the potency of the garlic. But a few scoops in you get used to it and it really ends up like many wacky ice cream flavors in that you get accents of nasty followed by smoothness of vanilla. There is also a chocolate version too. We also picked up a few cherries which were decently sized. Some were fresh and others really had been out too long. In terms of flavor they were fine though not as plump and firm as I would like my cherries to be. A good level of sweetness and not overly tart either. Nice people here and their stuff will make your drive back more enjoyable. But there are a lot of options on the road and Fruit Barn shows up early so you have to make the decision quickly. It is more spacious and less cramped than other fruit stands but I can't yet say it is above the pack. Tip: $15 min on credit cards.

Boxes of Elephant Garlic... bulbs as big as baseballs!

It was 40 degrees and men were on bikes going inside the truck park areas and looking in vehicles. Inside the truckers parking area, there are homeless encampments with piece of chairs, mattresses, junk and other items thrown everywhere. The lighting was good. The bathrooms were filthy, blood on the walls and feces looked like it exploded inside and out of the toilet. Thankful I brought sandals and my own towel so I could shower the next morning. The showers were not as bad as the bathrooms but there were still used razors in the bathroom. The management needs to consider assisting customers in the order they arrive, but the man behind the counter had no sense of direction. It was strange that he would speak English impeccably at times and then others act like he couldn't even understand the questions I would ask. Be careful as you walk into the gas station, it looks like someone just opened all of the deliveries, stocked the shelves and then threw the trash out the front door. It's an accident waiting to happen, so tread carefully. The place has tons of potential, just need the right person running the place.

When the 101 was fogged in or otherwise the less-preferred route from LA, the 5 to the 152 was a reliable path to the verdant green rolling hills of Gilroy, Pajaro, San Juan Bautista, and Watsonville. I always enjoyed stopping at roadside fruit stands and buying fresh produce, supporting the families who worked the land. Those days are decades ago now, but the roads through these rural areas are still familiar to me. On a recent drive through Pacheco Pass, I stopped off here, drawn in by signage peddling "Avocados- 3 for $1." My truck looked good in the dirt lot with a backdrop of green hills and fallow fields. I picked out a few nice avocados, paid cash, and was on my way. Didn't bite on the assortment of other fruits, veggies, and nuts. Took a pass on the portapotty, too. These roadside fruitstands are an exercise in price-point marketing... just down the road, a saw a sign reading "Avocados- 4 for $1," and smiled to myself. Maybe next time I'll buy there? Doesn't really matter to me, pennies and dimes... but it means a lot to these hardworking folks that you stop in and spend a few bucks here that will go a long way supporting their families. If you shop at farmer's markets in church parking lots and suburban parks, give this place a look, too. You'll be glad you did.

Today When I cut them open, all three were clearly spoiled, discolored, mushy, and nothing like they appeared on the outside. For that price, this was very disappointing. I also felt like the prices advertised didn't quite match what I was actually charged. To add to that, I stopped further down the road and noticed similar items were more affordable and better stored. After already spending so much, I chose not to purchase anything else only to end up with this experience.
