We first heard about Esuki Esquites from a foodie on IG and thought it sounded like such a unique…read moreconcept, plus looked really delicious! It's the first build-your-own Esquites bowl we've ever seen, and the whole Mexican-Japanese fusion concept is such a creative (and delicious) twist. They have a small menu, which kinda makes it easier to decide, but the customization makes your options endless! You start by picking your base (Esquites, rice or 50/50), choose your protein, and then add your favorite toppings. We went with an Esquites bowl topped with jalapeños, jammy egg, and chicken al pastor -- everything was cooked perfectly (egg was jammy, chicken was juicy & flavorful). After trying the base with all esquites, we'll definitely be doing the half-rice/half-Esquites combo next time because we imagine the rice would soak up all the incredible juices and sauces. We also tried the Hirata Pork Belly bao (super meaty pork belly in the fluffiest bun -- very peanut-forward! We loved it, but would probably do a tad lighter on the sauce next time to keep the belly as the star of the show), the Chilangyosas aka gyozas (nutty, earthy, and kind of reminiscent of a chorizo paste -- one of our top bites), and the Strawberries & Cream dessert that completely surprised us in flavor. The strawberries are marinated in sugar and sake, with miso-cinnamon cream, mint, and ginger -- it's layered, refreshing, and unlike anything we've had before! It had way more depth of flavor then we anticipated! To top it off, the Fetch food park itself is super cute, with covered patio seating and a relaxed vibe. It's a husband and wife owned food truck. The wife greeted and served us that day and was incredibly friendly, and everything came out quickly and fresh! Overall its a tasty unique spot to check out for sure!

So far I've only tried one thing so will update later when I've tried more. Also, this truck has…read moreonly been opened for one week so far, so I still consider them in a soft opening phase of the business. I got the traditional esquites, and I added pork belly (+$6.80) and salsa macha (+$1.90). The esquites themselves are pretty good, but it's hard to mess that up. I love that I can get esquites out here in this part of greater Austin now. The pork belly was so incredible tender, I literally exclaimed YUM out loud after my first bite. Seriously impressive pork belly 5/5! The salsa macha was nutty and tasty but I didn't detect any heat. Definitely a good addition to the dish though. My hesitation, and this would be my feedback for the business: the pricing is totally out of whack. The almost-$2 for a spoon of salsa and almost-$7 for 4 small slices of pork belly meant that my bowl of mostly corn cost almost $20. The product is good, and it's a unique concept, but the price is too high. Hopefully they will adjust pricing into the future because I want them to stay around. Trying this first dish has now also made me excited to try there other dishes (e.g. the gyoza and the fresas con crema).

I've been going to this restaurant for at least 40 years (and not one dime has been put into…read moreremodeling ) but had not been in about 15, since I moved away. So $163.53 for 7 people is not the WORST PART! 1. flavorless food 2. waiter never returned to ask how we were doing... we just had to flag him down! 3. and... it's not like he was busy. There were only three or four tables occupied in the entire restaurant right at lunchtime! 4. waiter ASKED HOW MUCH TIP I wanted to add when he picked up my credit card to go run the tab. I said 20%, caught by surprise 5. Waiter added tip on $30 of to-go food... Tamales and chili con carne. Since when do you tip 20% on To go Food?? 6. Tea was $3.75 a glass...whaaaa??? 7. The pralines were $3.25 each 8. The Willie's Plate (yes, WN has been known to eat there 40 years ago) is now up to $16.40... 9. child's plate is $9.45! Yikes 10. AND THE ONE GOOD THING IS THAT THE TAMALES I TOOK TO HOME TO MY HUSBAND WERE GREAT!!! Praise given where praise is due! BOTTOM LINE: yes, Willie Nelson could afford this but otherwise I can see why there were only three tables occupied at 1 o'clock on Sunday! Also, when I called to ask about the $25 tip the guy had given himself, they hung up on me and didn't bother to call back-- if it was a technical problem. I will not go there again!!
